Keanu Reeves Departs Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio’s ‘Devil in the White City’ at Hulu – The Hollywood Reporter

That was fast.

Two months after Hulu officially confirmed that Keanu Reeves would lead its Devil in the White City series from Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, the Matrix favorite has exited the project.

Sources say the Disney-backed streamer is already searching for a replacement star to lead the drama, which has been in various stages of development for more than a decade. Reps for Hulu and Reeves declined to comment.

Hulu officially ordered Devil in the White City in early August, with Reeves officially closing a deal to star in the series that would have marked his largest TV commitment to date.

The show has been in the works for more than a decade, including a stint when it was envisioned as a feature film, with Sam Shaw (Hulu’s Castle Rock) on board as writer, showrunner and exec producer. DiCaprio and his Appian Way partner, Jennifer Davisson, exec produce alongside Scorsese. The latter was previously set to direct the feature film take that had been set up at Paramount Pictures with DiCaprio formerly set to star. Reeves — following months of dealmaking — was attached to star and exec produce the series that landed at Hulu for development in 2019. Todd Field is on board to direct the crime drama, which is now a co-production between Paramount Television Studios and Disney’s ABC Signature. Paramount Pictures won the rights to the novel following a massive bidding war in 2015, when Billy Ray was on board to pen the scripts.

Based on Erik Larson’s novel, Devil revolves around Daniel H. Burnham (the role formerly to have been played by Reeves), a demanding but visionary architect who races to make his mark on history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and Dr. H. H. Holmes, America’s first modern serial killer and the man behind the notorious “Murder Castle” built in the fair’s shadow. (DiCaprio is not expected to have an onscreen role as of press time.)

Rick Yorn, Stacey Sher, Field and Mark Lafferty also exec produce the series. A formal episode count has not yet been determined. Scorsese and DiCaprio have previously teamed for features Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island and The Wolf of Wall Street. The frequent collaborators had previously developed TV takes on Gangs of New York and Shutter Island, though neither moved beyond the script stage. DiCaprio currently has a film and TV deal at Apple. DiCaprio exec produces the Apple series Shining Girls and has the $200 million feature Killers of the Flower Moon set to debut on the streamer next year.

THR’s sibling site, Variety, was first to report Reeves’ exit.

The Devil and the Death Shots › American Greatness

I am energized. I’m angry. I’m more determined than ever to stand against this evil.

What got to me was a photo of Joe Biden holding an innocent baby reaching up to touch his masked face.

Biden the Idiot. The court buffoon. The puppet hobbling along, falling off his bike, staring into space, saying weird and unintelligible things, guided along by his poor little wife and his anxious handlers, setting the example for the masses so that they, too, will happily be led along. Close your eyes, shut off your mind.

Yes, that photo brought it all together and made it difficult for me to contain my rage. If ever I was convinced our government leaders serve the Devil—the actual Devil—that photo brought it home. No mincing of words today.

And then the headline associated the photo: “Biden visits clinic, celebrates COVID shots for kids under 5.

Celebrates.

He celebrates that 17 million more children, down to the age of 6 months, are now eligible for the death shot.

Six months-old, surely that will be the end of it. But you know what? They still aren’t satisfied. Those CEOs at Pfizer and Moderna, Albert Bourla and Stéphane Bancel, are in a little competition with one another. Who can inject the most babies and make the biggest profit?

Moderna is wasting no time: “Moderna to Study Its Covid-19 Vaccine in Babies as Young as 3 Months,” reports the Wall Street Journal. As many as 700 infants would be enrolled to test proper doses for ages 3 months to 6 months.

This evil is out of control. Where are the angels, the warriors? How does one fight against an enemy that cannot be attacked by sword or reason?

Visiting the Washington, D.C. clinic where the first shots were being administered, Biden proudly proclaimed to parents: “Relief, isn’t it? Being able to do it? We’re the only country in the world doing this right now.” Turning his dead eyes on one young girl, the White House occupant said, “This is a great place for you all. We’re going to beat this thing. You’ll be able to go anywhere you want.”

