Fortnite players to get Chrome Punk skin for free, check your eligibility

FortniteMares 2022 is finally here and has introduced several new items, game modes, and cosmetics for players to celebrate the Halloween season. From eliminating zombies across the map to escaping them on a Witch’s Broom Mythic, players have long been waiting for what is expected to be a thrilling experience.

Now that the update is finally here, it has also brought several cosmetic collaborations ranging from Rick and Morty’s Summer and Mr. Meeseeks to Evil Dead’s Ash Williams. Additionally, several other survey skins and concept royale skins could also make their way onto the island.

However, for players who are unable to purchase outfits in the item shop due to various reasons, Fortnite has something for everyone in their bag of treats. Players can now get their hands on free outfits and cosmetics if they complete a certain amount of quests during FortniteMares 2022. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

Epic Games recently added new Chrome Punk quests to the game files with the latest Halloween update. As stated, players will have three different tiers of quests to complete before they get their hands on a Chromeseed Backbling, Graveyard Rave loading screen, and Chrome Punk outfit for free.

Here are all the descriptions of the quests and their rewards:

  • Earn 10 Account Levels: Chromeseed Backbling
  • Earn 25 Account Levels: Graveyard Rave Loading Screen
  • Earn 50 Accounts Levels: Chrome Punk Skin

This means players will need to increase their account levels by completing weekly, daily, milestones, and special FortniteMares 2022 quests from the Quest tab. However, players should bear in mind that the account level is different from their XP level, which can be checked by navigating to the Career tab in the game menu.

As of now, there is no end date for the quests, but Epic may make an announcement at a later date. Additionally, Chrome Punk has also been added as an NPC on the map and can be seen roaming the island. The official description for them in the Characters tab reads as follows:

“Hacking and carving a path to victory. Chrome Punk is a renowned pioneer in the underground ‘gourd-core’ music scene. His attitude is unmatched except by his brother, Punk, with whom he had a falling out.”

A few years ago, a similar skin called Punk was released in the item shop. It had a similar structure to that of Chrome Punk and was deemed by the community as above average at best. However, his pickaxe from the set Bash Burner was considered pay-to-win due to its faster swing rate, and was later nerfed by Epic.

FortniteMares 2022 begins today and players will be able to experience horror on the island until November 1 at 2 am ET, when it ends.

Where to Get Updated COVID Booster, Eligibility, Possible Side Effects and More – NBC Chicago

For the vast majority of the pandemic, up until early September, COVID-19 vaccines targeted the original coronavirus strain, even as wildly different mutants emerged. Vaccines continued to show effective protection, even regarding different strains, and now, experts hope the newest shots can go even further and provide additional protection.

Known as “bivalent” vaccines, the updated doses contain half the original vaccine recipe and half protection against the newest omicron versions, BA.4 and BA.5.

Since the start of the month, around 1.5% of those eligible to receive an updated booster have done so – a figure one infectious disease specialist called “demoralizing.”

“I would expect a much higher proportion of Americans to have gotten the booster by this point,” Dr. Scott Roberts with Yale Medicine told NBC News.

As the fall season begins and cooler weather settles in, health officials are urging boosters in an effort to prevent another possible surge.

““Colder weather is coming and residents are starting to move indoors, which is traditionally when we see respiratory virus rates rise. Please don’t wait to get vaccinated this year. Do it now to protect yourself, your family, and our whole city,” Dr. Allison Arwady, commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health, said in a news release Friday.

If you’re planning to get the latest shot or are unsure, here’s what you need to know, including possible side effects, where shots are being offered and who should receive them.

What Are the Possible Side Effects?

Side effects caused by the boosters may not be that different from your last dose.

“We just don’t have any data on this [yet], essentially giving two vaccines in one shot — but biologically, I just wouldn’t expect the side effects, severity or the safety profile of the shots to be different from the current mRNA vaccines and boosters,” Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and member of an independent advisory group to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, told CNBC’s Make It.

The Food and Drug Administration states that those who receive the bivalent vaccine “may experience side effects commonly reported by individuals who receive authorized or approved monovalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccines.”

