Harry Styles performs at Coachella and surprises fan with Shania Twain cameo

Danny Elfman brings Spider-Man, Batman and The Simpsons to Coachella – review

And now, time for something completely different: composer Danny Elfman is by some margin the oldest artist performing at this year’s youth-focused Coachella. But on the basis of his eclectic show on the Outdoor Theatre stage late on Saturday night (16 April), his age is the least unusual thing about him.

For a start, there can be few 68-year-old composers around who would choose to perform topless so as best to show off a heavily-tattooed torso. More pertinently, there are few composers of any age who could make a full orchestra sound like a garage punk band, as Elfman often does throughout his hour-long set.

“Hello Coachella,” he says, not long after playing deranged 2021 single “Insects” and then a section of his orchestral score from 2002’s Spider-Man. “My name’s Danny Elfman, and I’ve got a strange little show for you.” He’s not kidding.

The show draws from all areas of Elfman’s long career – including material from his former band Oingo Boingo, as well as a decent selection from his new record Big Mess, an album he says showcases “the two sides of me that are always fighting for space.”

The most crowd-pleasing moments, however, arrive with selections from Elfman’s long and varied career composing for film and television. There are songs from Edward Scissorhands, Batman and Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, The crowd applauds appreciatively when he changes the last line of “This is Halloween”, from The Nightmare Before Christmas, to: “What is this… Coachella town?”

‘My name’s Danny Elfman, and I’ve got a strange little show for you,’ the 68-year-old composer says at Coachella. He’s not kidding.

They’re even more thrilled when he plays undoubtedly the most famous piece of music he’s ever composed, the theme to The Simpsons, which he augments with a squalling guitar solo. Lisa would be proud of his virtuosity.

He closes with solo track “Happy”, complete with his own demented face 3D rendered on the big screen, and the urgent existential punk of Oingo Boingo’s “Who Do You Want To Be?”, with lyrics updated to reference the Kardashians and Kanye West.

Elfman’s booking was undoubtedly a gamble, but it’s one that pays off many times over. He’s an artist with an impressive, varied and well-known back catalogue, but one who’s a long way from typical festival heritage act.

This is a four-star set that delivers multiple sides of Danny Elfman while giving Coachella the best of both worlds.

Coachella bids rowdy farewell to innovative boy band Brockhampton – review

After almost a decade of boundary shifting and rule breaking, the most innovative boy band of the 21st century have decided to call it a day.

Taking over the huge aircraft hangar that is the Sahara stage at Coachella music festival on Saturday (16 April), sprawling Texan collective Brockhampton have decided to hang up their bucket hats for good. Well, at least that was what fans were told in January of this year, when they revealed via social media that they would be taking an “indefinite hiatus” following Coachella, while thanking fans for their support over the past eight years.

However, after tonight’s hour-long spectacular, video screens reveal that they’re not quite done yet. When the band leave the stage, a pre-recorded clip of de facto frontman Kevin Abstract talking to his bandmates flashes up. He has something to tell them he says. The screens then go dark, leaving nothing but the words: “Brockhampton. The Final Album. 2022.” If the crowd hadn’t been going bonkers enough during the set, this is enough to make them totally lose it.

Disclosure joined by Khalid and brass band during high-energy rave set

Last time Surrey-born brothers Howard and Guy Lawrence played Coachella, back in 2016, they augmented their live show with a number of high-profile guest vocalists including Lorde (for “Magnets”), Sam Smith (for “Latch” and “Omen”) and AlunaGeorge (for “White Noise”).

By those high standards, tonight’s performance was relatively light on surprises – bar the appearance of Khalid late on for the first ever live performance of their 2020 collaboration “Know Your Worth”. Perhaps that’s a sign that the Lawrence brothers are now more confident in their own ability to hold the Coachella audience captive with minimal bells and whistles.

Now over a decade into a career they began as minors, the pair have become practiced experts at delivering a high-energy rave by this point. The Coachella crowd is more than willing to meet them half way, and they’re out in force for the duo’s sunset set, a euphoric, hands-in-the-air performance. “We want to see maximum energy, maximum vibes tonight,” announce the brothers. It’s fair to say their wish is granted.

