Brown noise could help people with ADHD focus

Listening to brown noise could have cognitive benefits for people with ADHD, but experts caution the evidence is still limited

Imagine a deep, static rumble, like the low roar of a jet engine. The sound is called brown noise and has become popular among people with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder as a tool to help them focus or relax.

The hashtag #brownnoise has over 86 million views on TikTok. Top videos feature people with ADHD recording their reactions to brown noise, with many saying that their brains have never felt quieter.

Darcy Michael, 42, of Vancouver, B.C., who has ADHD, uses the noise when he needs to focus and calls it a “game changer.”

“I just feel like my brain is being hugged,” he said.

The evidence that brown noise might help people with attention deficit issues is anecdotal, and there’s no definitive research. A few studies have suggested that a similar sound, called white noise, may improve cognitive function and concentration in people with ADHD, and experts believe brown noise may produce the same effect.

Brown noise is considered a broadband sound, which means it is composed of a wide range of frequencies that the human ear can hear. Brown noise only uses lower frequencies, creating a lower-pitched bass that sounds more pleasant to some. It’s been compared to the sound of thunder, a jet plane or strong wind.

By contrast, white noise, which is also a broadband sound, includes all the frequencies that the human ear can hear — think of television static or a whirring fan. Some people find white noise soothing, while others find the higher-pitched tones in white noise to be irritating.

Another popular broadband sound is pink noise, which falls somewhere in between white and brown noise. It includes a mix of frequencies, but the lower frequencies are more prominent. Examples of pink noise in nature are the sound of rain falling or rustling leaves.

Why brown noise might help concentration

Some physicians believe that brown noise, white noise or pink noise is an auditory masking technique — meaning they can drown out other distracting noises.

Göran Söderlund, a researcher at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, believes the effect goes beyond simple auditory masking. Over the past decade, he has done 15 preliminary studies on the effects of white noise on people with and without ADHD. He hasn’t studied brown noise, but believes it would have similar effects.

His research shows that people with ADHD performed better on memory and language tasks when they listened to white noise. The studies were small, but he believes white and brown noise hold promise as tools to help people with ADHD.

The reason may be related to the persistent, overall level of a brain chemical called dopamine. Higher levels of dopamine may help regulate focus, but persistent dopamine release appears to be lower in people with ADHD. Söderlund theorizes that in people with ADHD, listening to broadband noise somehow causes the brain to mimic the effects of dopamine.

For some people with ADHD, neuron signals in the brain are like fireworks exploding in all directions, Söderlund said. The result can be a “noisy” head with chaotic thoughts competing for attention. White or brown noise appears to help the brain harness the neurons, focus attention and quiet noisy thoughts.

It’s unclear whether these types of sounds could also benefit people who don’t have ADHD. In a small study, Söderlund found that people who don’t have ADHD may still benefit from quieter levels of white noise. In another study, children with reading disabilities improved reading and memory scores by listening to white noise.

“This could be beneficial for more people than we think,” he said.

Söderlund said more research is needed to show whether brown, white or pink noise could help people with other learning disabilities.

“What happens when you’ve been using noise, say, for three months?” he said. “Does it actually build up new pathways in the brain that make neural communication easier? My hope would be that actually if you use noise, maybe you could lower medication.”

Dan Berlau, a professor at Regis University, believes that the evidence for white noise is strong enough to justify using it as a complementary tool. He cautioned that there has been little research on whether the effects are different for people on various medications and dosage levels.

“It’s noninvasive. It’s very easy. It’s accessible for people of a variety of socioeconomic statuses,” he said. “It’s something that I would encourage many people to try if they feel like they are struggling and could potentially see a benefit.

Denielle Plummer, 24, of Henryville, Pa., doesn’t have health insurance and said she can’t afford ADHD medication. When she needs to focus, she uses brown noise.

“I’m a lot more motivated because I know that I have something I can rely on,” she said. “There’s something I can always put on if I have a tough assignment, or if I have a really tough work task I have to complete.”

Taylor Griffin, 27, of Winnipeg, Canada, said brown noise helped her focus during a business course, and now she listens to it when she is doing chores, driving or cooking.