Among the side effects study participants reported were:

  • pain, redness or swelling where the shot was administered
  • fatigue
  • headache
  • muscle pain
  • join pain
  • chills
  • swelling of the lymph nodes in the arm where the shot was given
  • nausea or vomiting
  • fever

The side effects were similar for both Moderna and Pfizer’s vaccines and largely mirror expected side effects for earlier doses.

The CDC stated that side effects with the third shot were also “similar to that of the two-dose series.”

The most common symptoms then included fatigue and pain at the injection site, but “most symptoms were mild to moderate.”

As with previous doses of the vaccine, the CDC notes that, “serious side effects are rare, but may occur.”

Who is Eligible?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only those who have completed a full COVID vaccine series — which consists of either two Moderna or Pfizer shots, or one Johnson & Johnson shot — are eligible. Additionally, the shots have certain age restrictions, which are listed below:

  • Individuals 18 and older are eligible to receive either Pfizer’s or Moderna’s updated COVID booster shot
  • Only Pfizer booster doses can be administered to those aged 12 through 17
  • While those younger than 18 years old are eligible for the new COVID booster, they aren’t eligible for the Moderna dose

Where Can I Go to Get the Updated Booster?

Walgreens and CVS are among those offering updated booster shots, along with several other retail chains. Walgreens encourages anyone eligible to schedule an appointment via the Walgreens app, by calling 1-800-WALGREENS or going online. Walk-ins are permitted, though appointments are preferred.

CVS, too, encourages those interested to schedule appointments online, according to a news release about the rollout earlier this month. At the time, CVS stated initial supply of the updated boosters was limited.

Will Children Be Eligible Soon?

Moderna announced Friday it asked the FDA to authorize its booster for children, explaining it filed two separate authorization requests – one for those 12 to 17 years old and another for kids age 6 to 11.

This week, the CDC said it anticipates recommending updated boosters for kids between early and mid-October. Pfizer has informed a CDC advisory committee that it plans to ask the FDA to authorize boosters for children age 5 to 11 in early October.

The new COVID vaccines designed to specifically target the omicron variant and its highly contagious subvariants come with plenty of questions, including some from those wondering if they can still get the updated booster even if they already had a booster vaccine?

Can You Mix and Match Your Booster Shot?

While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not recommend mixing products for your primary series doses, boosters can be mixed.

Here’s the CDC guidance on mixing and matching for boosters, based on which shots you have already received.

  • People ages 18 years and older may get a different product for a booster than they got for their primary series, as long as it’s Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna.
  • Teens ages 12-17 years may get a different product for a booster than they got for their primary series, as long as it’s Pfizer-BioNTech.
  • Children ages 5 through 11 years who got a Pfizer-BioNTech primary series must also get Pfizer-BioNTech for a booster.
  • People ages 12 years and older may only get the updated (bivalent) mRNA (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna) booster. They can no longer get an original (monovalent) mRNA booster.
  • Novavax is not authorized for use as a booster dose at this time.

City Opens Second Dose Monkeypox Vaccine Eligibility to 28-Day Interval

Second dose appointments will be open to anyone who received their first dose at least 28 days ago

The city will also expand eligibility to people who are under 18 and who meet all other eligibility criteria

On Friday, September 16, over 50,000 new first and second dose appointments will be made available at 4 p.m.

September 15, 2022 — The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene today announced that, starting tomorrow, Friday, September 16, at 4 p.m., anyone who received their first doses of monkeypox vaccine at least 28 days ago can schedule a second dose appointment. The City is also expanding eligibility for vaccinations to people who are under 18 and meet all other criteria. Also, tomorrow, over 50,000 new appointments will be made available, for dates between September 17 and October 6.

“We feel confident that we now have enough supply of vaccine to meet current demand, and are comfortable lowering the window of time between first and second doses,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan. “We know that this provides much deserved peace of mind to New Yorkers who have bravely faced this outbreak. Over these many months, they have adapted to the vaccine supply challenges and have successfully slowed the spread of this virus. We are especially grateful to the affected community, who stepped up to protect themselves and one another, as well as partner organizations who worked tirelessly to share information.”

On September 1, the City announced its initial second dose strategy to provide second doses 10 weeks after the first dose. This policy was put in place to ensure adequate supply and capacity for administration of vaccines to all eligible New Yorkers who needed their first and second doses. Now that there is enough vaccine supply to meet the current demand for first doses, the City is making second doses available 28 days after the first dose, as indicated in the FDA prescribing label. Completing the series with a second dose administered any time after 28 days is expected to boost the immune protection from the vaccine.

