Google Pixel Fold case model shows off hinge and bezel

After many false starts, the Google Pixel Fold finally seems to be on its way, and now a case model of the device gives us some further insight into what the physical hardware, hinge, and inner display will bring to the table.

YouTuber Dave2D obtained what appears to be a case model of the Google Pixel Fold, which he claims to be “dimensionally accurate” to the actual device Google has in the works. While this model is void of any actual smartphone hardware, the design and shape do line up with previous leaks.

The case model here shows a device that is remarkably thin at 5.7mm, 0.6mm thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold 4 when it is unfolded. We also get a good look at the device in hand when it is closed, confirming that the screen will be wider than Samsung’s Fold devices, as we showed in some previous mock-ups based on dimensions.

Related: Google’s Pixel Fold is going to be a bigger Oppo Find N2 – Should it?

A better look at the inside of the device also strongly suggests that Google’s device will have somewhat thick bezels, at least by modern standards, on the inner display. This allows the phone to have a camera that is not embedded in the display using a cutout or underdisplay technology. The bezels were measured at around 5-6mm. A mock-up of what the device looks like with those supposed bezels can be seen below.

The video also gives a look at the hinge, seemingly confirming that Google’s foldable won’t have a gap like Samsung’s devices do today, instead closing flush. This implies that Google will be using a “waterdrop” style hinge, similar to the Oppo Find N2, wherein the display recedes into the hinge slightly when the phone is closed up. Samsung is rumored to be moving to a similar design on the Galaxy Z Fold 5 to help lessen the visible display crease.

Dave2D says he has been told that the Pixel Fold will have a hinge similar to the Oppo Find N series.

The video goes on to point out that the speakers are positioned at the top left and bottom right of the two sides, which might lead to better stereo sound in either orientation. Samsung’s foldables position speakers at the top and bottom of the left side of the device (when unfolded), while Oppo positions its speakers at the bottom of both halves.

Galaxy Z Fold 5 could get a major camera boost, built-in S Pen slot

Last updated: January 16th, 2023 at 06:04 UTC+01:00

There is some spicy news for an upcoming Samsung smartphone. No, it isn’t the soon-to-be-launching Galaxy S23 series, which is all set to debut on February 1. The rumors are about the Galaxy Z Fold 5, which is expected to launch in the second half of 2023. Going by the rumor, the Galaxy Z Fold 5, could come with a 108MP primary rear camera.

According to a new report by the Vietnamese publication The Pixel, Samsung might ditch the 50MP camera for the 108MP primary camera, which is currently found on the Galaxy S22 Ultra. This, in turn, would make the device a bit heavier, and it will weigh around 275 grams (which is a little hard to believe). For comparison’s sake, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 weighs 263 grams.

Galaxy Z Fold 5 rumored to get a 108MP main camera and 64MP telephoto camera

This increase in weight will be partly because of the new 108MP camera that the rumors are leaning towards. This is great news (although it isn’t anything concrete, and is just a rumor), especially since foldable phones are often criticized for their less-than-stellar camera performance. Not that they are bad by any means, they just aren’t at the level of the premium slab phones but are priced higher than them.

Not only the Galaxy Z Fold 5 main camera but the telephoto camera is also rumored to get a boost. As per reports, the main 108MP snapper will be accompanied by a 64MP camera with 2x optical zoom and a 12MP ultrawide shooter on the Galaxy Z Fold 5. But one should take this piece of information with a pinch of salt since Samsung upgraded the cameras on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 last year. The company’s track record indicates that we shouldn’t expect a major camera revision two years in a row.

Other details about the Galaxy Z Fold 5 include that the phone will come with a dedicated slot for the S-Pen, and is implementing a new hinge design to decrease the screen crease and let the phone fold completely flat.

