Beyond Meat inks McDonald’s, Yum deals

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Plant-based food company Beyond Meat will be partnering with several major fast-food chains in the coming years to expand offerings that could eventually include plant-based burgers, chalupas or toppings on a stuffed-crust pizza.

Beyond Meat on Thursday announced distribution agreements with McDonald’s as well as with Yum Brands, the parent company of KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut.

The company based in El Segundo, California, said it will develop plant-based products for all the restaurants, with exclusive menu items for each brand.

Beyond Meat had limited partnerships with McDonald’s and Yum Brands before, testing its products in limited geographies or with only an item or two. The companies are now expanding those ties.

Chicago-based McDonald’s will use the Beyond Meat partnership to roll out what it is calling the “McPlant” burger, as well as eventually plant-based pork, egg and chicken products.

Yum will use Beyond Meat to expand its “Beyond Fried Chicken” products, as well as pizza toppings at Pizza Hut. Yum, which is based in Louisville, Kentucky, did not lay out specific menu options for Taco Bell.

Plant-based food products that are designed to imitate meat have grown in popularity in the last few years and several large restaurant chains are now experimenting with food science to make healthier and more environmentally friendly products for customers. Burger King has partnered with Impossible Foods to provide products that use plant-based products as well.

Snag a refurbished Google Pixel 5 for under $600

The lowest price for a like-new refurbished Pixel 5 on Amazon is $610, but you can save more with this reader-exclusive deal from Daily Steals. It’s offering Verge readers a few options, actually. You can get either the unlocked or Verizon-locked phones in black or sage green (shown above). These units ship with a 90-day warranty and are in “Grade A” refurbished condition and may have minor scratches. They’ll ship with an aftermarket charger and cord.

One thing to note, if you’re wondering which to get: Verizon’s policy says it locks phones for 60 days after they’re purchased as new, then they automatically unlock. So, there’s a very high likelihood that the lock is no longer in effect on these refurbs, which would let you use the phone with any carrier. Daily Steals couldn’t confirm what their status is. But it’ll either arrived unlocked, or at worst, you’ll need to wait 60 days post-purchase. If you’re not happy with that solution, you can return the phone.

NFL 2021 trade rumors: Ranking 10 veteran QBs who could be available for blockbuster deals

If you haven’t noticed by now, the 2021 NFL offseason may as well have been tabbed the offseason of the quarterback. A year after movement among established signal-callers hit an unprecedented mark, this year’s free agency figures to bring just as much, if not a lot more, action under center. The Buccaneers just won a Super Bowl in large part due to a lucrative gamble at the QB position, and now all signs point to the league entering a never-before-seen era of QB empowerment, with multiple superstars either openly or indirectly hinting at relocation ahead of the 2021 market officially opening.

If your favorite team is looking for a new QB this offseason, the question isn’t whether one will be available, but which one most warrants a serious offer. So we decided to rank the biggest names rumored or reported to be available, or at least drawing inquiries ahead of the trade market’s official kickoff in March. We’re well aware that not all of these QBs will actually be dealt (the top two, in fact, still feel like pretty big long shots). But if a guy’s elicited trade calls, reportedly been shopped or has outright requested a move, he’s on the list. Here’s how we’d rank them:

Note: QB’s listed ages are for the start of the 2021 season.

Age: 32
Remaining contract: 3 years, $108M

There’s a reason he’s the least likely to be dealt; he’s unarguably one of the top three QBs in the game. Paying a historic price for a 32-year-old typically wouldn’t be wise, but imagine giving Wilson a decent offensive line. He could last another decade, and his presence alone would guarantee title hopes. At least 25 teams would call if Seattle actually made him available.

Logical landing spots: Cowboys, Colts, Dolphins, Panthers, Raiders

Age: 26
Remaining contract: 5 years, $168.1M

You could make a case that Watson is the better long-term bet over Wilson, but Russ has done it better, for longer and with more victories. Still, if/when the Texans budge, they’ll likely start trade talks by asking for three or four first-rounders, which is merited. Watson piled up lots of garbage-time stats in 2020, but he’s been a dynamic pocket passer for each of his first four seasons.

Logical landing spots: Bears, Broncos, Dolphins, 49ers, Jets, Panthers, Patriots

Age: 28
Remaining contract: 4 years, $134M

Wentz deserves a fair amount of blame for his stark 2020 regression, but the Eagles failed him at multiple turns, and just because they’ve mismanaged his expected departure doesn’t mean the former MVP candidate is totally damaged goods. His contract is palatable after 2021, and even if he’s long had a somewhat reckless playing style, he’s proven he can be a good, if not great, QB.

