Dave Chappelle attacked: LAPD releases photos of replica handgun-knife allegedly seized from suspect at Hollywood Bowl

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Video shows the exact moment a man ran on stage and attacked comedian Dave Chappelle at the Hollywood Bowl.

The footage obtained by TMZ shows the suspect – who has since been identified as 23-year-old Isaiah Lee – running onto the stage and tackling the comedian.

According to an update issued by the Los Angeles Police Department on Wednesday, Lee was armed with a replica handgun-knife.

Police released photos of the replica, whose knife blade extends outward from underneath the gun’s barrel.

Lee was taken into custody Tuesday night.

The video shows Chappelle falling back but managed to quickly free himself as security rushed out to grab the attacker.

According to ABC News, Chappelle and the man tussled on the stage floor. Security staff surrounded and tackled the man in the rear corner of the stage.

Chappelle appeared to run toward the altercation, saying the man was being “stomped” and asked repeatedly for security to remove the man from stage.

Exclusive footage from AIR7 HD captured the attacker on a gurney as he was being loaded into an ambulance to be taken to a hospital for unspecified injuries.

Lee was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and is being held on $30,000 bail, according to LAPD booking records. It’s unclear what motivated Lee to run onto the stage.

“The replica handgun, which contained a knife blade, was recovered and booked as evidence,” police said in a statement.

A spokesperson for Chappelle issued a statement Wednesday, calling the incident “unfortunate and unsettling” but saying he refuses to let it overshadow the record-breaking performance at the Hollywood Bowl.
She noted that the comedian continued with his show and worked with Jamie Foxx and Chris Rock to help calm the crowd with humor. He is cooperating with the police investigation into the incident.

Spokesperson Carla Sims’ statement reads:

“Dave Chappelle celebrated four nights of comedy and music, setting record-breaking sales for a comedian at the Hollywood Bowl. This run ties Chappelle with Monty Python for the most headlined shows by any comedian at the Hollywood Bowl, reaching 70k fans of diverse backgrounds during the first Netflix Is A Joke: The Festival, and he refuses to allow last night’s incident to overshadow the magic of this historic moment.”

“As unfortunate and unsettling as the incident was, Chappelle went on with the show. Jamie Foxx and Chris Rock helped calm the crowd with humor before Chappelle introduced the last and featured musical guests for the evening, hip-hop artists yasiin bey and Talib Kweli, a.k.a. Black Star, who performed music from their new album – the first in nearly 24 years – which was released on Luminary. Other special comedic guests last night included Earthquake, Leslie Jones, Jeff Ross, Sebastian, Jon Stewart and Michelle Wolf.”

A spokesperson for Netflix also issued a brief statement: “We care deeply about the safety of creators and we strongly defend the right of stand-up comedians to perform on stage without fear of violence.”
The comedian was not injured in the attack and later joked with the audience about it.

Comedian Chris Rock, who performed earlier in the night, came on stage with Chappelle moments after the attack and joked: “Was that Will Smith?”

Dave Chappelle was attacked onstage, video shows. A suspect is in custody, LAPD says

“A famous comedian was performing at the Hollywood Bowl. He had finished his act and as he was exiting the stage, a male who was part of the audience jumped on the stage and tackle(d) this celebrity to the ground,” said LAPD spokesperson Officer Lizeth Lomeli.

The suspect, 23, was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and taken to a hospital for medical treatment, Lomeli said. The victim “was not injured as a result of the crime,” she said.

The weapon was a “knife blade,” Lomeli said.

LAPD Officer Rosario Cervantes told CNN the suspect had a knife that was a replica handgun.

The motive of the apparent attack remains unclear.

It also wasn’t clear whether Chappelle filed an official police report.

Chappelle was performing at “Netflix is a Joke: The Festival.”

Jed Simon, an audience member who was at the show told CNN that Chappelle was finishing up his set and was about to introduce a musical act when a man climbed up to the stage and tackled the comedian.

Simon said he was sitting in the third row and was enjoying the show with his friends when he witnessed the incident.

“Some guy in front of us just climbed up on the stage. I was like ‘what the f*** is happening? He came right from the audience.” Simon told CNN. “Next thing I know he lunges at Dave and tackles him to the ground pretty aggressively. I was like what is going on?”

CNN correspondent Rachel Crane was also in the audience and described the bedlam after the attack.

According to Crane, the suspect was wearing a backpack. He was dragged stage right, where he was being subdued, when Chappelle said, “Don’t do this on stage, take him off.”

CNN has requested comment from representatives for Chappelle, Netflix and the festival. CNN has also reached out to the Los Angeles Fire Department and the Hollywood Bowl for more information.

Chase: Suspect leads LAPD on lengthy, slow-speed chase in Mid-City

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — A driver led police on a slow-speed chase on surface streets in the Mid-City area Friday night.

There were several times in the chase when the driver would stop the car and get out to point at police officers and make hand gestures to simulate a gun being fired.

Each time the driver would stop, he would get back into the car and continue driving at speeds that wouldn’t exceed 40 mph.

Multiple LAPD patrol vehicles were behind him as the driver, a possible assault suspect, kept driving and stopping.

The man was possibly armed, police say.

It appeared spike strips deployed by police were successful in flattening the tires of the suspect’s vehicle.