“When a Fire Starts to Burn” has the whole crowd moving in unison, while phone lights flash on to illuminate “Nocturnal”. Despite playing the festival yesterday, there’s no sign of Slowthai aside from in pre-recorded form on the big screens for Grammy-nominated banger “My High”.

The duo close their set with party anthem “Tondo”, joined on stage by a brass band horn section, but the focus never really leaves the siblings at centre stage during the sort of uplifting performance the Coachella stage was made for.

Jackson Wang’s surprise appearance is all Twitter can talk about

While Disclosure are busy bringing in one of the biggest crowds of the weekend over on the Outdoor Theatre, 88rising are doing their own equally impressive thing on the main Coachella stage.

The first ever record label to be given their own showcase at the festival, the collective doesn’t take this honour lightly.

Since 2015, 88rising have been working with artists and creators from across Asia and, tonight, the LA-based company brings in the big boys and girls for an 80 minute extravaganza with an epic list of names as well as a troupe of dancers and multi-layered stage.

A mini version of 88rising’s own hugely successful Head in the Clouds festival, it’s the perfect potted variety show – with spots from Thai rapper Milli, South Korean singer songwriter Bibi and Jakarta-born Taylor Swift co-signed singer Niki as well as Indonesian rappers Rich Brian and Warren Hue.

It is the unannounced appearance of Chinese superstar Jackson Wang however, that really makes the festival lose its collective mind.

With his silver blue hair and red gloves on majestic display, the flashy Wang slinks his way through ten minutes of Michael Jackson inspired choreography with Las Vegas magician worthy flair, leaving a whole lot of fans more than happy for his arrival, but also wondering why he wasn’t on stage for an hour longer at least.

Fans react to Wang’s ‘festival devouring’ Coachella performance here.

Coachella weather report

Where yesterday was too hot, today is decidedly too windy. Dust storms surround the site making visibility a challenge for many driving to the festival. On the ground, this means bucket hats blowing all over the place, bins tumbling across the fields and a lot of hairdos becoming hair don’ts. The solution? Hold onto your hats, Coachella.

What Fresh Hell Is This? WaPo’s Headline About Pregnancy and COVID Breakthrough Infections Is a Hot Mess

It’s not like we didn’t see this coming. The Left has fallen for the science fiction concerning gender and defining women. They’ve fallen for the science fiction relating to the coronavirus, like mask-wearing being 100 percent effective and the vaccine preventing transmission. It’s only fitting that the two have now formed an amalgam of nonsense on the issue of pregnancy and COVID. Did you see The Washington Post headline about pregnancy and breakthrough cases? Can you guess which word was erased when discussing pregnancy? Better yet, who can only get pregnant and carry a child in this world? Is it a man? No. It is a woman? Yes, but you’d never know because the liberal paper decided to go with “pregnant people” to adhere to the woke mob’s standards of science fiction and political correctness. What fresh hell is this? This is an article about a scientific study, and The Washington Post uses a fake lefty lexicon that erases biological facts to avoid upsetting people. Remember, words are violence, right? Why is the media mocked and not believed? Well, here’s your purest example; an article about a scientific study that’s written through the lens of science fiction (via WaPo) [emphasis mine:

Pregnant people who are vaccinated against the coronavirus are nearly twice as likely to get covid-19 as those who are not pregnant, according to a new study that offers the broadest evidence to date of the odds of infections among vaccinated patients with different medical circumstances.

The analysis, based on medical records of nearly 14 million U.S. patients since coronavirus immunization became available, found that pregnant people who are vaccinated have the greatest risk of developing covid among a dozen medical states, including being an organ transplant recipient and having cancer.

The findings come on top of research showing that people who are pregnant or gave birth recently and became infected are especially prone to getting seriously ill from covid-19. And covid has been found to increase the risk of pregnancy complications, such as premature births.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been urging people to get coronavirus shots before or during pregnancy, seeking to dispel fear — widespread in some communities, without scientific basis — that those vaccinations could be harmful. As of March, nearly 70 percent of people who were pregnant have been vaccinated before or during their pregnancy, according to federal data, though disparities persist among racial and ethnic groups.

