Man with loaded AK-47 arrested outside Iranian journalist’s Brooklyn home

Alinejad was targeted in an alleged kidnapping plot last year by Iranian nationals after speaking out against the Iranian regime. The indictment in that case alleged the plot was organized by an Iranian intelligence official, but Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied any involvement, calling the accusation “baseless and ridiculous,” according to semi-official Iranian state media.

Alinejad said she was home Thursday when federal agents informed her about the armed individual.

“I was told by the FBI to ‘stay away from your home,'” Alinejad told CNN by phone Sunday. “I was shocked. I couldn’t even believe it. I was telling myself, ‘if I opened the door, what was I going to do?'”

NYPD officers arrested Khalid Mehdiyev Thursday afternoon as he drove away from the Brooklyn neighborhood after he failed to stop at a stop sign, according to a federal criminal complaint obtained by CNN. It also said NYPD officers found he was driving without a valid license. Law enforcement officials later found a suitcase in the backseat of his vehicle containing an AK-47-style assault rifle loaded with a round in the chamber, an additional second magazine and $1,100 in $100 bills, according to the complaint.

He is charged with possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number. Mehdiyev is set to be back in court August 12. CNN has reached out to his attorney, Stephanie Marie Carvlin, for comment but has not heard back.

Law enforcement officials say they saw Mehdiyev, a Yonkers resident, in the Brooklyn neighborhood on two occasions last week, Wednesday and Thursday, and also discovered that he’d been issued a parking ticket in the same neighborhood the weekend before, on July 23, according to the complaint.

On Thursday morning Mehdiyev drove a gray Subaru Forester SUV with Illinois license plates and remained in the area for several hours where he “behaved suspiciously,” the complaint states. On one occasion, Mehdiyev got in and out of his car several times, ordered food delivery service to his car, and approached a home in the neighborhood — where Alinejad resides — peering inside the windows and attempting to open the front door, according to the complaint.

Alinejad says she was on a Zoom call with Chairman of the Human Rights Foundation, Garry Kasparov, and Venezuelan politician and opposition leader Leopoldo López when she found out about the armed individual.

“I’m glad my friend @Alinejad Masih is healthy and safe and that the police acted capably against what might have been a deadly situation,” Kasparov tweeted from his verified account Sunday.

The activist shared a security video on her official Twitter account of the man who she says federal agents told her was the same man arrested by police Thursday.

“These are the scary scenes capturing a man who tried to enter my house in New York with a loaded gun to kill me,” she tweeted, although no gun can be seen in the image. “Last year the FBI stopped the Islamic Republic from kidnapping me. My crime is giving voice to voiceless people. The US administration must be tough on terror.”

Alinejad says she has spoken monthly with federal agents since the alleged kidnapping attempt last year.

“I really thought that the plot was over. I thought, ‘OK, I can focus on my job’ — which I am going to do, nothing is going to stop me,” she said.

“I see this as the continuation of trying to keep Iranian women down,” the activist told CNN.

Alinejad, who frequently shares photos and videos of what she says are “voiceless” Iranian women through her social media accounts, says Iranian officials recently warned her about continuing her activism.

A spokesperson for Iran’s Headquarter for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice announced in July that anyone who sends videos to Alinejad regarding the hijab or commits other anti-government activities is subject to a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

“It’s the 21st century: Enough is enough,” Alinejad said. “I left my country, Iran, to be safe, to be the voice for voiceless people. That’s my crime. I want to enjoy freedom of expression as an American.”

Georgia Tri-Cities HS coach Kenneth Miller suspended for restraining student with loaded gun

A Georgia high school coach was suspended after he defended himself and restrained a student who was in possession of a loaded weapon in school.

“I don’t feel like I did anything wrong,” Tri-Cities High School coach Kenneth Miller said, according to News 19. “I only adhered to what Fulton County School Board Policy says you’re allowed to do.”

Miller said that on Aug. 20, the school’s principal called him to her office about reports of students on campus with guns.

“During that process, we located guns. We saved lives,” Miller told Fox 5.

Miller confronted one female student while in the presence of police officers. Miller and the officers were unaware the student, who eyewitnesses described as belligerent and aggressive, had a gun at the time of the confrontation.

The situation escalated when the student hit Miller with a stapler, News 19 reported. Miller then grabbed the girl and restrained her until officers stepped in and took her into custody.

