NFL Divisional Playoff Predictions: Titans, Packers, Buccaneers and Chiefs? Who will progress to the Conference Championships? | NFL News

The opening round of the NFL playoffs followed much the same pattern of the regular season, with some thrilling football played out over Super Wild Card Weekend – and Neil Reynolds again getting the better of Jeff Reinebold with his predictions…

As well as hosting Inside The Huddle on Sky Sports NFL every Tuesday at 9pm, Neil and Jeff release a weekly audio edition of ITH every Wednesday in which they make their game picks.

Neil emerged victorious (175-168) in the regular season, and Neil opened the playoffs with a further two-point swing in his favour as he correctly called wins for the San Francisco 49ers, on the road against the Dallas Cowboys, and for the Los Angeles Rams over the Arizona Cardinals on Monday night. Can Jeff play for some pride and get a win this weekend?

Click on the link below to listen to this week’s ITH podcast, and read on to see Neil and Jeff’s Divisional Round game picks…

Cincinnati Bengals @ Tennessee Titans

NEIL PICKS: Titans

“This one is tricky. Initially I fancied Cincinnati to beat Tennessee… but only one team gets a bye, and the Bengals are quite banged up now on their defensive line – Larry Ogunjobi we know is out with a foot injury, he’s on injured reserve, and Trey Hendrickson has a concussion.

“I do still think the Bengals will make this a really competitive game – Joe Burrow is in red-hot form, with 1,215 yards, 10 touchdowns and zero picks in his last three outings – but I’m actually going to flip my pick, and probably annoy myself if Cincinnati now win. I’m taking the Titans.”

JEFF PICKS: Titans

“A team like Cincinnati is rebuilding, and the way the league is structured – with a salary cap and draft choices – the hardest thing to acquire is depth, because that takes time.

“So when you lose a guy like Ogunjobi, or Hendrickson, the drop off to the next guy can be really steep. That’s my concern for the Bengals, so I’m taking Tennessee too.

“I am a huge Burrow fan, but this is his first venture into this water, Ja’Marr Chase too, and the head coach Zac Taylor. With every game up the chain in the playoffs, the attention, the pressure, the importance all ratchets up. The Titans just have more experience of these kind of moments.”

San Francisco 49ers @ Green Bay Packers

NEIL PICKS: Packers

“This is going to be an absolute cracker at Lambeau Field.

“The 49ers have a run game that is very diverse and exciting to watch. That helps when it comes to travelling on the road, as we saw last week when they went into Dallas – I picked them to win – and beat the Cowboys. I absolutely love watching Deebo Samuel. They’ll be very confident.

“But I think Green Bay can run the ball as well and, if it’s a close game, I’m riding with Aaron Rodgers over Jimmy Garoppolo all day long and twice on Sundays. Packers for me.”

JEFF PICKS: Packers

“This is going to be a great football game, played out in the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field. Even the uniforms in this game, they conjure up great memories of NFL playoff history – its so awesome!

“I’m not sold yet on how the Niners handle the pressure moments of big games. Everything goes through the quarterback, and that is amplified even more in the playoffs; if all other things are equal, who do you want, Rodgers or Garoppolo? I’m taking Green Bay.”

Los Angeles Rams @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers

NEIL PICKS: Buccaneers

“This is another one where if you’d have asked me at the start of the playoffs, I’d have had the Bucs advancing.

“But, this becomes a much tougher proposition now for Tampa Bay if Tristan Wirfs – their All-Pro right tackle – is not playing in this game with an ankle injury. Ryan Jensen, their center, also was banged up, although he went back into the game last week. Wirfs, according to head coach Bruce Arians, is a game-time decision, it’s going to go right down to the wire. And, suddenly, here come Aaron Donald, Von Miller and Leonard Floyd on the Rams defensive line.

“I am going to continue to ride the Tampa Bay train and still pick the Bucs, but this becomes a much, much tougher game.”

JEFF PICKS: Rams

“Football is a game of matchups. It’s such a strategic game. And with the Rams, you’ve got Cooper Kupp and Tyler Higbee who are really good against zone coverage. But then there’s Odell Beckham Jr. and his unique set of skills, which is particularly effective when it’s one-on-one, him versus another athlete.

“The Rams build formations to ensure they isolate your player against their player, OBJ. That presents so many challenges. It’s a fascinating chess match.

