Type-2 Diabetes signs: Scientists pinpoint common vegetable that can lower high blood sugar levels by 50 per cent

One in 10 people over the age of 40 in the UK are now living with Type 2 diabetes, which is a condtion that causes too much sugar in your blood. However, there is one common vegetable that can lower blood sugar levels by 50 per cent – and could see “potential use” in treating patients with diabetes.

People with Type 2 diabetes are not able to produce sufficient insulin from their pancreas to regulate blood sugar, which means that their blood sugar can reach dangerously high levels.

However, findings from 2015, presented at The Endocrine Society’s 97th annual meeting in San Diego, revealed that the extract of an onion bulb can “strongly lower” high blood sugar and total cholesterol levels when given alongside antidiabetic drug metformin.

Lead study author Anthony Ojieh of Delta State University in Abraka, Nigeria, said at the time: “Onion is cheap and available and has been used as a nutritional supplement. It has the potential for use in treating patients with diabetes.”

The researchers tested the theory on rats. In total, three groups of rats with medically induced diabetes were given various doses of the onion extract to see if it would enhance the drug’s effect.

The doses were 200mg, 400mg, and 600mg per kilogram of body weight. The researchers also gave the drug and onion to three groups of nondiabetic rats with normal blood sugar.

The study found that, of the diabetic rats, those given 400mg and 600mg per kilogram of body weight “strongly reduced” their blood sugar levels by 50 per cent and 35 per cent respectively compared with a baseline level.

The onion extract also lowered the total cholesterol level in diabetic rats, with the 400mg and 600mg having the greatest effects.

The study also found that the onion extract led to weight gain among the nondiabetic rats, but not the diabetic rats.

“Onion is not high in calories,” Ojieh explained. “However, it seems to increase the metabolic rate and, with that, to increase the appetite, leading to an increase in feeding.

“We need to investigate the mechanism by which onion brought about the blood glucose reduction. We do not yet have an explanation.”

CD Projekt’s share value has reportedly plummeted 75 per cent post-Cyberpunk 2077

CD Projekt – the publisher behind studio CD Projekt Red, developer of The Witcher games and, of course, Cyberpunk 2077 – has seen its share value plummet by over 75 per cent.

That’s according to Business Insider Poland, which says that the disastrous launch of Cyberpunk 2077 has wiped the value of the then most-valuable games company in Europe from over 40 billion Polish złoty – that’s around £7.11bn – to less than zł10 billion – about £1.77bn.

Cyberpunk 2077 Next-Gen Patch: The Digital Foundry Verdict.

The drop in CD Projekt’s value – whilst still remaining one of Poland’s most valuable companies – reportedly takes it back to a value last seen around 2017.

That means that Dying Light developer Techland – which is also based in Poland and thought to be worth around 10.6bn Polish złoty (£1.88bn) – is now seemingly worth more and continues to increase in value (thanks, PC Gamer) thanks to the release of Dying Light 2: Stay Human.

ICYMI, Quantic Lab, a company which provides quality assurance (QA) support, has responded to a claim it misled Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red over its work on the game.

A 14-minute YouTube video from a channel named Upper Echelon Gamers claimed the QA studio had placed junior members of its team on the project instead of seasoned veterans, and flagged too many minor bugs. These issues, the video claimed, impacted Quantic Lab’s work and therefore the overall game.

“Each project we undertake is unique with regard project requirements. Project direction is agreed and adjusted accordingly as per real time requirements with our clients,” Quantic Lab boss Stefan Seicarescu said in response. “Quantic Lab always strives to work with transparency and integrity with our industry partners.”

Eating chocolate SLASHES risk of dying young by 12 per cent, major study reveals

EATING chocolate cuts the danger of dying young by 12 per cent, a study says.

Regular consumers’ risk of fatal heart disease or cancer falls by up to 16 per cent.

Fans who munch the equivalent of two Dairy Milk bars a week were four times less likely to suffer diabetes than those who eat none.

Experts say chocolate can lower bad cholesterol and blood pressure and, to cap it all, devotees tend to be slimmer and more active.

Scientists say compounds in cocoa known as flavonoids boost the health of blood vessels.

Prof Jiaqi Huang, of the US National Cancer Institute in Maryland, said the study may “partially allay concerns regarding adverse health outcomes from low-to-moderate chocolate consumption”.