You’ll be able to go anywhere you want.

What kid doesn’t like the sound of that? Freedom! Just like any drug pusher on the street, take this little pill and you’ll fly. Except you will always and forever be their slave.

Come on just this one shot—or is it two or three or infinity? And then, who knows? Maybe when you’re 10 years old, you’ll want to change your sex, something your school will encourage you to do. By then, you’ll be so pumped full of drugs and used to it, what will be the harm of adding puberty blockers to the mix? Don’t worry, you won’t even need your parents’ permission.

Shh! don’t tell them! The state will take care of you. We will oh-so-lovingly pick you apart, piece by piece, and then put you back together again, scarred and addicted to our drugs forever. Or maybe we won’t put you back together again. Maybe we will extract your organs, your cells, your DNA, your young, fresh blood, so that the elite can tinker and play with it, finding ways to live longer while you die.

Think about it. All of these drugs and procedures are being approved. By the Biden puppet regime—owned by the pharmaceutical companies. They want every person in the United States to be an addict, starting at birth, or if they can achieve it, before birth. Little by little by little the public has been led to believe they cannot survive without their injections, pills, patches, and microchips.

Shame on us for not stopping it sooner. Because there were plenty of opportunities to stand up and refuse if we had just paid attention.

They did it with Ritalin, in 2011, lowering the age of prescription to 4 years-old. Ritalin was an important “gateway” drug easing parents into accepting governmental control of their children.

The American Academy of Pediatrics issued new treatment guidelines for “Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder” that said ADHD can be diagnosed in kids as early as age four, and that Ritalin and similar drugs are an appropriate treatment even for children this young.

Never mind that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration categorizes Ritalin in the same class of highly addictive drugs as cocaine, morphine and opium.

Some severe side effects of Ritalin include:

  • cardiovascular reactions, including sudden death, stroke, and heart attack;
  • increased blood pressure;
  • increased heart rate (tachycardia);
  • psychiatric adverse reactions, including worsening of a pre-existing psychiatric condition;
  • development of new psychotic or manic symptoms;
  • sustained and sometimes painful erections in males;
  • poor circulation, including Raynaud’s phenomenon;
  • long-term suppression of growth and weight loss in pediatric patients;
  • potential for abuse and dependence.

And yet, if a psychiatrist determines that a child has a mental “disorder” (ADHD) based on a checklist of behaviors such as “loses pencils or toys,” “often does not seem to listen,” “is easily distracted by extraneous stimuli,” “fidgets” or “runs about or climbs excessively in situations when it is not appropriate” he or she may be administered this drug.

Parents agreed, willingly sedating their children in order to comply with the state.

We complain about injecting our children with an mRNA gene therapy. Yet, vaccines previously given to our children contained poisons like mercury, or ethylmercury (commonly known as thimerosal).

A CounterPunch article in 2012 lays bare how the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), surely an organization parents should be able to trust, vehemently opposed the United Nations proposed “binding treaty to ban ethylmercury from all medications and vaccines worldwide.

In the December 17, 2012, issue of Pediatrics, former AAP president Louis Cooper wrote:

Science clearly documented that we can’t find hazards from thimerosal in vaccines . . . The preservative plays a critical role in distribution of vaccines to the global community. It was a no-brainer what our position needed to be.

This despite its official position on mercury being made clear as far back as July 2001: “The developing fetus and young children are thought to be disproportionately affected by mercury exposure, because many aspects of development, particularly brain maturation, can be disturbed by the presence of mercury. Minimizing mercury exposure is, therefore, essential to optimal child health.”

Isn’t it amazing how “science” changes its position to validate the agendas of powerful drug companies?

Soul Hackers 2 ‘Summoners Guide Vol. 4’ video – Ringo, Figue, and Devil Summoner progression elements

ATLUS [1,850 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/companies/atlus”>ATLUS has released the fourth volume in its series of “Summoners Guide” information videos for Soul Hackers 2 [13 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/games/soul-hackers-2″>Soul Hackers 2.

