One area holding up to the challenges has been travel. Several airline companies have reported that consumers still have an appetite to spend on trips and vacations. On Friday,

American Express Co.

Joni Mitchell to play first headline concert in 23 years | Music

Joni Mitchell is set to perform at her first headline concert in 23 years.

The singer will take the stage at Washington’s Gorge Amphitheatre on 10 June 2023, news that was initially revealed by Brandi Carlile on The Daily Show before official confirmation later. Carlile will also perform a headline set at the same venue, the night before. She called it “one of the most beautiful venues in the world”.

The two-night event is called Echoes through the Canyon and is known as Joni Jam II. The first official Joni Jam took place when the singer made an unannounced appearance as part of the Newport folk festival alongside Carlile, who claimed that Mitchell said to her “I want to do another show … I want to play again” after it ended. Other Joni Jams have been sessions at Mitchell’s house.

“Joni Mitchell is going to play,” Carlile told Trevor Noah. “No one’s been able to buy a ticket to see Joni Mitchell play in 20 years … So this is enormous … and she is going to crush it!”

Mitchell’s last official headline shows were part of 2000’s Both Sides Now tour.

In 2015, Mitchell suffered a brain aneurysm which affected her ability to speak and walk. “I got my speech back quickly, but the walking I’m still struggling with,” she said to Cameron Crowe in 2020. “But I mean, I’m a fighter. I’ve got Irish blood!” After accepting her Kennedy Center Honor in 2021, she added: “I’ve had to come back several times from things. And this last one was a real whopper. But, you know, I’m hobbling along but I’m doing all right!”

She also attended the Grammy awards in April. She was named person of the year by the academy’s affiliated charity MusiCares and won best historical album for her retrospective, Joni Mitchell Archives, Vol 1: The Early Years (1963-1967).

Earlier this year, Mitchell joined Neil Young in protesting Spotify over anti-vax content, asking the platform to remove her albums. “Irresponsible people are spreading lies that are costing people their lives,” she said in a statement.

This comes after it was revealed that the rapper  had steered clear of drugs and excess drinking in the years leading up to his death despite struggling with substance abuse in the past, according to a close friend.

The rap artist’s history of drug abuse and crack cocaine addiction led some fans to speculate he died of a drug overdose, after being found on his friend’s bathroom floor in downtown LA.

But his manager said the cause appeared to be a heart attack, and a close friend also testified to Coolio’s sobriety in recent years.

Coolio had a history of drug abuse and crack cocaine addiction but was sober in the years leading up to his death, a friend of the rapper told DailyMail.com

Coolio’s close friend Eric Yano (pictured) said never saw him drink or take any drugs in the 18 years he knew him, his manager also said his cause of death appeared to be a heart attack

Eric Yano, a Vegas-based friend of the late rapper who has known him for 18 years told DailyMail.com in an exclusive interview that despite Coolio’s struggles with drugs in the past, he had never seen him drink, smoke or take any substances during their two-decade friendship.

‘He would never show up intoxicated or on a different planet like most people. I never saw him drinking. He’d usually have a glass of water,’ Yano said.

‘A lot of people would ask to smoke a joint with him but he never smoked.

‘When the news came yesterday about his passing, I was shocked. Was it something health related?

‘But I was just with him a few weeks ago, and he seemed completely fine. No mention of any sort of heart condition or any medical condition.’

Yano, 45, who runs VIP events at MGM hotels and casinos in Vegas, said he first met Coolio around 2004 on the Strip looking for a cab, gave him a ride home and became firm friends from then on.

The nightlife rep and the rapper had launched a new business, Send Me To Vegas, which involved guests paying for a party bus tour of the Strip accompanied by Coolio, entertaining his guests and singing his hit songs on the ride.

Despite his stellar success with multi-platinum records and his biggest hit, Gangsta’s Paradise, reaching a billion YouTube views in July this year, Coolio was not a rich man, his friend revealed.

Coolio, best known for his 1995 hit Gangsta’s Paradise, was not a rich man at the time of his death, despite his stellar success with his biggest hit and other multi-platinum records

Eric Yano shared videos of him and Coolio hanging out in Las Vegas prior to his death

Documents from a 2010 child support case filed by his ex Anabella Chatman show he was making just $1,387 per month.

