The ‘Bear-raid’ siren gone from Soldier Field via gameday changes

The “Bear-raid” siren played on kickoffs and key defensive plays will no longer be used at Soldier Field, one official told Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune.

If you’ve forgotten what the blaring siren sounds like, here’s a piece of audio to refresh your memory.

According to Kane, the siren debuted in 2018 during a 15-6 Bears win over the Los Angeles Rams, which was a war of attrition if memory serves Bears fans correctly.

But, to new requests for the Bears’ gameday operations for 2022, the siren will no longer be used. The team hasn’t played it once this season, even during the Bears’ lone preseason game at Soldier Field.

The Bears even played the siren in 2020, when fans weren’t allowed to attend games.

Gameday Skull Session: Get Dumped Then, Purdue

I’ve been waiting for this day.

Ever since watching Purdue drive a knife into my team’s throat on national television back in 2018, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the chance for the Buckeyes to return the favor.

This is it. Purdue Pete dies today.

I haven’t been shy about my thoughts on this Purdue team. I think it’s the most threatening team in the Big Ten at the moment, and if Ohio State’s going to lose another game in the regular season, it’s going to be this one. The Trainbuiler defense is legit good and the passing offense is one of the best in the country.

But that just makes what’s about to happen even sweeter.

See, this isn’t an innocent and hapless Purdue squad with nothing to play for and no hope. This is a confident and talented team with a chance at a conference title still on the line. This is a team with one of the to receivers in the country, a quarterback that just threw for over 500 yards and a defensive end that just got mocked as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Purdue has never had swagger like this heading into Columbus. That means that today, the Buckeyes don’t just get the chance to avenge a three-year-old loss, they have the chance to crush spirits, demoralize and break hearts. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Word of the Day: Trainwreck.

GAMEDAY MENU. It will be a delightful day of college football, I think. Enjoy.

CULTURE CHANGER. This game feels quite a bit different than any other game against the Train Builders in recent memory.

In the past, any Purdue success against the Buckeyes could rather easily be dismissed as a trap game or a result of witchcraft, sorcery, aliens, divine intervention, or any other extra-worldly explanation.

But if Purdue comes out and slaps Ohio State around for 60 minutes today, it won’t feel like a fluke. It will feel like a good football team besting another good football team. That was a change David Bell wanted to see when he came to Purdue.

“I wanted to change the culture,” Bell said after the Purdue Giant-Killers won their second game this season over a top-5 team – in this case, undefeated, No. 3 Michigan State, beating the Spartans 40-29. Bell caught 11 passes for 217 yards and a touchdown.

“We definitely had a bad rep, not being able to win the games we were supposed to win and losing the games we weren’t supposed to win. So, I think, we’re changing the narrative right now.”

You change that narrative, David – just not against my team, please.

DIFFERENT SPORT. DIFFERENT INDIANA TEAM. SAME BUCKEYES. The football team ain’t the only Buckeyes playing an Indiana team with something on the line today. The Ohio State Club Rugby team is playing for a conference title against the Hoosiers in Chicago at 2 p.m. today.

Indiana gave Ohio State its only conference loss of the year earlier this season and beat the Buckeyes in Columbus in their last title game appearance two years ago. Needless to say, it’s time for revenge.

Basically, the whole state of Indiana can get dumped today across all sports. Please and thank you.

PICKS PICKS PICKS. Here they are – the correct picks.

  • Michigan -1.5 against Penn State. Weird as it is, I think Michigan is actually the more consistent team in this matchup. I think Michigan’s got the noticeably better offense and has arguably the better defense. The only thing working against them is Beaver Stadium, but it helps that it’s a nooner and not a night game white out.
  • Oklahoma -5.5 against Baylor. It’s very clear that Oklahoma needs some style points to have any hope of making the College Football Playoff, and I like this offense a lot more with Caleb Williams running the show. I’m not going to pretend like this is the same Oklahoma that typically runs through the Big 12, but it’ll win by a touchdown.
  • Ohio State vs Purdue under 63.5 points. A lot of people are going to see this matchup as one of the high-powered offenses, but I see two drastically underrated defenses. I think this is much more low-scoring than a point-per-minute.
  • Boston College +2 against Georgia Tech. I would have thought Boston College was the better team in this game even before the return of Phil Jurkovec, now I think they’re decidedly better in pretty much every aspect of the game. They’re going to win straight up.
  • Virginia +6.5 against Notre Dame. I think Virginia is a sneaky good football team. The Cavaliers actually lead the nation in total offense and though their defense is not good, Notre Dame’s offense has been its weak spot. I’m not saying Virginia is going to win, but I’ll absolutely take them getting almost a touchdown at home against an Irish team I think is overrated.
  • NC State +2 against Wake Forest. I’ve been on the Wake train for a lot of this season, but I honestly think the wrong team is favored here. As good as Wake’s offense is, that Wolfpack have the No. 6 scoring defense in the country, and an offens that’s noticeably better than Wake’s defense.

