NBA trade rumors: Warriors and Kings interested in Matisse Thybulle; Knicks a suitor for Pistons forward

The 2023 NBA trade deadline is now just over a week away on Thursday, Feb. 9, and as such the rumor mill is heating up. So far there hasn’t been much in the way of news about potential blockbusters, but there are plenty of role players available that could help contenders bolster their squads for the stretch run.

Here’s a look at the latest from around the league:

Matisse Thybulle’s defensive capabilities have never been in question; the 76ers wing made All-Defensive Second Team in 2021 and 2022, and finished fourth in the league in steals last season at 1.7 per game. Whether he can do enough on offense to stay on the floor and make his defense worthwhile, however, has always been up for debate.

While the Sixers tried to make it work in the past, they’ve been less interested in doing so this season. Thybulle is down to just 12.1 minutes per game, and has only made spot starts here and there. With an uncertain restricted free agency approaching this summer, the team could look to move him at the deadline.

If so, he will have suitors, including the Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The Warriors have been short on defensive-minded wings since losing Gary Payton II and Otto Porter Jr. in the summer, while the Kings could really use a defensive stopper as they make their playoff push.

Knicks looking at Bey

The New York Knicks’ roller coaster season is heading downhill again, as they’ve lost six of their last eight games to fall back to seventh place in the Eastern Conference at 27-25. They’re still just two games back of the Miami Heat for a top-six spot, however, and figure to be one of the more active teams at the deadline; it’s no secret they want to get back to the playoffs after missing out last season.

To that point, they are interested at Detroit Pistons wing Saddiq Bey, per SNY. The Pistons have had a disastrous season and currently sit in last place in the Eastern Conference at 13-39. Everyone assumes they will be sellers at the deadline, and teams have been making calls about a number of their players — most notably Bojan Bogdanovic.

Whether Bey will be on the move remains to be seen, but with just one year left on his contract after this season, perhaps there’s a deal to be had. It seems likely that the Knicks, or any other team, will really have to make it worth the Pistons’ while, however. Though Bey perhaps hasn’t improved as much as the team would have hoped since his rookie season, he’s still a big, physical wing who has made 37 percent on catch-and-shoot 3s this season, and rebuilding teams aren’t eager to let players like that go.

Pacers’ Tyrese Haliburton leaves loss to Knicks with knee injury

NEW YORK — Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton left Madison Square Garden using crutches after hurting his left knee in a 119-113 victory for the New York Knicks on Wednesday night.

“He’ll get looked at tomorrow closely,” Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said, adding that while he hoped it wasn’t anything serious, he assumed Haliburton would be unlikely to play either Friday or Saturday at home against the Atlanta Hawks or Memphis Grizzlies.

“He’s walking out of Madison Square Garden on crutches, so I would guess his availability on Friday will be in question, and probably Saturday, too,” Carlisle said. “But who knows.

“One of the great things about Tyrese is he has been banged up the last year and a half that he’s been with us and he always wants to play. He always wants to play, and it’s something that’s really helped our culture as a team. So we’ll hope for the best. We’re surely not going to put him in harm’s way.”

Haliburton has had an All-Star-level season for the Pacers in his first full year in Indiana. The 6-foot-5 guard had 15 points and seven assists Wednesday night before exiting the game after an awkward fall on a drive late in the third quarter.

On the play in question, which happened with just over 2 minutes, 30 seconds to go in the third, Haliburton lost his right shoe, but he fell awkwardly and hurt both his left knee and elbow on the play.

Indiana was already without starting center Myles Turner, after a case of back spasms flared up on him following Indiana’s pregame meeting and just before the Pacers were going to take the floor.

“We finished our team meeting, and Myles had a spasm, a reaction in his back. It tightened up pretty significantly. Trainers worked on him for a while, and then he was ruled out,” Carlisle said.

The veteran coach then laughed over the speculation at Turner’s late scratch that a trade had been agreed to with another team.

“He has not been traded,” Carlisle said with a smile. “Believe me, I have no interest in trading Myles Turner.”

Luka Doncic destroys Knicks in unprecedented fashion: Seven numbers to know from Mavs star’s historic night

USATSI

Luka Doncic put on one of the greatest performances in NBA history on Tuesday night, tallying a stat line that’s impossible to believe even as I sit here and write it: 60 points, 21 rebounds and 10 assists in the Mavericks’ absolutely wild 126-121 overtime victory over the Knicks.