“I was down on the Rams defense after they melted down against San Francisco a couple of weeks ago, but I was so impressed by them against the Cardinals. If Wirfs doesn’t play, Tom Brady should watch out!”

Buffalo Bills @ Kansas City Chiefs

NEIL PICKS: Bills

“This one is mouth-watering. Both teams went on incredible offensive tears in their Wild Card wins last week.

“My overriding felling on this game is that I’m just going to be sad to have to wave goodbye to one of them – one of these quality teams is heading out of the playoffs on Sunday night.

“In the summer, I picked Buffalo to win the Super Bowl, but at the start of the playoffs, I picked the Chiefs to go to the Super Bowl – so I don’t know where to go here, I’m stuck.

“Both teams are pretty unstoppable on offense, but I think Buffalo have the better defense – that was the case when they played in Arrowhead earlier in the season – so I’m flip-flopping again and going back to Buffalo to win this one.”

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen threw five touchdowns in a near-perfect performance against the New England Patriots on Super Wild Card Weekend.

JEFF PICKS: Bills

“The Bills are uniquely built not to beat the New England Patriots, not the New York Jets or the Miami Dolphins in their division. They’ve been built to beat the best in the AFC, and that’s the Chiefs.

“I’m going to take the Bills to win on the road in Kansas City.”

PFT’s NFL 2022 divisional round picks

Getty Images

Six postseason games down, seven to go.

MDS won the wild-card round with a 5-1 record. I went 4-2.

This week, we disagree on one of the four games.

For the year, I’m 181-96-1. MDS is 177-100-1.

For this week’s takes and picks, scroll away.

Bengals (+3.5) at Titans

MDS’s take: The Titans are healthier right now than they were during the regular season, and I’m expecting them to play one of their best games and remind everyone that the road to the Super Bowl in the AFC goes through Tennessee.

MDS’s pick: Titans 27, Bengals 20.

Florio’s take: Derrick Henry makes a huge difference for a team that went 6-3 without him. The Cincinnati offense lacked the killer instinct on Saturday against the Raiders, allowing Las Vegas to hang around for far too long. While the Bengals may indeed be a Super Bowl contender in 2022, it feels like they’ve reached the end of the road. The Titans, in contrast, are just getting started.

Florio’s pick: Titans 24, Bengals 17.

49ers (+6) at Packers

MDS’s take: The Packers benefited from the bye week while the 49ers played a tough, physical game in Dallas that left them banged up. Playing Saturday on a short work week, the 49ers will struggle.

MDS’s pick: Packers 30, 49ers 17.

Florio’s take: One team’s quarterback is Aaron Rodgers. The other team’s quarterback is Jimmy Garoppolo. Need I say more? (I will anyway.) San Francisco’s defense will have a hard time keeping Rodgers from torching it, especially if Nick Bosa (concussion) can’t go. Rodgers has limited shots at winning another Super Bowl. This may be his best, and possibly his last, as a Packer.

Florio’s pick: Packers 27, 49ers 20.

Rams (+2.5) at Buccaneers

MDS’s take: Both of these teams won blowouts last week, but this should be a hard-fought game. I trust Tom Brady in the fourth quarter of a close playoff game more than I trust Matthew Stafford.

MDS’s pick: Buccaneers 28, Rams 24.

Florio’s take: It won’t be easy for the Bucs. They’ll need to commit to the run in order to set up the pass. Throw too much, and Tom Brady may soon be putting the ball up for grabs in order to avoid getting his 44-year-old body banged around. If the Rams can’t run effectively, quarterback Matthew Stafford may eventually make a fatal mistake.

Florio’s pick: Buccaneers 23, Ram 17.

Bills (+1.5) at Chiefs

MDS’s take: The best game of the divisional round features two quarterbacks who were outstanding in the wild card round. I trust Patrick Mahomes a little bit more than Josh Allen to play that well again in the divisional round, so I’ll pick the Chiefs.

MDS’s pick: Chiefs 31, Bills 28.

Florio’s take: This one has game of the year potential, with the Bills ready to exorcise more demons and the Chiefs potentially on their heels as they try to slow down Buffalo’s offense. Crazy as it sounds, Kansas City should consider slowing things down and limiting possessions in order to avoid letting the Bills fast-break their way to 40 points.

Florio’s pick: Bills 41, Chiefs 28.