Kenneth Miller said he feels that he didn’t do anything wrong after being suspended for restraining a student who was in possession of a loaded gun in school.

Miller was initially fired, but the school district later reversed the decision to a suspension which has lasted months, News 19 reported.

“The district administration does not support Mr. Miller’s actions relating to this event and believes his conduct failed to meet the professional expectations it has for employees. Mr. Miller inappropriately intervened in a student matter being handled by school administrators and law enforcement. Mr. Miller acted outside of the scope of his authority and responsibilities,” Fulton County Schools said in a statement to Fox News Digital on Thursday.

“Mr. Miller’s conduct resulted in an escalation of a physical altercation with a student in crisis, which conflicts with district expectations to deescalate in these types of situations. Mr. Miller has not exhausted his due process rights at this time and remains on full, paid administrative leave.”

Miller’s lawyer called on school systems to support teachers who “get put in terribly dangerous situations.”

“Those teachers are our first line of defense against guns and other types of terrible violence that happens in schools,” Miller’s lawyer said.

A loaded gun was later found in her backpack. Another gun was also found that day, according to Miller, but it’s unclear if the same girl was in possession of that gun.

“I’m OK with him standing up for those children,” a supporter of Miller, Kavon Smith Arnold, told Fox 5. “What I’m not okay with is him being railroaded, because at the end of the day teachers are put in very uncompromising positions to take care of our children.”

2022 Arnold Palmer Invitational leaderboard, grades: Scottie Scheffler edges loaded field for Bay Hill win

The four best fields that the PGA Tour has seen early in 2022 were the Phoenix Open, Tournament of Champions, Genesis Invitational and Arnold Palmer Invitational. Scottie Scheffler has now won two of those four tournaments after winning on Sunday at Bay Hill by a single stroke over Tyrell Hatton, Viktor Hovland and Billy Horschel.

Scheffler shot a 72 on Sunday to finish 5 under for the week in brutal conditions. The scoring average in the final round ballooned to 75.5, but Scheffler beat the field by over three strokes over the final 18 holes by playing bogey-free golf on the back nine. He also led the field in strokes gained on approach shots on the week, but it was his short game that saved him a handful of times coming home in the finale. He made two 20-footers and got up and down six of nine times in the thick Bay Hill rough to come out on top.

“It was great,” said Scheffler. “I trusted myself and [caddie Ted Scott] as much as I have probably in any round. I did not swing the club well at all today off the tee. I was hitting a lot of bad spots, but I just kept grinding. I made some key putts towards the end and two great lie putts to finish off the round.”

The most extraordinary of those came on the 15th hole where he pulled his drive way to the left and tried to hood his second around a tree but barely made contact at all. He then got up and down from 149 yards to save his par run to close out the tournament. It’s his second victory in his last three starts and bumps him to No. 1 in the FedEx Cup standings and likely into the top five in the world when the Players Championship starts next week.

Bay Hill checks in as the fourth-best field of 2022, just behind Phoenix (which Scheffler also won). These are big-boy wins that may not be majors but certainly aren’t your average PGA Tour events, either.

Now Scheffler now has a couple of wins that are commensurate with the level at which he’s been playing for a few years now. Statistically, Scheffler has been playing like a top-20 player since the start of 2020. Until Phoenix a few weeks ago, he had no trophies to show for it. That’s golf sometimes. Winning can be (and often is) arbitrary, but now Scheffler has the titles to match his talent, and as a result, has become a bona fide star on the PGA Tour. Grade: A+

Here are the rest of our grades for the 2022 Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Viktor Hovland (T2): I was convinced throughout the day on Sunday that Hovland was the guy. He seemed the most in control throughout the week and the most poised to pounce at the end. However, he made bogey on three of his last six holes, which ultimately sunk him. Paul Azinger pointed this out on the broadcast, but if you want to pin his runner-up on one aspect of his game, it’s bunker play. He finished nearly last in the field in sand saves (3 of 13). The flip side of that? You know, not hitting it in the sand. That’s extraordinarily difficult when pins are cut so close to the edges like they are at Bay Hill, but some combination of smarter shots and defter touch out of the bunkers will win him this tournament nine times out of 10. Grade: A-

Rory McIlroy (T13): After shooting 65 in Round 1, McIlroy could have dropped three straight 72s and won the tournament by two. He could only manage one before shooting 76-76 on the weekend when the field average was 74-75 to drop out of the top 10 at this event for the first time in the last five years. His iron play looked tremendous on Thursday but faded the rest of the week, and he had his first bad putting week of 2022. Regardless, he didn’t seem too down afterward, and next week he’ll be aiming for his second Players Championship in his last three tries.