The “System: Facilities” page of the official Japanese website was also updated.

Get the video and full English transcript below.

■ Introduction

Hey there, how’ve you been? I’m Ringo of Aion. This is the fourth Summoner’s Guide, a program that teaches you how to be a Devil Summoner. Make sure to follow along, okay?

First things first, have you seen the video about me and Figue that was released the other day? I’ve got even more info for you today.

Ringo

I’m sure you know this by now, but I’m Ringo, an agent of Aion. I was recently born to prevent the world from coming to an end, and I’m still in the process of learning about humans. I’d love to learn more about all of you. It wouldn’t be fair if this is a one-way deal, so I’ll tell you about me first.

My COMP has some special characteristics. It’s usually a katana type, but can transform into a gun-type COMP during a Sabbath. I’m pretty good with Electricity and Almighty skills. I also have high offensive power, so you can count on me as an attacker. I even plan on learning skills that let me expand the number of a demon’s skill slots. I’m sure it’ll come in handy, so be sure to give it a try.

Figue

Moving on to Figue, the other agent who was born at the same time as me. I guess you could say she’s kind of like a sister to me. Figue is the careful and dependable type, unlike me. She helps us out by providing intel among other things, which suits her perfectly.

Her analytical skills make her a good fit for a support role. She scouts dungeons for enemies using her owl-type drone named Mimi. Pretty cute, don’t you think? Mimi alerts us when enemies appear and lets us know when demons out on Demon Recon are nearby, so be sure to pay attention.

And…what else is there… Oh yeah… Her favorite food is taiyaki! She’ll get mad at me if I blab too much, so you should talk to her directly. Please look after my adorable Figue!

In order to pass down the will of Aion to the two of us, Flamma was born. Flamma just tells us what we need to know in a matter-of-fact way, but she could be a bit more friendly about it.

Now that I’ve gone over the…people? Who are related to Aion, This sums up the gist of everything I talked about. Now you have a good idea of everyone’s relationship with each other. That’s a pretty complex correlation chart. Humans really are fascinating.

■ Devil Summoner Progression Elements

Now I’d like to discuss how Devil Summoners grow stronger. Humans must continue to grow each and every day.

At the Mansei Realm facility COMP SMITH, acquired materials can be used to modify COMPs. It’s run by the talented Tara (voiced by Yumiri Hanamori), who can apply modifications useful for battle such as increasing attack or decreasing MP costs… or skills like Pick-Me-Up, which increases the chance of obtaining items from defeated enemies, which can grant valuable benefits for exploration.

There are also Commander Skills exclusively available to Ringo’s COMP. Freely customize your COMPs to suit your individual play style.

Accessories can be purchased in Zafiro, which is located in Shinsando. Not only can accessories boost defense, but many of them can modify various stats such as evasion. Try equipping accessories that work well with your play style.

Also located in Shinsando is Bar Heidrun, where Ringo and her allies can spend time together. These interactions where they converse and drink together are called Hangout Events, and completing them boosts your Soul Level with a given ally.

Soul Levels represent the level of mutual understanding between allies. Other than hanging out at the bar, Soul Levels can be increased by progressing the story. They say that increasing Soul Levels can grant some sort of boon.

—Ringo: “We can’t approach this like there’s only one right way to do things.”

Modify COMPs and equip accessories to power up characters. Boost Soul Levels and deepen your relationship with your allies! In order to face powerful enemies, you’ll need to become stronger as a Devil Summoner and as a team.

■ Conclusion

Well, that’s it for today’s Summoner’s Guide. Keep looking forward to the next one, okay?

Until next time!

‘That’s not the devil. That’s America.’

BUFFALO — Less than 24 hours after a gunman stormed the grocery store where Tony Marshall worked for years, killing 10, Marshall was back at the Tops.