“If I listen to brown noise, I can focus for 30 minutes, do something else for 30 minutes and go back to focusing,” she said. “I can choose when I want to focus.”

What is the best way to find and use brown noise?

You can find playlists featuring brown, white, or pink noise on YouTube and Spotify. Retail and online stores sell sound machines that play some or all of these broadband sounds. You can also find sound machine phone apps.

Dave Anderson, a clinical psychologist at the Child Mind Institute, worries that social media can oversimplify the effectiveness of a sound interventions. He encourages people to work with professionals to develop holistic approaches to managing ADHD.

“For anybody who’s struggling, for anybody who’s just gotten the diagnosis, I really hope that people see these pointers online as a first step, but not the essence of treatment,” he said.

For people curious about trying brown, white or pink noise, Anderson recommends buying a sound machine instead of using a phone app because he thinks using the phone itself could lead to additional distractions.

Other experts recommend using over-the-ear headphones, which can block out distractions. But to prevent hearing damage, Anderson cautioned against playing these sounds at loud volumes.

Sabryna Herring-Antwine, a licensed professional therapist in Louisiana, takes a prescription ADHD drug and started listening to brown noise after learning about it on social media.

“I hope this is something that is not just a fading trend,” she said. “I hope that it is something that there will be tons of research on.”

Sister Wives ‘ Christine Brown Wouldn’t Wish Her Relationship with Kody ‘on Any Friend of Mine’

Sister Wives: Christine and Kody Brown Discuss Best Way to Tell Other Wives of Their Split

TLC (2)

Emotions are running high in the Brown family.

In this week’s episode of Sister Wives, Kody, Christine, Meri, Janelle and Robyn sat down together for a final time where they had a brutally honest conversation about their relationships with one another and the family.

“A year ago, when I looked at mine and Kody’s relationship, I really felt like I couldn’t stay, but I hadn’t yet decided to move,” Christine told the group. “I looked at our relationship, and how I was, I just got to thinking it’s not a relationship I would wish on any friend of mine.”

Kody, 53, who has been transparent about his anger over Christine’s decision to leave, fired back with his own view of the situation.

“This is what I remember. You were interested in the family, not in the man. That’s been your mantra,” Kody told Christine. “But it became about the man and not about the family. And that, I think, is my angry place. That’s the reason I’m struggling with this is because we have invested and invested and invested, and it wasn’t about the family, it was about the man. And this is my frustration and it’s also my accusation.”

He continued, “I’m angry that you weren’t willing to invest in the family, but you were only interested in what I could do for you — me as a resource for you. And it breaks my heart because now we’re at this point where it’s just over and it’s done.”

Kody Brown and Christine Brown

Last November, Christine announced on Instagram that her spiritual marriage to Kody was over. In September 2021, she relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah, and still lives there with daughter Truely, 12. (The exes are also parents to son Paedon, 24, and daughters Aspyn, 27, Mykelti, 26, Gwendlyn, 20, and Ysabel, 19. Kody has a total of 18 children between the women.)

“I thank you for ripping the band aid off so quickly, because it was never going to work if it all had to be about me as you had always indicated it wasn’t,” Kody said.

Robyn, who has expressed her sadness over Christine’s departure, fought back tears during the discussion.

“This is awkward. They are sort of hashing out their relationship in front of us, but if they’re talking, I believe that there is always a chance for a miracle,” she said during a confessional. “People get close to divorce and then change their mind all the time. She may say she divorced, but in my head technically she’s not, so I’m just kind of like, ‘Well, maybe they can talk this out.'”

At one point Kody lost his temper and yelled at Christine: “Man, just the knife in the kidneys over all these years! The sacrifices I’ve made to love you. Wasted!”

Later, he explained his outburst in a confessional interview.

“I feel like for the last 14 years I’ve been sucking it up with her,” he said. “Just trying to be a loving husband and now that she’s leaving I just felt like giving her a piece of my mind with that leaving. This ain’t my fault. You did this is what I feel like. I don’t care if that’s not fair. That’s how I feel. She did this.”

While Christine admitted her choice was difficult, she knew it was the right decision.

“I think this is one of the saddest conversations I have ever been in,” she said. “I don’t regret leaving at all, though.”