Yano told DailyMail.com Coolio loved performing and was less focused on making money.

‘What mattered to Coolio was entertaining people, whether that was up on stage or just in conversation at dinner,’ he said.

Coolio fathered at least 11 children. Four were with his first wife, LA city official and radio personality Josefa Salinas, and at least two were with his current long-term partner, model Mimi Ivey, and others with several girlfriends.

At the time of his death, he was living in Las Vegas, but had traveled to Los Angeles to correct an issue he was having with his passport.

The rapper had shows scheduled in Germany this weekend and so was in need of proper documentation.

Coolio’s manager, Jarez, said he was preparing to join the rapper when he received a call about the collapse in the bathroom.

The manager subsequently said he was told Coolio died of a heart attack, though that has not yet been confirmed.

Police did not discover drugs or drug paraphernalia in the bathroom.

Fan Mika Janday shared a photo posing with Coolio, who appeared happy, healthy, and engaging just days before his unexpected death at age 59

Passing: EMTs pronounced Coolio dead on the scene and an autopsy is now underway to establish the official cause of death – though law enforcement sources shared that ‘no drugs or drug paraphernalia were found at the scene’

Gone too soon: The musician – famous for his hit song Gangsta’s Paradise – was visiting a friend on Wednesday afternoon when he was found dead (Pictured 10 days ago)

Devastated fans have since highlighted the singer’s lifelong asthma as a possible cause of death.

He was regularly seen puffing on an inhaler at gigs, although his friend and longtime manager, Jarez, claims he died of a heart attack

On the day of his death, Coolio had reportedly gone to the bathroom at a friend’s house, but did not emerge for a long time.

That prompted the friend to investigate. Coolio was laying on the bathroom floor unresponsive when he was found.

The friend called emergency services and EMTs quickly responded but found no signs of life.

A cause of death has not yet been confirmed by a medical examiner.

Rihanna to headline Super Bowl LVII halftime show

Rihanna, who said in 2019 that she turned down the chance to perform in the Super Bowl halftime show because of how Colin Kaepernick had been treated, will headline the Super Bowl LVII halftime show in February, the NFL announced Sunday.

After rumors that talks to sign the singer were progressing, Rihanna made the announcement on Instagram with a simple image of her hand holding an NFL football against a stark white background. Shortly afterward, the NFL made it official in an announcement along with Apple Music and Roc Nation, the entertainment company founded by Jay-Z.

The Super Bowl will be held Feb. 12, 2023, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.

Rihanna confirmed to Vogue in 2019 she had turned down the chance to appear on the global stage offered by the game.

“Absolutely,” she said. “I couldn’t dare do that. For what? Who gains from that? Not my people. I just couldn’t be a sellout. I couldn’t be an enabler. There’s things within that organization that I do not agree with at all, and I was not about to go and be of service to them in any way.”

Cardi B also turned down the offer and Maroon 5 instead headlined the show, to meh reviews.

Rihanna was also critical of President Donald Trump, who ripped the league for not disciplining players such as Kaepernick who took a knee during the national anthem to protest social injustice and police brutality. Since then, spurred largely by the killing of George Floyd, among other incidents, the NFL has evolved, with Commissioner Roger Goodell saying in August 2020, “I wish we had listened earlier” to the gesture by Kaepernick and others.

Jay-Z praised Rihanna in the NFL’s announcement as “a generational talent, a woman of humble beginnings who has surpassed expectations at every turn. A person born on the small island of Barbados who became one of the most prominent artists ever. Self-made in business and entertainment.”

Roc Nation, which entered into a long-term relationship with the NFL in 2019 to advise it on shows, will be strategic entertainment adviser for her performance. Although she has not released an album since 2016, she has intimated new work is coming.

“We are thrilled to welcome Rihanna to the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show stage,” Seth Dudowsky, the NFL’s head of music said in the announcement. “Rihanna is a once in a generation artist who has been a cultural force throughout her career. We look forward to collaborating with Rihanna, Roc Nation and Apple Music to bring fans another historic Halftime Show performance.”