NFL odds, lines, bracket, picks, spreads, predictions for divisional round playoffs 2022: Model high on Bills

The divisional round NFL schedule is here, and in a welcome sight after a mostly lopsided first weekend of the 2022 NFL playoffs, all four games have NFL spreads under a touchdown. Three of those four divisional round NFL Vegas lines are 3.5 points or fewer, with Packers vs. 49ers (-5.5) the only spread over five points in the latest divisional round NFL odds at Caesars Sportsbook.

The Packers will have Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams and the rest of their arsenal against San Francisco. More notably, the Titans could have running back Derrick Henry on the field for the first time since he suffered a foot injury in October. All of the divisional round NFL lines are listed below and SportsLine’s advanced computer model has all the NFL betting advice and predictions you need to make the best divisional round NFL picks now.

The model, which simulates every NFL game 10,000 times, is up over $7,500 for $100 players on top-rated NFL picks since its inception six-plus years ago. The model enters the divisional round of the 2021 NFL playoffs on an incredible 137-97 run on top-rated NFL picks that dates back to the 2017 season. Amazingly, it hasn’t missed a top-rated pick since Week 14 of the regular season.

The model also ranked in the top 10 on NFLPickWatch four of the past five years on straight-up NFL picks and beat more than 94 percent of CBS Sports Football Pick’em players four times during that span. Anyone who has followed it is way up.

Now, it has turned its attention to the latest divisional round 2022 NFL odds and locked in picks for every NFL matchup. Head here to see every pick.

Top divisional round NFL predictions

One of the model’s strongest divisional round picks is that the Buffalo Bills (+2) cover the spread against the Chiefs. Each team enters the divisional round having trounced its opponent last week, but what the Bills did to the Patriots is on a different level from what the Chiefs did to the Steelers. Buffalo took a team that was a threat to go deep in the NFL playoffs 2022 and crushed them by 30.

SportsLine’s model has the Bills covering the two-point spread in over 50 percent of simulations, making them a top pick for the weekend’s NFL playoff games. The point total goes over 55 at an even higher rate, hitting in almost 60 percent of simulations.

How to make divisional round NFL picks

The model has also made the call on who wins and covers in every other game on the divisional round NFL schedule, and it’s calling for one team to cover in well over 50 percent of simulations. You can only get every pick for every game at SportsLine.

So which NFL picks can you make with confidence, and which team is a must-back? Check out the latest NFL odds below, then visit SportsLine to see which teams win and cover the spread, all from a proven computer model that has returned over $7,500 since its inception, and find out.

Bucs favored by 3 over Rams, all four home teams favored in divisional round

Getty Images

After the Rams beat the Cardinals on Monday night, they opened as underdogs for Sunday’s divisional round game at Tampa Bay.

The Buccaneers initially opened as 2.5-point favorites and quickly moved to 3-point favorites over the Rams at most sports books. Bettors are showing faith in the Bucs even though the Rams won 34-24 when the teams met in the regular season.

The NFC No. 1 seed Packers are the biggest favorites next weekend, with a line of 5.5 over the 49ers on Saturday at Lambeau Field.

The AFC No. 1 seed Titans are 3.5-point favorites over the Bengals. That’s the smallest point spread the No. 1 seed has had in its divisional round game since the 2017 Eagles were 2.5-point favorites — and that was because the Eagles had lost their starting quarterback, Carson Wentz, and few expected Nick Foles to lead them to the Super Bowl.

In the final game of the divisional round, the Chiefs are 2.5-point favorites over the Bills, despite the Bills winning 38-20 at Kansas City when the teams met in the regular season.

All four home teams are favored in the divisional round.

2022 NFL playoffs bracket: Divisional round lookahead, as Chiefs host Bills in AFC Championship Game rematch

Just like that, one round of playoff football is already in the books. Well, almost. Monday night’s NFC West rematch between the 49ers and Rams will bring an official close to Super Wild Card Weekend. Then it’s on to the divisional round, where the No. 1-seeded Packers and Titans will enter the dance as everyone looks to take one step closer to Super Bowl LVI.

When and where will the next big playoff games take place? And which matchup is the most anticipated? Check out our instant divisional round lookahead for all the details:

AFC

When: Saturday, 4:35 p.m. ET
TV: CBS | Stream: Paramount+ (click here)
Line: Titans -3, O/U 47

The Bengals are riding high after ending their 31-year playoff drought after edging the Raiders in the wild card round. Cincinnati will come to Nashville featuring one of the NFL’s best offenses, led by quarterback Joe Burrow, running back Joe Mixon and receivers Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd. The Bengals will monitor the statuses of defensive end Trey Hendrickson and defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi this week. Hendrickson is the concussion protocol, while Ogunjobi sustained a foot injury against the Raiders.

