Modi seeks detailed inquiry as India bridge toll rises to 135

  • Modi visits site in home state
  • Search continues for third straight day
  • One more person still believed missing – official

MORBI, India, Nov 1 (Reuters) – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanded lessons be learned as he visited the site of a bridge collapse that killed 135 people and met some of the injured in hospital on Tuesday.

Army, navy and national disaster response force teams continued their search while locals gathered on the banks of the Machchhu river in Modi’s home state of Gujarat.

The colonial-era suspension foot bridge in Morbi was packed with sightseers – many in town to celebrate the Diwali and Chhath Puja festivals – when it gave way on Sunday evening, sending people plunging about 10 metres (33 feet) into the water.

A top police official told Reuters that about 200 people were on the bridge when it collapsed. Local municipality officials said tickets for about 400 people had been sold, although not necessarily to be on the bridge at the same time.

“The prime minister said the need of the hour is to conduct a detailed and extensive inquiry which will identify all aspects relating to this mishap,” Modi’s office said in a statement as he saw the scene of the disaster.

“He also added that the key learnings from the inquiry must be implemented at the earliest.”

Top opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, from the Congress party, said earlier he refused to politicise the incident, but in the capital New Delhi dozens of protesters demanded the resignation of the Gujarat state chief and called for more compensation.

“The country is angry today that around 150 people have died in Morbi but this government did nothing apart from shedding crocodile tears,” an unidentified protester shouted. Police detained the crowd within minutes.

The protesters called for compensation of 2 million rupees ($24,000) for all victims – the injured and the families of those killed. So far the state and central governments have offered 600,000 rupees ($7,000) for the kin of those who lost their lives.

Local residents at the scene on Tuesday told Reuters they feared the death toll could rise further.

GT Pandya, a senior administrative official in Morbi, said a person who was injured had died from their injuries on Tuesday, taking the toll to 135. One person was still missing according to the authorities’ estimate, he said.

Gujarat, which declared a day of mourning on Wednesday, said in a statement that 152 people had been discharged from the hospital while 17 were still undergoing treatment.

The bridge – 233 metres in length and 1.25 metres wide – was originally built in 1877 and had been closed for six months for repairs until last week.

CCTV footage of the incident showed a group of young men trying to rock the bridge from side to side while others took the photos before they tumbled into the river below as the cables gave way.

Police arrested nine people on Monday under penal code sections including culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Those arrested included ticketing clerks accused of letting too many people onto the bridge and contractors that had been in charge of repair work.

U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping were the latest to send condolences for the loss of lives, many of whom were children.

Harvey Weinstein Sighed, Shook Head As Accuser Detailed Alleged Rape

  • Harvey Weinstein’s LA trial on rape charges continued Tuesday with witness testimony.
  • One of Weinstein’s accusers described in harrowing detail her alleged assault in February 2013.
  • Weinstein reacted in court with a head shake after she said she was afraid he might have killed her.

Harvey Weinstein visibly reacted in court on Tuesday as one of his accusers testified in harrowing detail about the assault she says she suffered at his hands.

The disgraced mogul’s Los Angeles trial on rape charges continued Monday with opening arguments and the start of witness testimony. LA County prosecutors have charged Weinstein with 11 counts of sexual assault stemming from allegations by five different women who accused the one-time producer of abusing them in LA hotels between 2004 and 2013.

Weinstein is already serving a 23-year sentence in a New York prison following an East Coast trial but faces an additional life sentence heading into the West Coast proceedings. He has denied the charges and pleaded not guilty.

All five women are expected to testify against Weinstein during what will likely be a weeks-long trial. Several of Weinstein’s female accusers are using pseudonyms in court.

The first woman to take the stand, identified as Jane Doe 1, continued her testimony on Tuesday morning after she broke down in court on Monday afternoon. She began the day by apologizing for her emotional outburst, telling the court she “can’t control this.”

Jane Doe 1, an actress who lived in Italy, has accused Weinstein of raping her in a hotel room in February 2013 during the Los Angeles Italia Film Festival. She told the jury on Monday that he showed up unannounced to her hotel room late at night and forced his way inside.

