Astronomers Find Rare Star System That Will Trigger a Kilonova

The universe has no shortage of oddities, and researchers at the National Science Foundation’s NOIRLab have observed another one in the form of a particular binary star system. The system, called CPD-29 2176, will eventually trigger a kilonova, a celestial event in which two neutron stars collide in a massive explosion that forms heavy elements, including gold and platinum.

CPD-29 2176 is located around 11,400 light-years from Earth and was found by researchers using NASA’s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. Astronomers then conducted more observations at NOIRLab’s Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. CPD-29 2176 is home to one neutron star and one massive star that is in the process of going supernova, only to become a second neutron star in the future. Eventually, the two neutron stars will collide, producing a kilonova, an explosion that is thought to produce bursts of gamma rays and large amounts of gold and platinum. The paper documenting the research team’s find is published today in Nature.

“We know that the Milky Way contains at least 100 billion stars and likely hundreds of billions more. This remarkable binary system is essentially a one-in-ten-billion system,” said André-Nicolas Chené in a NOIRLab press release. Chené is a NOIRLab astronomer and an author on the study. “Prior to our study, the estimate was that only one or two such systems should exist in a spiral galaxy like the Milky Way.”

While many stars implode was a powerful supernova when they die, the dying star in CPD-29 2176 is becoming an ultra-stripped supernova. An ultra-stripped supernova lacks the vast amount of force that a typical supernova has, since the dying star has had much of its mass stripped by its companion. The researchers think that the neutron star in the system was also formed with an ultra-stripped supernova and argue that this is the reason that CPD-29 2176 is able to remain as a binary—a typical supernova would have enough power to kick a companion star out of its orbit.

“The current neutron star would have to form without ejecting its companion from the system. An ultra-stripped supernova is the best explanation for why these companion stars are in such a tight orbit,” said lead author Noel D. Richardson, a physics and astronomy professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, in the NOIRLab release. “To one day create a kilonova, the other star would also need to explode as an ultra-stripped supernova so the two neutron stars could eventually collide and merge.”

It will take around one million years for the star undergoing ultra-stripped supernova to turn into a neutron star. It is then when the two stars will begin to spiral into each other, eventually resulting in the metal-producing kilonova, according to the research. In these dramatic cosmic endings, we can look forward to the creation of the same elements that make life possible.

Tobey Maguire tells Marvel he’d love to be cast as Spider-man

Look, everyone wants to play Spider-Man. It’s perhaps any actor’s most sought-after role behind Hamlet and The Joker. To prove yourself as a young Hollywood A-lister, you better start learning the phrase, “With great power comes great responsibility.”

One actor who would love to play Spider-Man is Tobey Maguire, an actor who has played Spider-Man four times. After playing Spider-Man throughout the 2000s, he donned the mask one more time for 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. For those counting at home, we have now said the name “Spider-Man” five times in this article.

“When they called initially, I was like, finally!” Maguire said in an interview with, ahem, Marvel. “I got the call and was immediately open about coming to do this. Not without nerves–you know, ‘What will this look like, and what will the experience be?’ But to get to show up with beautiful, talented, creative people and play together? It’s just like, ‘Yes!’ It’s fun and exciting.”

“I love these films, and I love all of the different series. If these guys called me and said, ‘Would you show up tonight to hang out and goof around?’ or ‘Would you show up to do this movie or read a scene or do a Spider-Man thing?’ It would be a ‘yes!’ Because why wouldn’t I want to do that?”

Maguire doesn’t appear on screen much these days, outside of going pure goblin mode in Babylon. Seeing as that movie didn’t do so hot; it makes sense that he’d tell Marvel that, yes, he’d love another job, especially if he has to “read a scene” or “do a Spider-Man thing” or simply hang out in the background of scenes until the other Spider-Men are ready for a hug. Fellow Spider-Man Andrew Garfield is also open to more, so we look forward to the Marvel Cinematic Universe becoming even more unwieldy, confusing, and laden with crossovers. Excelsior!

Fish Play Pokémon Scarlet And Violet, Commits Credit Card Fraud

Image: Nintendo / PNGWing / Kotaku / designer491 (Getty Images)

A YouTuber created an alternative Nintendo Switch controller for their pet fish, which allows them to play video games on livestream. That fish managed to spend real money on some digital purchases while trying to beat a gym leader in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet (h/t: GamesRadar). And all of this happened because Scarlet and Violet are so buggy that they can sometimes cause the game to crash to the home page.