The Titans had the weekend off after earning the AFC’s lone playoff bye. Despite losing Derrick Henry at midseason, the Titans went 12-5 during the regular season behind an effective running game and a defense that was one of the league’s best in terms of scoring, rushing yards allowed and third-down and red-zone efficiency. The Titans’ defense was just 25th against the pass, a bad sign with Burrow coming to town.

Line: Chiefs -2, O/U 54.5

Divisional round weekend will commence with a rematch of last year’s AFC Championship Game. It is also between two teams that scored a combined 89 points in wild card wins over New England and Pittsburgh. On Saturday, the Bills became the NFL’s first team to not punt, attempt a field goal or commit a turnover while scoring seven touchdowns against the Patriots. On Sunday, the Chiefs scored on six consecutive drives that included five touchdown passes from Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs posted a 38-24 win over the Bills in last year’s AFC Championship Game. But they were on the short end of a 38-20 score back in Week 5. Josh Allen torched the Chiefs’ defense to the tune of 315 yards and three touchdown passes. Buffalo’s defense forced two interceptions off of Mahomes, who attempted. season-high 54 passes. The game’s critical play was turned in by Bills defensive back Micah Hyde, who gave his team a 31-13 lead after returning an interception 26 yards for a score midway through the third quarter.

NFC

49ers at Packers

When: Saturday, 8:15 p.m. ET
TV: Fox
Line: Packers -5, O/U 47.5

A game oozing with playoff history, the Packers and 49ers will meet in the postseason for the ninth time since the 1995 season. While the top-seeded Packers rested on Sunday, the 49ers punched their ticket to the divisional round after upsetting the Cowboys at AT&T Stadium. San Francisco’s offense received clutch performances from receiver Deebo Samuel and running back Elijah Mitchell, while the 49ers’ defense sacked Dak Prescott five times while holding the Cowboys to just 17 points.

The two teams played in one of the NFL’s best regular-season games back in Week 3. Green Bay led 17-7 at halftime before needing a last-minute drive to pull out a 30-28 win in Levi’s Stadium. The game’s biggest star was Packers wideout Davante Adams, who caught 12 passes for 132 yards and a score. His catches of 17 and 25 yards set up Mason Crosby’s 51-yard field goal on the game’s final play.

When: Sunday, 3:05 p.m. ET
TV: NBC
Line: TBD

The winner of Monday night’s game will face the defending champions in the divisional round. While they suffered an injury to offense tackle Tristan Wirfs, the Buccaneers otherwise faced little turbulence in Sunday’s 31-15 win over the Eagles. Tom Brady threw for 271 yards two touchdowns, while the Buccaneers’ defense came up with two interceptions off of Jalen Hurts.

They didn’t face the Cardinals, but the Buccaneers did face the Rams back in Week 3. Los Angeles jumped out to a 21-7 lead in that game en route to a 34-24 win. Brady threw for 432 yards in a losing effort, while the Rams received 343 yards and four touchdowns from quarterback Matthew Stafford. Two of his touchdown passes went to Cooper Kupp, who led the NFL in receptions, yards and touchdown catches during the regular season.

Chiefs-Bills playoffs: NFL announces day and time for Divisional Round

With their 42-21 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Kansas City Chiefs have advanced to the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs. The No. 2-seeded Chiefs will meet the No. 3-seeded Buffalo Bills after the Bills defeated the New England Patriots 47-17 in their playoff game on Saturday night.

As time winded down on Sunday night, the NFL announced that the Chiefs would meet the Bills on Sunday, January 23, at 5:30 p.m. Arrowhead Time. The Chiefs and Bills will play in the final game of the weekend.

The weekend’s full Divisional Round schedule can be found below:

Saturday, January 22

Sunday, January 23

The Bengals-Titans matchup Saturday will determine if the Chiefs are to have home-field advantage throughout the duration of the AFC playoffs.

If the Bengals advance, the Chiefs would host the Bengals for the AFC championship should they beat the Bills. If the Titans advance, the Chiefs would travel to Nashville for the AFC championship should they beat the Bills.