She wasn’t initially fearful, she said, but became scared when he began to talk about a massage: “I felt guilty I did or said something to make it seem okay,” she testified.

Jane Doe 1 testified in disturbing detail about the assault, during which she said Weinstein forced her to perform oral sex and raped her in a bathroom, despite her pleas for him to stop. She said she was terrified, disgusted, and panicked as she tried to fend him off, but credited his large size with her inability to avoid the assault or fight back.

She told the courtroom that she considered trying to run away or even hitting Weinstein with a lamp, but was frozen in fear.

“I regret this a lot,” Jane Doe 1 testified, saying that her body felt frozen. “My body wouldn’t listen to me. I was scared he’d kill me.”

In court at this moment, Weinstein reacted to her testimony by shaking his head and sighing.

Jane Doe 1 paused several times throughout her graphic testimony to take deep breaths in an apparent effort to maintain composure.

“I wanted to die,” she said as she recounted the experience. “It was humiliating, miserable. I didn’t fight. I just remember how he looked in the mirror, telling me to look at him. I wish it never happened to me.”

“I wasn’t there in my head,” she added. “I was praying.”

After the assault, Jane Doe said Weinstein cleaned himself with a towel and acted like nothing happened. He complimented her and then warned her not to say anything to anyone, she testified.

“I was feeling — and I still have this feeling — very guilty,” she said. “Humiliated.”

Jane Doe 1 didn’t go to the police until October 2017, after she was inspired by her own 16-year-old daughter’s experience with sexual harassment, she said. When prosecutors asked why she waited so long to report, she said she had been afraid.

“It is hard to live with this guilt. I realized he must be somebody bad to do this to me,” she testified. “I was afraid for my life, for my kids, for my reputation.”

An Incredibly Detailed Look At The C8 Corvette Z06

When the C8 Corvette Z06 was revealed, the internet went absolutely wild for it. More power than the last Z, from a naturally-aspirated engine that revved to 8,600 RPM? It had all the makings of a masterpiece. And, as the reviews have come out, it seems that’s exactly what Chevy built. But how did the company do it? What did it take to build that engine, to make the chassis accommodate it, and combine both into a package cohesive enough to sell?

If you want those answers, you’re in luck. The guys over at Savagegeese have put together a massive documentary on the creation of the new Z06, interviewing engineers, designers, and more to get the full picture of the car’s creation. It’s nearly an hour long, full of everything from interviews to first-drive impressions and track driving. And, oh yeah, that exhaust note.

2023 Corvette C8 Z06 | Making Cars Great Again

Few people on YouTube will go as in-depth on a car as the folks from Savagegeese, and their dedication always shows in the end product. This documentary is a prime example, with more detail and craftsmanship than you’re likely to find nearly anywhere else. You can always tell when someone really cares about what they’re making, and few care care more than these two.

So why not start your weekend with a viewing of the most intensive Z06 documentary on the internet? Grab some dinner, sit down in front of the TV, and learn all about the difficulties GM’s engineers faced in making a high-revving flat-plane supercar usable and comfortable as a daily driver. After all, that golf bag storage means nothing if you don’t want to take the car out to the course, right?

Stunning Detailed Image Of Moon Captured By Astrophotographer Leaves Internet Mesmerised

The photo garnered more than 62,000 upvotes and around 1,000 comments.

An astrophotographer recently captured a breathtaking clear photo of the Moon, revealing countless crater marks and ridges illuminated by the Sun. Internet user Darya Kawa Mirza shared the image on Reddit on October 1, with a caption, “One of the sharpest moon image[s] I ever captured through a 8-inch telescope.”

The image showed the illuminated section of the Moon in great detail. It also showed that the Moon is not entirely white and grey, even though it may seem that way when seen from Earth with the naked eye.

Take a look at the picture below:

Since being shared, the photo has garnered more than 62,000 upvotes and around 1,000 comments. “Nice dude, its so sharp and the colors are really pleasant. Great work,” wrote one user. “This is the best photo of the moon ever,” said another.