Apple’s Oliver Schusser echoed that. “Rihanna is an incredible recording artist who is a favorite for many millions of Apple Music customers around the world. We’re excited to partner with Rihanna, Roc Nation and the NFL to bring music and sports fans a momentous show — what an incredible artist for the inaugural Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show.”

The February 2022 Super Bowl show featured a lineup of musicians including Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar.

Rihanna to Headline Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show

Rihanna has slyly confirmed that she will be performing at the Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show in Feb. 2023. Roc Nation also reaffirmed the singer’s participation through a statement released on Sunday.

The singer shared a picture of an NFL-branded football on her Instagram on Sunday. The post came amid reports that the singer was “in talks” to headline the Super Bowl Halftime Show.

The game, which typically draws one of the biggest single TV audiences of the year, is scheduled to be played at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. on Feb. 12.

“Rihanna is a generational talent, a woman of humble beginnings who has surpassed expectations at every turn,” said Jay-Z in the official announcement. “A person born on the small island of Barbados who became one of the most prominent artists ever. Self-made in business and entertainment.”

Although having Rihanna as the halftime headliner is a logical conclusion on the Roc Nation front, the singer has not released an album since 2016. She has commented vaguely about two different albums in the years since (and been photographed coming in and out of recording studios), with one being described as a dancehall album. However, details are scarce.

Regardless, the announcement was surely enough to rile up fans of the R&B singer, who hope her appearance means a new album is finally on the way. Rihanna was also offered to headline the 2019 Halftime show but turned down the offer in a decision to show solidarity with Colin Kaepernick.

Added Seth Dudowsky, NFL’s head of music: “We are thrilled to welcome Rihanna to the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show stage. Rihanna is a once-in-a-generation artist who has been a cultural force throughout her career. We look forward to collaborating with Rihanna, Roc Nation and Apple Music to bring fans another historic Halftime Show performance.”

The Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show will be telecast and produced by DPS with Roc Nation and Jesse Collins serving as executive producers, and Hamish Hamilton serving as director. Roc Nation is also serving as the strategic entertainment advisors of the live performance.

“Rihanna is an incredible recording artist who is a favorite for many millions of Apple Music customers around the world,” said Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of Apple Music and Beats. “We’re excited to partner with Rihanna, Roc Nation and the NFL to bring music and sports fans a momentous show — what an incredible artist for the inaugural Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show.”

This is the first year that Apple Music will serve as a sponsor for the halftime show, replacing the NFL’s longtime partner Pepsi. The NFL announced the move last week at midnight, which had fans hypothesizing that Taylor Swift would be a potential headliner due to Swift’s connection to the hour (Her forthcoming album is called “Midnights”). That was later disproved by sources close to Swift who spoke to both People and TMZ and alleged that although she had been approached by the NFL in the past, the pop phenom had turned down the offer.

In May, Pepsi officially renounced its title as a halftime show sponsor, choosing to walk away from a decade-long association that transformed the event from a lineup of primarily rock musicians like Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in favor of a new group of artists aiming at the younger generations that advertisers and the NFL seek to court. The NFL was said to be seeking significantly higher annual payments for the sponsorship rights and according to a press release issued by the league, their contract with the software company is a multi-year deal.

Apple has in recent months shown a greater interest in sports. Its streaming platform has started new deals with Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer to show games to subscribers. Sports rights have long been the province of traditional media companies like Fox, Disney, Paramount Global and NBCUniversal, but technology companies like Apple and Amazon have made a bigger play for those rights as they seek to bring in consumers to their broadband subscription-video services. Amazon, for its part, is now a major NFL partner thanks to its control of rights to “Thursday Night Football.”

Earlier this year, the Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show assembled a star-studded crew of artists including Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar. The performance achieved five Creative Arts Emmy nominations and won three Creative Arts Emmys, including Outstanding Variety Special (Live), a first-ever for the show.

Past Super Bowl Halftime Show performances include the Weeknd, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Prince, Madonna and more.

Apple Music will be offering sneak peeks of its Halftime ideas via its social handle, @AppleMusic, on TikTok, Instagram and Twitter.

