NASA’s Perseverance Rover Completes Mars Sample Depot – Captures Amazing Variety of Martian Geology

Perseverance’s Three Forks Sample Depot Selfie: NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover took a selfie with several of the 10 sample tubes it deposited at a sample depot it is creating within an area of Jezero Crater nicknamed “Three Forks.” Credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS

Ten sample tubes, capturing an amazing variety of Martian geology, have been deposited on

Throughout its science campaigns, the rover has been taking a pair of samples from rocks the mission team deems scientifically significant. One sample from each pair taken so far now sits in the carefully arranged depot in the “Three Forks” region of Jezero Crater. The depot samples will serve as a backup set while the other half remain inside Perseverance, which would be the primary means to convey samples to a Sample Retrieval Lander as part of the campaign.

NASA Sample Retrieval Lander: This illustration shows a concept for a proposed NASA Sample Retrieval Lander that would carry a small rocket (about 10 feet, or 3 meters, tall) called the Mars Ascent Vehicle to the Martian surface. After being loaded with sealed tubes containing samples of Martian rocks and soil collected by NASA’s Perseverance rover, the rocket would launch into Mars orbit. The samples would then be ferried to Earth for detailed analysis. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech

Mission scientists believe the igneous and sedimentary rock cores provide an excellent cross-section of the geologic processes that took place in Jezero shortly after the crater’s formation almost 4 billion years ago. The rover also deposited an atmospheric sample and what’s called a “witness” tube, which is used to determine if samples being collected might be contaminated with materials that traveled with the rover from Earth.

The titanium tubes were deposited on the surface in an intricate zigzag pattern, with each sample about 15 to 50 feet (5 to 15 meters) apart from one another to ensure they could be safely recovered. Adding time to the depot-creation process, the team needed to precisely map the location of each 7-inch-long (18.6-centimeter-long) tube and glove (adapter) combination so that the samples could be found even if covered with dust. The depot is on flat ground near the base of the raised, fan-shaped ancient river delta that formed long ago when a river flowed into a lake there.

“With the Three Forks depot in our rearview mirror, Perseverance is now headed up the delta,” said Rick Welch, Perseverance’s deputy project manager at

Next Science Campaign

Passing the Rocky Top outcrop represents the end of the rover’s Delta Front Campaign and the beginning of the rover’s Delta Top Campaign because of the geologic transition that takes place at that level.

“We found that from the base of the delta up to the level where Rocky Top is located, the rocks appear to have been deposited in a lake environment,” said Ken Farley, Perseverance project scientist at Caltech. “And those just above Rocky Top appear to have been created in or at the end of a Martian river flowing into the lake. As we ascend the delta into a river setting, we expect to move into rocks that are composed of larger grains – from sand to large boulders. Those materials likely originated in rocks outside of Jezero, eroded and then washed into the crater.”

After five weeks of work, the sample depot was completed Jan. 24, 2023, the 687th day, or sol, of the mission. Credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech

One of the first stops the rover will make during the new science campaign is at a location the science team calls the “Curvilinear Unit.” Essentially a Martian sandbar, the unit is made of sediment that eons ago was deposited in a bend in one of Jezero’s inflowing river channels. The science team believes the Curvilinear Unit will be an excellent location to hunt for intriguing outcrops of sandstone and perhaps mudstone, and to get a glimpse at the geological processes beyond the walls of Jezero Crater.

More About the Mission

One of the key objectives for Perseverance’s mission on Mars is astrobiology, including caching samples that may contain signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will analyze the planet’s geology and past climate, lay the foundation for human exploration of the Red Planet, and be the first mission to gather Martian rock and soil samples.

Later NASA missions, in cooperation with ESA, will send spacecraft to Mars to collect these sealed samples from the surface and return them to Earth for in-depth analysis.

The Mars 2020 Perseverance mission is part of NASA’s Moon to Mars exploration approach, which includes Artemis missions to the Moon that will help pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet.

JPL, which is managed for NASA by Caltech, built and manages operations of the Perseverance rover.

Private Peregrine moon lander completes prelaunch testing

A private U.S. moon lander just cleared a big hurdle on the path toward its debut spaceflight this year.

The Peregrine lunar lander, built by Astrobotic, finished the last of its space qualification tests this month, the Pittsburgh-based company announced on Wednesday (Jan. 25). Now engineers are awaiting approval from United Launch Alliance (ULA) to ship Peregrine from Pittsburgh to Florida for mating to its United Launch Alliance (ULA) Vulcan Centaur rocket.

“These tests ultimately proved the quality of Peregrine’s design and workmanship,” Sharad Bhaskaran, Astrobotic’s mission director for Peregrine’s debut mission, said in a statement (opens in new tab). “Everyone worked diligently, even through holidays, for this incredible achievement.”

Peregrine’s launch is targeted for the first quarter of 2023 from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, but like all launch dates, that is subject to change depending on technical matters, weather and numerous other factors. The mission, the first liftoff for the new Vulcan Centaur, represents a new generation of moon efforts by private companies.

Related: NASA’s full plate of moon missions before astronauts can go

The Peregrine lander, laden with 11 NASA payloads, was selected for service through the agency’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program. NASA is employing private robotic landers, rovers and other spacecraft to work alongside Artemis program astronauts, who may be landing near the moon’s south pole as soon as 2025 on the Artemis 3 mission.