A third commented, “Never seen such a beautiful picture of the moon before. Stunning,” while a fourth added, “That’s a crispy moon right there. Amazing work!”

Speaking to Newsweek, the astrophotographer said that they captured the image using a Celestron NexStar 8SE with a Canon EOS 1200D attached to it.

“I started shooting 360 raw images then I combined them into one to reveal the color and increase the sharpness as well as the clarity of the surface,” Darya Kawa Mirza said, adding, “Keep in mind this is a cropped version from the original one. I mainly use photoshop to merge all my images”.

New NASA Pic of Jupiter’s Icy Moon Europa Is the Most Detailed One Yet

Steven Hobbs via Getty

NASA’s Jupiter-orbiting space probe Juno just snapped the most high resolution pic of one of the gas giant’s moons yet.

The spacecraft captured a close-up shot of the icy Europa during a flyby on September 29 using its Stellar Reference Unit (SRU), a star-tracker camera used to help orient Juno. The image reveals a 93-mile by 125-mile section of the moon’s surface that includes crisscrossing ice ridges along with dark spots that researchers believe could be indicating a volcanic eruption below.

“This image is unlocking an incredible level of detail in a region not previously imaged at such resolution and under such revealing illumination conditions,” Heidi Becker, the lead co-investigator for the SRU, said in a press release. She added that the instrument helps reveal insights into how the Jovian moons were formed and how the icy crust was shaped over time.

Aside from giving greater insight into Europa, the image is also the bellwether of future projects planned for Juno to explore Jupiter’s moons. The probe was originally slated to finish its prime mission to study the gas giant in 2021. However, it received a mission extension to continue studying Jupiter and its moons into 2025. Before it snapped the shot of Europa, it also took a stunning picture of the moon Ganymede in June 2021.

“With this flyby of Europa, Juno has now seen close-ups of two of the most interesting moons of Jupiter, and their ice shell crusts look very different from each other,” Scott Bolton, Juno’s principal investigator, said in the press release. “In 2023, Io, the most volcanic body in the solar system, will join the club.”

So while the James Webb Space Telescope continues to garner all the praise from its spectacular images, Juno is a good reminder that NASA still has a few other tricks up their sleeve. The craft’s mission extension will also assure that we continue to learn as much as we can about the gas giant and its moons well into the future.

Ezra Miller’s ‘Messiah’ complex detailed in disturbing new report

Ezra Miller’s troubles are detailed in a new Vanity Fair report. (Photo: Reuters)

Ezra Miller is the subject of a new Vanity Fair exposé, which looks at the 29-year-old actor’s “dark spiral” over the past few years. More than a dozen people were interviewed for the lengthy report, some of whom claim Miller suffers from Messiah delusions.

Miller’s erratic behavior first spilled into the public while they were in Iceland in 2020. The Flash star, whose pronouns are they/them, choked two strangers with one incident going viral after it was caught on film. An insider who was with Miller around this time told Vanity Fair: “[They’d] talk about the metaverse and the medicine and how they’re the Messiah and what [their] work is here. They say their spiritual practice is to be among the people — which means party. So, when in Iceland, [they were] out nonstop. [Their] favorite were raves, where [they’d] go on benders for two or three days at a time.”

Miller has been accused of cult-like behavior and grooming young women. Activist Tokata Iron Eyes is among those who has been traveling around with Miller in recent months. Tokata’s parents went public and accused the actor of brainwashing and assaulting their daughter. (Tokata has denied this in interviews.) Tokata’s mother, Jumping Eagle, said she has heard about Miller’s supposed Messiah complex.

“They say they are some kind of messiah, and they’re going to lead an Indigenous revolution,” Jumping Eagle told Vanity Fair. Miller is not Native American, but has frequently spoken out against people appropriating the culture.

“[Miller] professes that [they walk] through this world with an Indigenous humility and spiritual awareness,” one “Indigenous insider” alleged. “But, point of fact, [they don’t] at all. Because [they don’t] care.”