Mutekimaru Channel is a popular Japanese YouTuber who streams fish playing video games via an assistive device—an initiative that was intended to help viewers stay home during the pandemic. When a fish swims over a certain area of the “controller,” the game registers it as a specific button input. It’s not just one fish playing Pokémon either. The owner of the channel rotates fish every twelve hours in order to keep them healthy.

If the entire story stopped at “a fish was playing Pokémon on stream,” then I would have been suitably impressed. But no, the fish took things a step further. Not only have multiple fish managed to travel through towns and the wilderness with a specialized controller, they have even managed to spend its owner’s real-life money. I’m a little afraid to think about what else these fish might be capable of. Armed robbery?

ライブ配信でペットの魚にクレジットカード情報を公開され、挙句の果てに決済されてしまった件について

Normally, only one fishy gamer is allowed into the Switch tank at any given time. Once the owner walked away from the game, multiple fish took over and planned their nefarious heist.

The fish had been in the middle of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, but the game crashed due to its infamous performance issues. Once the fish was taken to the main Nintendo Switch home page, they managed to open the eshop, where its owner’s credit card information had been saved (and doxxed as a result).

The fish added 500 yen into their owner’s account. Then it used the resulting Nintendo gold coins (a loyalty reward from digital purchases) to buy a golfing cosmetic from Nintendo Switch Sports. According to Sora News 24, the owner intends to request a refund from Nintendo.

Be careful out there, gamers. Not only can hackers and other unscrupulous types get your credit card information, so can common pet fish. So don’t put your credit card number on shared devices!

My manicure resulted in a cancer diagnosis

It was the manicure from hell.

When Grace Garcia decided to get a manicure in 2021, the mom of three had no idea the outcome would be a cancer diagnosis.

The San Gabriel, California, resident tried to book an appointment at her usual salon in November 2021, but since it was all booked up, she decided to try a different one.

At the new spot she visited near her workplace, the technician was “aggressive” when attending to the cuticle on her right ring finger.

Garcia said her finger looked “raw” after the manicure, recalling to FOX 11 that it “hurt a lot.”

“It just looked like a blister,” the 50-year-old said, noting it wouldn’t heal.

“She probably used the tool on a previous person. I have no idea,” she told Today.com. “It sprouted, whatever the thing was on my hand. … It popped up. It looked like a wart, and I’m like, ‘What in the world is this?’”

Three months after the manicure, the blister-like sore near her fingernail wasn’t getting any better. She then went to the doctor who sent her to a dermatologist for a biopsy on her finger.

“I knew it wasn’t good,” she said.

Almost immediately, she got an ominous phone call from her dermatologist.

Garcia noticed her finger hadn’t healed three months after the manicure.

“On my way to the car he called me. That scared me,” she admitted. “He said I need to come back.”

Garcia then went to UCLA health to see a specialist, Dr. Teo Soleymani, who said she had squamous cell carcinoma — a type of skin cancer caused by high-risk HPV (Human papillomavirus infection), possibly triggered by her manicure.

He told the publication he’s only seen a handful caused by manicures.

“Rarely do we see high-risk squamous cell carcinoma arising from this but I have had half dozen with this phenomenon,” he explained.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, workers must “clean and disinfect tools after each client according to the policies of your state’s cosmetology board.”

Garcia was officially diagnosed with Stage 1 cancer, but thankfully, she saw Dr. Soleymani early enough.

“Your outcomes are entirely dictated by how early you catch them, and very often they’re completely curable,” he told Today. “Her persistence, not only was she able to have a great outcome, she probably saved herself from having her finger amputated.”

Luckily, Garcia did not need radiation or “any additional treatment” thanks to her swift action.

“Anytime you have a growth that doesn’t go away in about four weeks, that’s kind of our cue,” Soleymani said. “You should see your dermatologist.”

“I fought all the way from day one,” Garcia said, “because I knew something was wrong.”

R.I.P. Adam Rich, former child star of Eight Is Enough

Adam Rich, the former child star who played youngest sibling Nicholas Bradford on the ’70s sitcom Eight Is Enough, died at his home on Saturday, per the Associated Press. He was 54 years old.

Best known for his role on ABC’s Eight Is Enough, Rich also made appearances on other television series throughout the ’80s and ’90s, including The Love Boat, The Six Million Dollar Man, St. Elsewhere, and Baywatch. His last major role occurred in 2003, when he played himself in the David Spade comedy Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star.

