Katana Zero Dev Says Free DLC Is Now So Big It’s “More Like Katana 1.5”

Katana Zero was one of the indie hits of 2019 and since then the game’s developer Askiisoft has been working on the free DLC.

Last February, it was revealed how the content would be three times the size of what was originally planned, and now, in a new update over on the company’s website, it’s been revealed it’s “6x” the originally planned size. Here’s what you can expect from this much content:

“That’s a bit over half the size of the main game. This means more levels, mechanics, enemies, bosses, and intertwined story elements. It’s less like a DLC and more like Katana 1.5.”

Despite the scale, it’s will still be “on the house” (in other words, free). Although development has slowed down over the past year, it’s now returning to normal.

As for when it’ll arrive, the creator – Justin Stander – hasn’t really thought about this just yet, but one thing that has been confirmed is that it won’t be expanding anymore:

“The short answer is – I don’t know yet. There’s a ton of content finished, but this is a large project and I’m aspiring to the same level of quality and attention of the base game. I’m also still doing all the programming and design myself – this is my passion project after all. But don’t fret! The game is progressing at a healthy pace, and the whole dev team is working full steam on production. The DLC won’t be expanding anymore either – the plan is set and now we’re focused on finishing it.”

When Katana Zero originally arrived on the Switch in April 2019, we praised its tough hair-raising action sequences, gripping narrative and impeccable sense of style. Learn more about it in our review.

Silent Hill returns tomorrow in Dark Deception DLC • Eurogamer.net

If you’re missing Silent Hill, finally, here’s some good news: you can return to its foggy streets, creepy nurses and Pyramid Heads tomorrow, via the new and officially-licensed Silent Hill DLC for multiplayer indie Steam horror game Dark Deception: Monsters & Mortals.

We briefly heard about this crossover back in January, though now we know when it arrives, and can actually see how it all looks. Here’s a gameplay trailer:

This isn’t the first time Konami has let its long-lost survival horror franchise appear in other games. A year ago, Silent Hill similarly popped up in asymmetrical horror Dead by Daylight, where Pyramid Head became a playable character.

Konami seems keen to keep Silent Hill ticking over, though when might we hear about a return for the franchise proper? Last month, Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka set fan hearts fluttering with a teasing video interview that was then abruptly pulled offline.

Before his remarks were officially airbrushed off of the internet, Yamaoka had said he was working on something to be announced this summer – something which Silent Hill fans had been “hoping to hear about”. Silent Hill, we have mist you.

Crusader Kings 3’s First Paid DLC Arrives Next Week With the Viking-Themed Northern Lords

Crusader Kings 3: Northern Lords is a Norse-themed flavor pack that is set to be released on March 16, 2021 as the game’s first paid DLC.While this isn’t a full-blown expansion to Crusader Kings 3, Northern Lords will still give players “dozens of new stories” and chances to “raid foreign shores, brave harsh winters, or establish a new Viking realm.”

Crusader Kings 3: Northern Lords Screenshots

Players will have a chance to found a new realm and establish power in foreign lands. Furthermore, Holy Norse warriors, shield-maidens, and poets will be available as new character roles.

Since the Norse culture is the focus of this flavor pack, it will allow players to immerse themselves in that world by doing everything from erecting runestones to honor your ancestors to sacrificing prisoners in a sacred blot ritual.

There will also be new Dynastic legacies, cultural innovations, and other events that will add depth to these new experiences.

Crusader Kings 3: Northern Lords can be purchased for $6.99 USD or as part of the game’s expansion pass that includes a new expansion and another new flavor pack.

In our 10/10 review of Crusader Kings 3, we said that it “takes the throne as the new king of historical strategy by expanding on and deepening the best parts of what made its predecessor memorable and unique.”

Sakurai Explains Why Xenoblade’s Rex Isn’t A Smash Ultimate DLC Fighter

During last week’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate presentation, Sakurai explained how the team considered having Xenoblade Chronicles 2‘s protagonist Rex fight alongside Pyra and Mythra but it simply wasn’t possible due to the limitations of the game.

