From Trump to Kanye and Musk: why are the super-rich buying social media sites? | Digital media

Ever wonder what the richest man in the world buys? Elon Musk, rated No 1 by Forbes on its 2022 list of billionaires, may soon own a social media network imbued with so much political capital it could fracture nations.

It’s the latest expression of an uncomfortable truth: tech CEOs have become the most crucial political gatekeepers in modern media history. Not by running for office – a cliche for today’s moneyed elite – but by using social media ownership as a proxy for political influence.

It’s a trend years in the making. From the political largess of former Facebook executives like Sheryl Sandberg and Joel Kaplan to the metapolitics of Peter Thiel, tech titans have long adopted an inside/outside playbook for conducting politics by other means.

But recent developments, including Donald Trump’s investment in Twitter clone Truth Social and Kanye West’s supposed agreement to purchase ailing social network Parler, illustrate how crucial these new technologies have become in politics. More than just communication tools, platforms have become the stage on which politics is played.

Trump, for one, appears to have understood the trend. Despite all his storm and bluster, the former president never cracked the top 1,000 of the Forbes richest list, but he and Musk do appear to have one thing in common: they’re both investing in social media companies they intend to use to transform politics and society.

The vision of social media owners like Musk and Trump for the internet’s future could profoundly impact the political landscape.

In our new book, Meme Wars: The Untold Story of the Online Battles Upending Democracy in America, my co-authors and I trace the rise of global communications companies through the eyes of the bad actors who have used these technologies to gain recognition. As researchers, we were alarmed by the power of social media companies to influence politics from Occupy to the January 6 insurrection. We charted the rise of technology companies in the last decade and their changing content moderation policies to show how the design of social media platforms provides strategic advantages to those willing to employ digital dirty tricks to incite the public. The way that Trump was able to mobilize a large group of rioters to disrupt the election process proved that It Can’t Happen Here had been happening for years.

As technologies like YouTube, Twitter and Facebook have become more and more consequential for how the public gathers information about politicians and elections, so has the power of those who control them. In our digital age, the information superhighway is full of tolls, from the purchasing of legitimate pathways through digital advertising to preferential fast passes by tech CEOs and dark money used to game algorithmic recommendations and search engine optimization. And because there are no regulations for the integrity of civic information online, the public is betrothed to the whims of CEOs’ personal moral codes.

That means that Musk’s vision for Twitter matters. Musk has stated that he plans to take Twitter private and perhaps roll it into a new app. In May, he said he’d reverse the platform’s ban on Trump, potentially paving the way for the return of others from the former president’s digital army, like US conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, the far right activist Milo Yiannopoulos, Baked Alaska (the former Buzzfeed journalist turned white nationalist livestreamer who was arrested after the January 6 insurrection) and the far right nationalist Nick Fuentes. All of these pundits have attained political superstardom by riding the wave of support for Trump’s Make America Great Again movement, while also using social media – and livestreaming in particular – to broadcast conspiracy theories, violence and hate.

Musk, and other new platform owners, not only influence what information gets shared. They could also remove guardrails on the ways platforms are used to move money. No doubt whatever Twitter morphs into, it will include some form of digital cash exchange as another way to undermine the power of governments. If you don’t believe me, remember that Wells Fargo carried packages before it turned into a bank.

Further, politicians turning to tech companies for support begins with political messaging and could easily morph into political donations of another sort: from silencing opponents and amplifying preferred candidates to sowing confusion during moments of crisis.

Trump’s return to Twitter could signal a smash-and-grab on the White House, or perhaps it could mean nothing at all – just as Ye’s antisemitic tweets won’t mean much until they are quoted in the manifesto of the next mass murderer (similar to how “subscribe to PewDiePie” only became a commonly known phrase after the influencer was quoted by a mass shooter who killed more than 50 people at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand).

The success of figures like Musk and Trump to use social media platforms also depends on buy-in from the public at large. If journalists abandoned Twitter, it would no longer have the social and political influence it does now.

In many ways, the infamous provocateur journalist Andrew Breitbart was right: politics are downstream of culture. To this I’d add that culture is downstream of infrastructure. The politics we get are the ones that sprout from our technology, so we should cultivate a digital public infrastructure that does not rely on the whims of billionaires. If we do not invest in building an online public commons, our speech will only be as free as our hopefully benevolent dictators say it is.