He flipped hot dogs on a grill positioned just outside the caution-tape perimeter, handing them out to mourners and passersby. As he worked, he wore a red shirt with a Tops Friendly Markets logo. “It’s a community store,” said Marshall, 59. “It’s meant everything to us.”

That was a sentiment shared by many in this mostly Black section of the city. For residents, the Tops was more than just a source of food and medicine. In a neighborhood with few stores or public spaces, the grocery store was a site for community events and giveaways, a hangout spot and meeting place.

“It was more than a store. It was a place where you could meet up with a friend, a relative, a girlfriend,” said Jerome Bridges, another Tops employee who survived the attack by barricading himself and several others in a conference room. “A place to hang out and shop and have a good conversation while you’re doing it.”

Many East Side residents said they would sometimes spend their leisure hours in the Tops parking lot, having long conversations with folks who seemed like complete strangers — strangers, that is, until they found out that they live a block apart from each other, or are extended family members, or frequent the same restaurant.

That sense of community was necessary, Marshall said, as a form of protection in a city where many Black people have faced a lifetime of discrimination and abuse.

Buffalo is the seventh-most segregated city in the country for Black Americans, according to a Brookings Institution report. The Black population had a median household income of $28,320 in 2019, according to a University of Buffalo report, with a 31 percent poverty rate. White residents had a $49,156 income and a 9.1 percent poverty rate.

“I’m crazy about Buffalo, I love it here; it can be a beautiful city,” said Regina Williams, 59, sitting in a car with her daughter and granddaughter near the Tops. But “it’s so segregated, they need to do something about it. They ain’t doing nothing about it. Nothing.”

In the first few days after the shooting, many residents here saw the horrific act of racial violence as one of many injustices threaded through their lives, and sometimes across generations.

Even the fact that the East Side has such a concentration of Black people is itself the result of discriminatory practices, residents said. And it was that segregation that turned the neighborhood into a target for the gunman, suspected to be an 18-year-old who espoused racist and white supremacist views.

“Somebody that is four hours away knows where to come to target Black people. You don’t even live in this community but you know where to come to get all Black people. That’s sad,” said Shirley Hart, carrying a plate with one of Marshall’s freshly grilled hot dogs. “It’s the experience of the Black person in America. We all deal with it, in some facet or another. It may not be to this extent on our hands, but we experience it.”

Buffalo’s downtown is on its West Side, hugging the Niagara River that separates New York from Canada. There are lush green parks with benches or art inside them. The streets are smooth. The trees are large and abundant.

But as you drive farther out, and especially once you hit Main Street, the scenery begins to change. The roads get rougher. The trees are fewer. Empty lots appear more frequently. Corner shops are scattered about, but there are also boarded-up shops.

Jefferson Avenue, on Buffalo’s East Side, is the liveliest strip in the area. The library, radio stations, barbershops and cigar shops are all on or near the street. So is the Tops.

The grocery store was built in 2003 after a sustained campaign from the community. Before it opened, neighbors had few supermarket options.

“Everybody goes to Tops because it’s in the ‘hood,” said Tara “Judy” Clark, 58, standing outside the Buffalo Community Fridge food pantry. She carried a tote bag of produce she had just picked up at the site.

James Baldwin nodded, adding that on Buffalo’s East Side there are few public parks or other spaces to gather, so the locals get to know each other at the Tops. And many residents avoid driving because they are afraid of the police, said Baldwin, 60.

“We like to stick close because we get pulled over if we venture out,” he said.

He said even just being outside on a street corner — as he was doing in that moment, with Clark nearby — makes him nervous because it exposes him to the police who patrol the area. You never know when an officer might come up and “make an issue out of it,” Baldwin said.

“The only time we can enjoy ourselves, or meet other people, is going into stores,” Clark said. Now, she is afraid to go, worried that a shooter might once again target her community.

“The devil was really, really busy in that man,” she said.

