5 questions, 5 answers: FSU beats UF in rivalry showdown

Well, that was fun.

No. 16 Florida State (9-3, 5-3 ACC) capped off a major leap of a third season under head coach Mike Norvell on Friday with a win over the Florida Gators (6-6, 3-5 SEC), improving by four wins from last season.

The Seminoles earned every inch of the win, fighting off a feisty Gators squad that was able to find plenty of success on the offensive side of the ball to keep things close throughout the game.

To break down the win, the Tomahawk Nation staff tackles five questions below.

What was your favorite Jordan Travis play of the night?

Perry: They were all fantastic, but the second play in the red zone (that wasn’t called a touchdown but was a touchdown) was especially impressive because he had just done that against the Florida defense previously. It’s a testament to Travis’ playmaking ability that it is now just expected that he’s capable at any moment of stringing together a multitude of jaw-dropping sack-evading plays.

LastNoleOfKrypton: Will anyone choose anything over that Houdini moment in the red zone? Kid’s magic.

Evan Johnson: I refuse to pick one. He wasn’t perfect but he was calm, cool and collected and forced that FSU offense to execute.

NoleThruandThru: Yes.

Juan Montalvo III: My favorite was the time when Jordan beat the Gators.

Tommy Mire: I don’t really have a favorite. Pretty much anytime Travis got in the open field made my jaw drop.

Why was UF able to find success against the FSU defense?

LastNoleOfKrypton: UF’s offensive line played one heck of a game; they were able to take advantage of miscommunication in the secondary affecting both coverages and run fits.

Evan Johnson: UF has a pretty good offense but it feels like FSU was confused by all of the motion UF employed and they shouldn’t have been. They had just seen a similar offense. They knew what was coming. UF has a good OL too and they played a very good game. Thankfully Billy Napier went full stupid coming out of the half and stopped trying to run the ball.

Perry: Poor communication in the secondary kept leading to wide open receivers, and then poor pursuit angles by FSU defenders in open space helped augment those already big plays. With all the success that Florida State has had on defense this year, the secondary has been a concern in several matchups and very nearly cost FSU this game.

NoleThruandThru: FSU was hampered by its emotion in the first half, and in the second half there were multiple instances of pre-snap confusion that UF capitalized on. Lots of self-inflicted mistakes on both sides of the ball, but major credit to the UF offensive line as well. They did whatever they wanted against the FSU defensive line for much of the night.

Juan: Really physical play from UF disrupted FSU in the first half, it seemed. They were able to recover and regroup, and show their physicality. The goal line near-stand showed what FSU could do once settled in.

Tommy Mire: Their backs were hitting the gaps well and double teams up front were making huge holes to go through. Richardson’s size and running ability were definitely evident when he saw a lane.

What did the win tell you about this team and program?

LastNoleOfKrypton: The climb gets more enjoyable with each game; can’t wait to see who we face in the bowl game.

Evan Johnson: That they own the state for now. There’s still lots of room for improvement but they also showed a lot of fight. They didn’t collapse in on themselves like they’ve done earlier this season. Progress isn’t linear but they are certainly progressing.

Perry: This is what it’s supposed to look like. FSU finished off the year on a five-game win streak, looking like the better team in almost all of its matchups this season. The team was capable of handling adversity, pressure and expectations, and given the incremental signs of progress we’ve seen over the last few years, it really has to make you excited to see what could possibly come in 2023.

NoleThruandThru: The team is still learning to handle its emotions, which is an extremely tough balance to strike in a rivalry game. Mike Norvell was prepared for this, constantly reminding the team to keep a mental edge, and numerous players responded back to him in the same way. The cameras captured Verse pointing to his head and accepting responsibility on a penalty, which is an excellent example of coachability and leadership.

Juan: This team – and, I think the program – has grit. We knew that, but the first two Norvell teams, all the Willie teams, and even Jimbo’s last couple teams may have folded in that situation.

Tommy Mire: Those guys play for each other and the improvement is apparent, which was noticeable even in fall camp. It’s a strong foundation for Mike Norvell to build on and the seniors are leaving the program the best that it has been in a long time.

Which win was more fun — Florida or Miami?

LastNoleOfKrypton: This one was more fun; Miami being the blowout that it was more satisfying.

Evan Johnson: How do you pick a favorite child? For me a win over UF is always going to be more worthwhile than a win over UM. I think part of it has to do with the SEC garbage you always here about. If FSU played in the SEC they’d be undefeated. I can say that because they are already undefeated in the SEC without even playing in that conference.