People who had first doses between July 24 and September 8 will receive notifications to schedule a second dose appointment.

Additionally, the new eligibility to New Yorkers under the age of 18 years old will ensure that age is less of a barrier to New Yorkers who need vaccination. With the expanded eligibility, vaccine is now open to people who meet all of the following conditions:

  • People who have had multiple or anonymous sex partners in the last 14 days and identify as at least one of the following:
    • Gay, bisexual, or other man (cisgender or transgender) who has sex with cis or transgender men or transgender women.
    • Transgender, gender non-conforming, or gender non-binary (regardless of the gender of your sex partners).
    • Sex workers and anyone engaging in survival sex or any other types of transactional sex (including sex in exchange for money, food, shelter or other goods) of any sexual orientation or gender identity.

Minors must have parental, guardian or legal custodian consent, unless the minor is part of a group to whom the law gives the right to consent to their own care, such as married minors, minors who are parents or pregnant, and minors in the military. For people 16 or 17 years of age, such consent should be provided either in person or by phone, at the time of the vaccine appointment. For minors 15 years of age or younger, an adult caregiver must accompany the minor. The parent or guardian must still provide consent by phone at the time of the appointment or by written statement.

Florida A&M college football expects to play season opener at North Carolina despite eligibility issues

Florida A&M’s football season opener at North Carolina on Saturday is expected to be played despite 20 Rattlers players who are ineligible or haven’t cleared their paperwork to transfer.

A FAMU spokesman confirmed to ESPN on Friday that the team expects to play.

North Carolina coach Mack Brown and Tar Heels school officials also told ESPN they expect Saturday’s game to proceed. The game is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. ET (ACC Network).

As of 2:15 p.m. ET, the FAMU team hadn’t boarded a flight to Chapel Hill for the game.

Florida A&M coach Willie Simmons told ABC27 in Tallahassee that there were 20 ineligible players due to academics or eligibility after transferring. A school spokesman told ESPN the team will have eight eligible offensive linemen.

Florida A&M is scheduled to receive a $450,000 guarantee for playing the game, which is part of a celebration of Historically Black Colleges and Universities this week on the UNC campus.

“They’ve got some eligibility issues,” a UNC source told ESPN before the final decision was made. “You can’t get on a plane if you’re not certified. They’re meeting right now.

“I think they’re still coming. We have not been told that they’re not coming. We have been told by the AD and president that they’re still coming.”

Former 5-star recruit Quinn Ewers will join Texas football as transfer QB, have four years of eligibility

Former five-star recruit Quinn Ewers will transfer to Texas, the former Ohio State quarterback posted on social media Sunday night.

Ewers spent one season with the Buckeyes but entered the transfer portal Dec. 3, and is now closing a loop on what was a unique journey to get to this point, even for recruiting standards.

He was ranked as a five-star quarterback, the No. 1 signal caller in the 2022 class, and originally committed to Texas in high school. Once the Longhorns fired coach Tom Herman, Ewers backed off his commitment and eventually flipped to Ohio State.

He then reclassified to the 2021 class to enroll a year early at Ohio State, and to capitalize on a few name, image and likeness deals that were presented to him as a high schooler. The state of Texas prohibits high school prospects from profiting off of their name, image and likeness, so Ewers left high school and joined the Buckeyes in August.

Promptly after joining Ohio State, Ewers signed an NIL contract for $1.4 million over three years with GT Sports Marketing for autographs and was negotiated by Ewers’ agents at Sportstars and Rubicon. He landed other NIL deals along with his big contract, including one contract with a local car dealership.

Ewers is originally from Southlake, Texas, and played for Carroll High School, where he threw for 4,003 yards, 45 touchdowns and three interceptions in the 2019 season. His 2020 season was cut short to only four games, but Ewers still had 1,221 yards passing, 15 touchdown passes and two interceptions.

Despite enrolling a year early at Ohio State, he didn’t throw a pass for the Buckeyes this season as redshirt freshman C.J. Stroud won the starting job and finished as a Heisman Trophy finalist.

Ewers will join Texas with four years of eligibility remaining and will step into a situation where he will be able to compete right away for the starting job, with the Longhorns in Year 2 of Steve Sarkisian’s tenure.