N.O.R.E. apologizes to George Floyd’s family for Kanye West’s comments

CNN
 —

N.O.R.E., co-host of “Drink Champs,” is expressing regret over allowing Kanye West to make controversial comments during the podcast.

The rapper called “The Breakfast Club” radio show Tuesday to address what happened with West on the Revolt.TV show.

“I just want to be honest, I support freedom of speech,” N.O.R.E said. “I support anybody not being censored. But I do not support anybody being hurt. I did not realize that the George Floyd statements [made by West] on my show were so hurtful.”

During his appearance, West made antisemitic comments and suggested George Floyd was killed by a fentanyl overdose, despite a medical examiner’s testimony that fentanyl was not the direct cause of Floyd’s death, only a contributing factor when he died after being knelt on by a police officer.

N.O.R.E. has come under fire for not pushing back on West during the interview. He explained to “The Breakfast Club” that the controversial Floyd comments happened during the “first five minutes of the show” and said West told the producer that if they stopped filming he would walk out.”

“I wanted the man to speak,” N.O.R.E. said. “Later on I actually checked him about the George Floyd comments, I actually checked him about the ‘White Lives Matter’ but it was so later in the episode…I was so inebriated at the time that maybe people looked over it.”

“But I apologize to the George Floyd family, I apologize to anybody that was hurt by Kanye West’s comments,” he added.

Lee Merritt, a civil rights attorney who has represented the Floyd family on matters in the past, told CNN Monday that he has put together a team to explore a possible suit against West at the request of Floyd’s brother, Philonise Floyd.

On Tuesday, lawyers representing Roxie Washington, the mother of George Floyd’s daughter, provided CNN with a cease-and-desist letter addressed to West. They indicated they intend to also file a lawsuit “for harassment, misappropriation, defamation, and infliction of emotional distress.”

N.O.R.E. was asked during his call with “The Breakfast Club” if he was aware of the possible legal action and whether he too might he be a target of that. He said that while he knew about it, “It’s not even about suing or the money, It’s about the hurt from the thing.”

“I was locked down, I’m a supporter of the George Floyd movement,” he said. “I saw that video too. I seen that cop’s knee on his neck. I seen [Floyd] calling for whoever. I’m embarrassed of myself.”

N.O.R.E. said he spoke with West Tuesday and told him he would be addressing what happened. The episode has since been removed.

Kanye West: Lawyers for George Floyd’s daughter draft cease-and-desist letter to artist

CNN
 —

Lawyers representing Roxie Washington, the mother of George Floyd’s daughter, have drafted a cease-and-desist letter to Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, over comments he made claiming Floyd was killed by a fentanyl overdose.

On the podcast “Drink Champs,” West claimed George Floyd was killed by a fentanyl overdose, despite a medical examiner’s testimony that fentanyl not the direct cause of Floyd’s death, only a contributing factor when he died after being knelt on by a police officer.

Attorneys at Witherspoon Law Group told CNN the comments were especially damaging to Gianna Floyd, George Floyd’s daughter.

“She’s a little girl that’s been traumatized and is being re-traumatized by Kanye West,” attorney Kay Harper Williams said of George Floyd’s daughter. It’s “intentional infliction of emotional distress,” she added.

When CNN sat with then-6-year-old Gianna Floyd in June 2020 she didn’t say a word during the interview.

The attorneys have indicated they intend to also file a lawsuit “for harassment, misappropriation, defamation, and infliction of emotional distress.”

CNN has reached out to a representative of Ye for comment.

As of Tuesday, the episode of “Drink Champs” appeared to have been removed from YouTube and Revolt TV. However, “it still exists, that does not remove it from the universe,” said Williams.

“Too little too late, the harm has been done to our client,” she added.

A cease-and-desist letter, provided to CNN, was addressed to an attorney they believed was representing Ye, however, they told CNN they were informed this attorney was not actually affiliated with Ye in this matter. They’re actively trying to make sure it’s received, though they added there will be more pressure once the lawsuit is formally filed.

Regarding a separate legal effort being explored by attorney Lee Merritt, who has represented the Floyd family on matters in the past, Williams told CNN the two legal have not been coordinating efforts up to this point.

Merritt told CNN on Monday that Floyd’s brother contacted him to pursue a defamation suit against the star.