AIR7 HD was over the chase around 10:50 p.m. and the driver continued fleeing police past 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

Chase: Driver doing ‘donut’ stunts during wild chase in LA area

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — A driver was taken into custody after doing “donuts” and speeding across Los Angeles during a dangerous chase Thursday evening.

AIR7 HD was over the pursuit around 9:30 p.m. as the driver in a black sedan was in the Elysian Park area on the 5 Freeway.

Prior to that, Glendale police was in pursuit of the suspect who was driving recklessly on surface streets and later did “donuts” before getting on the freeway.

When the chase was in the Chinatown area, the driver was again spinning in circles at intersections.

There were times the suspect would drive on the wrong side of the road or stop in the middle of the street before taking off again. At one point, it appeared authorities stopped pursuing the suspect because of the erratic driving.

The suspect also hit another car and came close to hitting other vehicles.

The chase went through several areas, including downtown L.A., East L.A. and South L.A.

As the chase entered Leimert Park, the rear bumper on the suspect’s car was hanging off .

Eventually, the suspect surrendered in the South L.A. area after about an hour into the chase.

Los Angeles police officers injured in vehicle crash while responding to an emergency call in downtown LA

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Two Los Angeles police officers were among three people taken to a local hospital after a car crash in downtown L.A.

Officials say all three suffered non-life-threatening injuries and are in stable condition.

The crash happened Sunday just after 4 p.m. in the 1000 block of S. Main Street, near the entertainment complex L.A. Live, officials said.

The L.A. Fire Department, who responded to the scene, initially reported that the crash happened at the end of a pursuit. LAPD later said the officers were actually responding to a report of a man with a gun.

As the officers crossed the double yellow line to try and get around traffic with their lights and sirens on, the agency said a van made a left turn and collided with the police vehicle.

Two other people declined medical treatment following the crash, according to LAFD.

No further details were immediately known.

Los Angeles street gangs targeting wealthy in rash of robberies: LAPD

Over a dozen street gangs in Los Angeles have set their sights on wealthy residents in the city as part of a disturbing, violent robbery pattern that has victimized hundreds of people, police said Tuesday.

At least 17 street gangs based mostly in South Central Los Angeles had staged more than 200 strong-arm robberies in the past 15 months, with five occurring this week, police said.

“In my 34 years in the LAPD, I have never seen this type of [coordinated] criminal behavior,” said LAPD Capt. Jonathan Tippet, leader of a “follow-home robbery” task force.

The criminal’s often used spotters to track people wearing high-end watches or driving expensive cars in the city’s upscale neighborhoods. The crooks then have associates follow the targets to steal their jewelry, handbags or cars, Tippet said.

“We have seen countless individuals traumatized by having a gun pointed at them,” he added.

“Many others are dealing with the trauma and injuries from being tackled, kicked, beaten, punched and are pistol-whipped to the head.”

On Monday, a woman was hit by a robber’s car when she tried to run off after they smashed her vehicle window while stopped at a red light.

The thieves made off with her Rolex after she tossed it in the street, security footage showed.

In another instance, a suspect was arrested for allegedly taking two watches worth $600,000 from a targeted victim, according to authorities.

The robberies are often violent, with some victims being pistol-whipped.

Thirteen victims had been shot in “follow-home robberies” since the start of last year, and two of them were killed, officials said.

Many of the attacks took place in the city’s Jewelry District and the LAPD’s Hollywood and Wilshire Divisions, according to police.

Several dozen people had been arrested by the task force for robbery, weapons crimes, attempted murder and suspicion of murder, officials said.

52-year-old man fatally shot while walking dog in Mid-City, LAPD says; shooter at large

MID-CITY, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — A 52-year-old man was shot and killed while walking his dog Saturday morning in Mid-City, prompting a search for the shooter, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

The incident occurred about 5 a.m. near the intersection of Genesee Avenue and Saturn Street, the LAPD said in a news release.

According to investigators, after a dark sedan approached the victim, the suspect exited the vehicle and exchanged words with the dog owner, then fired “multiple” shots. The shooter fled the scene in the sedan, heading northbound on Genesee Avenue.

The dog, which was uninjured, returned home and awakened other family members, a police spokesperson told ABC7.

The shooting victim was discovered about 6:15 a.m. authorities said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Grieving family members identified him as Marcos Sandoval.

The motive for the killing is under investigation, the LAPD said.

“I woke up to two men, what sounded like an argument, not yelling but like loudly talking, which I thought was unusual. It’s a super quiet neighborhood,” said a witness who did not want to be identified. “And then a few minutes went by, maybe five, and I heard two shots, I didn’t know that they were gunshots.”

“It’s really sad. I don’t know what else to say. You know, people, hug your loved ones. Don’t take anything for granted cause, you know, tomorrow’s not promised,” said neighborhood resident Angela Johnson.

A description of the shooter was not available. Police were examining surveillance video from the area.

A memorial of flowers and candles was left on the street Saturday night near the corner where the senseless murder occurred.

“He would always put me and my sister first, before anyone,” said one of Sandoval’s daughters as she held the family dog. “And it’s just not fair that they just took him away from us like that.”

Sandoval’s family says he made his living as a painter, and describe him as a hardworking, friendly man who had no enemies.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact West Bureau Homicide detectives at (213) 382-9470.