Texas went 5-7 this season, finishing seventh in the Big 12, and is not headed a bowl game.

Older adults and third stimulus checks: Eligibility rules and what they mean for you

Will you get a third stimulus check? At least one rule change could affect older adults and retirees.

Sarah Tew/CNET

The IRS is in the middle of sending the next wave of third stimulus payments to those who are eligible for the payment. And if you’re age 65 or older, you receive Social Security benefits or you’re a veteran, you will likely receive a $1,400 check (track your payment here). It may be different, however, for individuals with “high” income levels from investments or other sources.

The total amount of this third check also depends on how many dependents you’re claiming this year (if any), or if you’re claimed as a dependent on someone else’s taxes. Tax season may also be a deciding factor this time if you filed a tax return in early 2021 and it’s already been processed by the IRS.

We’ll explain everything that could affect your third stimulus payment — from filing your federal taxes this year to your adjusted gross income, pension and Social Security benefits, as well as if someone counts you as an adult dependent on their taxes. Also, if you’re still missing money from the first or second checks, you’ll need to claim it as a Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 taxes, even if you don’t usually file them. This story has been updated recently.

Who does the IRS categorize as an older adult?

Anyone aged 65 or older at the end of 2020 is considered a senior adult on their taxes that year and beyond. (If you have questions about citizenship requirements, see more below.) The IRS notes you are considered age 65 on the day before your 65th birthday.

How do I know if I’m eligible for a third stimulus payment?

For the first and second stimulus checks, whether you were eligible for any stimulus money (and if you were, how much money you could receive) depended on whether you were considered a dependent and the amount of your AGI from your federal tax filing. Your AGI is your gross income minus any eligible adjustments that you may qualify for.  Since the tax deadline has been extended to May 17, the IRS is likely to use your 2019 tax return, if you file taxes.

(Find out everything you need to know about how your taxes affect your stimulus payment here.)

If you have a pension or investments that are taxable, those will affect your AGI, and therefore your eligibility for a stimulus check. The same is true for interest from a bank account. Interest from tax-exempt bonds isn’t included in your AGI, however, so it wouldn’t affect your stimulus payment eligibility.

For the third stimulus check, some of the eligibility rules changed in the final version of the bill — read on for more, and use our third stimulus check calculator to see if you qualify based on income limits. Here are stimulus calculators for the first and second checks, respectively.

Stimulus check 3: How much money you’ll get

2:32

If I’m eligible for a third payment, how much money will I get?

There are several ways that qualifications change with a third stimulus check. The new law includes a payment of up to $1,400 for all dependents, no matter their age, to be added on to the household’s total. That means if you support an adult dependent — a college student, for example — you may be able to get a larger stimulus payment this round.

The expansion will provide money to households on behalf of an estimated 13.5 million adult dependents, according to the People’s Policy Project.

The new bill also loops in families with “mixed-status” citizenship, where members have different immigration statuses. Both of these groups were left out of the first and second stimulus payments.

One thing to note: The third check is more “targeted.” That means single filers who earn less than $75,000 will be eligible for the full $1,400. But those who earn $80,000 or more per year will not be eligible to receive a third payment at all. There are other ways some households can get more money with the next stimulus payment

SSI or SSDI beneficiaries: Are you eligible for the third stimulus check?

If you’re over age 65 and a recipient of Supplemental Security Income or Social Security Disability Insurance, you were eligible for a first and second stimulus check, and will be eligible for a third. This also includes many VA recipients and Retired Railroad Workers.

Social Security recipients are now getting their stimulus checks, the IRS said, but those receiving VA benefits may have a few weeks to go.

Find out everything else you need to know about how SSI and SSDI impact stimulus checks here

If you count as someone else’s dependent, you may be eligible for stimulus money in the potential third round of checks.

Angela Lang/CNET

What’s a gross income, and where can I find mine?

Your gross income (again, this differs from your AGI) includes income from selling your main home and gains (but not losses) reported on Form 8949 or Schedule D and from sources outside the US.

Your gross income doesn’t include any Social Security benefits unless:

  • You’re married but filing separately and lived with your spouse at some point in 2019.
  • Half your Social Security benefits plus your other gross income and any tax-exempt interest is more than $25,000 filing single (or $32,000 if married, filing jointly).

