NFL Playoffs: Philadelphia Eagles heading to Super Bowl with dominant victory over San Francisco 49ers

CNN
 —

The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 31-7, on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, to advance to Super Bowl LVII.

The Eagles scored on their first possession and didn’t look back in the rout of the 49ers.

The 49ers were momentarily left without rookie starting quarterback Brock Purdy after he suffered a right elbow injury in the first quarter, on a hit by Eagles linebacker Haason Reddick that forced a fumble. Josh Johnson, who is the fourth string quarterback for San Francisco, filled in for Purdy until the third quarter before being ruled out of the game with a concussion.

Playing on the injured elbow, Purdy re-entered the game but the 49ers offense struggled to tally any points.

Meanwhile, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia run-game, ran all over the 49ers defense, notching 148 rushing yards and scoring all four touchdowns on the ground. With his rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter, Hurts (15) passed Cameron Newton (14) for most rushing touchdown’s in a single season by a QB in NFL history, including playoffs, according to NFL Research.

The Eagles, who advance to the Super Bowl for the first time since winning it in the 2017-18 season, will face the winner of the AFC Championship between the Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs later Sunday.

Super Bowl LVII will take place at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona on February 12.

In the AFC, it’s the Bengals and Chiefs for the second straight season. Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes will look for revenge after last year’s crushing defeat at Arrowhead Stadium. Bengals’ quarterback Joe Burrow will look to replicate last year’s end result for his fourth straight win over Kansas City.

The Chiefs ended the regular season as the AFC’s No. 1 seed. They earned a week of rest in the Wild Card stage, took care of the Jaguars in the Divisional round, and are now exactly where they want to be.

The only problem is that their star quarterback isn’t 100% healthy.

Mahomes suffered a high ankle sprain in the Divisional round. There’s no doubt that he will persevere through the pain, but any issues with his mobility will impact his playmaking abilities.

Mahomes will have to get creative with how he moves the ball up the field. The pressure is also on the offensive linemen to keep Mahomes protected. If he’s left exposed, there’s increased risk of further injury.

While the Bengals are the away team and the lower seed, it would be incorrect to consider them the underdogs.

In the Divisional round, they upset the Bills and made it look easy. If that game is any indicator of how things will go this weekend, the Chiefs should be ready for a battle.

It’s also worth noting that history favors the Bengals. Burrow is 3-0 against Mahomes. And in all three games, Cincinnati was either tied or behind to start the fourth quarter.

Even if the Chiefs get ahead early, the Bengals have proven that they are not to be counted out until the final whistle. To top it all off, Burrow is an even better quarterback than the last time these two met in an AFC title game. His numbers have improved across the board, and he’s gained more experience playing at a high-level.

Ultimately, the Chiefs are an elite team with an MVP-caliber quarterback, injured or not. The Bengals are a young, talented team with history on their side. Only time will tell which team has what it takes to get to the next stage.

2023 national championship: Georgia, Stetson Bennett overpower TCU for most dominant victory of title game era

LOS ANGELES — No. 1 Georgia won the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship in record-setting fashion Monday night, overpowering No. 3 TCU in a gaudy 65-7 victory that marked the most dominant title-game performance in the sport’s history. The win, which featured the Bulldogs scoring the most points in any national title game since the start of the BCS in 1998, makes Georgia the first back-to-back national champions of the CFP era and first at all since Alabama in 2011-12.

The Bulldogs (15-0) were balanced on offense, scoring on every possession in the first half and 10 of 12 possessions overall (including the victory formation to end the game). They amassed a whopping 589 yards of offense (averaging 8.2 yards per play), while their defense held the Horned Frogs (13-2) to just 188 yards with three turnovers, five sacks and nine tackles for loss.

Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett IV was a shining star with 304 yards and six total touchdowns (four passing, two rushing). He took some individual records with him as he was celebrated by a curtain call early in the fourth quarter. Bennett tied LSU QB Joe Burrow for the most touchdowns responsible (six) in any BCS or CFP national title game.

The domination started immediately as Georgia forced three-and-out on TCU’s opening possession only for Bennett to rush for a 21-yard touchdown on his team’s first possession. Three plays later, TCU wide receiver Derius Davis was stripped by Chris Smith, and the Dawgs turned the mistake into quick points with a field goal. The Frogs finally offered a response as QB Max Duggan hooked up with Davis for 60 yards; Duggan ran in a touchdown to cut TCU’s deficit to 10-7 and provide some belief that the game would be less lopsided than it appeared in the first quarter.

However, what followed before halftime — from that 10-7 score onward — was one punt and two interceptions for TCU resulting in four consecutive touchdown drives for Georgia. In less than 20 minutes of game time, a 3-point deficit between two of college football’s top teams turned into a 38-7 rout heading into the locker rooms.