While that’s not legally possible because George Floyd is deceased, Merritt said, there are other legal avenues to pursue, including the Floyd family possibly suing for intentional infliction of emotional distress.

“I have put together a working team to investigate [Ye’s] statements and to investigate the source of those statements,” Merritt said.

CNN has reached out to Merritt for comment on the cease-and-desist letter.

“George Floyd, just like Gianna said, changed the world so to have Kanye West come back and speak in a way that’s harmful to that legacy,” Williams said, “I’m offended as a human, as a black woman, as a mother.”

“Gianna is a child and she’s being harmed,” she added.

“There’s a really important discussion right now around the country about speech,” said Witherspoon. “But at the end of the day you cannot say these things that are false.”

Mother of George Floyd’s daughter files $250M lawsuit against Kanye West for comments on his death

HOUSTON – The mother of George Floyd’s daughter has filed a $250 million lawsuit against rapper Kanye West following his recent comments on Floyd’s death.

In a news release from Witherspoon Law Group and Dixon & Dixon Attorneys at Law, Floyd’s family issued a cease-and-desist letter to West, also known as Ye’, for his comments about the 2020 death of the man at the hands of Minneapolis police that sparked a worldwide movement against police brutality.

In West’s recent appearance on the Drink Champs podcast, West made controversial statements about Floyd’s death, saying he died as a result of fentanyl use.

Hennepin County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Andrew Baker said during his testimony that while Floyd’s heart disease and use of fentanyl were contributing factors to his death, they were not the direct cause.

Dr. Vik Bebarta, an emergency physician, toxicologist, and professor at the University of Colorado in Denver, said Floyd died because of how Officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee down on Floyd’s neck for 9 1/2 minutes as he told officers, “I can’t breathe.” He also backed up other experts who have faulted officers for failing to roll Floyd on his side, as they had reportedly been trained, so that he could breathe.

In a news release that discusses the lawsuit filed by Roxie Washington, the mother of Gianna Floyd, lawyers said West made “false statements about George Floyd’s death to promote his brands, and increase marketing value and revenue for himself, his business partners, and associates.”

The release also says that West stated “malicious falsehoods” about Floyd in order to profit from his death and the family’s trauma.

The full interview has since been removed from the Drink Champs YouTube and Revolt TV, but clips of the comments have continued to circulate on the internet and social media.

“The interests of the child are priority,” Attorney Nuru Witherspoon, partner at The Witherspoon Law Group, said. “George Floyd’s daughter is being traumatized by Kanye West’s comments and he’s creating an unsafe and unhealthy environment for her.”

The rapper was locked out of his Twitter account and restricted on Instagram amid backlash over antisemitic posts.

Kanye West spends money ‘like it’s water,’ living in luxury hotels and rentals, friend tells TMZ

Kanye West has been like a vagabond recently as he has blown through tons of cash as he jumps from city-to-city while staying in luxury hotels and fancy rental homes.

The 45-year-old artist – who boasts an impressive an impressive portfolio – has opted to not stay in any of the homes he has purchased and instead live life as a transient who has splashed a ridiculous amount of cash.

Of his spending habits, a source – who claims to be one of Kanye’s former friends – told TMZ on Tuesday: ‘He blows through his money like it’s water.’

BMF: Kanye West (seen in London last month) has been like a vagabond recently as he has blown through tons of cash as he jumps from city-to-city while staying in luxury hotels and fancy rental homes

The insider told the publication that he rarely stays in the same place for more than a few days and that he spends money like it’s nothing including footing the bill for his Yeezy fashion show in Paris earlier this month.

He definitely has the capital to spend as his net worth is an estimated $4billion according to Celebrity Net Worth.

TMZ also notes that their insider claims that the All Of The Lights hitmaker has made some bold business decisions including firing Shervin Pishevar from Yeezy in addition to other advisors and publicists.

During a recent interview on Drink Champs, Ye said that he had recently purchased a $50million penthouse which is another addition to his already packed real estate portfolio.

Of his spending habits, a source – who claims to be one of Kanye’s former friends – told TMZ on Tuesday: ‘He blows through his money like it’s water,’ the 45-year-old artist is seen in LA on Friday

Kanye already owns many multi-million dollar properties including one notably across the street from estranged wife Kim Kardashian.