Rich suffered from addiction issues that contributed to legal trouble over the years, including an arrest in 1991 for attempting to break into a pharmacy, per the AP. He was open about his experiences with mental illness; publicist Danny Deraney told the outlet that the actor’s depression “defied treatment.”

“Adam was simply a wonderful guy. He was kind, generous and a warrior in the fight against mental illness,” Deraney shared in a statement posted to Twitter. “Adam did not have an ounce of ego. He was unselfish and always looked out for those he cared about. Which is why many people who grew up with him feel a part of their childhood gone, and sad today. He really was Americas Little Brother.”

Rich’s television brother Willie Aames posted his own remembrance to Facebook (per People), writing, “This morning [my wife] Winnie woke me with the heartbreaking news of Adam Rich’s passing. I’m gutted. Adam was more than a colleague. He was very much my only little brother. A lifelong friend.”

“These last few years Adam had dreams of renewing his career. He was one of those kid actors that our generation will always remember. I can’t tell you how many parents have told me they named their first child ‘Nicolas’ after his Eight Is Enough character,” Aames wrote. “The diminishing fraternity of kids that grew up in the golden years of family television has lost another of our own. I will miss him deeply. Rest ‘A.R.’ You were the cutest TV kid of them all.”

Betty Buckley, who played the Bradfords’ stepmother on Eight Is Enough, also posted a tribute to her co-star. “Adam Rich was a light and my young pal for the four seasons I was blessed to work with him on Eight Is Enough. I adored him and loved working with him in our scenes together on the show. He was so sweet, funny, fresh and natural,” she shared in an Instagram post.

“He brought a lot of joy to all of us on the show and to our audiences,” Buckley continued. “Adam and I have remained friends all of these years. His love and support have always meant a lot to me. I am shocked by the news I received this morning of his death. Sending my love and deepest condolences to his friends and family. In recent years Adam dedicated himself to providing inspiration for others with mental and emotional illness. I will miss him greatly.”

Prince Harry admits to ‘drinking heavy,’ using hard drugs

Prince Harry has revealed that in the decades-long wake of his mother Princess Diana’s death, he turned to “drinking heavy” and — and sampled a series of mind-altering hard drugs.

During an interview with Anderson Cooper Sunday night on “60 Minutes,” Harry, 38, answered questions about his tell-all book, “Spare,” which comes out Tuesday.

All week, Harry has been on a promotional tour for the book, which is filled with details such as William allegedly getting into a physical altercation with Harry over Meghan Markle, and Harry having a frostbitten “todger” during William and Kate Middleton’s wedding.

Cooper, 55, questioned Harry about his admitted substance abuse — including booze, cocaine, pot and more — in the past. Harry said he did it in response to his mother’s death.

“It was obvious to us as kids the British press’ part in our mother’s misery and I had a lot of anger inside of me that luckily, I never expressed to anybody,” he said. “But I resorted to drinking heavily.  Because I wanted to numb the feeling, or I wanted to distract myself from how … whatever I was thinking. And I would, you know, resort to drugs as well.”

He also said that he felt that using psychedelics, Ayahuasca, psilocybin, mushrooms, helped him.

“I would never recommend people to do this recreationally — but doing it with the right people if you are suffering from a huge amount of loss, grief or trauma, then these things have a way of working as a medicine. For me, they cleared the windshield, the windshield of the misery of loss. They cleared away this idea that I had in my head that– that my mother, that I needed to cry to prove to my mother that I missed her. When in fact, all she wanted was for me to be happy.”

Part of the reason why he turned to drinking and drugs was that after Princess Diana’s tragic fatal car crash in 1997, Harry and William shared “similar thoughts” on the belief that she was really gone.

“Maybe this is all part of a plan,” said Harry. “Then that she would call us and that we would go and join her, yeah.”

He said he held onto this belief for “years.” But when he was 20, he asked to see the police report about the crash that killed his mother, in order to have “proof.”

“Proof that she was in the car. Proof that she was injured. And proof that the very paparazzi that chased her into the tunnel were the ones that were taking photographs– photographs of her lying half dead on the back seat of the car,” he said.

When Cooper asked Harry if he feels that he’s gotten all of the answers about what really happened when Princess Diana died in 1997, Harry said, “Truth be known, no. I don’t think I do. And I don’t think my brother does either. I don’t think the world does.”