The word ‘woman’ is mentioned only once—and it’s not in the context that women are the only ones who can get pregnant. Men cannot carry babies. Enough. The destruction of words is essential to ending debate and enacting an authoritarian ethos on the populace. George Orwell knew this—the Left knows this as well. Oh, and breastfeeding is now problematic. It’s chest feeders. Old news, but a booster shot in reminding all of us that we’re dealing with the mentally ill.

Cam Whitmore, Dariq Whitehead headline East’s win over West in McDonald’s All American boys’ high school basketball game

CHICAGO — Dariq Whitehead showed why he’s headed to Duke and set to become part of the first freshman class since 1979 not to play under retiring Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski.

Cam Whitmore, meanwhile, put on a performance that should please Villanova coach Jay Wright.

Future Wildcat Whitmore scored 19 points, Whitehead took McDonald’s All American Game MVP honors, and the East beat the West 105-81 at Wintrust Arena on Tuesday night.

The showcase event that has shined a light on greats including Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal and LeBron James made its return after being canceled the past two years because of the coronavirus pandemic. The current crop showed why they are the best high school players in the country, whether they were throwing down vicious dunks or making acrobatic layups.

Whitmore had eight rebounds. Whitehead wanted to show fans he is an all-around player and did just that with 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists to help the East roll to an easy win.

“Coming into it the game, I didn’t think of it so much as me getting stats,” he said. “I just wanted to win the game, most importantly. That’s something we emphasized.”

Duke-bound Mark Mitchell led the West with 19 points.

“Not having the games the last two years, I think it was just an honor that they could put on the games this year,” he said. “We had to go through a lot of protocols. It was definitely all worth it in the end.”

Former NBA star Jermaine O’Neal sat courtside and Chicago rapper G Herbo was four chairs to his left. Lil Baby performed at halftime. The East had already put on quite a show by then, racing out to a 58-38 lead.

Whitehead nailed three 3s and had 11 points to go with five assists in the half. Whitmore scored nine points, and the 6-foot-7 guard from Archbishop Spalding near Baltimore punctuated it with a windmill dunk in the closing seconds that drew the loudest roar from the crowd until Lil Baby took the floor.

“When I first got on the big stage, playing in front of thousands of people, it was a little nerve-racking,” Whitehead said. “I wasn’t used to playing in front of tons of people. When I got used to it, it became something that you looked forward to. It also makes you go out and perform better, just knowing that you’ve got people paying to come watch you play.”

Anthony Black, who announced his commitment to Arkansas on Monday night on ESPN, giving Eric Musselman and the Razorbacks their third five-star prospect in the 2022 class, was on the West roster.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.

EVO 2022 Lineup Announced: Street Fighter V, Tekken 7 Headline This Year’s Event

EVO has unveiled the lineup of games coming to the popular fighting game tournament this August. EVO staples such as Street Fighter V and Tekken 7 will return as expected, but some titles will also feature for the first time.

The full lineup is as follows:

  • Street Fighter V: Champion Edition – PS4 (Capcom)
  • Guilty Gear -Strive- PS4 (Arc System Works)
  • Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate – PS4 (Warner Bros. Games)
  • TEKKEN 7 – PS4 (Bandai Namco Entertainment)
  • THE KING OF FIGHTERS XV – PS4 (SNK)
  • MELTY BLOOD: TYPE LUMINA – PS4 (Project Lumina)
  • DRAGON BALL FighterZ – PS4 (Bandai Namco Entertainment)
  • Granblue Fantasy: Versus – PS4 (Cygames and XSEED)
  • Skullgirls: 2nd Encore – PS4 (Autumn Games)

General manager Rick Thiher said: “We are thrilled to present a slate of fighting games representing so many of the genre’s player-bases for EVO 2022. There is nothing like the global fighting game community’s energy when we gather for EVO, and I’m greatly looking forward to seeing what happens when we start the event series’ next chapter together later this year.”

EVO returns after last year’s event was canceled due to complications caused by COVID-19. Founded by Tom Cannon, it is one of the world’s most popular fighting game events, its roots being in the tournaments hosted in Northern California in the mid-90s.

Super Smash Bros. is conspicuously absent from this year’s lineup. Nintendo made the decision last month to not have any iteration of the franchise at EVO 2022, possibly as a result of Sony purchasing the tournament in 2021.

Fans and players alike can otherwise attend EVO 2022 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas from August 5 to 7.