Logical landing spots: Bears, Broncos, Colts, Patriots

Age: 24
Remaining contract: 1 year, $9.8M

If you’re looking for a safer option, the No. 5 QB is your guy. But in terms of pure trade value, Darnold can’t be overlooked. Like Wentz, he deserves at least some blame for his rocky development. But the guy is so young, coming out from under such dysfunctional guidance, that he’s more than worth a one-year gamble. A little help and more discipline, and you’ve got a capable gunslinger.

Logical landing spots: Bears, Colts, 49ers

Age: 30
Remaining contract: 2 years, $42M

Logical landing spots: Bears, Colts, Patriots, Washington

If Raiders fans argue that Carr belongs two spots above, they’d be right … if a high floor is the main goal. Most people don’t give Carr enough credit for the quiet career resurgence he’s had under Jon Gruden, and on a true contender, he might be a consensus top-10 starter. But he’s also struggled in some key late-season spots. As a mid-term/stopgap option, you can do a lot worse.

Age: 23
Remaining contract: 3 years, $24.8M

The toughest of all the QBs to rank. On one hand, after a solid rookie year, Miami should be in no hurry to give him up (and likely won’t, unless Watson is taking his place). On the other, he was dangerously conservative after a college career alongside tons of studs, and there’s a reason his coach benched him repeatedly for a “relief pitcher” backup. What, exactly, is his ceiling?

Logical landing spots: Texans

Age: 29
Remaining contract: 2 years, $53.4M

Would San Francisco really part ways with Garoppolo only two years after he started a Super Bowl? Just ask the rival Rams, who were desperate to wash their hands of Jared Goff. Jimmy is more than capable of managing an offense, but he’s started more than six games in just one of his seven NFL seasons. The QB-friendly Niners will upgrade if they can, which tells you he’s mid-tier stuff.

Logical landing spots: Bears, Colts, Patriots

Age: 28
Remaining contract: 2 years, $49M

It’s fitting that he’s right behind Garoppolo, because their profiles are alarmingly similar. While Jimmy has been more prolific when healthy, both QBs have had major injury issues, thrived on high-percentage throws and generally settled into “serviceable but not elite” territory. Bridgewater is a good locker-room presence who can capitalize with a good supporting cast, but he needs lots of help.

Logical landing spots: Bears, Texans, Vikings

Age: 24
Remaining contract: 2 years, $4.1M

Like Tagovailoa, he’s such an odd one to rank, because the age, upside and rookie contract are favorable. Even more so than Tua, Lock has proven he can sling the ball downfield. The issue with him is decision-making; whereas Tagovailoa has looked timid, he’s often looked reckless. Denver reportedly dangling him in Matthew Stafford talks suggests the Broncos aren’t sold.

Logical landing spots: Patriots, Texans

Age: 27
Remaining contract: 1 year, $10.7M

Look, if you want to sell yourself on the idea of Mariota returning to his best Titans form, that’s great, but even that wasn’t exactly top-10 material. In a good system with good protection, he’s an intriguing dual threat that might have a mild career renaissance within him. But his best role is the one he carries now: A backup and spot starter. CLOSE

Thanks to Leslie Knope from “Parks and Recreation,” women are celebrating their friendships every year on Galentine’s Day.

USA TODAY

Searching for a sweet meal deal for your COVID Valentine or a heart-shaped pizza?

This year, many couples will celebrate Valentine’s Day differently than past years amid the coronavirus pandemic. Only 24% are planning on an evening out and 46% are avoiding in-person gatherings, according to the National Retail Federation’s annual survey.

But the big date night isn’t canceled. Two in five say they will have a special meal or celebration at home, the survey found.

Fancy dining and casual restaurants alike are offering special menus and deals for dining in and take out. Plus, you can eat your heart out with heart-shaped treats and meals.

Save better, spend better: We’ll tell you how and send money tips, advice right to your inbox. Sign up here

And with Valentine’s Day falling on a Sunday, many specials will be available all weekend. Saturday also is Galentine’s Day, a day created in 2010 by Amy Poehler’s character Leslie Knope on the TV show “Parks and Recreation.”

But what started as a tradition created on the NBC comedy has taken on a life of its own, spawning events around the world.

COVID Valentine: Celebrating Valentine’s Day during a pandemic with 6 awesome apps

“Every Feb. 13, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style,” Knope said on the show. “Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.”