In December 2021, the Yeezy founder – who shares four children with his 41-year-old ex – bought a 3651 square-foot, 5-bedroom home in LA’s exclusive Hidden Hills for $4.5which he still has not lived in.

Months earlier in September 2021, he dropped a whopping $57.3million on a sprawling beachside home in Malibu in an off-market deal.

The stunning property which looks like a piece of art was designed by Japanese Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando and was built by Marmol Radziner.

Earlier this week, Kanye launched into another anti-Semitic rant as he discussed a sex story involving his estranged wife Kim and her ex-boyfriend Pete Davidson.

The rapper shocked fans last week when he tweeted that he was going to ‘go death con 3 on Jewish people…’ which resulted in him being banned from the microblogging app.

Yet he doubled down on his view during an interview on Drink Champs as he claimed that Kim discussing her sex life with Pete alluded to Jewish Zionist practice.

West was referring to a scene on the The Kardashians, in which Kim, 41, spoke about how she slept with Pete, 28, in front of a fireplace in tribute to her grandmother.

Rant: Kanye claimed Kim’s recent sex confession with Pete Davidson was spurred on by ‘Jewish Zionists’ as he doubled down on anti-Semitic claims in an interview on Drink Champs

In his rant, West told hosts N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN: ‘We Jew so I can’t be anti-Semite. First of all, I need my stadiums back. The 78 media outlets that called me an “abuser” when I was trying to get… Pete Davidson away from my kids that was tattooing my kids’ names on him, Skete.

‘Kim is a Christian – on TMZ, I just saw it yesterday, it said, “Pete Davidson and Kim had sex by the fireplace to honor they grandmother,”‘ he said.

‘It’s Jewish Zionists that’s about that life, that’s telling this Christian woman that has four black children to put that out as a message in the media.’

He continued: ‘So when I drive by and I see the Hulu ads and I see the JP [Morgan Chase] ads, I’m gonna let y’all know right now, the devil is a defeated foe – you can’t poison me.’

Kardashian filed from divorce from West in February of 2021, and the former couple are parents of four children: North, nine, Saint, six, Chicago, four, and Psalm, three.

Former flames: Kardashian was romantically-involved with Saturday Night Live star Davidson from October last year to August

Kardashian was romantically-involved with Saturday Night Live star Davidson from October last year to August.

Prior to their split, Kim opened up about one of their sexual encounters while speaking with her grandmother on her reality show.

She said: ‘You know what’s so crazy? Pete and I were staying at the Beverly Hills Hotel last weekend and we were sitting in front of the fireplace just talking for hours.

‘I was like, “My grandma told me that you really live life when you have sex in front of the fireplace. And so, we had sex in front of the fireplace in honor of you. I know that’s probably creepy.”‘

Claims: West said that ‘it’s Jewish Zionists that’s about that life, that’s telling this Christian woman that has four Black children to put that out as a message in the media’

West’s vitriolic message against Jewish people was his second in as many weeks, as last week he tweeted: ‘I’m a bit sleepy tonight but when I wake up I’m going death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE … The funny thing is I actually can’t be Anti Semitic because black people are actually Jew also … you guys have toyed with me and tried to black ball anyone whoever opposes your agenda.’

In the controversial interview, West also said ‘the Jewish media blocked me out’ after a previous interview with a separate outlet was not aired; and that ‘Jewish people control the Black voice.’

West said he spoke without fear of harming his professional or personal life, as he said he has already been subject to numerous consequences.

‘Y’all already f****d with me so much you already Black Mirrored me; you already made people think I’m crazy, you already took my family away, you already separated all my friends. I don’t got no celebrity friends.’

West also took aim at talk show host Trevor Noah, who has past been critical of his behavior amid a public series of outbursts aimed at Kardashian and Davidson earlier this year.

‘Trevor Noah, not even from America, he just looks Black right?’ West said. ‘Gonna say, yo, Kim it’s gonna get dangerous, he putting all that “He so crazy, he’s so OJ.” Nori just wants the family back together, I just want the family back together.’

Elsewhere during the interview, West said: ‘Jewish people have owned the black voice. Whether it’s through us wearing a Ralph Lauren shirt, or it’s all of us being signed to a record label, or having a Jewish manager, or being signed to a Jewish basketball team, or doing a movie on a Jewish platform like Disney.’

