Cowboys vs. Tom Brady closes a loaded wild-card weekend

The NFL playoff field is set.

The league released the schedule for the first round of the playoffs on Sunday night after the Detroit Lions beat the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. That game wrapped up the regular season, and earned the Seattle Seahawks the final playoff spot in the NFC.

Here’s everything you need to know headed into the wild-card round next weekend, which will kick off the road to Super Bowl LVII.

Wild-Card Weekend schedule

49ers vs. Seahawks

Saturday, Jan. 14 | 4:30 p.m. ET | Fox

Jaguars vs. Chargers

Saturday, Jan. 14 | 8:15 p.m. ET | NBC

Bills vs. Dolphins

Sunday, Jan. 15 | 1 p.m. ET | CBS

Vikings vs. Giants

Sunday, Jan. 15 | 4:30 p.m. ET | Fox

Bengals vs. Ravens

Sunday, Jan. 15 | 8:15 p.m. ET | NBC

Buccaneers vs. Cowboys

Monday, Jan. 16 | 8:15 p.m. ET | ESPN

NFC playoff picture

1. Eagles: Bye

After their win over the New York Giants, the Philadelphia Eagles clinched the NFC East and the top seed in the conference.

2. 49ers vs. 7. Seahawks

Saturday, Jan. 14 | 4:30 p.m. ET | Fox

The 49ers picked up their 10th straight win on Sunday with a rout of the Cardinals. Thanks to Seattle’s overtime win against the Rams, and the Lions knocking off the Packers in Green Bay, the Seahawks snuck into the final spot in the NFC.

3. Vikings vs. 6. Giants

Sunday, Jan. 15 | 4:30 p.m. ET | Fox

Neither the Giants nor the Vikings had anything to play for Sunday. The Vikings rolled past the Bears to wrap up their season, and the Giants rested just about everyone in their loss to the Eagles.

4. Buccaneers vs. 5. Cowboys

Monday, Jan. 16 | 8:15 p.m. ET | ESPN

Tom Brady and the Buccaneers locked up the NFC South last week despite finishing the year 8-9. The Cowboys, on the other hand, fell to the Sam Howell-led Commanders on Sunday in a brutal showing headed into the playoffs.

AFC playoff picture

1. Chiefs: Bye

The Chiefs locked up the AFC for the fifth time on Saturday with their win over the Raiders.

2. Bills vs. 7. Dolphins

Sunday, Jan. 15 | 1 p.m. ET | CBS

The Dolphins snuck past the Jets on Sunday to clinch a playoff spot, their first since 2016. The Bills had an emotional win over the Patriots, which helped knock New England out of postseason contention, after last week’s canceled game and Damar Hamlin’s terrifying collapse.

3. Bengals vs. 6. Ravens

Sunday, Jan. 15 | 8:15 p.m. ET | NBC

These two teams will play a rematch next week in Cincinnati after the Bengals beat the Ravens on Sunday 27-16. The Bengals will enter the contest on an eight-game win streak, while the Ravens may have to use third-string quarterback Anthony Brown once again.

4. Jaguars vs. 5. Chargers

Saturday, Jan. 14 | 8:15 p.m. ET | NBC

The Jaguars clinched their playoff spot with a win over the Titans on Saturday night. The Chargers had nothing to play for Sunday against the Broncos, but still played several starters — which turned out not to be a great idea.

Man with loaded gun in carry-on bag arrested at Newark airport on Thanksgiving

An unidentified man was arrested by police on Thanksgiving Day after he was found with a loaded gun in his carry-on luggage at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.

The man, who was from Delaware County, Pennsylvania, was carrying a 9mm handgun, loaded with 13 bullets, including one in the chamber, according to a press release Friday from the Transportation Security Administration. His name and the charges he faces were not immediately released.

Thomas Carter, TSA federal security director for New Jersey, said that arrest showed the vigilance of TSA officers.

“Getting caught with and arrested for carrying a loaded gun at our airport means this individual had a pretty bad Thanksgiving,” he said in the organization’s press release. “Our TSA officers are on the job this busy holiday weekend so that others can reach their destinations safely and spend the holiday with their family and friends. Our team is staying vigilant and focused on the mission to help ensure that prohibited items are not carried onto a flight.”

A loaded handgun was found in a passenger’s carry-on luggage by the TSA on Nov. 24, 2022, at Newark airport in New Jersey.

Transportation Security Administration

In addition to his arrest, the man faces a “stiff federal financial civil penalty that could run into thousands of dollars,” Carter said.

