Foot-long dwarf boa found in Ecuadorian Amazon

CNN
 —

Scientists have identified a tiny new species of dwarf boa living in the Ecuadorian Amazon that even a snake hater could love: These small reptiles are just a foot long.

Alex Bentley, research coordinator of the Sumak Kawsay In Situ field station in the eastern foothills of the Andes, stumbled across a small, curled up snake in a patch of cloud forest, an upland forest where clouds filter through the treetops.

He sent a photo of the snake to colleagues, including Omar Entiauspe-Neto, a graduate student at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and Butantan Institute in Brazil.

“We were immediately surprised, because it shouldn’t be there,” said Entiauspe-Neto, the corresponding author of the paper describing the species in the European Journal of Taxonomy.

Other dwarf boas have been identified elsewhere in South America and the West Indies, but none had ever been found in the region where Bentley spotted this one. The closest known match in Ecuador lives west of the Andes, and, according to Entiauspe-Neto, it looks “radically different” from the specimen in Bentley’s photo.

While the snake didn’t match any known species of dwarf boas, it had a lot in common with a specimen in the Ecuadorian Museum of Natural Sciences collected several years ago.

“We’re usually afraid to describe new species based on only a single one, because there’s a chance that there might be some sort of variation,” Entiauspe-Neto said. “Once we had those two specimens, we were fairly sure they were a new species.”

By comparing both the physical characteristics and genetic sequences of the mystery snakes with known species, the researchers determined that they’d found an animal new to science. They named it Tropidophis cacuangoae in honor of Dolores Cacuango, an Indigenous activist who championed women’s rights and founded Ecuador’s first bilingual schools with lessons in Spanish and the Indigenous language Quechua.

Like its fellow dwarf boas, T. cacuangoae is distantly related to the bigger boa constrictor, but they have key traits in common.

They both have thickset bodies, and their skeletons bear vestigial hip bones, relics of snakes’ ancient legged ancestors. And instead of being armed with venom, they squeeze their prey to death, blocking blood flow and causing cardiac arrest.

While 10-foot-long boa constrictors go after animals as big as wild pigs, dwarf boas have diets that largely consist of small lizards. And since they don’t have size on their side like true boa constrictors, dwarf boas have evolved a strange defense mechanism: When threatened, they curl into a ball and bleed out of their eyes.

This behavior, also seen in horned lizards, might appear more gross than threatening, but Entiauspe-Neto suspects the behavior is part of a bigger constellation of death feigning found throughout the animal kingdom.

“Most predators tend to feed on living prey,” he said. If a predator such as an eagle sees a dwarf boa coiled up and bleeding from its eyes, “the predator is very likely to think that the snake might be either sick or dying, so therefore it will not feed on it” to avoid catching whatever made the snake seem ill.

However, dwarf boas face far bigger threats than predators: The newly identified species may already be endangered due to habitat loss. “It has a fairly small range,” Entiauspe-Neto said. “So while it still needs to be formally evaluated by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), I think it might be threatened with extinction.”

Thaís Guedes, a researcher at the State University of Campinas in Brazil who was not involved with the study, praised the work. “I am always happy when I see a new species of snake being introduced to the world,” Guedes said.

Honoring activist Cacuango in the naming of the species is also important, she said, since Indigenous peoples play a key role in conservation.

World Cup 2022 live updates: Senegal takes lead over Ecuador on PK

The 2022 FIFA World Cup continues Tuesday with Group A taking center stage early, as Ecuador (1-1-0) takes on Senegal (1-0-1) at Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar, and we’ve got you covered with all the action!

You can watch this game on FS1 and every match of the tournament on the FOX Sports family of networks — the tournament’s official English-language broadcast partner in the U.S. — and the FOX Sports app and FOXSports.com. You can also stream full-match replays for free on Tubi.

Here are the top plays!

Ecuador vs. Senegal

Setting the stage

Ecuador is aiming to secure its place in the knockout stage for only the second time in World Cup history. All it will take is a tie or a win on Tuesday. On the other side, Senegal is searching for a much-needed win as the competition heats up. It can only enter the knockout stage if it wins or if it draws plus the Netherlands gets upset by Qatar in a game running simultaneously on FOX.

Previewing Ecuador-Senegal

The “World Cup Now” crew gave their keys and which players they’re watching in Tuesday’s match, which will send one team to the knockout stage and the other home.

3′ – Senegal nearly gets off to a great start

Pape Gueye found Idrissa Gueye on a cross in the middle of the box, but Gueye’s shot missed right.

4′ – Senegal’s energy is already high

In essentially a must-win match, Senegal’s fans are loud and proud in hopes of lifting the team to victory.

8′ – Senegal keeps getting chances

Boulaye Dia got an opportunity on a through pass while running into the box. However, his shot went wide left and Senegal is still looking to get on the board.

30′ – Senegal fans continue to bring the energy

Senegal’s fans know its do-or-die as they continue to chant and dance all game.

42′ – Senegal awarded a penalty kick

Ismaïla Sarr got fouled by an Ecuadorian player while chasing a ball in the opposing box, drawing a penalty kick to give Senegal its best scoring chance of the match.