Sakurai has now elaborated on this in his latest Famitsu column, once again explaining how the idea the team had in mind (of two different fighters at once) was ruled out due to technical barriers. In the end, it was decided the fighter would transform into two similar but different characters.

Here’s the full translation, courtesy of Ryokutya2089 (via Siliconera):

“When it was decided that we were to create a character from Xenoblade Chronicles 2, the very first thing I thought about was to show and move Rex and Pyra at the same time on screen. But a conclusion that it’s impossible came at a match speed. I somewhat requested the team to inspect it, but it was impossible.”

“When we talk about 2 people who move as a single group, there are the Ice Climbers. They have the same looks and can only do the same things. When we tried Rex + Pyra, it was clear that we could not do an essential task to have their [data] capacity exceed a processing load threshold.”

“The system to have Rex as the main fighter and Pyra overseeing him was also determined to be difficult. The design was so complex that a lot of things would have to be done.”

“Rex would have to be moved on his own. But then I thought it would be better if we can change between Pyra and Mythra.”

So this is why Rex didn’t make the cut as a DLC fighter. At least he got to feature in the final smash scene for the new DLC fighter. What do you think of the latest two-in-one character? Were you hoping Rex would be a playable character? Share your thoughts down below.

Final Fantasy VII Remake’s Yuffie DLC will be two chapters long, confirmed

The mystery is coming together

So Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade instantly shot up on my 2021 radar.

Yeah, some parts of it are a bummer, like the PS5-specific requirement. And not everyone has one of those! Seeing as they’re basically unicorn pieces of hardware. But for those that do, we have more Final Fantasy VII Remake to enjoy sooner than later (whenever Part 2 decides to actually come out).

To that end, folks are champing at the bit for more Yuffie DLC info, and we got it. As spotted on Game Watch (via Nibel), the Yuffice DLC bit will take place across two chapters. Yuffie will also be able to use “ninja-like” abilities outside of combat, and she will be accompanied by her companion, Sonon; who is a “warrior who studied under Yuffie’s father Godo.”

Both of the latter factoids were intimated in the trailer, but it’s nice to see it spelled out. The chapter part is especially useful, so we have our expectations in check when this actually launches later this year. For reference, the base game was roughly 18 chapters, though the length of those varied some.

Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity Is Getting An Expansion Pass

Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity had a strong launch back in November. Becoming the best-selling Musou game of all-time, it presented a highly enjoyable prequel to Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, starting just before the calamity.

It was already a pretty complete experience but it seems this isn’t over yet. Confirmed within the latest Nintendo Direct, Age of Calamity’s getting an expansion pass. Shortly after the presentation, Nintendo released this statement:

Expand your quest to save Hyrule with upcoming downloadable content, as two waves of DLC are coming to the Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Expansion Pass. Newly added characters, stages and more are all on their way, with the first wave coming in June and the second hitting in November. Players who purchase this Expansion Pass on Nintendo eShop for £17.99 / €19.99 will get both waves of DLC as they are released. They’ll also get an additional in-game weapon and costume for Link as a purchase bonus starting on 28th May. The Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Expansion Pass will be available for purchase shortly after the presentation.

It follows Breath of the Wild’s example, which also saw an Expansion Pass with two waves of DLC. We won’t see this new content arrive until May, but you can pre-order it now via the Switch eShop.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s Next DLC Character Could Be a Fan-Favorite

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s next DLC character could be a fan-favorite, or at least that’s what a somewhat convincing fan theory suggests. If you ask any Super Smash Bros. Ultimate player on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite what character they want to see added to the platform fighter next, there’s a good chance you’ll hear names like Sora, Geno, Waluigi, Lloyd, Master Chief, Doomguy, Jonesy, and Crash Bandicoot, who, other than maybe Sora, is the most in-demand DLC character. That said, according to a new theory, the former PlayStation icon is coming to the game next.