The biggest awards and movie deals from the 2021 Sundance Film Festival

SALT LAKE CITY — As the 2020 movie awards season got underway Wednesday with the announcement of Golden Globe nominees, the Sundance Film Festival also wrapped up the first major event of the new movie year.

Awards for the 2021 Sundance festival were presented Tuesday evening. The festival, which was held virtually online for the first time, started on Thursday and ends today.

The Grand Jury Prize winners for this year’s Sundance were “CODA,” which took the top prize in the U.S. Dramatic competition, “Summer of Soul (…Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised)” in U.S. Documentary competition, “Hive” in World Cinema Dramatic competition and “Flee” in World Cinema Documentary competition.

“This was not a ‘virtual’ festival, it was a real festival and the power of these artists and their work was what made it so,” Sundance Film Festival Director Tabitha Jackson said in a news release Tuesday. “It has been a privilege to help this work meet new audiences and enter the culture with such fanfare, especially now, when breaking through the noise is harder than ever.”

“CODA,” “Summer of Soul” and “Hive” also took home audience awards, as well as the Indian documentary “Writing With Fire” and the drama “Ma Belle, My Beauty.” The full list of awards can be found at this link.

In addition to all the awards, “CODA” also brought home the bacon — Apple’s $25 million acquisition of the film smashed the previous record for biggest deal out of Sundance. That was previously held by the Andy Samberg comedy “Palm Springs,” which sold to Neon and Hulu at last year’s festival for a reported $22 million.

Sundance Institute CEO Keri Putnam also touted the creative work showcased at this year’s film festival.

“Watching people come together to connect and discuss exciting new work has been incredibly rewarding — and a resounding confirmation that great independent storytelling inspires rich conversation,” Putnam said.

Here’s a look at the rest of the deals reported out of Sundance this year so far.

‘Ailey’

Distributor Neon picked up the documentary “Ailey,” which is about the dancer and choreographer Alvin Ailey, for an undisclosed sum, according to the Hollywood Reporter. It’s directed by Jamila Wignot.

‘CODA’

“CODA,” Sian Heder’s drama about a child of deaf adults who is the only hearing member of her family, went for a record-breaking $25 million at Sundance, according to Variety. Apple Studios won the rights to distribute the film after a bidding war between several other major distributors, Variety reported.

‘Cryptozoo’

Dash Shaw’s eclectic adult animation film sold to Magnolia Pictures, according to Variety. The film follows two lovers who dash off to the woods for a date, stumbling upon a park full of fantasy creatures. It features voice acting from Lake Bell, Michael Cera and Zoe Kazan.

‘Flee’

Neon’s second pickup from this year’s Sundance is the animated documentary “Flee.” It sold to Neon in a partnership with Participant for a seven-figure deal, according to Deadline. Directed by Jonas Poher Rasmussen, “Flee” documents an Afghan refugee’s tale of persecution and escape.

‘Jockey’

Clifton Collins Jr. earned a Sundance special jury prize for best actor for “Jockey,” which sold to Sony Pictures Classics, according to Deadline. Collins plays an aging horse racer who is reconciling with his deteriorating health when he encounters a rookie rider who claims to be his long-lost son.

‘Playing With Sharks’

National Geographic Documentary Films bought distribution rights to the documentary “Playing With Sharks,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. The movie features Australian conservationist and filmmaker Valerie Taylor.

‘Superior’

Visit Films acquired the rights to distribute the neo-noir “Superior,” which features two twin sisters who meet under mysterious circumstances, according to Screen Daily.

Nick Cassavetes and Nic Cage appears in Prisoners of the Ghostland by Sion Sono, an official selection of the Premieres section at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. (Photo: Courtesy of Sundance Institute)

Deals completed before the festival began

  • “A Glitch In The Matrix”: Magnolia Pictures announced it acquired the documentary, which examines simulation theory, late last year, according to The Wrap.
  • “The Most Beautiful Boy In The World”: Juno Films acquired North American distribution rights for this documentary, Deadline reported. The movie documents the life of former child acting star Björn Andrésen.
  • “Prisoners of the Ghostland”: RLJE Films will release the zany Nicolas Cage action flick, according to The Wrap. The distributor previously released the art house titles “Mandy” and “Color Out Of Space,” which both also featured Cage.
  • “Together Together”: Bleecker Street acquired distribution rights for the comedy, which stars Ed Helms and Patti Harrison, according to Variety.

Kushner, deputy nominated for Nobel Peace Prize over Israel deals

Jared Kushner, the White House adviser under former President Trump, was nominated Sunday for the Nobel Peace Prize over his efforts in negotiating deals between Israel, the United Arab Emirates and other countries in the region over a hectic four-month period last year.