“The way the conditions are, it makes you feel as if you’re not playing as good as you are,” said McIlroy. “Like, I’m playing good. I’m hitting good shots. I’m swinging the club well. I’m chipping well. I’m putting well. But it can knock your confidence whenever the conditions are like this. I’m certainly playing better than shooting 8 over over the weekend. It’s just a matter of trying to regroup and forget about this week, and next week’s going to be a completely different test.” Grade: B+

Jon Rahm (T17): Rahm’s finish outside the top 10 was his second in a row on the PGA Tour. That’s happened just two other times since the 2020 Tour Championship, 18 months ago. That shows you the level at which he’s been playing for the last two years. As for what to be concerned about as the Players (where he’s contended before) approaches next week? His short game was awful at Bay Hill. That was obviously symbolized by his missed 10-inch putt on Thursday. He should be encouraged by a tee-to-green performance that was still elite (second in approach, fifth in driving), which should allow him to take some confidence into TPC Sawgrass despite the mediocre (for him) outcome in Orlando. Grade: B-

2022 NFL Scouting Combine Day 4 updates, results: Kyle Hamilton and a loaded cornerback group take the stage

The 2022 NFL Scouting Combine has reached the fourth and final day as the defensive backs and special teams players take the field. After today, prospects will return to training centers in preparation for Pro Days. Visits with teams will soon begin as well.

The cornerback group is relatively loaded with talent even with LSU’s Derek Stingley Jr. opting not to participate. Cincinnati cornerback Ahmad ‘Sauce’ Gardner, Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton, Washington cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Kyler Gordon, Florida cornerback Kaiir Elam and Clemson cornerback Andrew Booth Jr. are some of the elite talents expected to be on display. One sleeper to watch is Texas-San Antonio cornerback Tariq Woolen. He is a long prospect that is supposed to test very well.

In most years, the special teams do not get much love but this year is a bit different. San Diego State kicker/punter Matt Araiza was a weapon for the Aztecs last season. He will partake in drills. A year ago, Florida kicker Evan McPherson was preparing for the 2021 NFL Draft and would go on to be one of the postseason stars.

Follow along in our live blog below for more analysis and background on the prospects participating Sunday! You can also catch up on the first three days of the combine below as well.

Here’s why Twitter, Uber, and more are giving fully loaded M1 Max MacBook Pros to engineers

Apple introduced the new line of MacBook Pro last October during its “Unleashed” event. With impressive improvements over the most recent Intel chips and even the M1 processor, the company has been very successful with the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips.

With that in mind, lots of tech companies are upgrading their staffs’ Macs with the incredibly powerful M1 Max MacBook Pro with 64 GB of RAM.

It all started with Uber employer Mahyar McDonald, who shared on Twitter that “all active iOS Engineers at Uber are getting upgraded to 16″ M1 Max MacBook Pros with 64GB of RAM.” He even says that this includes new hires, which also made his post very popular.

A week later, a senior employee of Twitter, John Szumski, shared similar news: “I’m excited to be rolling out fully loaded M1 Max MBPs to all of Twitter’s iOS & Android engineers! We’re seeing improvements in both top-line performance and thermal throttling that currently plague our Intel builds.”

On Linkedin, The Pragmatic Engineer‘s Gergely Orosz also noted that apart from these companies, Shopify is also giving “the latest M1 MacBook Pros to engineers, while letting people keep their Intel ones.” Orosz also shared some tidbits about why these big tech companies are spending so much money on these machines:

How much time would a $4,000, top-of-the market machine like the M1 shave off from each build? How much total time over 2 years? How much “value” does this time mean per engineer?

With the M1, the answer is a no-brainier. The $4,000 per engineer spent will bring back *so* much more productivity versus top-of-the-market Intel ones, including the 2021 one.