If either of those is the case for you, you can check out the Instructions for Forms 1040 and 1040-SR or Pub. 915, Social Security and Equivalent Railroad Retirement Benefits to figure the taxable part of Social Security benefits you must include in gross income.

Can I get a stimulus payment if someone claims me as an adult dependent on their tax return?

Some older people may count as a dependent on someone else’s taxes, called a “qualifying relative.” For example, you may live with your children. In terms of stimulus check qualifications, the main tax filer would’ve had to claim you as a dependent on their tax form 1040.

A qualifying relative can be any age. To be counted as a qualifying relative on someone’s tax return, the person must meet four criteria. They…

  • Don’t count as a qualifying child dependent.
  • Live with the family member all year as a member of the household, or count as a relative who doesn’t have to live with the family member all year (such as a parent or grandparent, a stepparent or a sibling).
  • Must have a gross income for the year of less than $4,200.
  • Must have more than half of their support during the year come from the family member.

If you were a dependent on someone else’s taxes and were over the age of 16, you weren’t qualified for any stimulus money at all in the first or second round of stimulus checks. The new law, however, allows dependents of all ages to be eligible to add up to $1,400 to the household’s total payment

There are a few reasons why some older adults may not have gotten a first or second stimulus check.

Sarah Tew/CNET

I’m a nonfiler. Do I have to file taxes this year to receive my stimulus money?

nonfiler is a person who isn’t required to pay taxes to the IRS during tax season. The requirement to file a tax return depends on your gross income, which is all income you receive in the form of money, goods, property and services that aren’t tax-exempt (more below).

People who are considered nonfilers don’t need to do anything to receive a third stimulus check, according to the IRS. However, if you’re claiming missing stimulus money in a Recovery Rebate Credit, even nonfilers will have to file a tax return this year. You may be able to use a special form and file for free. You will, however, need some specific information.

If you’re age 65 or older, you should file taxes under the following circumstances:

  • Single filer with at least $13,850 in gross income.
  • Head of household with at least $20,000 in gross income.
  • Married filing jointly (if one spouse is 65 or older, $25,700 in gross income; if both spouses are 65 or older, $27,000 in gross income).
  • Married filing separately (any age).
  • Qualifying widow(er) age 65 or older with at least $25,700 in gross income.

In the 2019 tax year, the IRS introduced Form 1040-SR, US Tax Return for Seniors. This form is basically the same as Form 1040, but has larger text and some helpful information for older taxpayers.

I’m not a US citizen, but I pay taxes. Can I get a third stimulus check?

Under the December stimulus bill, non-US citizens, including those who pay taxes, weren’t eligible to receive the $600 payment, unlike with the first round of checks. Under the CARES Act of March 2020, all US citizens and non-US citizens with a Social Security number who live and work in America were eligible to receive stimulus payments. That included people the IRS refers to as “resident aliens,” green card holders and workers using visas such as H-1B and H-2A.

If your citizenship status has changed since you first got a Social Security number, you may have to update the IRS’ records to get your check. US citizens living abroad were also eligible for a first payment.

For the third payment, the new law includes checks for “mixed-status” citizenship families — families with members with different immigration statuses — who were left out of the first two checks.

What counts as income? That depends on your personal circumstances.

Angela Lang/CNET

I never got the money I was owed from the first or second stimulus payments. Can I claim it on my taxes?

Now that it’s tax season, if you haven’t received your first or second check by now, you’ll likely need to claim a missing payment using the Recovery Rebate Credit — that includes people who don’t usually file taxes, too.

If you use the Recovery Rebate Credit, your stimulus allotment will either be bundled with your tax refund or you’ll pay less tax. We recommend filing your taxes as early as possible (here’s why) and registering your bank account for direct deposit with the IRS.

I’m over 65 and have dependents. What if I never got a payment for them with the first two payments?

If you’re age 65 or older and have a child dependent age 16 or younger who qualified for an extra $500 under the CARES Act, or an extra $600 under the December stimulus bill, you’ll have to claim your stimulus payment on behalf of eligible dependents as a Recovery Rebate Credit.

For more, check out what we know so far about a third stimulus check and when the IRS might send your new payment out. Here’s what we know about the possibility of a fourth stimulus check.