Millie Bobbie Brown Wants to Play Britney Spears in a Movie

Who is it? It’s Millie Bobbie Brown, bitch. The Enola Holmes 2 star shared with Drew Barrymore that one of her biggest career goals is to portray Britney Spears in a biopic about her life. She connects with the star through their shared experience of being in the spotlight at such a young age. “I think her story, first of all, resonates with me growing up in the public eye. Watching her videos, watching interviews of her when she was younger. Same thing with you; I see the scramble for words [in the interviews],” explained Brown to Barrymore. “I don’t know her but when I look at pictures of her, I feel like I could tell her story in the right way and hers only.” Brown makes a strong case for why she, a Brit, would play the perfect Brit(ney), especially since she’s already shown off her singing voice and sang Spears’ “Gimme More” in a game with her BFF Noah Schnapp. Schnapp could probably play K-Fed or Bryan Spears once Brown produces the film in ten years. You may say Brown is a dreamer, but she’s not the only one; plenty of others have noticed the similarities between her and Spears.

However, people eventually wake up from their dreams. The next morning, Britney herself seemingly responded to Brown’s pitch and wasn’t happy about the idea of a biopic. “I hear about people wanting to do movies about my life … dude I’m not dead !!!” Britney posted on Instagram the day after the interview was posted. While her post was mostly about her parents’ treatment of her throughout her life, it seems that Britney isn’t on board with a biopic.

‘Sister Wives’ Robyn Brown Says Christine Faked Kody Relationship

  • Robyn accused Christine of “faking” a good relationship with Kody on “Sister Wives.”
  • She also said Christine and Kody “don’t communicate well at all.”
  • Janelle told cameras she felt like the conversation was meant to “invalidate” Christine.

On Sunday’s episode of TLC’s “Sister Wives,” star Christine Brown told her former sister wives Robyn, Janelle, and Meri that she had a buyer for her house and was moving to Utah in a week’s time.

The news led to an intense conversation about the status of Kody’s marriages, during which Robyn Brown accused Christine of “faking” a good marriage in front of her when the family lived in Las Vegas.

After Christine said that some of the kids in the family saw that her marriage to Kody had been struggling since they lived in Las Vegas, Robyn got defensive. “In Vegas? OK, that’s a lie,” she said.

“‘Cause I remember the conversations, I remember what was going on,” Robyn added. “I remember Janelle and Kody making their relationship better than it ever had been. I remember him talking with you. I remember you guys having fun dates and hearing about that and seeing you guys’ relationship.”

“So either you guys were faking it in front of me… I don’t know,” she concluded.

In a solo interview about the exchange, Kody’s second wife Janelle Brown told cameras it was odd to watch Robyn accuse Christine of lying because she’d known the pair were having problems for a long time. She said she felt like Robyn and Kody (who was present for the conversation, which took place in Christine’s backyard) were trying to “invalidate Christine, just tell her that she’s being crazy” and leaving the family “on a whim.”

Robyn misunderstood the fact that Christine was talking about her own marriage to Kody and not claiming that all of Kody’s marriages were unhealthy in Las Vegas. Though they eventually cleared up the miscommunication, it was a rare moment of tense dialogue between the women in the Brown family, who don’t usually talk about their individual relationships with Kody to each other.

Christine and Janelle claimed Kody has favored Robyn and her kids for many years now, as chronicled on past seasons of “Sister Wives.”

On a season 16 episode, Christine told cameras that some of her daughters saw Kody had “apparent” favorite children and this made it hard for them to “respect” him.

During the conversation on Sunday’s episode, when Christine started to tell Robyn that she and Kody had important conversations about how their relationship wasn’t working, Robyn remained defensive.

“You guys don’t talk though, you guys don’t communicate,” she said. “You guys don’t communicate very well at all. So I don’t really see how that could be even legitimate.”

Christine then claimed that she and Kody had communicated “better” in the last six months, which he disagreed with.

Christine and Kody split up in 2021 after over 25 years of “spiritual” marriage. This season has been chronicling the complicated nature of the split, exposing how many people are affected when a wife chooses to leave a plural family.

“Sister Wives” airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on TLC.