Perry: Fun for a neutral viewer? Tonight, because that was just fun football. FSU fans though? There was not a sense of fun had likely until Florida State took over on downs to kneel out the clock in the fourth. Smacking down Miami and adding on to an already-miserable season though, that just felt great.

NoleThruandThru: Miami was more fun, but tonight was more satisfying.

Juan: What NTT said.

Tommy Mire: Miami. This win had me not watching some plays out of fear that I would somehow jinx it and the score/ending was a little too close for comfort. But hey, they started the season with a thrilling win against LSU and ended it in a similar fashion.

No question, just a free space to use creative, non-explicit language to describe tonight’s refs

LastNoleOfKrypton: They bet UF +9.5

Evan Johnson: It’s clear that conferences do not care about officiating in any sport. Often times rules are difficult to consistently enforce and then you have what happened tonight. I have no words for the way the refs ran this game.

Perry: Press boxes are normally very restrained in speaking out when refs make calls — but across the board, from all different outlets and teams, every time this crew did something there was a communal exhibition of exasperation. These idiots really reviewed an obvious touchdown that had obvious targeting, overturned the score but then didn’t call the late hit????

NoleThruandThru: Remember when they missed an obvious delay of game? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Anyway, enough about those boneheads. How on earth could a recruit at Doak tonight NOT have FSU as a serious contender? Huge shoutout to the fans for creating an electric atmosphere for recruits from 2023, ‘24, ‘25, and yes, even ‘26, to witness! The nation saw tonight that Doak can still rock at night with the best of them.

Juan: No explicit language? That’s b—[censored, arrested, identity wiped from the internet]

Tommy Mire: I actually heard that a fan jumping over the railings while storming the field broke an ankle and It looked very very bad (If by any chance you’re reading this in your hospital bed I hope you’re ok, seriously.) But I’m surprised the refs didn’t stop the celebrations to check to see if their ankle was truly broken and then issue the ground a 10-yard penalty only to reverse it FIVE MINUTES LATER.

Aside from that, the fans storming the field was a first for me and we had a nice view from the press box. This win was truly the happiest I’ve seen FSU fans in quite a while. A very good ending to the regular season.

FSU outlasts injuries, Malik Cunningham to beat Louisville

Florida State Seminoles football had every reason to crumble against Louisville on Friday night.

On the road, facing a raucous crowd that always enjoys making the Seminoles miserable, FSU lost possibly its best defensive player (defensive end Jared Verse), potentially best offensive lineman (Robert Scott) and likely best player on the roster (Jordan Travis.) Florida State had started off hot, but cooled off a bit as Louisville quarterback Malik Cunningham worked his magic.

Somehow, someway, Florida State persevered through all of that, riding the talents of wide receiver Johnny Wilson and the Seminoles’ running back room to escape Cardinal Stadium with a 35-31 victory.

It certainly did not come easy — with just under two minutes left in the game, kicker Ryan Fitzgerald missed his second field goal of the game, giving Louisville one final chance to fight back and try to beat FSU for the third year in the row.

Instead, quarterback Tate Rodemaker rose to the occasion, bouncing back from a forgettable start to lead the Seminoles on three separate scoring drives.

His job became a bit easier thanks to the talents of Wilson and backs Treshaun Ward, Lawrance Toafili and Trey Benson — especially Ward, who managed to be the deciding factor in keeping the Seminoles afloat.

Florida State is now 3-0 for the first time since 2015, in addition to 1-0 in the ACC for the first time since 2015 as well.

Florida State takes on the Boston College Eagles next Saturday in Tallahassee at 8 p.m.

FSU football vs. Duquesne: Game recap, score, photos

What a kickoff to the 2022 Florida State football season.

The Seminoles welcomed FCS opponent Duquesne into a renovated Doak Campbell Stadium on Saturday to usher in FSU’s third season under head coach Mike Norvell.

Florida State had a disastrous meeting with an FCS team last season en route to a 5-7 finish. FSU enters this season with new talent, including transfer pass rusher Jared Verse. The offense will be led again by dual-threat quarterback Jordan Travis, who threw for 15 touchdowns and ran for seven more last season.

The Dukes went 7-3 in 2021 and beat FBS school Ohio. Quarterback Joe Mischler, an all-NEC player who tore his ACL to start last season, was back to open the 2022 season for Duquesne.

What channel is the FSU game on? How to watch Florida State Seminoles vs. Duquesne Dukes on TV, live stream

Braving the rain: What rain? Florida State football fans wait out lightning delay before first game of 2022 season

What are the odds? What’s the over-under for Florida State wins in 2022? Here’s what oddsmakers think.