Brady-Rodgers, Bills-Dolphins, Ravens-Pats headline NFL Week 3

Tua Tagovailoa and Lamar Jackson staged an entertaining quarterbacking duel last week in Baltimore, as Tagovailoa’s Miami Dolphins rallied from a 21-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Jackson’s Ravens.

Both of those quarterbacks and their teams are right back in the spotlight Sunday, participating in highly intriguing Week 3 matchups. The Dolphins host the Buffalo Bills in an AFC East meeting between 2-0 teams. The Ravens face the New England Patriots in Foxborough, Mass., with the loser of that game falling into an early-season predicament at 1-2.

The third Sunday of the NFL’s regular season also will bring a clash of legendary quarterbacks, with Tom Brady vs. Aaron Rodgers playing a late-afternoon game in Tampa.

NFL reset: Team rankings, Tom Brady plays on, Justin Herbert’s injury

The Bills-Dolphins and Ravens-Patriots games are part of the early-afternoon slate. The Bills have lived up to their reputation thus far as the league’s Super Bowl favorite. They’ve beaten the Los Angeles Rams, the defending Super Bowl champs, and the Tennessee Titans, last season’s No. 1 AFC playoff seed, by a combined margin of 72-17.

Now they must go on the road to play a warm-weather game on a short workweek against a promising Dolphins team with a revved-up passing game. Tagovailoa threw for 469 yards and six touchdowns in last Sunday’s 42-38 triumph over the Ravens.

“We were executing on all cylinders offensively,” Tagovailoa said after that game. “And then when there were times where we didn’t execute, no one panicked. Everyone just came back into the huddle and we regrouped.”

Tua Tagovailoa is suddenly thriving, and the Dolphins are relevant again

The Dolphins overcame deficits of 28-7 at halftime and 35-14 in the fourth quarter. They scored 28 points in the game’s final 13 minutes, and Coach Mike McDaniel began his postgame news conference by asking, “Is anyone else tired?”

The Ravens renew their sometimes-spirited rivalry with the Patriots as they try to get back into the win column. Jackson is coming off a brilliant performance against the Dolphins. He became the first quarterback in NFL history to have a touchdown pass and a touchdown run of at least 75 yards each in the same game.

“There are challenges every week,” Patriots Coach Bill Belichick said at midweek. “But certainly the Ravens have a lot of them with the quarterback, his passing game, the running game, his ability to make elusive extended plays, the explosiveness of their receivers and tight ends and him.”

The post-Tom Brady Patriots are still figuring out who they are

Belichick even drew chuckles when he was asked whether Jackson has answered the questions about his pocket-passing abilities that he faced entering the NFL.

“Without a doubt,” Belichick said. “He’s the type of player that’s an MVP type of candidate. I think he’s more than answered it. Wait and see what his contract is. That’ll answer it.”

Brady and Rodgers will square off for the fifth time in their highly decorated careers. Brady has won three of the four meetings to date.

Brady has thrown for a modest 402 yards in two games this season but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, led by their defense, are off to a 2-0 start. Rodgers’s Green Bay Packers are 1-1, having regrouped to beat the Chicago Bears at home last Sunday following a season-opening loss at Minnesota.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 could headline PS Plus Essential line up for August

Update: Sony has officially confirmed that the PlayStation Plus Essential games are Yakuza: Like A Dragon, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, and Little Nightmares, and they’ve confirmed that every mainline Yakuza game is coming to the higher tiers of the service.

In August, PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium users will get Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, and Yakuza Kiwami 2. For those of you unfamiliar with the series, 0 is a prequel (and the best starting point for new players), while Kiwami 1 and 2 are remakes of the original PS2 games.

“Later this year,” according to the official announcement (opens in new tab), Premium members will get the the remastered PS4 versions of Yakuza 3, 4, and 5. Both Extra and Premium members will get Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, the final story for long-time series protagonist Kiryu.

With that, the only Yakuza games missing from PS Plus will be the non-canon spin-offs like Dead Souls and the as-yet-untranslated samurai-themed games. The whole mainline Yakuza series is on Xbox Game Pass, too, so you can get your gritty, goofy crime drama on whatever console you prefer.

Original story: Several new PlayStation Plus Essential games seem to have leaked online before an official announcement.