The British Heart Foundation said the study was not conclusive enough for it to recommend eating chocolate to lessen heart disease risk.

It said: “It’s fine to treat yourself now and again, but no single food or nutrient is more important than an overall balanced healthy diet.”

Breakthrough as male pill is 99 per cent effective in preventing pregnancy

A PILL for men could be closer — offering hope of new birth control options.

A non-hormonal drug was 99 per cent effective in preventing pregnancy in lab tests on mice.

A pill for men could be closer — offering hope of new birth control options

It targets a gene that produces retinoic acid — a form of vitamin A that fuels sperm development.

Human trials may start by the end of the year.

Most such drugs undergoing trials target the male sex hormone testosterone, which can lead to obesity and depression.

Lead author Abdullah Al Noman, of Minnesota University, US, said: “We wanted to develop a non-hormonal contraceptive to avoid these side-effects.”

At present, there are only two forms of contraception for men — condoms and vasectomies.

Condoms can only be used once and are not guaranteed to prevent impregnation.

Vasectomies are a form of surgical sterilisation that is expensive to reverse and is not always successful.

Health: Experts eliminate HIV in 40 per cent of mice with technique that forces virus out of hiding

New hope for a HIV cure? Scientists eliminate virus in 40% of mice by using a ‘kick and kill’ technique that forces it out of hiding and makes it vulnerable to injections of killer immune cells

  • Patients with HIV typically take antiretrovirals to supress the virus in their body
  • Such drugs do not kill the virus, however, but inhibit it at points in its ‘life cycle’
  • HIV lies dormant in certain immune cells, ready to emerge if treatment ceases
  • Experts led from UCLA have shown that the ‘kick and kill’ approach has promise
  • After activating the hiding virus, healthy natural killer cells are used to destroy it
  • The team are looking to make the treatment more effective before human tests

A ‘kick and kill’ strategy that forces the human immunodeficiency virus out of cells — leaving it vulnerable to injections of natural killer cells — offers hope of an HIV cure.

In laboratory tests on 10 mice the approach was found to eliminate the virus in 40 per cent of cases, a team from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) said.

According to the UN, an estimated 38 million people worldwide are presently living with HIV, with the virus having led to some 36 million deaths in recent decades.

If refined and proven safe and effective in human trials, the concept could remove the need for people with HIV to depend on ongoing courses of antiretroviral drugs.

A ‘kick and kill’ strategy that forces the human immunodeficiency virus (pictured) out of cells — thereby making it vulnerable to existing antivirals — offers hope of an HIV cure

HOW DOES THE ‘KICK AND KILL’ TECHNIQUE ELIMINATE HIV?

UCLA researchers used a strategy which they dubbed ‘kick and kill’ to eliminate HIV in 40 per cent of mice studied.

The technique was first proposed back in 2017 and works by tricking the dormant virus in the infected cells to reveal itself using a compound called ‘SUW133’, so that it can be targeted and eliminated.

The researchers then injected healthy natural killer cells along with the SUW133 that flushes HIV out of hiding, enabling them to completely clear HIV from 4 out of 10 infected mice.

With their initial study complete, the researchers are now working to refine their approach so that it succeeds in eliminating HIV in 100 per cent of mice cohorts in future experiments.

The study was undertaken by infectious disease specialist Jocelyn Kim of the UCLA and her colleagues.

‘These findings show proof-of-concept for a therapeutic strategy to potentially eliminate HIV from the body, a task that had been nearly insurmountable for many years,’ said Dr Kim.

‘The study opens a new paradigm for a possible HIV cure in the future.’

At present, people with HIV take so-called antiretroviral medications which, rather than killing the virus, act to inhibit it at various stages in its ‘life cycle’ — such as, for example, when it enters a host cell or when it churns out new copies of itself.

While this can suppress the virus to the extent that the host’s viral load becomes both undetectable and untransmissible, HIV will still remain dormant in their system, hiding out in CD4+ T cells, which normally help coordinate immune responses.

When people with HIV stop taking their antiretroviral treatment, the virus can escape from these boltholes and carry on replicating itself in the body — weakening the immune system and increasing the risk from potentially fatal cancers and infections.