Hauling it in: These four Florida State football players could end Seminoles’ 400-yard receiving drought

Florida State is 1-0 after a dominating win over an FCS opponent.

Takeaways: Florida State dominates Duquesne, flexes impressive running game

FSU quarterback Jordan Travis is done for the day.

Backup quarterback Tate Rodemaker replaced Travis during the third quarter. Travis completed 11 of 15 passes for 207 yards while recording 11 rushing yards and a touchdown on four carries.

Several other starters are out of the game heading into the fourth quarter.

FSU heads into halftime with a 26-0 lead after kicker Ryan Fitzgerald connected on two 24-yard field goals in the second quarter.

Running backs Treshaun Ward, Trey Benson and Lawrance Toafili have been the story of this game so far. All three of them have had some impressive runs and several broken tackles. The Seminoles have 200 rushing yards on 28 carries.

Quarterback Jordan Travis completed 10 of 14 passes for 159 yards while turning four carries into 11 yards and a score. Mycah Pittman leads the wide receivers with four catches for 44 yards. Johnny Wilson snagged a 51-yard reception before leaving the game with an injury.

Duquesne quarterback Joe Mischler went 3 of 9 for 34 passing yards. FSU tallied four pass breakups and three tackles for a loss. Overall, the Seminoles outgained the Dukes 359-88 in total yardage.

FSU is in full command right now as it leaves the first quarter with a 20-0 lead.

The Seminoles have heavily leaned on their ground game, accumulating 129 yards on 19 carries across three possessions. Treshaun Ward continues to pace the running backs, leading the group with 69 rushing yards and a touchdown on eight carries.

The one concerning development for FSU, though, has been all of the injuries so far. Receiver Johnny Wilson went down with an injury on his 51-yard catch during the second drive. Center Darius Washington also left the game with an injury. Left guard Dillan Gibbons took Washington’s place.

Cornerback Omarion Cooper, receivers Ontaria Wilson and Ja’Khi Douglas, and center Maurice Smith were among players who didn’t dress out for the game.

First drive of the season, first touchdown of the season.

FSU capped a 12-play, 82-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run from quarterback Jordan Travis. The Seminoles mysteriously attempted a two-point conversion, which was unsuccessful.

The FSU ground game looked strong on that opening drive. The Seminoles turned nine carries into 65 yards. Running back Treshaun Ward led the group with 38 rushing yards on four rushes.

It appears that top cornerback Omarion “Duke” Cooper will not play for Florida State against Duquesne.

Cooper, who listed as its starting boundary cornerback on its two-deep depth chart Monday, is not dressed out. Fellow defensive back Travis Jay and wide receiver Ontaria Wilson also aren’t dressed out.

True freshman Azareye’h Thomas seems likely to start in Cooper’s place. The Niceville High product was listed as Cooper’s backup on the depth chart. Thomas enrolled a semester early in January and has impressed all offseason, especially in preseason camp.

Another true freshman, Sam McCall, is another cornerback who could receive more playing time.

The Florida State and Duquesne players have taken the field to resume pregame warmups.

The scoreboard clock just started counting down, and now the new anticipated start time is 6:30 p.m. The game will still be aired on ACC Network.

The 5 p.m. start time has been officially delayed.

And the players on both teams are still inside to have safe shelter. Some Duquesne players, though, are standing near the visitors tunnel. When pregame warmups will resume remains unclear.

Once pregame warmups start up again, there will be a new anticipated start time.

This game could start later than scheduled.

The game is officially under a weather delay due to lightning in the area. The players warming up on the field had to head back inside to have safe shelter. It’s also raining pretty hard at Doak Campbell Stadium.

Stay tuned for more updates.

More than a dozen unpadded FSU players are on the field and warming up.

FSU already ruled out six players due to undisclosed injuries: centers Maurice Smith and Kayden Lyles, wide receivers Ja’Khi Douglas and Winston Wright Jr., linebacker Stephen Dix Jr. and walk-on running back CJ Campbell. Lyles, Dix and Campbell suffered season-ending injuries.

Reserve wide receiver Darion Williamson is not eligible to play in the first half against Duquesne. The redshirt sophomore picked up a targeting penalty in the second half against Florida, the final game of FSU’s 2021 season.

FSU professor murder: Hitmen killed Daniel Markel nearly 8 years ago. Now, his former brother-in-law has been arrested in the case

Professor Daniel Markel was fatally shot in the head at his home on July 18, 2014, CNN has reported.

On Wednesday, Charles Adelson, Markel’s former brother-in-law, was indicted in Leon County on charges of first-degree murder; conspiracy to commit murder; and solicitation to commit murder, according to a grand jury indictment.