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: Dealabs (opens in new tab) user billbil-Kun has leaked the supposed new games set to be added to the PS Plus Essentials tier. This time, Yakuza: Like a Dragon’s PS4 and PS5 versions are set to join the tier, an absolute must-play modern RPG from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio.

Elsewhere, the user claims Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 remasters will both be joining the subscription tier for PS Plus Essential users. Both games should be an excellent bonus for subscribers, even if we’re unfortunately never getting remasters of the third and fourth games in the franchise.

Finally, the trio of new additions is rounded out by the original Little Nightmares. Developer Tarsier’s original horror adventure is a standout of the genre, one of the best original horror games released over the past decade, you could say, and will be another must-play for PS Plus Essential tier users.

In all, it’s a pretty stacked line-up for PS Plus Essential users. It’s also a fantastic deal when you consider that these three games will all be offered to users on the cheapest subscription tier for PS Plus, opening up the action-packed Yakuza drama, skating antics, and horrific tales for bigger audiences. Considering PS Plus users were just offered Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade earlier this month, it’s a great time for JRPG fans.

Head over to our PS Plus tiers explained guide to see which subscription package is the best for you.

Charles Oliveira-Islam Makhachev lightweight title bout to headline UFC 280 on Oct. 22 in Abu Dhabi

The UFC has booked a lightweight title fight between Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev to headline UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The UFC 280 pay-per-view event takes place on Oct. 22 at Etihad Arena. Officials announced the lightweight contest Saturday.

Officially, the fight will be for the UFC’s vacant 155-pound title, although the majority of the sport essentially views Oliveira (33-8) as the defending champion.

Oliveira, of Brazil, won the title in 2021 with a knockout over Michael Chandler. He successfully defended the belt against Dustin Poirier in December but then surrendered it in May when he was unable to make weight for a scheduled defense against Justin Gaethje.

Oliveira went on to submit Gaethje in the first round at UFC 274. Officially, that result went down as a nontitle fight for Oliveira. He has won 11 consecutive bouts, a streak that includes 10 finishes.

Makhachev (22-1) is widely viewed as the biggest threat to Oliveira’s dominance. A longtime teammate of retired former champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, Makhachev has won 10 in a row in the UFC. He has finished his past four opponents, including back-to-back finishes in the first round.

Agent’s Take: Kyler Murray, DK Metcalf, Deebo Samuel headline nine NFL stars seeking a big deal or trade

Player dissatisfaction with existing contracts and frustration with the negotiation of new contracts regularly occurs every offseason. There are different ways to handle contract unhappiness. Some players attend offseason workouts as a gesture of good faith that there will be a positive result. Others express their displeasure by refusing to attend the offseason workout program, organized team activities and mandatory minicamp.

The three-day June minicamp camp is the only mandatory offseason activity. Players under contract who don’t attend this minicamp are subject to a $95,877 fine under the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement this year. It’s a $15,980 hit for the first day missed, $31,980 for a second missed day and $47,936 with a third missed day.

These penalties for missing mandatory minicamp don’t apply to unsigned restricted free agents, franchise and transition players. Their attendance isn’t required because of the absence of a signed contract. Players under contract are withholding services they are contractually obligated to perform while unsigned players have no such obligation.

Twelve of the 32 NFL teams (Colts, Buccaneers, 49ers, Giants, Lions, Packers, Patriots, Raiders, Rams Seahawks, Steelers and Vikings) are holding minicamp this week. Seventeen teams will have minicamp next week. The Dolphins had their minicamp last week. The Bengals and Eagles will not be holding a mandatory minicamp.

Here’s a look at the situations of nine notable players who are unhappy with their situations, who either want a new contract or a trade. Three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald was going to headline the list. He was threatening retirement until the Rams gave him an unprecedented three-year, $95 million contract, which added $40 million to his existing deal without getting any new contract years in return, on Monday. Donald becomes the first non-quarterback to break the $30 million-per-year barrier. He was also the first to crack the $20 million-per-year mark.

Murray has been pushing for a new deal practically ever since the Cardinals lost to the Rams in the wild card playoff round. Erik Burkhardt, Murray’s agent, released a statement in all capital letters in February essentially demanding a new contract. The Cardinals haven’t made an offer to Murray. Burkhardt recently pulled the offer he had made to the Cardinals.

