Keenan Anderson video: LAPD faces scrutiny after death of Black man who was repeatedly shocked with Taser

LAPD begins year with series of encounters that ended with three men dying

LAPD begins year with series of encounters that ended with three men dying

04:26

Los Angeles police are facing scrutiny following the in-custody death of a cousin of a key figure in the Black Lives Matter movement. Keenan Anderson, a 31-year-old Washington school teacher who was visiting Los Angeles, died early this month hours after officers repeatedly shocked him with a Taser.

Police said that when they arrived at the scene of a traffic accident on Jan. 3, in the L.A. neighborhood of Venice, they found Anderson running into the street and exhibiting “erratic behavior.”

The release Wednesday of dramatic body-camera footage of the incident has sparked angry demands for greater accountability by a police force that has faced past accusations of needless brutality.

In the footage, Anderson is seen lying on a pavement, held down by officers as another repeatedly shouts, “Turn over or I’m gonna Tase you” and “Stop it or I’m gonna Tase you!”

A clearly agitated Anderson shouts back, “They’re trying to George Floyd me… They’re trying to kill me” and “Help, please — I’m not resisting, I’m not resisting.”

Anderson’s death — he was the third person to die in police custody in L.A. so far this year — sparked angry reaction.

Mayor Karen Bass demanded the immediate suspension of the police officers involved, pending the outcome of an investigation.

And Rep. Barbara Lee of California tweeted: “I am outraged and heartbroken for Keenan… senselessly murdered by the police.”

She called for “systemic reform.”

In a video statement before the bodycam footage, LAPD Capt. Kelly Muniz, a spokeswoman, said investigations into officers’ use of force can often take up to a year to complete.

“Our understanding of the incident may change as…additional evidence is collected, analyzed and reviewed,” Muniz said.

Anderson’s cousin Patrisse Cullors co-founded the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020 amid outrage over the videotaped killing in Minneapolis of Floyd, a Black man, under the knee of a White police officer.

Anderson, who was eventually handcuffed and shackled, was taken to a hospital and died four hours later.

No cause of death has been officially established.

A statement from LAPD said Anderson had resisted arrest.

“Officers struggled with Anderson for several minutes, utilizing a TASER, bodyweight, firm grips, and joint locks to overcome his resistance,” it said.

But Cullors and others questioned that version of events.

“My cousin, Keenan, was actually really scared and he was asking for help repeatedly, and unfortunately that’s not what he received from LAPD,” Cullors told the Los Angeles Times. “Why wasn’t there help? Why wasn’t my cousin offered medical attention” at the scene.

PnB Rock’s girlfriend Stephanie Sibounheuang breaks silence about his murder, says rapper ‘saved my life’

The devastated girlfriend of late rapper PnB Rock broke her silence Thursday following his horrific murder that took place in front of her.

Stephanie Sibounheuang was having lunch with the Philadelphia native, whose real name is Rakim Hasheem Allen, when a robber shot him at Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles in Los Angeles on Sept. 12.

The “Selfish” hitmaker, 30, was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Speaking out about the harrowing ordeal, Sibounheuang — who shared 2-year-old daughter Xuri with PnB Rock — said she’s “100% not ok” a month later.

“My man saved my life, throwing me under that table. I’m not supposed to be here but bc of him. I am. No one would be able to handle this,” she wrote alongside a video comprised of clips of the pair.

“To witness what I saw and to keep seeing it in my head, to being forced out the restaurant, to not be able to go in the ambulance or the hospital, car keys, purse and my phone taken from me, forced in the back of a police car, locked in an interrogation room all night, while all this is going on and to be the last person in this world to know my man didn’t make it after having the faith and confidence that he was,” Sibounheuang continued.

Moments before the shooting, Sibounheuang shared a picture of the pair’s lunch on her Instagram story and tagged the location of the eatery. She deleted the post soon after.

Three people — a 17-year-old, his father, Freddie Lee Trone, 40, and Shauntel Trone, 32 — were arrested over the killing. Shauntel was busted for accessory to murder, according to the LAPD.

Days following his death, PnB Rock was the most streamed rapper on Apple Music.