College GameDay, Big Noon Kickoff on campus

We’re finally here! Both Michigan State and Michigan enter Saturday’s game ranked the top 10 – the Wolverines at No. 6 and the Spartans No. 7 – and sporting identical records 7-0 records.

On top of that, both “ESPN College GameDay” and Fox Sports’ “Big Noon Kickoff” will both be broadcasting in East Lansing.

Follow along here all day with our live blog, which begins at 8 a.m. Saturday. We’ll be providing written updates and tweets from campus, including the sites of both pre-game shows, and live coverage from the noon kickoff.

Pregame

Former MSU standout and first-round draft pick Julian Peterson was a guest on Fox Sports’ “Big Noon Kickoff,” but was used mainly for a segment where Bob Stoops was showing how Michigan’s defense will try and contain Michigan State’s offense.

The Barstool Sports squad is set up in Cedar Village, and might actually have a bigger crowd than both ESPN and Fox. Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, a Michigan grad, is doing an expert job trolling the (presumably) mostly Spartan fans set up in the popular area known for its couch fires.

There are plenty of photos in the gallery above, but below you can see a couple of the best signs from the GameDay set.

Fox and ESPN are set up on opposite sides of Spartan Stadium, but both pregame shows have big crowds surrounding them.

And if we’re being honest, the Big Noon Kickoff, which just went live at 10 a.m., looks like it has the bigger crowd. Reggie Bush led a “Go Green, Go White” chant to kick off the show and host Rob Stone made a reference to Bush perhaps being at Harper’s on Friday night.

Michigan State men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo appeared on ESPN College GameDay for a few minutes, discussing his love for football, playing the sport for a little bit at Northern Michigan and being roommates and best friends with former Detroit Lions coach Steve Mariucci.

Izzo also predicted a 27-20 Spartan victory.

Michigan State football coach Mel Tucker made an appearance on “ESPN College GameDay” at 9:20 a.m. And for the final question, Rece Davis teed it up for Tucker and asked him what his true feelings were about Michigan.

Tucker’s quote: “Yeah, I don’t like Michigan,” in which fans roared in delight at the response. Tucker knows how to play to a crowd.

Tucker also talked about Nick Saban’s importance on his coaching philosophy, and said linebacker Quavaris Crouch is someone to watch as an “unsung hero” today.

The fans are out and the signs are plentiful as “ESPN College GameDay” just went live a few minutes ago. Campus looks electric.

From MSU police: All north campus lots are now full. The next available parking is Ramp 1 (Shaw Lane) and Ramp 3 (Wharton Center).

MSU police also recommend that if you’re coming from the east on I-96, take exit 110 (Okemos Road) to Jolly Road, to Hagadorn Road, to Shaw Lane and enter campus at either Wilson Road or Shaw Lane.

Click the map HERE for specific directions if you’re from out of town.

In case you’re wondering what exactly is the complete schedule for this morning, here is the list and times for everything, courtesy of the MSU football Twitter account.

“ESPN College GameDay” doesn’t go live for another 35 minutes, but the Michigan State students are unbothered by the inclement weather as they’re already lined up to get their moments on camera, signs in hand.

We’ll post the best ones throughout the morning.

There are already traffic issues in East Lansing, with gridlock already appearing on U.S. 127 and I-496, according to the East Lansing Police Department. Don’t plan for it to get better.

A selection of stories to read heading into the Michigan State-Michigan game.