Christine Brown and her former Sister Wives aren’t exactly crystal-clear about what really constitutes divorce in a spiritual marriage.

On Sunday’s episode of the TLC series, Kody Brown’s fourth wife, Robyn, opened up about her feelings on Christine’s divorce from Kody after 26 years of marriage.

“Usually our church would [be the one to] say you’re divorced,” Robyn told Christine, Kody and his other wives Janelle and Meri. “You have to go ask for a divorce. You have to get paperwork, you have to get approval. You have to prove that the marriage is broken.”

But, she told Christine: “This is a little different, I guess, because you don’t consider yourself to be part of that church anymore.”

“Christine just saying she’s divorced is sort of invalidating our beliefs,” Robyn said in a confessional. “We are spiritually married to Kody by our church. If we want a divorce then we have to go get their approval. Usually they require counseling, lots and lots of meetings and technically, from my understanding, until Christine is physical with another man she’s not divorced. But I don’t know.”

For Christine, who is no longer a member of the Mormon Fundamentalist faith and was never legally married to Kody, her divorce came to effect when she decided the marriage was over.

“Since I don’t have any legal contract that binds me with Kody, there was no legal process that we’ve had to go through,” she explained.

During the episode, Christine also revealed to the family that she sold her home in Flagstaff, Arizona, and was moving to Utah in a week.

“This conversation is not going to be easy,” she said. “It’s not only that my house is under contract, it’s that I’m leaving. This is a pulling-the-rug-out-from-underneath-them kind of a thing.”

Despite the difficulty of ending her plural marriage and starting over, Christine knew the decision was the right one.

“I was 21 when I got married. I’m 49. I’m starting over again,” she said in a confessional. “All I know is that I’m moving forward and I’m moving to something better. I do know I’m moving towards something better. And that’s enough most of the time.”

She continued, “I know without a doubt I have tried for years to make this work. I have a clear conscience knowing that I gave it my best. If people want to look at me and think otherwise, OK — I can’t do anything about that. Being a mom is my most important thing, but I couldn’t with a clear conscience stay married to someone who had favorites and made it very known and someone who is breaking my kids’ hearts. I need to stand with my them instead, and I wanted to do it for them.”

Why Millie Bobby Brown Says She Is Scared to Start Filming ‘Stranger Things’ After Wrapping ‘Enola Holmes’ Sequel

The actress is feeling a bit shaken up.

Milly Bobby Brown has four wildly successful seasons of Netflix’s Stranger Things under her belt, but she’s still feeling nervous to come back and film the fifth and final installment.

Brown, 18, revealed her concerns during a Q&A at the New York City premiere of the streamer’s Enola Holmes 2 earlier this week, admitting to a “deep-rooted fear” that she’d accidentally bring one of Enola’s quirks to set as Eleven, per Today.

When playing Sherlock Holmes’ younger sister, Brown often breaks the fourth wall, addressing the audience directly through the camera. She compared the feeling to vlogging on YouTube, and she became so comfortable with it that she’s now scared she won’t be able to avoid looking into the camera.

“While filming [Enola Holmes 2], I had a dream that I was on the set of Stranger Things, and I couldn’t stop looking at the camera,” the actress shared at the event. “And now, I have this deep-rooted fear that now I will never stop looking at the camera.”

It’s a fear that she says she can’t stop obsessing over, but we’re pretty sure she’ll have Season 5 in the bag. And if not, a little inner-outer monologuing from Eleven wouldn’t be the worst addition in the world!

TreVeyon Henderson, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Cameron Brown Among 12 Buckeyes Unavailable Against Northwestern

The Ohio State running back room won’t be at full strength on Saturday.

OSU STATUS REPORT FOR NORTHWESTERN
UNAVAILABLE
WR JAXON SMITH-NJIGBA
RB TREVEYON HENDERSON
CB CAMERON BROWN
S KOURT WILLIAMS
RB TC CAFFEY
RB EVAN PRYOR
DE MITCHELL MELTON
WR KAMRYN BABB
CB LLOYD MCFARQUHAR
LS BRADLEY ROBINSON
LB JALEN PACE
RB CAYDEN SAUNDERS

Buckeye rushing leader TreVeyon Henderson is one of 12 players listed as unavailable on Ohio State’s official status report ahead of the noon kickoff against Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois. Henderson, who has 552 yards and six scores on 96 attempts in 2022, will miss his second full game of the year. That leaves Ohio State with just three healthy scholarship running backs for Saturday’s matchup.