When the offseason workout program started in mid-April, Murray was a no-show. This prompted some speculation that Murray could eventually be traded. Cardinals GM Steve Keim stating there’s “zero chance” of Murray being traded should end the rumors. The two-time Pro Bowler has skipped most of Arizona’s organized team activities. Keim sounded optimistic about getting an extension done during a recent appearance on the Pat McAfee Show.

Murray could be the beneficiary of the Cardinals not operating on his timetable for a new contract. Nobody envisioned quarterback Deshaun Watson getting a fully guaranteed, five-year, $230 million contract in connection with his trade from the Browns to the Texans, especially considering the sexual assault and misconduct allegations he’s still facing. Watson had four years worth $136 million remaining on the four-year contract extension, averaging $39 million per year he signed in September 2020. Burkhardt pushing for a fully guaranteed contract comparable to Watson’s wouldn’t be a surprise.

A fully guaranteed contract could be problematic because of the NFL’s archaic funding rules and the Cardinals aren’t considered a cash-rich team. Teams are required to put into an escrow account the amount of any guarantees in a contract other than those just for injury, including ones in future contract years.

The Cardinals didn’t pay Murray’s signing bonus in a lump sum like 2019 second overall pick Nick Bosa got from the 49ers as $6,839,924 of Murray’s $23,589,924 signing bonus was deferred until March 1, 2020.

Mayfield, who is scheduled to play this season under a fully guaranteed $18.858 million fifth-year option, doesn’t want a new contract and the 2018 first overall pick has asked to be traded.

Mayfield seemingly became expendable after the Browns unexpectedly gave up 2022, 2023 and 2024 first-round picks, a 2022 fourth-round pick, a 2023 third-round pick and a 2024 fourth-round pick to the Texans for Watson and a 2024 sixth-round pick in March.

The biggest sticking point in a Mayfield trade has been the amount of his fifth-year option salary the Browns will need to eat in order to part ways with him. A trade to the Panthers during late April’s NFL Draft reportedly fell apart over this issue. According to the Charlotte Observer, the Panthers wanted the Browns to pay $13 million to $14 million, which would have been converted to signing bonus pre-trade, of the $18.858 million.

The 49ers excused quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who likely will be traded once he resumes throwing a football after undergoing right shoulder surgery in March, from this week’s minicamp. The Browns followed suit on Wednesday, excusing Mayfield from next week’s mandatory minicamp, CBS Sports NFL Insider Josina Anderson confirmed.

Samuel showed up for this week’s minicamp after missing all of San Francisco’s other offseason activities. He has not participated in practices.

Samuel requested a trade earlier in the offseason. His reasons for wanting out of San Francisco have never been revealed. There is speculation that Samuel doesn’t want to continue in the dual role as a wide receiver and running back he took on last season.

49ers general manager John Lynch rejected all overtures from other teams about Samuel prior to this year’s draft. Last week, Lynch said he would be a fool to trade Samuel, who earned All-Pro honors last season while emerging as one of the NFL’s most dangerous offensive weapons.

Samuel led the league with 18.2 yards per catch. He caught 77 passes for 1,405 yards with six touchdowns. Samuel was also a threat out of the backfield. He performed at a Pro Bowl level as a running back when the 49ers started utilizing him in that capacity because of injuries. Samuel rushed for 365 yards on 59 carries (6.2 yards per carry) and scored eight touchdowns on the ground. His 1,770 yards from scrimmage (combined rushing and receiving yards) were third in the NFL last season.

My experience as an agent was that money could cure most ills with clients. If that holds true for Samuel, the 49ers should be prepared to top the deal fellow 2019 second-round pick A.J. Brown signed when traded to the Eagles during the first round of the draft. The Eagles gave Brown a four-year, $100 million extension containing $57,220,471 of guarantees.

Metcalf skipped the first day of minicamp after attending portions of the optional offseason workouts although he was rehabbing from foot surgery. His minicamp absence is unexcused.