Fire Emblem Engage’s Intro is So Lovably Cheesy

Image: Nintendo/Intelligent Systems

If you watch anime, you’re used to intros that alternate between being deeply emotional and serious or cheesy and silly as all hell. Sometimes it’s neither of those and is purely running off of good vibes. (Usually this is after the show in question hits a new arc.) Video games don’t always get flashy intros, and it’s a shame that’s the case. Because after watching the intro for Fire Emblem Engage, that kind of cheese is something games could stand to have more of.

Fire Emblem Engage is set to release in about two weeks, and along with impressions of the strategy-RPG, the game’s intro cinematic was released. A lot of the intro’s cheesiness is clearly owed to its song, which sounds like it was made in the 90s and then held in stasis for three decades. It’s so anime that you half expect it to end with an ad for Crunchyroll. The visuals try to hit that same cheese with colorful streaks of light corresponding with the toothpaste-colored protagonist Alear and their companions Alfred, Timerra, Ivy, and Diamant and footage of their in-game models showing off their special abilities. Maybe it’s not as strong an intro as the one for 2019’s Fire Emblem: Three Houses, but Engage’s opening is fun all its own.

Fire Emblem Engage – FULL Opening [English] + Title Screen

The big selling point of Engage is that Alear and their group can use special rings to summon main characters from previous Fire Emblem entries such as Marth from 1990’s Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light or Byleth from Three Houses. That alone sounds anime as hell (image the hands of the previous heroes lifting up Alear during a key moment!), and hopefully the game is able to match the energy its opening puts off. Games like these tend to be long, so an intro should hopefully get you in the mood to defeat evil empires each time you boot it up.

Fire Emblem Engage releases for the Nintendo Switch on January 20.

Diabetes on track to increase 700% in young Americans

The number of young Americans with Type 2 diabetes is projected to skyrocket nearly 700% by 2060 if current upward trends continue unchecked, according to a “startling” new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National Institutes of Health.

Meanwhile, a spike of up to 65% in young people with Type 1 diabetes is likely, according to the new study published in the American Diabetes Association’s medical journal.

“This new research should serve as a wake-up call for all of us,” Dr. Debra Houry, acting principal deputy director of the CDC, said in a statement. “It’s vital that we focus our efforts to ensure all Americans, especially our young people, are the healthiest they can be.”

More than 37 million Americans — about 1 in 10 — already have incurable diabetes, making it the seventh leading cause of death in the nation. The average medical expenses for those living with it can tap out at $16,752 a year, according to the most recent ADA data.

Type 1 diabetes — in which the pancreas produces little to no insulin — is more common in people under the age 20 in the US. However, Type 2 diabetes — when the body can’t process insulin the way it needs to — has “substantially increased” in this demographic over the past two decades, the research team reported.

In addition to the overall “surge” projections, analyzing the data by race and ethnicity predicted a “higher burden” of Type 2 diabetes for “Black, Hispanic/Latino, Asian, Pacific Islander and American Indian/Alaska Native youths.”

Researchers said the “alarming” growth rate could be sparked by multiple factors — ranging from gestational diabetes in women of childbearing age (as their babies are more likely to develop the disease) and the deeply ingrained prevalence of childhood obesity in US culture.

“This study’s startling projections of Type 2 diabetes increases show why it is crucial to advance health equity and reduce the widespread disparities that already take a toll on people’s health,” said Christopher Holliday, director of the CDC’s Division of Diabetes Translation.

The most common diabetes health complications include heart disease, chronic kidney disease, nerve damage — and myriad other maladies associated with feet, oral, vision, hearing and mental health.

Meanwhile, the disease may intensify at a more rapid rate in young people than in adults, requiring earlier medical treatment, researchers noted.

“The COVID-19 pandemic underscored how critically important it is to address chronic diseases, like diabetes,” Houry added. “This study further highlights the importance of continuing efforts to prevent and manage chronic diseases, not only for our current population but also for generations to come.”

‘9-1-1’ and ‘The Rookie’ actor Tyler Sanders’ cause of death revealed

After months of speculation, an autopsy has revealed the cause of death for “9-1-1: Lone Star” and “The Rookie” star Tyler Sanders, who was discovered dead in his Los Angeles home in June.

According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, the 18-year-old “Fear The Walking Dead” actor died from the effects of fentanyl in what authorities have declared an accident, TMZ reported.

The coroner noted Sanders had sent a text message to his friend the night before he died, telling them that he was using the narcotic. However, the former child star didn’t respond to messages after his initial text.

Authorities also discovered a straw and white powder in the room where he died, per the report.