The team’s strategy — which they have dubbed ‘kick and kill’, and was first proposed back in 2017 — works by tricking the dormant virus in the infected cells to reveal itself using a compound called ‘SUW133’, so that it can be targeted and eliminated.

In a previous study, which looked at HIV-infected mice whose immune systems had been altered to match those of humans, the experts found treatment with both SUW133 and antiretrovirals killed up to 25 per cent of infected cells within 24 hours.

Looking for a more effective way to eliminate the infected cells, the researchers turned instead to so-called natural killer cells, which are produced by the body’s immune system that, as their name suggests, can kill infected or tumour cells.

By injecting healthy natural killer cells along with the SUW133 that flushes HIV out of hiding, the team were able to completely clear HIV from 4 out of 10 infected mice.

The researchers were careful to analyse the mice’s spleens in particular, as this organ is known to harbour immune cells like the CD4+ T cells in which HIV can lie dormant.

With their initial study complete, the researchers are now working to refine their approach so that it succeeds in eliminating HIV in 100 per cent of mice cohorts in future experiments.

‘We will also be moving this research toward preclinical studies in nonhuman primates with the ultimate goal of testing the same approach in humans,’ Dr Kim said.

The full findings of the study were published in the journal Nature Communications.

WHY MODERN MEDS MEAN HIV IS NOT A DEATH SENTENCE

Prior to 1996, HIV was a death sentence. Then, ART (anti-retroviral therapy) was made, suppressing the virus, and meaning a person can live as long a life as anyone else, despite having HIV.

Drugs were also invented to lower an HIV-negative person’s risk of contracting the virus by 99%.

In recent years, research has shown that ART can suppress HIV to such an extent that it makes the virus untransmittable to sexual partners.

That has spurred a movement to downgrade the crime of infecting a person with HIV: it leaves the victim on life-long, costly medication, but it does not mean certain death.

Here is more about the new life-saving and preventative drugs:

1. Drugs for HIV-positive people

It suppresses their viral load so the virus is untransmittable

In 1996, anti-retroviral therapy (ART) was discovered.

The drug, a triple combination, turned HIV from a fatal diagnosis to a manageable chronic condition.

It suppresses the virus, preventing it from developing into AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), which makes the body unable to withstand infections.

After six months of religiously taking the daily pill, it suppresses the virus to such an extent that it’s undetectable.

And once a person’s viral load is undetectable, they cannot transmit HIV to anyone else, according to scores of studies including a decade-long study by the National Institutes of Health.

Public health bodies around the world now acknowledge that U=U (undetectable equals untransmittable).

2. Drugs for HIV-negative people

It is 99% effective at preventing HIV

PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) became available in 2012.

This pill works like ‘the pill’ – it is taken daily and is 99 percent effective at preventing HIV infection (more effective than the contraceptive pill is at preventing pregnancy).

It consists of two medicines (tenofovir dosproxil fumarate and emtricitabine). Those medicines can mount an immediate attack on any trace of HIV that enters the person’s bloodstream, before it is able to spread throughout the body.

The LAPD confirmed on Twitter that there had been an incident at the festival that concluded the event early. They said the California Highway Patrol would be assisting their investigation.

The Once Upon a Time in LA festival announced via its official Facebook account that the show had ended early, and urged guest to head to the exits.

The concert was held at Banc of California Stadium in Exposition Park in Los Angeles, where hip-hop artists such as Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, The Game, 50 Cent and YG had been scheduled to perform.

Caldwell, 28, was acquitted of a murder charge in 2019 from a 2016 incident in Carson, California that left a 24-year old man dead. He was also acquitted of five attempted murder charges and conspiracy to commit murder.

Madonna gets apology from 50 Cent over mocking Instagram photos

50 Cent is offering up an apology to Madonna.

The two stars recently got into a scuffle of sorts on social media when the rapper, 46, commented on one of the pop star’s Instagram posts.

In late November, Madonna shared a series of images of herself wearing risqué lingerie while posing on a bed. The final photo included in the post featured only the singer’s behind, legs and high-heeled feet poking out from under the bed.

According to TooFab, 50 Cent commented, comparing the picture to “The Wizard of Oz,” which famously features a shot of the legs of a witch wearing heels poking out from under a house that fell on top of her.