The indictment claims Adelson solicited two men, Sigfredo Garcia and Luis Rivera, in murdering Markel.

Rivera, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder as part of a plea deal, was sentenced to 19 years in 2016, according to CNN affiliate WCTV. Garcia, who pleaded not guilty, was sentenced to life in prison in 2019, according to the Florida Department of Corrections. Leon County Court administrators wouldn’t immediately comment on the cases.

Katherine “Katie” Magbanua is also named in the grand jury indictment. She is facing the same charges as Adelson.

Back In 2016, investigators said Magbanua, Garcia’s ex-girlfriend, helped arrange the murder of Markel, who was in a bitter custody dispute with his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, CNN has reported.

At the time, Adelson and Magbanua were in a romantic relationship, Magbanua’s attorney said.

Tara Kawass, Magbanua’s defense attorney, told CNN Friday in 2019, Magbanua initially went to trial on charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation to commit murder.

The state of Florida moved to join Gracia and Magbanua’s trials, Kawass said. The jury convicted Garcia of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. However, the jury could not agree on Magbanua’s case, resulting in a mistrial, Kawass told CNN.

Magbanua’s trial is scheduled to begin May 16, 2022, according to the Leon County Court. On Friday morning, she pleaded not guilty to all three charges listed against her in Wednesday’s indictment, Kawass said.

Prosecutors claim Magbanua was the only tie between Garcia, Rivera, and the Adelson family, according to Kawass.

Meanwhile, Kawass told CNN while Sigfredo Garcia and Charles Adelson met at some point, the two men “conspired behind her back” regarding Markel’s murder.

As for Charles Adelson, a grand jury has heard new audio which helped implicate him in the murder, according to Jack Campbell, state attorney for the 2nd judicial circuit court of Leon County, Florida.

“This recording includes statements by Charles Adelson which can be heard clearly for the first time,” his statement says. According to CNN affiliate WCTV, the FBI recorded a conversation between Adelson and Magbanua at a restaurant in 2016.

“The government has had the recording for six years and one day,” Magbanua’s attorneys Tara Kawass and Christopher DeCoste said in a statement to CNN Thursday. “Since then, they’ve done endless seances with different audio/video experts trying to hear voices from beyond. What you can hear — not what’s in their grossly inaccurate and inadmissible subtitles — is that Katherine Magbanua is innocent.”

Adelson was arrested at his home in South Florida on Thursday, according to a statement from Campbell. The grand jury indicted him on Wednesday and “he was taken into custody without incident,” he said.

“Charlie is innocent and the prosecutors have no new information that led to this arrest,” David Oscar Markus and Margot Moss, Adelson’s attorneys, told CNN. “The timing sure does stink, doesn’t it? On the eve of a long-awaited trial of Katie, this move has the smell of desperation.”

“The Markel Family is deeply grateful to the State Attorney’s Office, the FBI, and all members of law enforcement for their tireless pursuit of justice,” said a statement from Orin Snyder and Matt Benjamin, attorneys for the Markel family, obtained by CNN affiliate WTXL.

“Nearly eight years after Danny’s tragic murder, these dedicated public servants continue to fight to honor Danny’s memory and to hold accountable all those responsible for his horrific death. On behalf of Danny’s family and friends in the Tallahassee community and all over the world, thank you,” said the Markel family statement.

“Dr. Markel’s family, the Office of State Attorney, and the law-enforcement team behind this continuing investigation will not rest until justice is delivered to every person involved in this terrible crime,” said Campbell.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly described how Garcia and Adelson first met.

Former 5-star OT Amarius Mims to transfer from UGA to FSU

The Florida State offensive line already has picked up two additions through the transfer portal this offseason, but now the Seminoles apparently are getting their biggest one yet.

Former five-star recruit Amarius Mims, who strongly considered FSU during the recruiting process before ultimately signing with Georgia, entered the portal on Monday and is signing with the Seminoles to play in 2022, according to a source close to the situation.

He began an official visit to FSU earlier today.

The 6-foot-7, 330-pounder will be a sophomore this fall after appearing in nine games last season for the national champion Bulldogs.

Mims, who hails from Cochran, Ga., was rated by Rivals as the No. 5 prospect in the country and the No. 1 player in the state of Georgia for the 2021 recruiting cycle.

He had very high praise for FSU offensive line coach Alex Atkins throughout the recruiting process

“I probably have the best relationship out of all the coaches with Coach Atkins,” Mims told Rivals in September of 2020. “He is a great guy that is so easy to talk to. I like him a lot and I would really like to just see what the campus is like before I make my decision.