44′ – Senegal scores!

Sarr capitalized on the penalty kick to give Senegal a 1-0 lead. If the result holds, Senegal would advance to the knockout stage and Ecuador would go home. With the Netherlands leading Qatar at halftime, Ecuador would need at least a draw to move on.

Qatar vs. Senegal, U.S. vs. England, Netherlands vs. Ecuador

The second round of the 2022 World Cup group stage games begin on Friday. Did you hear that the USMNT is playing?

Of course, you did. The United States is a significant underdog to England after the Three Lions demolished Iran to open their World Cup campaign. A loss likely dooms the United States’ chances of advancing. A result is imperative. Can they get it?

8 a.m. ET Friday, FS1

It’s hard to have much confidence in Qatar after what we saw on Sunday. Ecuador dominated the match and thoroughly deserved the win. Senegal is already without Sadio Mane and looks set to be without midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate. He’s a big part of Senegal’s midfield. But even without Mane and Kouyate, Senegal should have enough to eliminate the Qataris from knockout round contention and set up a pivotal match with Ecuador on Tuesday.

11 a.m. ET Friday, Fox

It took the Dutch over 80 minutes to score a goal against Senegal and then added a second for good measure. Given the way the first round of group matches played out, both of these teams could be content to play it out for a tie and stay tied for first and in control of their own paths to the knockout stage. We’ll go with the draw. But if you’re feeling bold, a draw and under parlay could be worth a risk.

2 p.m. ET Friday, Fox

Bet this game with your head, not your heart. England is a deserved favorite at -175 after its performance against Iran. If you want to bet the U.S., we recommend taking a combo bet of a U.S. win and a tie at +135. Keep in mind that a tie is a very good result for the USMNT, especially if Wales doesn’t beat Iran. As you can see from the odds, England is the safer bet here and would effectively end the United States’ chances of advancing. If you want to be optimistic, hedge with that combo bet rather than going with one result.

Headless bodies and deadly bombs: cartel violence escalates in Ecuador | Ecuador

The week began with the discovery of two headless bodies, left dangling from a pedestrian bridge. Then prison guards were taken hostage by inmates, nine car bombs detonated in two coastal cities and five police officers were shot dead.

The string of horrifying attacks across Ecuador this week would once have been unthinkable, but this kind of bloodletting is now becoming almost routine in the Andean country, as gang violence escalates to levels never seen before.

Late on Tuesday, President Guillermo Lasso announced a 9pm curfew under a new state of emergency in the affected Guayas and Esmeraldas regions. He called the violent incidents “a declaration of open war” and said he was “prepared to act harshly”.

He added that soldiers and police had raided jails and seized weapons, ammunition, explosives and phones.

Analysts say criminal gangs emboldened by lucrative links to Mexican drug cartels are using terror tactics to intimidate the authorities and civilians as the country of nearly 18 million teeters on the edge of becoming a narco-state.

Ecuador’s interior minister Juan Zapata said the two officers shot dead on Tuesday “lost their lives at the hands of organized crime”. Two more officers were injured in a separate attack on a police station.

“This year has been very sad and tragic for the national police, said Zapata. “With these two cases we now have 61 police heroes fallen in the line of duty.”

The latest spate of attacks is believed to have come in response to the transfer of detainees from Guayaquil’s Litoral prison, the scene of the worst prison massacre in the country’s history last year, which left at least 119 dead.

The latest bloodshed comes just months after a deadly bomb attack killed at least five and injured 17 people in Guayaquil, marking an escalation of terror tactics against civilians, and prompting a fourth state of emergency in the violence-torn city.

“In certain areas, the state has been displaced,” said Col Mario Pazmiño, the former director of Ecuador’s military intelligence, referring to parts of Guayaquil and Ecuador’s Pacific coast. “We are talking about criminal rule with this new escalation in the level of violence.

More than 400 prison inmates have been killed – many burned alive or beheaded –since February 2021 in an explosive rise in murders as rival gangs fight for control of lucrative cocaine trafficking routes to the US and Europe.

Ecuador – which sits between Colombia and Peru, the world’s two largest cocaine-producing countries – is a strategic smuggling route due to its long Pacific coastline and large shipping and fishing fleets.

Analysts say the spike in violence started when local criminal gangs began vying to work with the rival Mexican Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation drug cartels.

During the first eight months of this year, there were 2,785 violent deaths in Ecuador, a 10-year record which has already exceeded the total number of murders in 2021, according to police figures. Around two-thirds of those deaths were in coastal regions.

The rate nearly doubled in 2021 to 14 per 100,000 inhabitants and reached 18 per 100,000 between January and October this year.

Luis, 42, a hydraulic parts dealer in Guayaquil, the coastal city which has been the epicentre of the violence, said he was afraid to leave his home because criminals hang out on his street corner.

“You can’t go out of the house in the evening. It’s really tough,” he said. “Every day there are more criminals, you don’t even want to catch a taxi,” he added.

He was also suspicious of the police, believing like many Ecuadorians that the institution had been penetrated by narco-trafficking.

As for the government’s response, he responded: “It’s really lukewarm. Trying to impose a curfew, [the criminals] will just laugh in your face.”