Multiple sources claimed to the magazine that Miller was verbally and emotionally abusive while referring to themself as both Jesus and the devil. According to one insider, the actor invoked the superhero they play “claiming that the Flash is the one who brings the multiverses together just like Jesus.”

Another peculiar anecdote buried in the investigative report involves Susan Sarandon. While describing the Miller’s Vermont farm, where weed, guns and Flash figurines are purportedly rampant, there is an altar they like to use.

“A lot of times [Miller] makes the women put their cellphones on the altar when they come in, and other offerings,” a longtime friend claims to the magazine. “Ezra freaked out recently… demanding that Susan Sarandon come pay tribute to [their] altar because she didn’t invite Ezra to a dinner party.”

A rep for Miller countered to Vanity Fair that Sarandon and the actor “are dear friends” and that Miller “would probably call this [anecdote] total bullshit if asked.” (A rep for Sarandon did not respond to Yahoo Entertainment’s request for comment.)

Miller’s former fiancée, Erin, participated in the story and said that Miller “wasn’t violent or physically abusive toward anyone” when they were together. The couple dated in 2016.

“For years [they] convinced me and all our friends that I was abusive…. But looking back, I would be calling out [their] disrespect and [they] wouldn’t take responsibility and just call me abusive because of my reaction. I could have handled it better. I didn’t know the term gaslight back then. I was emotionally f***ed up for years,” Erin shared. She added that Miller broke up with her after a spiritual adviser told them that she was a parasite.

“I can make excuses for [them] all day, but I don’t want to anymore,” she added. “The illusions of grandeur need to be called out. I will love Ezra always, and I don’t want [them] to continue down this dark road.”

Last month, after Miller’s most recent arrest, the actor announced they started “ongoing treatment” for “complex mental health issues.” According to the magazine, the treatment just involves therapy.

“They are taking their therapy and treatment very seriously,” Miller’s rep said.

The move was a last ditch effort to save next year’s blockbuster film The Flash, which will be Miller’s biggest movie yet. Warner Bros. is moving forward with the tentpole despite the mounting negative press about its star.

“The notion that The Flash was at risk was a wake-up call,” Miller’s rep added.

Judge orders release of detailed list of property seized in Trump FBI search

West Palm Beach, Florida — A federal judge on Thursday ordered the release of a detailed list of the property seized during the FBI’s search at former President Donald Trump’s South Florida residence last month, while reserving judgment on whether to appoint an outside party to review the documents.

Federal prosecutors initially submitted a property receipt to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida on Tuesday, though it was filed under seal. The Justice Department told the court in a separate filing it was prepared to release the receipt to the public given the “extraordinary circumstances” of the case and provide it “immediately” to Trump.

Trump’s legal team said they did not oppose unsealing the detailed inventory. It remained sealed as of Thursday afternoon.

Last month, the Justice Department agreed to release a more generalized version of the list, along with the warrant used to justify the search. That inventory revealed that the FBI seized 11 sets of documents containing material marked as classified, including four sets that contained documents marked “top secret,” in the Aug. 8 search at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s estate.

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, who is overseeing Trump’s lawsuit stemming from the Aug. 8 search, ordered the release of the detailed inventory during a hearing on Thursday. Justice Department lawyers and members of Trump’s legal team appeared for arguments over whether the judge should appoint a “special master” to review the documents seized by federal agents.

Cannon did not issue a decision on the special master from the bench but said she will issue a written order “in due course.” She seemed potentially inclined to block the Justice Department from accessing the seized materials should she appoint a special master, but appeared open to allowing the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to continue its assessment of the documents for potential national security risks.

During the hearing, federal prosecutors said an FBI filter team, a group of agents responsible for sifting through and setting aside documents that may be privileged, reviewed 520 pages from 64 sets of documents. The records were taken from a storage room at Mar-a-Lago and Trump’s office, known as the “45 Office” by the Justice Department, they said.

Jay Bratt, the top counterintelligence official at the Justice Department, and Juan Antonio Gonzalez, the U.S. Attorney in Miami, told Cannon that the “vast majority” of records taken during the search are likely not privileged, but investigators acted out of an “abundance of caution” in separating those that may be.