Reuters reported that Kushner and Avi Berkowitz, his former deputy, were nominated by Alan Dershowitz, the professor emeritus of Harvard Law School. Reuters called the deals the “most significant diplomatic breakthroughs in the Middle East in 25 years,” and many Trump supporters said the media downplayed their magnitude in order to hurt his chances at reelection.

The Trump administration brokered peace agreements between Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco. Kushner told Fox News in October that there have been “people in Washington for 30, 40 years” who were “never able to work on a single foreign transaction.”

He joked that peace deals are “much harder than President Trump is making them look.”

Kushner said “people have been very critical of the president over the last three years for whatever he does… but the reality is he’s taken a different approach on how to deal with Washington, he took a different approach in the Middle East and he’s put up results.”

Bahrain joined the United Arab Emirates at a festive White House ceremony in the fall marking the “Abraham Accords,” a pair of U.S.-brokered diplomatic pacts with Israel. While the UAE’s deal with Israel formally established ties, the agreement with Bahrain was less detailed and included a mutual pledge to follow suit.

TRUMP DECLARES ‘DAWN OF A NEW MIDDLE EAST’ AS HE PRESIDES OVER SIGNING OF HISTORIC DEALS

The Palestinians severed ties with the Trump White House, accusing it of being unfairly biased toward Israel. U.S. officials have in turn cultivated ties between Israel and Arab states, hoping to increase pressure on the Palestinians to reduce past demands in peace talks.

The Reuters report said that President Biden is in the process of reviewing Trump’s deals and mentioned that it is unclear if Trump’s exit from the White House will hurt Kushner’s chances of receiving the prize.

Dershowitz told Fox News in a statement, “The Nobel Peace Prize is not for popularity. Nor is it an assessment of what the international community may think of those who helped bring about peace. It is an award for fulfilling the daunting criteria set out by Alfred Nobel in his will. These men, and the Abraham accords, they helped produce, meet these criteria better than any other person or groups eligible for the award.”

Fox News’ Talia Kaplan and the Associated Press contributed to this report

There aren’t many brand-new deals to be found in this week’s dispatch, but go ahead and take a look if you haven’t been following them closely.

If you feel caught up on deals, here’s a reminder that you can hang out here to have a quiet moment from all of the ongoing GameStop and AMC stock drama. Then again, if this is the first time you’re hearing about all of that and want to hear more, check out my colleague Liz Lopatto’s Big Picture video that’s all about it.

Sony’s WH-1000XM4 headphones are $278, and well worth it

Once in a blue moon, Sony’s latest flagship wireless headphones with active noise cancellation and excellent sound see a deep discount. That’s happening now, actually, and you can save $72 on the WH-1000XM4 — headphones I’d spring for immediately if I wasn’t still well-served by their predecessor. This model is considerably better, though, with support for simultaneous Bluetooth connections, and it has an automatic pause function when you remove them.

I’ve listed a few links below, but this deal is also happening at Adorama, where you can get the headphones with a 20,800mAh power bank for no extra cost.

Razer’s cheaper Opus headphones are $60 off

For something far less expensive (and really, not all that different), Razer’s Opus wireless, noise-canceling headphones are $140 at Amazon. They’re normally $200. For this price, it’s a good deal considering these over-ear cans can automatically play and pause music when you put them on, and they have active noise cancellation and USB-C charging.

The Opus are Razer’s everyday noise-canceling headphones and come with a comfortable fit, USB-C charging, and good sound quality.

Get a simple smart clock with four smart bulbs for just $30

Best Buy is hosting a fantastic deal on a smart home starter kit of sorts. Lenovo’s Smart Clock Essential (review by Dan Seifert here) is usually $50 on its own, but it’s in this kit alongside a four-pack of C by GE white 60W LED bulbs that you can control with your voice via Google Assistant, which is what the Smart Clock Essential has built in.

Apple’s Magic Keyboard is still $100 off at Walmart

Walmart’s exclusive deal on the Apple Magic Keyboard has lasted far longer than I expected it to. Normally $299, it’s $199 now. It’ll work with the 11-inch iPad Pro or the latest iPad Air (also released in 2020, with USB-C charging). When you pop it on, it will grant your tablet its very own dedicated keyboard and trackpad. It essentially provides a laptop-like experience, in case you’re trying to get more done and don’t want to lug around too many devices.

This version of Apple’s Magic Keyboard can fit the iPad Pro (11-inch) or the new iPad Air that charges via USB-C. It provides a set of backlit keys and a trackpad so you can be more productive or perhaps horse around with more efficiency.