Candid: Prior to their split, Kim opened up about her sexual encounter with Davidson while speaking with her grandmother Mary Jo ‘MJ’ Campbell in a segment on the show

He continued: ‘I respect what the Jewish people have done and how they brought their people together. You know they came into money through the lawyers. After Wall Street, when all of the Catholics, they wouldn’t divorce people, so the Jewish people came in they were willing to divorce people and that’s when they came into their money.’

West said that he and other black people are the ‘darker Jews’ as they are part of the 12 lost tribes of Israel. ‘We’re Jewish also. We’re from Africa also. We’re the blood of Christ. We’re not just black,’ he went on.

The rapper said that venture capitalist Ben Horowitz once called him to complain that Jay-Z was giving away ‘Jewish business secrets.’

Blocked: In the controversial interview, West also said ‘the Jewish media blocked me out’ after a previous interview with a separate outlet was not aired

Last week , the Holocaust Museum in Los Angeles invited the Chicago rapper to visit their exhibitions. The museum said in an Instagram post: ‘Words matter and words have consequences Ye. We urge you to come visit us at Holocaust Museum LA to understand just how words can incite horrific violence and genocides.

The post continued: ‘The Holocaust started with only words that sadly begat stereotypes, racial and religious tropes and blaming others and led to the murder of six million Jews.’

According to the American Jewish Council, Jewish people are the targets of 60 percent of religious hate crimes in America despite making up two percent of the population.

Shocking: West’s vitriolic message against Jewish people was his second in as many weeks, as last week, as he posted an antisemitic message October 7 after he faced restrictions on Instagram

Kanye West claims a Jewish ‘media mafia’ is out to get him

Kanye West sparred on live TV with Chris Cuomo as the host ripped his “ugly,” “demonstrably false” and “inherently antisemitic” claim that an all-controlling “Jewish underground media mafia” is out to get him.

The rapper-turned-fashion mogul sat in the back of a car for a feisty interview Monday on Cuomo’s NewsNation show in which he was challenged over earlier saying he was “going death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE.”

Cuomo repeatedly challenged the star, now known as Ye, as he doubled down while trying to justify his slurs.

“Every celebrity has Jewish people in their contract — this is not hate speech, this is the truth,” Ye insisted, while repeatedly claiming that as a black man he cannot be accused of anti-Semitism.

“And these people, if you say anything out of the line with the agenda, then your career could be over,” Ye claimed.

“When I wore the White Lives Matter T-shirt, the Jewish underground media mafia already started attacking me.

“They canceled my four SoFi stadium shows [in Los Angeles], they had the press … immediate disrespect me [and] keep the crazy narrative going,” Ye claimed while constantly complaining about Cuomo’s retorts.

“They never call me a billionaire,” he griped. “Hey, tycoon, billionaire, visionary, inventor — these are never used,” he said.

He singled out the New York Times for only referring to him as “thug rapper,” even though a search suggests the Gray Lady has only used the term once in a review in 2006, before he was known for his other endeavors and not in a direct reference to him.

At one point, he compared his anger at Jewish business partners to women disliking men after having “one bad man” in their lives.

“There’s got to be over 10 times that I’ve been screwed or bad business has been done to me just in the two years alone,” he said, making the leap because “over 50% of the executives and CEOs in Hollywood are Jewish.”

Cuomo repeatedly fired back, telling Ye that his “ugly” thoughts “are not things you can say coming from a place of intelligence or love or anything productive.”

“So, look, there is no Jewish media cabal [or] mafia. That is a figment of either your imagination or a projection of a prejudice, OK,” the fired CNN host stressed firmly.

“You may have had bad business dealings with people — it’s about those people. It’s not about their religion or faith. And I know that you’re intelligent and understand that when you target people because of their faith, other people may do so the same.”

“They’ve been targeted before, they’ve been abused and killed because of what they believe and who they are.”

“So we don’t want to tolerate that, and you are playing into that right now whether you know that or not,” Cuomo added.

He also reminded Ye that there’s a crucial, clear difference between “saying they’re a mafia and act as ‘Jews’ in some way as opposed to being just businessmen.

“One plays to a prejudice, the other one just plays to people and an ugly business, which is what the record business is,” Cuomo stressed.

Tap the right side of the screen below to watch this web story:

Ye insisted he was “not backing down” — and at one point childishly chanted “la-la-la-la” to stop Cuomo arguing against him.