“I also know Coach Woodson (defensive backs coach Marcus Woodson) really well. I knew him from Auburn, and we have that strong relationship too. The staff at Florida State is really cool.”

While Robert Scott appears to have one starting tackle spot locked up for FSU, there has been a wide-open competition at the other tackle position this spring. Mims likely will compete with fellow transfer Bless Harris, Darius Washington and others when preseason practice opens up in August.

FSU earlier brought in Wisconsin transfer Kayden Lyles to compete for the starting center position and Lamar transfer Bless Harris to compete at tackle.

The windy conditions and quick whistles probably didn’t help an FSU passing offense still searching for success.

It was windy. It didn’t count. It didn’t even have real scoring.

Still, I have to admit, I was hoping and expecting more from the Florida State offense on Saturday afternoon. Especially the passing offense.

But nothing of note happened. Is that cause for concern? I mean, I guess it depends on how much stock you put into spring games. I don’t put a ton into them, but I also don’t think they’re meaningless.

Especially when you have one part of your offense — passing — that has essentially hamstrung you in recent years and made it very hard to win a whole lot of football games.

So, I came into Saturday hoping to see those transfer receivers and Jordan Travis, as well as backup Tate Rodemaker, make some plays through the air. Be able to hit big plays without having to depend on the running game or the athleticism of the quarterback.

Well, that didn’t happen.

Not to make excuses, but part of that likely had to do with the wind. It was whipping around Doak Campbell Stadium pretty fiercely.

And part of that had to do with the sack rules in a game like this, in which the refs blow a play dead if a defender is anywhere near the quarterback — even if it’s a pinky on the shoulder pad as he’s sprinting past and has no chance to actually make a tackle. The play is still blown dead.

“It was frustrating at times for Jordan with the quick whistle,” FSU head coach Mike Norvell said.

Travis lost a first-down completion on a play like that, and Rodemaker lost a 5-yard TD pass to Keyshawn Helton a similar play.

So, both of those were factors in the lack of big plays.

But so were some errant throws and drops.

Rodemaker, who I was really hoping would show all of you what he’s shown all of us this spring, instead threw an interception on his very first pass — Sam McCall intercepted him in the end zone during goal-line drills.

Travis and Duffy, as if to not make him feel bad, threw picks as well during the drill. That wasn’t a great way to start the festivities for the offense, with three interceptions by three different quarterbacks in a situational drill. But hey, at least they were throwing them to teammates!

“The pass game was hit and miss,” Norvell said. “All in all it’s been a great spring in our development there. … Tonight wasn’t the best night of what we’ve done this spring, but there’s a lot of factors that go into it.”

Rodemaker did have probably the nicest pass of the day during the final portion of the spring game (the one with celebrity coaches), where he rolled to his right and found Kentron Poitier on a perfect 11-yard strike in the end zone.

Rodemaker finished 5 of 11 for 64 yards.

As for Travis? He was fine. Nothing spectacular. Completed 7 of 13 passes for 71 yards. And the offense as a whole managed to convert just 4 of 18 attempts on third down. So, you know, not great. Not what you hoped to see.

But it was a spring game. You’re not playing LSU tomorrow. And you had a lot of mixing and matching going on up front and out wide.

As for guys who stood out?

Obviously, defensive end Jared Verse. He was credited with two sacks and another quarterback hurry. He also blocked a 50-yard field goal attempt that would have been returned for a 55-yard touchdown by Greedy Vance in a real game.

On offense, the transfer that opened the most eyes was running back Trey Benson. The former Oregon Duck had 77 yards on seven carries. He showed off his power and his speed in those seven carries, and he also had a really impressive shake of a defender in the backfield to avoid a negative play and turn it into a positive one.

He looked like the real deal.

And then lastly, another transfer from Oregon, Mycah Pittman.

It’s not that he had a big game receiving. Because, frankly, no one did.

But there was a play in the second quarter where he showed a bit of what we’ve been seeing for the last month. He took a sweep around left end from the 4-yard line, cut back inside and then essentially bullied his way — through multiple tacklers — into the end zone for a touchdown.

That competitiveness, that physicality, that mindset, is what’s been missing a lot in that wide receiver room. It was just one play. And it was a run. Not a catch. But man, it was an illustration of a kid that wouldn’t be denied, and who more than anything else wants to go make a play.

Maybe he’ll make a lot of them this year. He certainly believes he will.

All in all, I thought the defense won the day. I think this defense has a chance to be much improved. Truly. It might end up being a good unit.

As for the offense? After essentially a whole spring and a Garnet & Gold game? I’m still not sure.