This marks the first 60-point, 20-rebound triple-double in NBA history, and just the second 60-point triple-double of any kind, joining James Harden’s 60-11-10 line from a 2018. Here are seven numbers to know from Luka’s unprecedented night:

  1. First 60-point, 20-rebound, 10-assist game all-time
  2. Second 60-point triple-double all-time (James Harden, 60-11-10)
  3. First 60-point, 20-rebound game since Shaq in 2000
  4. NBA’s first 60-point game this season
  5. Mavericks single-game scoring record
  6. Doncic career high (points and rebounds)
  7. Doncic’s 56.3 Game Score sixth best since 1983-84

That last number is per our CBS Sports research department. Game Score reflects the full box score in identifying the best single-game performances. Here are the only five that have topped Doncic’s 56.3 since 1883-84:

  1. Michael Jordan (64.6): 69 pts, 23-37 FG, 18 Reb, 6 Ast, 4 Stl
  2. Kobe Bryant (63.5): 81 pts, 28-46 FG, 18-20 FG, 3 Stl
  3. Karl Malone (60.2): 61 pts, 21-26 FG, 19-23 FT, 18 Reb
  4. David Thompson (57.0): 73 pts, 28-38 FG, 17-20 FT, 7 Reb
  5. James Harden (56.6): 60 pts, 10 Reb, 11 Ast, 17-18 FT, 4 Stl
  6. Luka Doncic (56.3): 60 pts, 21 Reb, 10 Ast, 21-31 FG, 16-22 FT

Wilt Chamberlain’s numbers are supposed to be mythical. Doncic is out here topping them. The most points Wilt ever scored in a game in which he also tallied 20 rebounds was 53.

I mean this was just crazy how easy Luka made this look. There is no way that a Mavericks victory should have been possible. They were down by nine with 33 seconds to play. With 4.2 seconds remaining and Dallas trailing by two, Luka missed a free throw on purpose, wound up winning the tip-drill rebound, and scored to tie the game.

Another number for your consideration: 13,884. That’s the number of games in which a team led by at least nine points with 35 or fewer seconds remaining coming into Tuesday. Want to know how many of those teams lost the game? Zero. Not one. Sorry, Knicks fans.

“I’m tired as hell,” Doncic said in his postgame interview. He should be. It’s not often that we can say something like this, but we may never see another game like this in our lifetime. That includes everyone reading this. Everyone on the planet, in fact. Regardless of age. I know records are made to be broken and all, but a 60-point, 20-rebound triple-double could feasibly stand forever.

Is this showing enough to move Doncic to the front of a crowded early MVP race? It’s hard to argue against it. On a night when Joel Embiid dropped 48 and 10, Doncic made that line look downright childish in drawing basically even with Embiid as the league’s top scorer (33.7 to 33.6). But this goes beyond the numbers. A night like this hits on a gut level. Doncic is the most mesmerizing player we have in today’s game. He took our breath away yet again on Tuesday.

Luka Doncic makes NBA history with historic triple-double in Dallas Mavericks’ win over the New York Knicks

CNN
 —

Luka Dončić put up a historic triple-double in the Dallas Mavericks’ thrilling 126-121 overtime win over the New York Knicks on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old recorded a career-high 60 points and a career-high 21 rebounds to go with 10 assists, helping the Mavericks come from nine points down with just 33 seconds of regulation time remaining.

It is the first time in NBA history that a player has reached that stat line.

“I’m tired as hell,” Dončić said after the game. “I need a recovery beer.”

In the past 20 seasons, all 13,884 NBA teams that have trailed by at least nine points with 35 seconds or fewer remaining have gone on to lose the game, according to ESPN.

However, in a dramatic final play, Dončić intentionally missed a free throw and then secured the rebound, before scoring the putback to tie the game and force overtime.

The Slovenian star scored 10 points in the final minute of regulation time and added seven more in overtime to pull off the most improbable of wins.

Dončić also joins James Harden as the only other player in NBA history to score a 60-point triple-double, and also becomes just the sixth player to record six or more 40-point triple-doubles after Oscar Robertson, Harden, Russell Westbrook, Wilt Chamberlain and LeBron James.