While travelers are allowed to fly with firearms, there are strict TSA rules for doing so. They must be unloaded and placed in a secure container in checked baggage. Airlines may also have their own requirements. Firearm possession laws also vary by state and locality. The TSA recommends passengers “do their homework” to avoid fines or other penalties.

The suspect is the third passenger to have been arrested this month at Newark airport for carrying a gun in “accessible property.” It’s the 14th such case at the airport in 2022.

In 2021, TSA officers detected 5,972 guns at security checkpoints nationwide. About 86% of the weapons were loaded.

Xbox Game Pass Surprisingly Loaded To Start October 2022

Screenshot: Asobo Studio / Focus Entertainment

The spooky season is upon us and a lowkey stacked October for Xbox Game Pass is bringing the rat kings, H. R. Giger body horror, and twee trick-or-treating to celebrate. Whether you just want to go medieval against online strangers in Chivalry 2 or bask in the striking beauty of A Plague Tale: Requiem’s beautifully grim depiction of war-torn 14th century France, Microsoft’s Netflix-like subscription service has plenty to offer this month.

Here’s everything coming to and leaving Xbox Game Pass in the coming weeks:

October 4

Chivalry 2 (Cloud, Console, and PC)

October 6

Medieval Dynasty (Xbox Series X/S)

The Walking Dead: The Complete First Season (PC)

The Walking Dead: Season Two (PC)

October 11

Costume Quest (Cloud and Console)

Eville (Console and PC)

October 13

Dyson Sphere Program (PC)

October 14

Scorn (Cloud, PC, and Xbox Series X|S)

October 18

A Plague Tale: Requiem (Cloud, PC, and Xbox Series X|S)

Released last year, Chivalry 2 is a first-person multiplayer fighter where players swing, slash, and claw their way to victory on a medieval battlefield. It’s daunting but a lot of fun once you loosen up and give yourself permission to have fun and be silly. A perfect addition to the low-stakes Game Pass buffet. Scorn, meanwhile, is the debut release from Ebb Software about exploring a mysterious world full of stomach churning and fleshy phenomena. It’s been delayed a bunch and a flashpoint for Kickstarter drama, but hopefully it delivers.

I’ll try not to hold a pillow up in front of my face too much while playing Scorn.

A Plague Tale: Requiem, on the other hand, is Asobo Studio’s follow-up to 2019’s disturbing rat infestation, A Plague Tale: Innocence. Hopefully everyone got a chance to check that out before it fell out of the Game Pass rotation last month. It was a moody adventure game that didn’t overplay its hand, and while Requiem seems slated to build out the game’s action, I hope it stays grounded. And if you have a PC, Dyson Sphere Program is one of 2021’s best spacefaring basebuilders.

Game Pass is also losing some games in the next few weeks, but fortunately nothing too devastating. The following are all gone as of October 15:

  • Bloodroots (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • Echo Generation (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • Into The Pit (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • Ring of Pain (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • Sable (Cloud, Console, and PC)
  • The Good Life (Cloud, Console, and PC)

Sable’s art style is one of the most striking in recent memory, and Bloodroots is a decent enough top-down beat ‘em up. I’ll be checking out Ring of Pain, which I’d never heard of before but is a card-based roguelike dungeon crawler. All of my Steam favorite tags are tingling.

Game Pass’ library has ebbed and flowed in recent months, but after a drier spell earlier in the year things are starting to pick up again. Most of 2022’s big blockbuster releases were delayed until 2023, but there’s plenty coming on Microsoft’s subscription service at least to stave off the drought.

Teen arrested with loaded semiautomatic in stolen car cut loose by NYC judge with no bail

A Massachusetts teenager arrested with a loaded gun while riding in a stolen car was cut loose by a Manhattan judge — despite prosecutors requesting bail over the suspect’s “extensive out of state ties,” The Post has learned.

Manhattan Criminal Court Judge John Zhuo Wang let 18-year-old Jaquan Gilliard walk on supervised release at his arraignment Monday on felony charges including second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Gilliard was a passenger in the back of the stolen 2014 Toyota Camry driven by his cousin — which the pair planned to take from Massachusetts to South Carolina — when they were busted Sunday on West 101st Street and Columbus Avenue, according to the criminal complaint against him.

A black semi-automatic pistol was found under the backseat floorboard, and Gilliard later allegedly admitted the weapon was his, prosecutors said.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office said that though it was the teen’s first arrest, prosecutors requested $20,000 bail, citing the nature of the crime and arguing the accused’s out-of-state ties made it unlikely he’d return to court “on his own.”

But Wang rejected that request, granting Gilliard supervised release until his next court date on September 2, a DA spokesperson confirmed. Attorney information wasn’t immediately available for Gilliard.