CLPS represents a new form of lunar exploration, as all successful moon landing efforts to date have been led by countries rather than private companies. But that is expected to change in a big way in the 2020s, as numerous missions are in development in the United States and in other countries.

The first few CLPS missions will be survey efforts ahead of landing astronauts, with future ones expected to be located at the lunar south pole as NASA builds up infrastructure for possible permanent settlement there. (The south pole appears to be rich in water ice, presenting an ideal spot for water-hungry machinery and astronauts as they could mine the precious resource locally instead of shipping it all the way from Earth.)

Which CLPS mission will arrive at the moon first isn’t yet clear, as numerous efforts are scheduled in the coming months. Besides Peregrine, Intuitive Machines plans to launch its Nova-C lander in the first quarter of 2023, for example.

Meanwhile, another country has a private mission already en route to the moon: The Hakuto-R lander, built by Tokyo-based company ispace, is scheduled to touch down in April. After it lands, Hakuto-R will deploy Rashid, a small rover provided by the United Arab Emirates’ space agency.

Georgia grand jury completes Trump election interference investigation

Comment

ATLANTA – An Atlanta-area grand jury investigating efforts by former president Donald Trump and his allies to overturn Trump’s 2020 election loss in Georgia has concluded its investigation, according to the judge overseeing the panel.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney issued a court order Monday morning saying the special grand jury had completed a final report on its investigation. He said the report was accepted by a majority of the county’s judicial bench and that the 26-member panel was being officially dissolved.

The Georgia criminal investigation into Trump and his allies, explained

The grand jury’s recommendations were not made public, including whether criminal charges should be filed. McBurney scheduled a Jan. 24 hearing to determine whether to release the report. His order noted the grand jury had “voted to recommend that its report be published” and appeared to make its release “mandatory” — though the judge said he would hear “argument” on the issue.

“The Court thanks the grand jurors for their dedication, professionalism, and significant commitment of time and attention to this important matter. It was no small sacrifice to serve,” McBurney wrote.

The special grand jury was investigating whether Trump and his allies violated Georgia law when they spread rumors about alleged election fraud in the state and pressured Georgia officials to undertake efforts that would change the results of the state’s presidential election, which Trump lost by fewer than 12,000 votes.

Over roughly six months, the special grand jury heard from dozens of witnesses. Several top Trump allies appeared before the panel, including Sen. Lindsey O.Graham (R-S.C.) and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. The grand jury also heard testimony from top Georgia officials including Gov. Brian Kemp (R) and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who were the subject of intense pressure campaigns from Trump and his allies as they sought to change the outcome of the election.

Under Georgia law, special grand juries cannot issue indictments but can issue a report making recommendations. Fulton County District Attorney Fani T. Willis, who opened the investigation in January 2021, is now expected to weigh those recommendations as she considers charges in the case.

Should Willis seek to file criminal charges, the district attorney would have to impanel a regular grand jury that considers criminal cases — a move that could precede any publication of the grand jury report.

A spokesman for Willis did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

TCU completes greatest upset in College Football Playoff history over Michigan in Fiesta Bowl 2022

USATSI

No. 3 TCU completed the biggest upset in College Football Playoff history after shocking No. 2 Michigan 51-45 and becoming the first Big 12 team to ever win a playoff game. The Horned Frogs came into the game as 8-point underdogs, according to Caesar’s Sportsbook.

Prior to TCU’s thrilling win, the biggest upset in CFP history came in the 2014 semifinal between Alabama and Ohio State when the No. 4 Buckeyes were 7-point underdogs to No. 1 Alabama in the Sugar Bowl but won 42-35 on their way to a national title. TCU was also considered a far bigger underdog than No. 4 seed Alabama was against No. 1 seed Clemson in 2017 when the Crimson Tide won 24-6 in the Sugar Bowl semi.

After giving up a 54-yard run to Donovan Edwards on the first play of the game, TCU took over in Glendale, Arizona. Safety Bud Clark had a pick six and fumble recovery in the end zone, while the Horned Frogs defense as a whole held the vaunted Wolverines rushing offense to just 132 yards on 39 carries after the first play. Heisman finalist quarterback Max Duggan had both two passing and two rushing touchdowns in the victory.

Michigan would have needed to put together the largest comeback in CFP history after going down by 19 points in the third quarter. However, quarterback J.J. McCarthy put together a handful of big-time throws to give the Wolverines a chance down the stretch. Michigan scored a touchdown with 3:18 remaining and got the ball back with a chance to take the lead, but TCU forced a turnover on downs to clinch the win.

Comebacks have not been in the Wolverines’ DNA during their magical two-year run. Michigan had not trailed by more than one score since its 34-11 loss to Georgia in the 2021 College Football Playoff. The biggest deficit Michigan has overcome during its two Big Ten championship runs are seven-point deficits to Ohio State and Illinois this season.

TCU now moves on to the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship in Los Angeles, California. The last team with the biggest upset in CFP history — 2014 Ohio State — went on to win the national championship. The Frogs have two national championships in program history, but none since 1938.