“We just saw it on the screen right now,” Dončić said of his scoring feat. “We were watching NBA TV. I mean, it’s just incredible to be in those comparisons and just to be with those guys, at any stage. It’s amazing for me.”

Dončić’s 60 points also set a new franchise scoring record for Dallas, overtaking the 53 points scored by Dirk Nowitzki against Houston in 2004.

“Just with age, he has a birthday coming up here in the new year, I think he’s seen it all at the age of 23,” Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd said of Dončić becoming a leader. “But just his competitiveness to win is at a very high level – and you saw that displayed tonight.

“Things weren’t going well. Give the Knicks credit, they were making a lot of threes that we didn’t think were possible. They were playing harder. We were down 10. We’ve been in this position earlier in the season, when you talk about giving up a lead or giving up a game like this.

“Just to be able to stay together and trust, Luka had a big part in that. He never was discouraged that the game was over. As you can see, he’s picking up full-court, we had a big jump ball. There’s a lot of things we’ve learned from our losses in close games like this.”

The Mavericks improve to 19-16 on the season and climb to sixth in the Western Conference, while the Knicks have now lost four straight to sit sixth in the East.

Jalen Brunson leads Knicks past Warriors for eighth straight win

Tom Thibodeau was close with Jalen Brunson the person, having known him since he was a young child. He had only watched him from a distance as a player, first in high school, then college and later the NBA.

But almost immediately after Brunson agreed to join the Knicks, his new coach had a good idea of why Brunson was going to be so valuable as his new point guard.

“I’ll be honest with you, when we first signed him he started coming in immediately in the summer and I knew right then, just by what he was doing,” Thibodeau said. “Not by what he was saying. Not by anything other than the way he came in and the way he worked each and every day. I knew that was exactly what we needed.”

Through the season’s first 31 games — in good times and bad, when he’s at less than 100 percent, when games are on the line — it has become clear what the addition of Brunson has meant to the Knicks. After Brunson inked that four-year, $104 million deal to leave the Mavericks, there was a narrative that he was overpaid. So far, it has been the opposite.

His brilliant first season as a Knick continued Tuesday, in the form of a 22-point, five-assist, no-turnover masterpiece that led the Knicks to a 132-94 blowout of the defending champion Warriors and extended their NBA-leading win streak to eight. For the first time in nine meetings at the Garden, the Knicks beat the Warriors. This time, they had the star point guard on their side, as Golden State was without Stephen Curry due to a left shoulder injury, and they treated the Warriors like a sparring partner, instead of the other way around.

Brunson set the tone — with his scoring in the first half and passing after the break. He had plenty of help, four teammates in double figures. Immanuel Quickley snapped out of a shooting slump to hit five 3-pointers and score 22 points, Quentin Grimes had 19 points as he continued his impressive play and RJ Barrett contributed 18 points and five assists. Julius Randle was again a force inside, notching 15 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Jordan Poole led the Warriors (15-17) with 26 points.

After averaging over 27 points on the recent 3-0 road trip, Brunson picked up where he left off. He scored 16 points in the opening half on a variety of midrange jumpers, and went on a personal 9-0 run in the second quarter that gave the Knicks their largest lead of the first half at 57-43.

The ball moved well in the opening half, the Knicks racking up 15 assists on 24 made field goals and shooting a blistering 52.2 percent from the field. They hit 10 of their 19 3-point attempts, three apiece from Grimes and Quickley, and were dominant on the glass, owning a 22-14 edge. The lead was 13 at the break, and really could’ve been larger had the Warriors not shot so well from deep, making eight of 21 attempts.

There was a scare late in the first half that halted the positive vibes momentarily. Grimes landed on the foot of Warriors guard Ty Jerome, and appeared to turn his right ankle. Jerome was assessed a Flagrant 1. Grimes hit two free throws, came out of the game, but started the second half.

Brunson used the pass instead of the shot in the third quarter, stacking up four assists in the early portion of the period as the Knicks threatened to run the Warriors off the Garden floor. After hitting a jumper, Brunson set up a Grimes 3-pointer and Barrett layup on consecutive possessions, keying a 16-6 run that pushed the Knicks lead to a then game-high 21. It nearly doubled from there, ending in a 38-point win.