Rock, who gained national fame in 2015, is best known for his single “Selfish” which reached No. 51 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song soared to the top of the charts in the days following his death, becoming the most streamed song in the US on Apple Music on Sept 15.

A California man was arrested and charged with attempted murder after he allegedly attacked a police officer during a protest of the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent abortion reversal, police said.

Michael Ortiz, 30, and Juliana Bernado, 23, were among those arrested during a clash with police officers in the downtown Los Angeles area Friday as people gathered to protest the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Michel Moore said.

“The vast majority of those involved were peaceful and law-abiding, however, a much smaller group of individuals took to the streets with the intention of creating chaos and destruction,” the LAPD said.

Attacker at Encino Hospital Presented Himself as a Patient, Then Stabbed 3, LAPD Says – NBC Los Angeles

Just days after deadly gun violence erupted in a hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a man was accused of stabbing a doctor and two staff nurses inside Encino Hospital Medical Center Friday.

The Los Angeles Police Department said he presented himself as a patient before the shocking attack.

The attacker was finally in custody late Friday after a four-hour-long standoff.

The suspect was later identified by police as 35-year-old Ashkan Amirsoleymani.

He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, and booked on three counts. His bail has been set at $3 million.

The Los Angeles Police Department tried and failed to negotiate with the man who hid out near the emergency room after critically wounding three healthcare professionals and throwing Ventura Boulevard into chaos.

SWAT teams moved carefully as other first responders surrounded the medical center located at 16000 block of Ventura Boulevard where at 3:50 p.m. they alleged the suspect entered the ER and assaulted two nurses and a doctor.

One ultrasound technician saw him moments before the attack.

“He looked high. He just looked very anxious. He was sweating a lot. Half his shirt was drenched with sweat. He had a dog with him,” Benjamin Roman said.

LAPD eventually contained the attacker in a room near the ER as they cleared the first floor.
Passersby on busy Ventura Boulevard couldn’t believe their eyes.

ulsa Police Chief Wendell Franklin revealed Thursday that the man who opened fire at a medical center purchased an AR-style semiautomatic rifle just hours before fatally shooting four people including a doctor who recently treated him.

“We saw people coming out. Bloody people, kind of. Regular patients too. I think they were kind of evacuating,” witness BraydenMordkowitz said.

“I’m praying for all their families. The doctors, the nurses, the patients. I’m disgusted by all the violence that’s been happening lately,” witness Mia Abramovitch said.

Dignity Health Northridge Hospital Medical Center said Saturday two of the victims were treated and released. One victim remains in the hospital in fair but stable condition.

“We eventually had to employ some of our other methods outside of negotiations and he was taken into custody. He was being transported to a local hospital for now, for injuries that appear to be self inflicted. He’ll be treated there and subsequently booked,” Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton of the LAPD Valley Bureau said at a news conference outside the medical center.

A doctor and two nurses were reportedly hurt. Officials said the three hurt were in critical condition. Beverly White reports June 3, 2022.

An officer at the scene told reporters the attacker’s identity was known to authorities, that he has had several previous run-ins with police and has been arrested twice in the past for assaulting police officers. His most recent arrest occurred last year, police said.

“He’s been arrested for battery on a police officer and resisting arrest in the past here in the San Fernando Valley,” Hamilton said.

The LAPD said it doesn’t appear he targeted anyone in particular.

Pat Koren was waiting outside the hospital among the crowd that had formed. She feared her friend was hurt.

“I know she’s working. I see her car. I hope she’s good, and the bad people are going to get caught,” she said.

She later confirmed her friend, an ER doctor, was among the three wounded.

LAPD said the attacker acted alone. They recovered the weapon at the scene, described as a knife with a 3 to 4-inch blade.

All three were initially in critical condition and transported to a local trauma center, a hospital spokesperson and LAFD said.

Dignity Health Northridge Hospital Medical Center said the three patients were stable later Friday evening.

The hospital was on lockdown, and surrounding streets were shut down.

After hours of being in a standoff with police, LAPD confirmed the attacker had been taken into custody around 8:30 p.m.

Details about the victims’ identities were not immediately available, but a hospital technician told NBCLA he saw a female doctor and two nurses with stab wounds.