Galaxy Z Fold 5 could fix huge design flaw with Samsung’s foldables

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is arguably the best foldable smartphone released in 2022, as it offers a great balance of build quality, cameras, software, and battery life. But that doesn’t mean there’s no room for improvement. The company needs to fix a design flaw that can bring it closer to the recently released foldable phones from Chinese firms, and it is doing just that with the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

According to a report from the Korean publication Naver, Samsung has used a waterdrop-shaped hinge in the Galaxy Z Fold 5. It means that the South Korean firm’s next flagship foldable smartphone will be able to fold completely flat, with no gap between the two halves of the phone when it’s folded. Moreover, the Galaxy Z Fold 5’s inner screen will have a smoother and less visible crease. This is something that Galaxy Z Fold fans have been asking for at least a couple of years now.

However, unlike rival Chinese smartphone firms, Samsung will not leave out the IPX8 rating for water resistance. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 will be close to perfect in design and experience, featuring a perfectly flat folding design and water resistance. The only thing stopping it from being perfect would be the lack of dust resistance.

The report states that Samsung is calling its new hinge design ‘dumbbell,’ and the company patented this design back in 2016. However, it didn’t bring the design for reasons unknown (probably due to lack of IPX8 rating?). Thanks to this new dumbbell-shaped hinge, it is reported that the durability of the screen has improved as well, and it will be able to withstand more folding and unfolding actions over its lifetime.

Samsung unveils Flex Hybrid OLED screen that can fold and slide

Samsung, the pioneer of mobile OLED displays, has unveiled its latest creation: Flex Hybrid OLED. It is an OLED panel designed for futuristic devices like smartphones, tablets, and laptops that can fold and slide. This panel can be folded from one side and expanded (by sliding) from the other, converting a compact device into a larger one.

The 10.5-inch Flex Hybrid OLED screen from Samsung Display has a 4:3 aspect ratio, and it can be slid open from one side to turn it into a 12.4-inch screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio. When it is completely open, it can be a great display to watch videos with inky blacks, almost perfect viewing angles, and high brightness. Samsung will showcase this OLED panel at CES 2023 in Las Vegas, USA.

Samsung Display will also showcase two more OLED panels that can be slid open. The Flex Slidable Solo is a 14-inch OLED panel that can turn into a 17.3-inch screen when it is slid open from one side. The Flex Slidable Duet is an OLED panel that extends from two sides to convert a 14-inch screen into a 17.3-inch one. These panels were teased in September 2022 at Intel Innovation 2022. Now, they are making their first public appearance at CES 2023.

These new OLED panels will make it possible to create advanced compact devices that can still pack large displays, turning mobile devices into proper professional ones when needed. We don’t expect devices using these displays to launch anytime soon. Samsung MX (Samsung’s mobile phone arm) is rumored to be developing a tablet that can fold twice.

Samsung starts testing One UI 5.1 on the Galaxy Z Fold 4

Last updated: January 3rd, 2023 at 07:19 UTC+01:00

Samsung is gearing up to launch its 2023 flagship series, the Galaxy S23, early next month. The Galaxy S23 series will launch with Android 13-based One UI 5.1 out of the box. In line with it, Samsung has started the internal testing of One UI 5.1 for the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Launched in August 2022, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 came with Android 12L with One UI 4.1.1 out of the box and received the Android 13 update a few weeks ago.

The premium foldable from Samsung is currently running Android 13 with One UI 5.0. Well, this isn’t the first news about the One UI 5.1 internal testing that is underway. A few days ago, we reported that Samsung is also internally testing One UI 5.1 firmware for the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra with firmware version S90xEXXU2CVL7.

And going by Samsung’s usual strategy, One UI 5.1 would land on the Galaxy S22 series a few days after the official launch of the Galaxy S23 lineup. Speaking of the One UI 5.1 test firmware for the Galaxy Z Fold 4, it carries the version number F936NKSU1CVLH. The fourth letter from last in the version number is ‘C,’ which denotes the firmware being the third major One UI update for the Galaxy Z Fold 4. To make sense of it, the current Android 13 firmware has the alphabet ‘B.’

As per reports, while there isn’t much clarity on what One UI 5.1 will offer, the company has hinted at a few things. Samsung has reserved some lock screen customization options, battery widgets, and more for One UI 5.1. Android 13’s Material You design language was not properly adopted by Samsung with One UI 5.0, and chances are that One UI 5.1 will bring meaningful enhancements and support for Material You.