Baldwin quickly replied: “That’s not the devil. That’s America. They made him, they brought him up, they put him there.”

Buffalo’s large and vibrant Black community can trace its roots back to the early and mid-1900s, when Black people fleeing the racist violence of the South came to Buffalo as part of the Great Migration. They were attracted to its tranquility, the freedom it offered from Jim Crow laws, and the abundance of working-class jobs. Buffalo was once one of the largest hubs for producing steel and milling flour, and it was a railroad center.

As the Black community grew, redlining, urban renewal and other practices relegated it to the East Side, which became the beating heart of Black life in Buffalo. It has “lots of cultural history that goes way, way back, mostly focused around the African American community,” said Carl Nightingale, a professor of Buffalo history. “Full of all kinds of wonderful blues clubs, jazz clubs, hip-hop clubs, barbecue joints, soul food places.”

Since then, the community has been fighting to achieve recognition and equal status. But the setbacks have been numerous.

In 1958, officials built the Kensington Expressway, a highway project that effectively cut the neighborhood off from the rest of the city. Many of the mom-and-pop corner stores and boutiques that relied on the traffic to and from downtown for business had to shut their doors.

In 1972, the Buffalo Bills moved from the East Side to the suburbs. Several businesses that served the football stadium’s visitors were forced to close.

To this day, if you drive along the roads that were once heavily traveled by city commuters, the old structures remain — boarded-up storefronts and abandoned homes. Long, empty city blocks filled with grass and trash.

The latest battle is gentrification. Some locals said the government is luring luxury apartments and high-rises to the city’s downtown, which is causing home prices to soar around the city. East Side residents worry that they will be priced out of their own neighborhood.

“They building it up in the community, and the people living in the community can’t even afford it,” said Angela Stewart, 61, a pastor who grew up on the East Side but no longer lives there. “I think that’s kind of crazy. How are they ever supposed to get better if you’re going to treat them that way?”

Residents say police brutality is also a concern. Yvonne King, who lives close to the Tops, said she drives her 16-year-old son to and from school even though it’s only a few blocks, because she fears the police.

Despite the hardships, the community has blossomed in some ways.

In 2007, members of the East Side formed the Buffalo United Front to address the issues in their community, from policing to food insecurity and education.

In 2016, the East Side Bike Club came alive. Every Saturday, East Siders slip on neon T-shirts and ride bicycles — with donated ones for those who don’t have their own — across the city. As cars honk in support, the residents are able to see different parts of their community and learn a new way to exercise or transport themselves.

The club has workshops for residents to learn the rules of the road and how to fix their own bikes.

On Saturday, they’ll be at Martin Luther King Jr. Park at 9:30 a.m., riding around their East Side neighborhood.

They’ll pass the Tops that was once a source of community and food. They’ll mourn the people they lost and remember another East Side institution taken from them — this time, hopefully, only temporarily.

“This is America. The system wasn’t built for us, it was built on our backs,” Hart said. “It’s sad, but unfortunately we’re just used to it, and we deal with the hand we were dealt.”

Denzel talks about consoling Will Smith at Oscars

Denzel Washington
Photo: Kevin Winter (Getty Images)

Amidst the chaos that ensued at the Oscars on Sunday night—after-you-know-who abruptly took the stage to you-know-what you-know-whom straight in the face—one of the most calming presences in the Dolby Theater appears to have been Denzel Washington. The veteran actor was one of a few A-listers who joined ostensible Best Actor rival Will Smith in the aftermath of his altercation with comedian Chris Rock; his influence was soothing enough that Smith thanked him during his tearful acceptance speech a few minutes later, saying that Washington had told him, “At your highest moment, be careful, that’s when the devil comes for you.”