Metcalf should be wary about playing out his contract given Seattle’s quarterback situation. Either Drew Lock or Geno Smith will be replacing Russell Wilson, who was traded to the Broncos in March. The drop off at quarterback should be appreciable.

Brown’s deal could be of particular importance to Metcalf. They were teammates in college at Ole Miss, selected 13 picks apart in 2019’s second round. Metcalf is the more accomplished of the two. He set a Seahawks franchise record in 2020 with 1,303 receiving yards.

Schultz had been a participant in the Cowboys’ offseason workouts until this week. Frustrated by the slow pace of negotiations for a new contract, Schultz isn’t attending the rest of OTAs. Whether he is willing to subject himself to the 95,877 fine for missing next week’s minicamp remains to be seen. Schultz quickly signed his $10.931 million tender after the Cowboys made him a franchise player in March.

The franchise tender creates more of a sense of urgency with his contract negotiations. The deadline for franchise players to sign long-term deals is July 15 at 4 p.m. ET.

The Cowboys can’t be happy about the latest data point in the tight end market. The Browns recently gave David Njoku, who was also franchised, a four-year, $54.75 million contract worth up to $56.75 million with incentives. The deal contains $28 million in guarantees, of which $17 million was fully guaranteed at signing.

Njoku’s $13,687,500 average per year should serve as a salary floor for Schultz especially since Njoku doesn’t measure up to him statistically. Schultz had a career year in 2021 with 78 catches, 808 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. He was more productive last season in 17 games than Njoku was over the last two seasons combined in the 29 games he played. Njoku caught 55 passes for 688 yards with six touchdowns. Schultz has 23 more receptions, 120 more receiving yards and two more touchdown catches than Njoku.

The last two times the Cowboys let someone play a season under a franchise tag, it cost them far more to eventually sign these players long term. The same dynamic would likely apply to Schultz with a productive 2022 season.

The Cowboys definitely wouldn’t have needed to sign defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence to a five-year, $105 million contract, averaging $21 million per year, if a deal had been done in 2018. At the July 15 long-term-deal deadline for franchise players, the $20 million-per-year non-quarterback didn’t exist.

Dak Prescott doesn’t sign a $40 million-per-year contract in March 2021 with an agreement reached in July 2020. There’s a good chance Prescott’s would deal would have been under the $35 million-per-year extension Wilson signed with the Seahawks in 2019. Watson didn’t get his $39 million-per-year extension from the Texans until right before the 2020 regular season started.

Bates reportedly has no intention of playing under his $12.911 million franchise tag. Sitting out the season if a long-term deal isn’t reached by July 15 would be surprising. The franchise tag is more than twice as much what Bates made from his four-year rookie contract that expired after the 2021 season. Bates’ career earnings to date from his NFL player contract are just over $6.225 million.

It is a rarity for franchise players to miss a season. Last time it happened before Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell in 2018 was with Chiefs defensive lineman Dan Williams in 1998.

The Bengals probably don’t want to pay Bates any more than the $14 million per year Marcus Williams, who was designated as a franchise player by the Saints in 2021, received from the Ravens on a five-year deal in free agency this year. Bates likely has his sights set on the top of the safety market. The Broncos made Justin Simmons, who was on his second straight franchise tag, the league’s highest-paid safety at $15.25 million per year in March 2021. That was before Jamal Adams reset the safety market with a four-year, $70 million extension, averaging $17.5 million per year and worth up to $72 million through incentives and salary escalators, from the Seahawks last August.

McLaurin hasn’t been around for any of Washington’s offseason activities. The 2019 third-round pick will be the beneficiary of the exploding wide receiver market should he get a long-term deal this year. When the offseason began, there were only four wide receivers with contracts averaging at least $20 million per year. There are now 10, with more on the way.

During McLaurin’s three seasons in Washington he has practically averaged 74 receptions, 1,030 receiving yards and five touchdown catches without quarterback stability. Offseason acquisition Carson Wentz should be the best quarterback McLaurin has had in Washington.

A franchise tag analysis could also enter the equation. The 2023 wide receiver number should be in the $20 million range. A second franchise tag in 2024 at a CBA mandated 20% raise would be around $24 million. The $22 million average of two projected franchise tags could be an important benchmark in McLaurin contract discussions.