How the Bengals Advanced to the Divisional Round

The four teams headlining Saturday’s N.F.L. wild-card doubleheader know each other well, but prior history did not change the outcome of Saturday’s first playoff matchup.

The Cincinnati Bengals beat the Las Vegas Raiders for the second time this season, 26-19, in their wild-card round matchup Saturday.

The New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills, two A.F.C. East rivals, met twice in the regular season, splitting those games with each team winning on its opponent’s home field.

A rematch and the final game in this season’s trilogy awaits. Here’s a look how the first games of the 2022 N.F.L. postseason played out.

A large majority of players on both of these teams had never played in a playoff game, but one side got a valuable bit of preparation for its postseason run.

The Bengals’ 26-19 win over the Raiders at Paul Brown Stadium on Saturday, the franchise’s first playoff victory in 31 years, could prove to be valuable experience when Cincinnati hits the road next week in the Divisional Round.

The Raiders, a franchise which hadn’t made the postseason since 2016 and last won a playoff game in 2002, suffered from a lack of rest and preparation that showed.

Quarterback Joe Burrow led the Bengals’ high-powered offense on scoring drives in their four possessions in the first half, connecting for touchdowns with receiver Tyler Boyd and tight end C.J. Uzomah. The Bengals had more trouble moving the ball in the second half, and were slowed by at least one penalty not called against the Raiders.

But Burrow, who finished with 244 yards on 24 of 34 passing with no interceptions, provided just enough offense to counter the Raiders, who moved the ball much better in the second half thanks to big plays by quarterback Derek Carr, running back Josh Jacobs, and several critical penalties on the Bengals. The Bengals defense held off Carr and the Raiders, who mounted a feverish attempted comeback, down 26-16, in the fourth quarter with no timeouts and less than two minutes to play.

Carr kept the game close, hitting DeSean Jackson on a pass to convert on fourth-and-5 from the Raiders’ 44-yard line. The Raiders kicked a field goal on the drive with less than four minutes remaining to narrow their deficit to 26-19.

The Bengals drained more than two minutes off the clock on the ensuing possession, but could not score. The rookie receiver Ja’Marr Chase finished with nine catches for 116 yards.

The Raiders got the ball back on their own 35-yard line with 1:51 remaining. Carr hit Jacobs for a 15-yard gain and the Bengals were charged with a roughing-the-passer penalty, bringing the Raiders past midfield. Without any time outs, Las Vegas had little margin for error and the weight of Cincinnati’s past playoff failures heightened the drama.

But on fourth-and-goal from the Bengals’ 9-yard line, Carr was intercepted, ending the Raiders’ topsy-turvy season, and sealing the long-awaited playoff win for the Bengals.

8:15 p.m., CBS

The Bills (11-6) won four of their last five games of the regular season to lock up the A.F.C.’s No. 3 seed. The Patriots (10-7) went 2-3 to close out the season and ended with the No. 6 seed.

They’ll meet at Highmark Stadium on Saturday where the temperature is expected to be in the single digits with a wind chill around negative 10 to 15 by kickoff.

That means this game could look a lot like when the teams met in early December, when the Patriots’ rookie quarterback Mac Jones attempted just three passes in a blustery, run-heavy matchup in New York. New England won, 14-10, with over 200 yards on the ground.

The Patriots could be without starting cornerback Jalen Mills, who was added to the reserve/Covid-19 list Tuesday, which would be problematic for a secondary already lacking in depth at the corner position.

New England traded Pro Bowl defensive back Stephon Gilmore to the Carolina Panthers during training camp. The Patriots’ slot cornerback Jonathan Jones had season-ending shoulder surgery in October. Mills and cornerback J.C. Jackson have been the centerpieces of the Patriots’ thin secondary.

Still, the Patriots’ defense allowed only 17.8 points per game, the second lowest total in the league (Buffalo allowed 17.0). The Bills ended the regular season with one of the N.F.L.’s best defensive units, leading the league in several defensive categories, including fewest yards allowed per game and fewest passing yards allowed.

In the teams’ second meeting, the Bills forced one of Jones’s worst performances of the year in a double-digit win. Jones completed 14 of 32 passes and threw two interceptions in the game.

Buffalo’s offense, headed by quarterback Josh Allen, has been inconsistent this season, but the threat of the connection between Allen and wide receiver Stefon Diggs remains. In that Gillette Stadium win, Diggs had six catches for 85 yards and a touchdown.