One police officer with two decades on the job bashed Wang’s decision, dubbing him, “Judge Letemgo.”

“You really think he’s going to come back to New York for his gun case?” the cop said.

Bragg’s office requested $20,000 bail due to Gilliard’s out-of-state status.

Gilliard’s cousin, 24-year-old Harold Milton, was arraigned separately Tuesday under a different criminal court judge, who set $3,500 bail or $7,500 bond, the DA’s office said.

That was still well below the $25,000 bail prosecutors requested during the hearing before Judge Soma Syed.

A spokesman for the Office of Court Administration said that although many factors go into a judge’s decision, under New York state laws, “bail is solely meant to ensure the defendant’s return to court. Nothing else.”

“Our criminal justice reform laws predispose against pretrial incarceration and give the arraigning judge narrow discretion, even on violent felony offences, while requiring them to consider both the least restrictive form of pretrial detention and if a monetary amount is set – that it be within the defendant’s ability to meet it,” Lucian Chalfen said in a statement.

Gilliard and Milton, who is also due back in court September 2, are each facing charges of criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of stolen property.

Man with loaded AK-47 arrested outside Iranian journalist’s Brooklyn home

Alinejad was targeted in an alleged kidnapping plot last year by Iranian nationals after speaking out against the Iranian regime. The indictment in that case alleged the plot was organized by an Iranian intelligence official, but Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied any involvement, calling the accusation “baseless and ridiculous,” according to semi-official Iranian state media.

Alinejad said she was home Thursday when federal agents informed her about the armed individual.

“I was told by the FBI to ‘stay away from your home,'” Alinejad told CNN by phone Sunday. “I was shocked. I couldn’t even believe it. I was telling myself, ‘if I opened the door, what was I going to do?'”

NYPD officers arrested Khalid Mehdiyev Thursday afternoon as he drove away from the Brooklyn neighborhood after he failed to stop at a stop sign, according to a federal criminal complaint obtained by CNN. It also said NYPD officers found he was driving without a valid license. Law enforcement officials later found a suitcase in the backseat of his vehicle containing an AK-47-style assault rifle loaded with a round in the chamber, an additional second magazine and $1,100 in $100 bills, according to the complaint.

He is charged with possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number. Mehdiyev is set to be back in court August 12. CNN has reached out to his attorney, Stephanie Marie Carvlin, for comment but has not heard back.

Law enforcement officials say they saw Mehdiyev, a Yonkers resident, in the Brooklyn neighborhood on two occasions last week, Wednesday and Thursday, and also discovered that he’d been issued a parking ticket in the same neighborhood the weekend before, on July 23, according to the complaint.

On Thursday morning Mehdiyev drove a gray Subaru Forester SUV with Illinois license plates and remained in the area for several hours where he “behaved suspiciously,” the complaint states. On one occasion, Mehdiyev got in and out of his car several times, ordered food delivery service to his car, and approached a home in the neighborhood — where Alinejad resides — peering inside the windows and attempting to open the front door, according to the complaint.

Alinejad says she was on a Zoom call with Chairman of the Human Rights Foundation, Garry Kasparov, and Venezuelan politician and opposition leader Leopoldo López when she found out about the armed individual.

“I’m glad my friend @Alinejad Masih is healthy and safe and that the police acted capably against what might have been a deadly situation,” Kasparov tweeted from his verified account Sunday.

The activist shared a security video on her official Twitter account of the man who she says federal agents told her was the same man arrested by police Thursday.

“These are the scary scenes capturing a man who tried to enter my house in New York with a loaded gun to kill me,” she tweeted, although no gun can be seen in the image. “Last year the FBI stopped the Islamic Republic from kidnapping me. My crime is giving voice to voiceless people. The US administration must be tough on terror.”

Alinejad says she has spoken monthly with federal agents since the alleged kidnapping attempt last year.

“I really thought that the plot was over. I thought, ‘OK, I can focus on my job’ — which I am going to do, nothing is going to stop me,” she said.

“I see this as the continuation of trying to keep Iranian women down,” the activist told CNN.

Alinejad, who frequently shares photos and videos of what she says are “voiceless” Iranian women through her social media accounts, says Iranian officials recently warned her about continuing her activism.

A spokesperson for Iran’s Headquarter for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice announced in July that anyone who sends videos to Alinejad regarding the hijab or commits other anti-government activities is subject to a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

“It’s the 21st century: Enough is enough,” Alinejad said. “I left my country, Iran, to be safe, to be the voice for voiceless people. That’s my crime. I want to enjoy freedom of expression as an American.”

CNN’s Liam Rielly contributed to this report.