Moore ended his offseason absence by showing up this week for the Colts’ minicamp. The 2021 Pro Bowler has two-years left on the four-year, $33.3 million extension worth up to $39.355 million through salary escalators he signed in 2019 to primarily be a slot cornerback. The other original ballot 2021 Pro Bowl cornerbacks on veteran deals have contracts averaging at least $16.5 million per year. This is almost double the base value of Moore’s extension, which is $8.325 million per year.

The Colts normally don’t address contracts with two years remaining. Retired quarterback Andrew Luck, offensive guard Quenton Nelson and offensive tackle Braden Smith didn’t sign deals until in a contract year. Nelson is the Colts’ top signing priority. The 2018 first-round pick and three-time All-Pro is scheduled to play the 2022 season on a $13.754 million fifth-year option.

The Bills are unsure whether Poyer will be at next week’s minicamp. He has skipped Buffalo’s offseason workouts thus far.

Poyer is entering the final year of a two-year, $19.25 million extension worth up to $20.75 million with incentives signed in March 2020. He recently switched agents to Drew Rosenhaus in a push for a new deal that would allow him to finish his career in Buffalo.

Poyer was named an All-Pro by the Associated Press and Pro Football Writers of America last year. The same cannot be said for the league’s three highest-paid safeties: Adams ($17.5 million per year), Harrison Smith ($16 million per year) and Simmons ($15.25 million per year).

At 31 years old, Poyer’s age would likely be held against him if he hit the open market next offseason. Three-time All-Pro Tyrann Mathieu, at age 30, had a softer than expected market in free agency this year. He didn’t sign a three-year, $27 million deal worth up to $33 million through incentives with the Saints until early May.

Poyer’s best deal will likely come from the Bills. The Vikings took care of a 32-year-old Smith last preseason with a four-year, $64 million extension. Trying to get similar money from the Bills would be an extremely ambitious undertaking by Poyer.

Marcus Smart, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Rudy Gobert headline NBA’s All-Defensive teams

Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart, Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert and Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo highlighted the 2021-22 NBA All-Defensive teams, which were announced on Friday night.

Smart, the league’s 2021-22 Defensive Player of the Year, earned his third first-team nod. He was joined at the guard spot by Mikal Bridges of the Phoenix Suns, who earned his first career All-Defensive team nod. Smart and Bridges were the top two vote-getters.

Antetokounmpo picked up his fifth All-Defensive team award and his fourth first-team selection. Since All-Defensive Teams were first announced in 1968-69, the only other players with four first-team selections and multiple MVPs are Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Tim Duncan.

Antetokounmpo was joined at the forward spot by Memphis’ Jaren Jackson Jr. who, like Bridges, earned his first selection.

Gobert, who had won three of the last four Defensive Player of the Year awards, earned his sixth consecutive selection. That breaks a tie with Hakeem Olajuwon and Abdul-Jabbar for the most consecutive first-team honors for a center.

The second team was Milwaukee’s Jrue Holiday, Philadelphia’s Matisse Thybulle, Miami’s Bam Adebayo, Golden State’s Draymond Green and Boston’s Robert Williams III.

With Smart and Williams making the team, it’s the first time Boston has had multiple players on the All-Defensive Team since Rajon Rondo and Kevin Garnett made the squad in 2011-12.

The Celtics had six players end up with a vote as Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum and Al Horford all picked up a first-team vote. Celtics reserve guard Derrick White, acquired at the trade deadline from the San Antonio Spurs, received three second-team votes.

Holiday’s selection, his fourth overall, earned him a $120,000 bonus.

It was Green’s seventh selection to the team, and he did so playing in just 46 games. According to ESPN Stats & Information research, only Andrei Kirilenko (41 in 2004-05) and Scottie Pippen (44 in 1997-98) made the All-Defensive team playing in fewer games.

Adebayo made his third career All-Defensive team (all second teams) while it was Thybulle’s second and Williams’ first.

Rookies Evan Mobley of Cleveland and Herb Jones of New Orleans were the fifth and sixth-place vote-getters for forwards. They missed out on becoming the first rookies to make the All-Defensive team since Tim Duncan did so in 1997-98.