Bratt also revealed that on the morning after the search, Trump’s team asked the Justice Department for the appointment of a special master, which prosecutors declined. Trump’s team made “no subsequent request” for a special master until filing their lawsuit, Bratt said, and was advised that the filter team was in place.

Jim Trusty, one of Trump’s lawyers, argued that in addition to asserting attorney-client privilege over some of the records, the former president is also asserting executive privilege over others.

The Justice Department, however, pushed back on Trump’s claims that the seized records may be covered by executive privilege, arguing in legal filings and before the court that the former president never asserted executive privilege over documents retrieved by the National Archives and Records Administration in mid-January, nor when it turned over sensitive documents to federal investigators in response to a grand jury subpoena in June.

Federal prosecutors have also argued an assertion of executive privilege by a former president against a sitting president who waives the privilege is untenable as the records belong to the government, not the individual.

Regarding the special master, Trusty called the government’s concerns a “fake boogeyman,” saying the review process “doesn’t have to take weeks or months.”

“What is the harm they’re worried about? What could justify this objection?” Trusty asked. “They don’t want a mutually respected third party to make sure they got it right.”

Trump’s new attorney, former Florida Solicitor General Christopher Kise, appealed to the judge, saying she was in “a unique position to restore order, confidence.”

“We need, respectfully, to lower the temperature on both sides,” Kise said. “We need to take a deep breath.”

The former president has publicly asserted that he declassified much of the seized materials, but Bratt said that had no bearing on the violations the Justice Department is investigating.

“Classification is different from national defense information,” Bratt said, referring to the records investigators collected. “We are dealing with over 300 records here.”

“This was a valid warrant. This was a lawful search,” he added.

Russia’s ‘filtration’ system in Ukraine detailed in new reports

Comment

Moscow and its separatist allies in Ukraine have forcibly transferred hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians to Russia since the start of the war, according to U.S. officials and human rights investigators, sending many through a vast and punitive “filtration” system that includes detentions, interrogations and mass data collection.

The system operates in Russian-occupied areas and is overseen by the Kremlin, which is using “advanced technology” to gather data on Ukrainian citizens, a State Department official said in a briefing with reporters on Wednesday.

In recent days, two reports — from the New York-based Human Rights Watch and Yale University’s Humanitarian Research Lab — have shed new light on the scale of the filtration network and its impact on civilians. Both reports say there is evidence the system violates the laws of war.

Ukraine says Russia forcibly relocated thousands from Mariupol. Here’s one dramatic account.

The forcible transfer or deportation of civilians from occupied territory is prohibited under the Geneva Conventions, which regulate the conduct of armed conflict. Moscow denies allegations it has forcibly relocated residents — instead claiming that Russian forces are “protecting” civilians from Ukrainian troops.

“We do have information that officials from Russia’s presidential administration are overseeing and coordinating these filtration operations,” Emma Gilligan, a senior expert with the State Department’s Office of Global Criminal Justice, told reporters Wednesday.

“We also know that Russia is using advanced technology to facilitate filtration processes, including for the purposes of collecting data on Ukrainian citizens,” she said.

In its report released Thursday, Human Rights Watch described the filtration system in Ukraine as a “mass illegal data collection exercise” with “no legal underpinnings.”

Residents are funneled to registration sites, where they are screened and released or detained. Some Ukrainians have disappeared, according to Human Rights Watch, or were deported to Russia without identification documents.

Video shows Russian ‘filtration camp,’ Mariupol mayor’s office says

Ukrainians who go through the system have had their phone contacts downloaded, fingerprints and photographs taken and passport numbers collected, according to the Yale report, which was published last week.

The researchers said they found “with high confidence” that Russian and allied forces in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine have used 21 sites for “filtration operations.”

The sites include registration points, temporary holding facilities, interrogation centers and prisons for long-term detention.

The scale of the filtration system is “significant,” Nathaniel Raymond, executive director of the Humanitarian Research Lab, said at the same briefing with reporters on Wednesday. The lab’s report is part of the Conflict Observatory, a State Department-supported initiative to document Russian war crimes in Ukraine.