Exclusive: China’s Huawei in talks to sell premium smartphone brands P and Mate – sources

(Reuters) – China’s Huawei Technologies Co Ltd is in early-stage talks to sell its premium smartphone brands P and Mate, two people with direct knowledge of the matter said, a move that could see the company eventually exit from the high-end smartphone-making business.

The talks between the world’s largest telecommunications equipment maker and a consortium led by Shanghai government-backed investment firms have been going on for months, the people said, declining to be identified as the discussions were confidential.

Huawei started to internally explore the possibility of selling the brands as early as last September, according to one of the sources. The two sources were not privy to the valuation placed on the brands by Huawei.

Shipments of Mate and P Series phones were worth $39.7 billion between Q3 2019 and Q3 2020, according to consultancy IDC.

However, Huawei has yet to make a final decision on the sale and the talks might not conclude successfully, according to the two sources, as the company is still trying to manufacture at home its in-house designed high-end Kirin chips which power its smartphones.

“Huawei has learned there are unsubstantiated rumours circulating regarding the possible sale of our flagship smartphone brands,” a Huawei spokesman said. “There is no merit to these rumours whatsoever. Huawei has no such plan.”

The Shanghai government said it was not aware of the situation and declined to comment further.

The potential sale of Huawei’s premium smartphone lines suggests the company has little hope that the new Biden administration will have a change of heart towards the supply chain restrictions placed on Huawei since May 2019, the two people said.

The Shanghai government-backed investment firms may form a consortium with Huawei’s dealers to take over the P and Mate brands, according to the second person, a similar model to the Honor deal. Huawei is also likely to keep its existing P& Mate management team for the new entity, if the deal goes through, the two people said.

OVERCOMING U.S. CURBS

Huawei, the world’s biggest telecoms equipment vendor and No.2 smartphone maker, last November announced the sale of its budget phone brand Honor to a consortium of 30 dealers led by a company backed by the Shenzhen government.

The second source said the all-cash sale fetched more than 100 billion yuan ($15.5 billion). Honor declined to comment.

The Honor sale was aimed at keeping the budget brand alive, as sanctions slapped on Huawei by the United States had hampered the unit’s supply chain and cut off the company’s access to key hardware like chips and software such as Alphabet Inc’s Google Mobile Services.

Huawei may have a similar objective in pursuing the sale of the mobile brands. The two sources said that Huawei’s latest plans for the two high-end brands were motivated by insufficient chip supplies.

Washington says that Huawei is a national security threat, which Huawei has repeatedly denied.

On Friday, Honor indicated that the goal of the spin-off had been reached by announcing it had formed partnerships with chip makers such as Intel and Qualcomm and launched a new phone.

Last year, the company’s Consumer Business Group Chief Executive Richard Yu said U.S. restrictions meant Huawei would soon stop making Kirin chips. Analysts expect its stockpile of the chips to run out this year.

Huawei’s HiSilicon division relies on software from U.S. companies such as Cadence Design Systems Inc or Synopsys Inc to design its chips and it outsources the production to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), which uses equipment from U.S. companies.

The P and Mate phone series are among the top players in the higher-end smartphone market in China and compete with Apple’s iPhone, Xiaomi Corp’s Mi and Mix series and OPPO’s Find series.

The two brands contributed nearly 40% to Huawei’s total sales over the third quarter of 2020, according to market research firm Counterpoint.

Analysts have already noted recent insufficient supplies of the flagship P40 and Mate40 series due to a severe components shortage.

“We expect a continuous decline in sales of P and Mate series smartphones through Q1 2021,” said Flora Tang, an analyst at Counterpoint.

Today’s best tech deals: Apple Magic Keyboard, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and more

Today’s Dealmaster includes a notable discount on Apple’s Magic Keyboard accessory for iPads, with the model designed for the iPad Air and 11-inch iPad Pro down to $199. That’s $90 off the device’s usual street price and the steepest discount we’ve tracked to date. We were impressed with the Magic Keyboard because of its build quality and typing experience—it’s just obscenely expensive for a keyboard accessory, but this deal softens the blow somewhat.
Elsewhere, our deal roundup includes the lowest price we’ve seen on Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, a massive action-RPG we enjoyed last year; a nice discount on Eufy’s Indoor Cam 2K, an indoor security camera we recommended in our 2020 holiday gift guide; the latest iPad Air and Apple Watch; recommended gaming headsets and keyboards; and more. You can check out the full rundown below.