Now Washington has gone into a bit more detail about the devil and what went down that night, talking with pastor T.D. Jakes at Jakes’ Leadership Summit this weekend, and revealing that he, Smith, and Tyler Perry had prayed together during the stop-down after the slap. Describing the evening, Washington told Jakes, “There’s a saying: When the devil ignores you, then you know you’re doing something wrong. The devil goes, ‘Oh, no, leave him at home.’ My favorite. Conversely, when the devil comes at you, maybe it’s because you’re trying to do something, right. And for whatever reason, the devil got ahold of the circumstance that night.”

Washington declined to say what, exactly, the three men prayed about. But, “There but for the grace of God, go any of us. Who are we to condemn? I don’t know all the ins and outs of the situation, but I know the only solution was prayer.” (Also: A meaningful, shoulder-touching conversation with Bradley Cooper, who was also one of a handful of people who talked to Smith immediately after the slap.)

Fallout from the incident continues to develop; Smith resigned from The Academy last night, meaning he’ll no longer be eligible for Oscars voting going forward. (He also almost certainly won’t be asked back for the traditional job of handing out the Best Actress award next year.) While accepting his resignation, Academy president Dave Rubin noted that Smith will still be subject to disciplinary proceedings from the body later this month.

Devil May Cry Director Teases New Game

Hideaki Itsuno is teasing a new game. For those that don’t know, Itsuno is a director and designer for Capcom, and is responsible for shepherding the Devil May Cry and Dragon’s Dogma. Beyond this, he’s also worked on and influenced series like Power Stone, Street Fighter, and Darkstalkers. While he’s not as well known as some of the biggest video game directors and creators in Japan, like Hideo Kojima and Hidetaka Miyazaki, he’s a prominent figure in the industry and on his way to hall-of-fame status. Suffice to say, when he teases a new game, many pay attention, particularly Devil May Cry and Dragon’s Dogma fans.

Over on Twitter, Itsuno provided an end-of-the-year update whilst wishing everyone a happy new year. To this end, Itsuno notes “the next project is definitely ahead of last year,” which is to say, it’s made progress. Adding to this, Itsuno asks his fans to “please look forward to it.”

Unfortunately, Itsuno doesn’t say what this project is. According to various rumors, it’s the long-awaited sequel to Dragon’s Dogma, which would make sense given the IP is getting the Netflix anime treatment. That said, given the success of Devil May Cry 5, Itsuno’s most recent game, Devil May Cry 6 shouldn’t be ruled out either. And of course, the mystery game could be a new IP or a return to one of the aforementioned IPs, but these two possibilities seem unlikely.

As always, we will keep you updated. Right now, there’s no word of when this game will be revealed. Could be in 2022, but there’s nothing to the tweet above that suggests as much.

Pope says devil taking advantage of pandemic in Palm Sunday service

Pope FrancisPope FrancisPope cuts salaries for cardinals, clerics in move to save other jobs Pope warns of organized crime trying to cash in on pandemic Pope compares racism to a virus MORE reflected on the coronavirus during Palm Sunday services, where he said the devil is “taking advantage” of the pandemic.

“The Devil is taking advantage of the crisis to sow distrust, desperation and discord,” Francis said at St. Peter’s Basilica, which was almost empty because of coronavirus restrictions.

He added that the pandemic has brought physical, psychological and spiritual suffering.

Francis recognized that this year was the second time Christians were forced to live Holy Week amid the pandemic. He said that while last year people were “shocked,” this year communities are “more under pressure.”

“Last year we were shocked. This year we are more under pressure and the economic crisis has become heavy,” Francis said.

Around 120 members of the practicing faith joined the pope and approximately 30 cardinals in the basilica to participate in Sunday’s mass, according to Reuters, which is an extreme downsize from the tens of thousands of people who would normally fill St. Peter’s Square for an outdoor ceremony.

According to Reuters, nearly everyone who took part in the mass, aside from the pope and the choir, wore masks.

New lockdown restrictions went into effect in Italy earlier this month. Over Easter weekend, the entire country will be bound by a national lockdown.

In January, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis and his predecessor, Pope Emeritus Benedict, received their first doses of the coronavirus vaccine.