He also insisted he was “coming from a place of love” — as well as “a place of ‘we’re not gonna be owned by the Jewish media anymore.’”

As to the accusation that he is anti-Semitic, Ye again claimed that “black people also Jew — I classify as Jew also, so I actually can’t be an antisemite. So the term is actually — it’s is not factual.”

At the end of their fiesty exchange, Cuomo suggested that Ye seems “out of control,” asking if he was taking care of himself.

Angered, Ye asked Cuomo if he had worked out that morning, to which the host replied: “No. But I took my medicine — I took my antidepressant medication that I take every day.”

Kanye West gets upset when Chris Cuomo pushes back on ‘Jewish underground media mafia’ comments

Kanye West appeared on Cuomo Monday, where he doubled down on the anti-Semitic sentiment the rapper expressed in a recent tweet, causing his account to be locked. Chris Cuomo tried to explain to Ye that he has to understand why his comments are being taken the way they are, but to no avail.

“Look at how your point was gonna start: ‘You have to understand.’ But the thing is,” Ye said, “the Jewish people that I’m talking about don’t have to understand, and that is that privilege that I’m not gonna allow.”

Ye offered the uproar to his wearing a White Lives Matter shirt as a legitimate reason for his slander against the Jewish community.

“When I wore the White Lives Matter t-shirt, the Jewish underground media mafia already started attacking me,” Ye said, before referencing canceled concerts, and public tiffs with Pete Davidson and Trevor Noah. He added, “They just immediately disrespect me. They keep the crazy narrative going. They never call me a billionaire.”

Ye went on to complain that the media refers to him as a rapper rather than a tycoon, a visionary, or an inventor. He later claimed to have received death threats after wearing a Make America Great Again hat, from his “Jewish managers,” his “Jewish lawyer” and his “Jewish accountant.” He walked back the claim about his accountant.

It was recently reported that anti-Semitic comments by Ye were edited out of a recent interview with Fox News’s Tucker Carlson, but that was not the case on Cuomo. And Cuomo eventually pushed back against Ye’s rhetoric.

“You’re trying to say that there isn’t a collective. Over 50% of the executives in Hollywood, the CEOs, are Jewish,” Ye said. “And these guys know each other.” “That’s different than saying it’s a mafia,” Cuomo responded, “and that they act as Jews in some way as opposed to just being businessmen.”

When Cuomo once again cut in to correct Ye’s slanderous language, Ye made it clear that he had no interest in listening. As the two talked over each other, and Cuomo tried to explain to Ye what was wrong with what he was saying, Ye broke out into a childish, “La la la la la la,” to avoid hearing what Cuomo had to say.

Cuomo airs weeknights at 8 p.m. on NewsNation.

Atlanta councilwoman regrets establishing ‘Kanye West Day’ after his George Floyd comments

Natalyn Archibong is a former Atlanta city council member who initiated a strong campaign to have a Kanye West Day back in 2021. Now after Kanye’s rambles about George Floyd having died of a fentanyl overdose rather than police brutality, the ex-councilwoman terribly regrets having a part in the city’s day named after the rapper.

She wants to distance herself from Ye

Natalyn Archibong has said that she wants to distance herself from the rapper and producer after the anti-Semitic remarks as well as all of the drama that has circled around Kanye West recently after he resurfaced and has been apparently off the rails dishing out one controversial statement after another.

Kanye West was born in Atlanta

The former congresswoman was part of Atlanta’s city council last year and she mentioned that there were several reasons why back in 2021 she spearheaded the Kanye West Day initiative. First and foremost, West was born in Atlanta, Georgia, secondly Donda West attended Morris Brown College, and according to Natalyn “the proclamation was an acknowledgment of his substantial contribution to the arts.”

Kanye West Day was named the day he began his Donda tour in Atlanta on July 22, 2021

Natalyn has mentioned that she did not want to revise history, but if she’d known how West was going to react, she would have not taken the initiative to honor the rapper with a very important distinction.

It can’t be erased or repeated

The thing about having a day named after a person is that it can’t be taken back, according to her, and it can’t be repeated either.

Archibong also commented that the “July 2021 proclamation did not envision that in 2022, the artist formerly known as Kanye West would boldly make such ugly and hurtful statements.”