During the “Unleashed” event, Apple said that the M1 Max chip can more than double the M1 chip power. With even more RAM available, this new MacBook Pro has been really praised by developers, engineers, and pro users overall. These computers also got a new design, a brand-new display, and more ports.

Are you working at a big tech company that gave you a new M1 Max MacBook Pro? Tell us in the comments section below and read more about the power of these new Macs below.

Hezbollah ‘locked and loaded’ if Israel attacks – Nasrallah deputy

Any attack by Israel on Lebanon will be met with a response from Hezbollah, Deputy Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem said on Friday evening, according to Palestinian media.

“Any Israeli attack on Lebanon will be met with a response from Hezbollah. Even if [Lebanon] is dragged into a war, we will face the war. Our weapons are locked and loaded. If we need more, we have our ways to rearm ourselves,” he said, according to reports on Twitter.

“We are waiting for the Lebanese government’s position on the indirect negotiations with [the Israeli enemy] regarding the border issue, and when our turn arrives, we will do our duty,” he said.

“We will continue to bring oil as long as Lebanon’s central bank and Lebanese fuel companies do not supply Lebanon’s oil/fuel needs,” he added.

Qassem’s statement came on the backdrop of Lebanese President Michelle Aoun’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly earlier on Friday.

In his speech, Aoun called for a resumption of the indirect talks on Lebanon’s maritime dispute with Israel.

“We remain gravely concerned at Israel’s repeated threats against Lebanon and, more recently, Israel’s plans to carry out oil and gas exploration activities along the contested maritime border,” he said.

“We condemn any and all attempts to violate the limits of our exclusive economic zone and we maintain our right to the oil and gas found within that zone,” he said.

“Lebanon demands the resumption of indirect negotiations on the demarcation of the southern maritime borders in line with international law,” Aoun said. “We will not relinquish nor compromise on our border claims, and it is the role of the international community to stand with us.”

Israel and Lebanon began US-mediated negotiations regarding their maritime border in October 2020, which were the first talks between the countries in 30 years. The two Middle East neighbors hoped that settling the border dispute would encourage further gas exploration in the area.

Israel already pumps significant amounts of gas from the Mediterranean, but Lebanon has yet to do so.

After four rounds of talks, negotiations stopped in November. Israeli Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz accused Lebanon of changing its position seven times, presenting “positions that add up to a provocation.”

Aoun’s remarks came two weeks after a new Lebanese government was sworn in ending a 13-month long political crisis that began after a devastating blast destroyed the Beirut port on August 4, 2020.

Kassem’s statement may be an attempt to signal to the Lebanese people that despite Aoun’s condemnation of Israel’s actions, Hezbollah still sees itself as the true defender of Lebanon.

Pope Francis in Hungary: Orban gives Pope a loaded gift

Orban, a self-styled defender of Christian values, has rolled back civil liberties, ranging from migrant and LGBTQ+ rights to media freedom, and worked to erode judicial and academic independence in Hungary.

The Pope’s remarks appeared to criticize some of these policies, stressing the need for tolerance.

“This is what I wish for you: that the cross be your bridge between the past and the future. Religious sentiment has been the lifeblood of this nation, so attached to its roots. Yet the cross, planted in the ground, not only invites us to be well-rooted, it also raises and extends its arms towards everyone,” Francis said during his address while presiding over the closing Mass of the International Eucharistic Congress.

“My wish is that you be like that: grounded and open, rooted and considerate,” he added.

Orban’s personal gift to the Pope, however, appeared to underline his nationalist and anti-immigrant stance: a copy of a 13th century letter from Hungarian King Bela IV to Pope Innocent IV. The letter asked the then-Pope for help in resisting the Mongol invasion of Hungary and Europe.

Balazs Orban, Deputy Minister for the Prime Minister’s Office, described the gift on his Facebook page, saying, “there are many similarities between the situation at that time and today…we should learn from history.”

The Hungarian leader met the Pope privately in Budapest on Sunday, along with Vatican officials and Hungarian President Janos Ader. They discussed the protection of the environment, promotion of families and the role of the Catholic Church in Hungary, according to the Vatican.

When he landed in the Hungarian capital earlier that day, Francis said he was glad papal trips had “restarted” and that he would bring “the word and greetings to many people.”

This is the Pope’s 34th international trip and the first since he had a surgery for colon diverticulitis in July.