The theory begins with the announcement that Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time is coming to Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite — and other platforms — next month on March 12. From here, the theory merges with the long-running “Amiibo Theory,” a well-established Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC theory.

According to the Amiibo Theory, at least currently, the next fighter will be out by the end of March as the next wave of amiibo is scheduled to release towards the end of the month. In other words, the Amiibo Theory and the release of Crash 4 on Switch and Switch Lite seems to lineup too nicely, at least for some Nintendo fans.

However, the theory doesn’t end there. It also digs up an old Activision leak, which made note of plans to revive Crash Bandicoot. And the cap to this was to bring Crash to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Making this part even more interesting is a new report that claims Activision may be done with the franchise for a little bit. Again, the timing of this, the Activision leak, and everything above is certainly interesting.

All of that said, right now, this is just a theory. Further, while it makes a convincing case, so have many other Super Smash Bros. Ultimate theories over the years, almost all of which didn’t come true. In other words, take everything here with a grain of salt.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available via the Switch and the Switch Lite. For more coverage on the best-selling and critically-acclaimed platform fighter, click here.

Mass Effect’s Pinnacle Station DLC is forever lost due to data corruption

The Pinnacle Station, a training facility added to the first Mass Effect, won’t appear in Mass Effect: Legendary Edition alongside over 40 other pieces of downloadable content. Game Informer reports that the Pinnacle Station, created by Demiurge Studios for the first game, can’t be salvaged due to data corruption.

Legendary Edition repackages the original trilogy and all of its previously released content with new features and a major graphical overhaul. Speaking to Game Informer, game director Mac Walters said that trying to save the DLC was an “emotional roller coaster” that included reaching out to Demiurge and trying to obtain backups. Source code from the developer was corrupted. The original code source code has also been notoriously lost, which kept PlayStation 3 players from experiencing it when the game arrived on the platform.

Re-creating the DLC would have taken six months with “most” of Legendary Edition’s team, Walters said. “I wish we could do it. Honestly, just because this is meant to be everything that the team ever created, brought together again — all the single-player content. And so, leaving it all on the cutting-room floor, it was heartbreaking.”

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition will launch on May 14th on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is missing one DLC

The remastered trilogy of Mass Effect Legendary Edition contains almost all of BioWare’s sci-fi RPG epic, with two notable exceptions: ME3’s multiplayer, and ME1’s Pinnacle Station DLC. While the absence of multiplayer is a glaring absence (I’ll honestly miss it), when BioWare announced the release date yesterday I’d initially not noticed Pinnacle wasn’t in the big long list of included DLC. Turns out, the source code was corrupted, and rebuilding it from scratch would’ve taken ages.

2nd Encore trailer, more DLC on the way

A trailer showcasing Annie’s gameplay in Skullgirls: 2nd Encore has dropped. It was also revealed that another character will be joining after Annie of the Stars.

Annie of the Stars made her gaming debut in Skullgirls Mobile on August 14, 2020. She’s planned to join Skullgirls: 2nd Encore’s roster in early 2021.

“Cursed by the Skull Heart to never grow up, Annie has been alive for centuries. Over that time, she’s made it her personal quest to stop the Skull Heart once and for all. To that end, she has acquired numerous skills and items, including her remote parasite, Sagan. Even performing on television works to further her goals as she hopes to educate the world about the dangers of the Skull Heart.”

During the trailer, Annie is shown to fight with a sword. One of her grounded supers has her lunging forward with the blade, which seems kind of similar to Nathan Rad Spencer’s Bionic Arm hyper in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.

Another super essentially functions a beam attack. Annie is able to perform this super while airborne. This attack is actually being performed by Sagan, her parasite.

She’s also shown pulling off some sort of pose during one of her supers. This is very likely a powerup that gives her some sort of boost.

At the end of the trailer, it was revealed that “a new star enters the spotlight” as a slot with a question mark appeared next to Annie. There was also another blank slot in the film next to that slot, implying the existence of yet another new character beyond that.