Tim Allen To Headline ‘The Santa Clause’ Sequel Series For Disney+ – Deadline

Tim Allen is returning to Disney — and to the North Pole. The actor-comedian is set to star in and executive-produce The Santa Clause (working title), a Disney+ original limited series, in which he will reprise his role as Scott Calvin from the hit Walt Disney Pictures holiday franchise.

On the series, Allen is reuniting with Jack Burditt, creator of Allen’s hit sitcom Last Man Standing, who will serve as executive producer and showrunner on The Last Clause. Last Man Standing writer-executive producer Kevin Hench will executive produce the new series, alongside Allen’s managers, Richard Baker and Rick Messina who also had EP credits on LMS.

In Disney Branded Television’s The Santa Clause series, produced by 20th Television, Scott Calvin (Allen) is on the brink of his 65th birthday and realizing that he can’t be Santa forever. He’s starting to lose a step in his Santa duties, and more importantly, he’s got a family who could benefit from a life in the normal world, especially his two kids who have grown up at the Pole. With a lot of elves, children, and family to please, Scott sets out to find a suitable replacement Santa while preparing his family for a new adventure in a life south of the pole.

Production on the series is set to begin in March in Los Angeles.

Classic holiday movie franchises from the Disney library are being mined for Disney+; this past holiday season, the streamer premiered a new Home Alone film.

Allen won a People’s Choice Award for his portrayal of Scott Calvin, Santa Claus’s proxy, complete with expanding waistline, rosy cheeks and snow-white whiskers in the 1994 film The Santa Clause. He went on to play the role in two sequels, 2002’s The Santa Clause 2 and 2006’s The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause. (You can watch a trailer for the third movie below.) Allen reunited with the creative team from The Santa Clause to make Disney’s Jungle 2 Jungle, and also starred in Disney’s remake of The Shaggy Dog in 2006.

Additionally, Allen voices one of the most popular Disney animated characters, Buzz Lightyear, in Pixar’s Toy Story franchise.

On the TV side at Disney, the comedian headlined one of ABC’s signature comedy series, Home Improvement. Allen also starred for nine seasons on Last Man Standing, which started on ABC before moving to Fox and was produced by 20th Television.

Kanye West to Headline Coachella 2022, Considering Sunday Service – Billboard

Kanye West — who now goes by Ye — has been tapped to headline Sunday night at this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and might also stage a second Sunday Service performance a source tells Billboard. Billie Eilish is also in talks to headline the event — likely Friday — sources confirms.

The headliner news comes after a chaotic 48 hours for festival organizer Goldenvoice as it moves artists in and out of the event’s three headliner slots, originally set for the 2020 iteration that was postponed several times during the pandemic. Billboard has confirmed that previous headliners Travis Scott and Rage Against the Machine will no longer headline the 2022 edition of the festival after originally being tapped for the 2020 show. Scott was effectively dropped from the lineup following the tragic death of 10 attendees at his Astroworld festival in Houston on Nov. 5.

Goldenvoice is also considering moving Swedish House Mafia out of the headliner slot, Billboard has learned, as organizers evaluate all of their options for the two weekend festival, April 15-17 and April 22-24 at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, Calif.

Both Ye and Eilish’s agreements still have to be finalized, and while a Sunday Service-style performance is still being considered, a return of the church-like event after it first debuted at the festival in 2019 has generated significant buzz.

Ye previously headlined the 2011 edition of Coachella, while Eilish performed at the festival in 2019 — the last year the festival was held. Swedish House Mafia performed in 2012.

TMZ and Variety first reported the news of Billie and Ye’s bookings, respectively.

The 2020 edition – which Rage Against the Machine, Scott and Frank Ocean were slated to headline – was moved to October 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic before being scrapped altogether; the 2021 festival was also canceled. In August, it was revealed that Ocean would instead headline the festival in 2023, leaving the third headliner slot open.

While Ye and Eilish are certainly big gets for the festival, some observers are now questioning the viability of Coachella’s April dates — which were set last June — amid skyrocketing coronavirus infections due to the highly-contagious omicron variant. Earlier Wednesday (Jan. 5), the Recording Academy postponed its 2022 Grammys ceremony, which had been slated for Jan. 31. Sources tell Billboard it may now be held sometime in the spring.