The second half was a slow march to crowning the kings of college football on the game’s biggest stage. Georgia extended its lead to 52-7 by the end of the third quarter and quickly went ahead 65-7 with two early fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Beyond Bennett’s curtain call, Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart executed similar send-offs via called timeouts for numerous other stars, many of whom are headed into the 2023 NFL Draft after the game.

Winning the title in such dominant fashion, Georgia has opened up all of the discussions regarding a new dynasty in college football and brought to the surface comparisons between Smart and his mentor, Alabama coach Nick Saban. It is Saban with more national championships (seven) than Smart (two), but Georgia has won 29 of its last 30 games and stands 72-10 since the start of the 2017 season with three SEC titles and five SEC East division crowns.

As it was after the 2021 season, Smart’s Dawgs end 2022 atop the college football world; Monday’s dominant performance in is only a reminder how much work has to be done for the rest of the sport to catch up with Georgia.

Flu variant that hits kids and seniors harder than other strains is dominant in U.S. right now

A sign advertising flu shots is displayed at a Walgreens pharmacy on January 22, 2018 in San Francisco, California. A strong strain of H3N2 influenza has claimed the lives of 74 Californians under the age of 65 since the flu season began in October of last year.

A variant of the flu that hits kids and seniors worse than other strains of the virus is dominant in the U.S. right now, setting the country up for a potentially bad flu season.

Public health labs have detected influenza A(H3N2) in 76% of the more than 3,500 respiratory samples that have tested positive for the flu and were analyzed for the virus subtype, according to a surveillance report published Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The H3N2 variant has been associated with more severe flu seasons for children and the elderly in the past, according to Dr. Jose Romero, director the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Disease.

“There are also early signs of influenza causing severe illness in precisely these two groups of individuals this season,” Romero told reporters on a call earlier this month.

The flu hospitalization rate has surged to a decade high this season. Overall, about 8 people per 100,000 are being hospitalized with the flu right now but seniors and the youngest children are much harder hit than other age groups, according to CDC data.

The hospitalization rate for seniors is more than double the general population at 18 per 100,000. For kids younger than age five, the hospitalization rate is about 13 per 100,000.

CNBC Health & Science

Read CNBC’s latest global health coverage:

At least 4.4 million people have fallen ill with the flu, 38,000 have been hospitalized, and 2,100 have died since the season started. Seven kids have died from the flu so far this season.

“When we have more H3N2, we usually have a more severe flu season — so longer duration, more children affected, more children with severe disease,” said Dr. Andi Shane, a pediatrician and infectious disease expert at Children’s Healthcare Atlanta.

The other influenza A variant, H1N1, is generally associated with less severe seasons compared with H3N2, Shane said. H1N1 makes up about 22% of sample that have tested positive for flu and were analyzed for a subtype, according to CDC.

The percentage of patients reporting symptoms similar to the flu, a fever of 100 degrees or greater plus a sore throat or cough, is the highest in Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Alabama and Washington D.C right now, according to CDC.

Respiratory illnesses are also very high in Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, Maryland, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina and Texas, according to CDC.

The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months or older get a flu shot. Children younger than age 8 who are receiving the vaccine for the first time should get two doses for the best protection.

The flu vaccine is normally 40% to 60% effective at preventing illness, but people who do still get sick are less likely to end up in the hospital or die, according to the CDC.

Public health officials are also encouraging people to stay home when they are sick, cover coughs and sneezes and wash hands frequently. Those who want to take extra precautions can consider wearing a facemask indoors in public.

Georgia vs. Tennessee score, takeaways: No. 3 Dawgs suffocate No. 1 Vols offense in dominant rivalry win

No. 3 Georgia dominated No. 1 Tennessee on a rainy day at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia, that proved even more depressing for the Volunteers’ national championship aspirations. The Bulldogs jumped into first place alone atop the SEC East standings after a 27-13 demolition of the rival Vols that continued Georgia’s torrid run as reigning champions and knocked Tennessee from the ranks of the unbeaten.

Tennessee entered the game with the best scoring offense in the country, but Georgia’s dominant defense — led by star defensive lineman Jalen Carter — held the Vols without a touchdown through three quarters. Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker, a Heisman Trophy candidate entering the game, didn’t have a single passing play of 20 or more yards despite that being a staple of this up-tempo attack.

Georgia QB Stetson Bennett IV scrambled for a 13-yard touchdown on the Dawgs’ second drive, making it a 7-3 ballgame early in the contest. The defense pinned Tennessee deep, and Paxton Brooks was forced to punt out of the shadow of his own goal post. That set Georgia’s offense up in great field position, and Bennett immediately tossed a 37-yard touchdown to Ladd McConkey to make it a 14-3 game. Bennett followed that up with a 5-yard strike to Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in the second quarter to jump out to a 21-3 lead. At that point, it was smooth sailing for the reigning champions.