And while Sanders didn’t have any known medical problems, he reportedly had a history of abusing various substances, including including heroin, cocaine, LSD, mushrooms and Xanax, the outlet reported.

Sanders’ flaunted a stylish blue suit in his last Instagram post before he died.

The report comes after the Californian was was found dead at his Los Angeles home, where he lived alone, on June 16. Police responded to a call about a male who was found not breathing, whereupon they discovered the teen alone and pronounced him dead shortly thereafter.

At the time, Sanders’ cause of death was listed as “deferred,” meaning the medical examiner is “requesting more investigation into the death, including additional studies. Once the tests/studies come back, the doctor evaluates the case again and makes the cause of death determination.”

Sanders entered show business at age 10.

Sanders, who entered showbiz at age 10, is perhaps known for starring in “9-1-1: Lone Star” opposite Rob Lowe. He also appeared “The Rookie,” “Fear the Walking Dead” and the Amazon Prime series “Just Add Magic: Mystery City.”

Also a student of stand-up comedy and improv, the rising star earned a 2021 Daytime Emmy nomination for his role as Leo in the “Just Add Magic” spin-off, and has a pair of independent films currently in postproduction, per to his IMDb.com profile.

Sanders was also active on social media, boasting an Instagram page with over 12,000 followers, where frequently shared photos of himself with his co-stars, friends and other nature-filled adventures.

At the time of his death, Sanders boasted over 12,000 Instagram followers.

In his last post before his death, the young talent posted a snap of himself sporting a sharp blue suit in glasses while visiting Vail, Colorado. The post was captioned: “Styling.”

The tragic news comes less than two weeks after authorities revealed that deceased TikTok star Cooper Noriega, who was also found dead in June in Los Angeles, had died of “combined effects of alprazolam, fentanyl and lorazepam.”

Meanwhile, fentanyl seizures at the US border with Mexico have continued to surge in 2022, with multiple busts setting different records throughout the year.

“A decade ago, we didn’t even know about fentanyl, and now it’s a national crisis,” U.S. Attorney Randy Grossman said in a press release in August. “The amount of fentanyl we are seizing at the border is staggering.”

Grossman’s comments came as the Justice Department revealed that ports of entry in San Diego and Imperial counties in Southern California were at the center of a surge in fentanyl seizures at the border, accounting for roughly 60% of seizures of the deadly drug in 2022.

However, that rise has been seen at ports across the border, with law enforcement agencies on both the Mexican and American sides making record-setting busts in 2022. Here are just a few of the border fentanyl busts that made headlines in 2022.

High On Life Players Are Getting Perma-Trapped In Applebee’s

Screenshot: Squanch Games

Have you ever found yourself paying for over-salted food and overpriced drinks at an Applebee’s and thought: “What if I just stayed here…forever?” Well, a bug making the rounds in the Rick and Morty-adjacent shooter High On Life is allowing such a macabre fantasy to come true.

Released earlier this month on Xbox and PC, High On Life is a shooter steeped in the wacky comedic stylings of Rick and Morty. Developed by Squanch Games, a studio founded by Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland himself, the game is about as loud and obnoxious as you’d expect. Despite obnoxiously bright colors and talking guns capable of delivering a headache or two, the game has soared to the top of Game Pass’s most-played titles. Recently, players have been finding themselves trapped in the game’s rendition of well-known American chain restaurant Applebee’s. It’s a bug for sure, but one that feels fittingly on-point for such an absurd and silly game.

“TRAPPED IN SPACE APPLEBEE’S!!” starts one Reddit thread on High On Life’s subreddit. “Hey guy’s, I love Applebee’s. Like fucking LOVE it. I thought Space Applebee’s would be better (AND IT IS!!) but I am stuck inside. This is my checkpoint, trapped inside with the 2 for $25 for all eternity. Anyone know a way out?? Plz help,” the post continues.

Searching “Applebee’s stuck” or “Applebee’s trapped High On Life” on either High On Life’s subreddit, or Twitter, yields similar pleas for help. A few have even captured some footage to share the struggle.

Others who have managed to escape are finding themselves teleported back into the Applebee’s. “Before going home I saved a human outside of the Applebee’s, I got teleported by accident to the sanctuary then I was teleported back where I was, got killed almost instantly and now I’m stuck in the Applebee’s because the door won’t open.”

In addition to asking Squanch Games for comment, Kotaku has reached out to Applebee’s to find out what one should do if you find yourself in a similar situation.