Family of George Floyd considers legal action over Kanye West comments | Kanye West

The family of George Floyd has said it is considering taking legal action against Kanye West after the rapper alleged that the 46-year-old man died from drug abuse.

Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of Floyd’s murder in May 2020. He knelt on Floyd’s neck for around nine minutes while the unarmed Black man was handcuffed and lying face down on the street, crying “I can’t breathe”.

West (who has legally changed his name to Ye) made the claims in an appearance on the Drink Champs podcast on Saturday while discussing a new documentary by conservative commentator Candace Owens – frequently by West’s side during his recent run of antisemitic and racist comments – titled The Greatest Lie Ever Sold: George Floyd and the Rise of BLM [Black Lives Matter].

“They hit him with the fentanyl, if you look the guy’s knee wasn’t even on his neck like that,” West said on the podcast.

Civil rights lawyer Lee Merritt responded to West’s claims on behalf of Floyd’s family.

“While one cannot defame the dead, the family of #GeorgeFloyd is considering suit for Kanye’s false statements about the manner of his death,” he tweeted on 16 October.

“Claiming Floyd died from fentanyl not the brutality established criminally and civilly undermines and diminishes the Floyd family’s fight.”

Floyd died as a result of “cardiopulmonary arrest complicating law enforcement subdual, restraint and neck compression”, according to the final autopsy findings of Dr Andrew Baker, chief medical examiner for Hennepin county. Although fentanyl was found in Floyd’s system, it was not enough to be considered fatal.

Cardiologist Dr Jonathan Rich told the court at Chauvin’s trial: “I can state with a high degree of medical certainty that George Floyd did not die from a primary cardiac event, and he did not die from a drug overdose.”

West’s comments have been widely condemned by fellow musicians and religious leaders.

Elsewhere in the interview, West continued to make antisemitic statements and said that four concerts he had scheduled at the Los Angeles SoFi stadium had been cancelled by the venue owners after he tweeted that he was “going death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE” on 9 October. Twitter removed the tweet for violating the platform’s rules.

In response, the Los Angeles Holocaust museum invited West to visit “to understand just how words can incite horrific violence and genocide”. On the podcast, West responded: “I want you to visit Planned Parenthood, that’s our holocaust museum.”

After making his remarks about Floyd, West asked the podcast hosts whether they would be able to run the interview, in reference to his recent appearance on HBO’s The Shop, which was not broadcast owing to his use of what host Maverick Carter called “hate speech and extremely dangerous stereotypes”. Segments of an interview with Fox News host Tucker Carlson were also canned over West spouting racist conspiracy theories.

West wore a hat emblazoned with “2024”, presumably in reference to his intentions to stage a second presidential run after his failed bid in 2020, in which he appeared on only 12 state ballots and won fewer than 60,000 votes. The campaign reportedly violated fundraising rules.

West and Owens have been associated since around 2018 when West tweeted “I love the way Candace Owens thinks”. A Black author and commentator, she became known for her criticism of Black Lives Matter and her support of Trump. Recently, the pair debuted a “White Lives Matter” shirt at Paris Fashion Week.

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Oct. 17, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Parlement Technologies announced today that it has entered into an agreement in principle to sell Parler, the world’s pioneering uncancelable free speech platform, to Ye (formerly known as Kanye West). Ye has become the richest Black man in history through music and apparel and is taking a bold stance against his recent censorship from Big Tech, using his far-reaching talents to further lead the fight to create a truly non-cancelable environment.

“In a world where conservative opinions are considered to be controversial we have to make sure we have the right to freely express ourselves,” says Ye.

The proposed acquisition will assure Parler a future role in creating an uncancelable ecosystem where all voices are welcome. Ye can be found on Parler here.

Parlement Technologies CEO George Farmer welcomes Ye as a compatriot in the fight for free speech. “This deal will change the world, and change the way the world thinks about free speech. Ye is making a groundbreaking move into the free speech media space and will never have to fear being removed from social media again. Once again, Ye proves that he is one step ahead of the legacy media narrative. Parlement will be honored to help him achieve his goals.”

Under the terms of their agreement in principle, the parties intend to enter into a definitive purchase agreement and expect to close during the fourth quarter of 2022. The terms of the proposed transaction would include ongoing technical support from Parlement and the use of private cloud services via Parlement’s private cloud and data center infrastructure.