One of the locations identified by the report includes a school in Bezimenne, a village east of Mariupol. In May, The Washington Post geolocated video clips showing the school, where men forcibly taken from Mariupol were detained, made to sleep on the floor and threatened with torture and execution, according to a Telegram post accompanying the footage.

Satellite images and videos also verified by The Post in March showed Russian-backed forces building a tent city in the area. Russian authorities described it at the time as a “life-supporting” center for refugees from Mariupol, while Ukrainian leaders accused Russia of taking residents to “filtration camps” against their will.

According to Human Rights Watch, some Ukrainians traveled to Russia voluntarily, including men who wanted to avoid martial law in Ukraine, which bars most military-age men from leaving the country.

It remains unclear exactly how many Ukrainians have been deported to Russia, or even subjected to the “filtration” screening process. In July, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that Russia had deported 900,000 to 1.6 million Ukrainian citizens — and that many of those “forcibly deported,” including 260,000 children, have ended up in Russia’s Far East.

In late June, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk put the number of Ukrainians forcibly moved to Russia at 1.2 million, while Russia has said nearly 2.5 million Ukrainian “refugees” had moved to the country.

Still, much remains unknown about the filtration system, including how Russian authorities are using the data they collect and where many who were detained or transferred to Russia have ended up.

“This report is really to serve as a foundation for further investigation, advocacy and hopefully access by the international community to these sites that constitute, to be clear, a human rights emergency,” Raymond said.

‘Ridiculously detailed image’ of the moon honors Artemis 1 launch

You’ve never seen the moon quite like this.

Two astrophotographers have captured a spectacular photo of the moon with a mind-blowing resolution of 174 megapixels. The photo, called “The Hunt for Artemis,” is a tribute to NASA’s Artemis 1 moon mission, which is scheduled to launch atop the massive Space Launch System megarocket on Monday (Aug. 29). The image was taken by photographers Andrew McCarthy and Connor Matherne, both of whom shared the image and its close-ups on Instagram this week (McCarthy is @cosmic_background (opens in new tab) while Matherne is @cosmic.speck (opens in new tab))

“For this image, I teamed up with talented fellow astrophotographer @cosmic.speck to create the most ridiculously detailed moon image we could come up with,” McCarthy wrote on Instagram (opens in new tab). “The result is this 174 megapixel shot.”

“This is the highest resolution shot of the moon I have ever taken,” Matherne added on Instagram (opens in new tab). “I captured the color data while @cosmic.background captured the details. Combined, we ended up with an incredibly detailed photo of our lunar neighbor in stunning color.”

The image is a combination of more than 200,000 images by McCarthy (taken from Arizona) and 50,000 by Matherne (taken from Louisiana), and took a year to complete, according to PetaPixel. McCarthy said Matherne, who specializes is space colors, was responsible for the amazing hues seen in the image.

“The color in this image is real, but presented with increased saturation so it is easily visible to our eyes,” McCarthy wrote on Reddit (opens in new tab). “The reddish tones demonstrate areas rich in iron and feldspar, while the bluish areas are spots where the regolith is rich in titanium. Oxidation from the Earth’s atmosphere makes the colors appear like they do.”

McCarthy wrote that the image is dedicated to NASA and the teams behind the Artemis 1 mission, NASA’s first uncrewed test flight that will launch an Orion spacecraft around the moon on the brand new Space Launch System.

“In 9 days, a human-rated lunar rocket will launch from Cape Canaveral in Florida, demonstrating our capability for manned lunar missions for the first time in 50 years,” McCarthy wrote in his Instagram.

Artemis 1 is the debut flight for NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return astronauts to the moon by 2025. It will fly a 42-day mission that will take it to the moon, enter lunar orbit and then return to Earth in early October. While the mission is uncrewed, it is carrying experiments to test the space radiation environment on astronauts ahead of NASA’s crewed Artemis 2 flight around the moon in 2024.

The mission is also carrying 10 small cubesats to study the moon, space technology and the solar system. They will be deployed from the Space Launch System rocket’s upper stage after it reaches space.