Henderson suffered a foot injury that sidelined him after just four carries in the Buckeyes’ Week 3 meeting with Toledo, and despite returning to action the following week, Henderson sat out in Week 5. Back on the field in Week 6, Henderson’s day ended early against Michigan State following a hard hit at the start of the third quarter.

Starting both games after the bye week, Henderson rushed for 116 yards and two scores on 27 carries against Iowa and Penn State. Both of those touchdowns came in the fourth quarter of last week’s Ohio State win over the Nittany Lions, a contest in which Miyan Williams left with injury after just two carries.

But Williams, who leads Ohio State with 10 rushing touchdowns and an average of 6.9 yards per carry, is available to play against Northwestern’s 109th-ranked rush defense in Illinois.

Ryan Day said this week he expects to see true freshman Dallan Hayden and Arizona State transfer Chip Trayanum, who switched over from linebacker to running back following a season-ending injury to walk-on TC Caffey, receive snaps in the backfield against Northwestern. Fellow walk-on running back Cayden Saunders is also out for Saturday’s game.

Running back isn’t the only position group impacted by injury this week. Jaxon Smith-Njigba will miss his sixth game of the season as he deals with an ongoing hamstring injury suffered in Week 1. This is Smith-Njigba’s second straight absence since returning to play for part of the first half against Iowa after the bye week.

Starting cornerback Cameron Brown will also be out of the Northwestern matchup, which will be the fifth game he’s missed in 2022. Second-year defensive back JK Johnson has started each of the past two games in place of Brown at cornerback, though Jordan Hancock also saw regular snaps in the rotation opposite Denzel Burke against Penn State.

Long snapper Bradley Robinson remains unavailable after suffering a knee injury against Iowa that is expected to sideline him for the rest of the season, and Buckeye captains Kourt Williams and Kamryn Babb are among the other Buckeyes who will be sidelined on Saturday.

Millie Bobby Brown Said She Can’t Ask About Henry Cavill’s Life

  • Millie Bobby Brown said that Henry Cavill doesn’t let her ask about his personal life.
  • The pair play brother and sister duo Sherlock and Enola Holmes in “Enola Holmes.”
  • Brown said their relationship is different from the one she has with her “Stranger Things” costars.

Millie Bobby Brown said that her relationship with her “Enola Holmes 2” costar Henry Cavill is different from her “Stranger Things” castmates because she and Cavill have a “real adult relationship.”

Speaking to Deadline about the upcoming film, which will be released on Netflix on Friday, Brown said that she and Cavill have boundaries in their relationship as costars. In the “Enola Holmes” films, they play brother and sister Sherlock and Enola Holmes.

“With Henry, it feels like a real adult relationship. Like a really good friendship a really healthy one. One that we have terms and conditions,” Brown said. “I know Henry. He has terms and conditions with me. I’m not allowed to ask about his personal life. It’s like, ‘Millie, shut up. No.’ And I’m like ‘Understood.'”

In contrast, Brown said that her relationship with her costars on the Netflix series “Stranger Things” is more familial in nature, given that they grew up together. When the first season of the show premiered in 2016, Brown herself was 12 years old, with her young costars also in their preteens and early teens.

Brown and her costar Noah Schnapp, who plays Will Byers on “Stranger Things,” previously said in an MTV News video published in June that they had a marriage pact that would go into effect if they were both still single when they turned 40 years old.

“With the ‘Stranger Things’ kids, it’s different,” Brown told Deadline. “There’s no boundaries because it’s like we’re all siblings. But with Henry, he’s very strict with me, which I appreciate.”

Sister Wives Robyn Brown Is ‘at a Loss,’ Calls Christine Leaving Kody ‘This Big Bomb Going Off in My Family’

Kody and Robyn Brown

TLC

Sister Wives‘ Robyn Brown is struggling with the state of her relationship to husband of 12 years Kody Brown.

During this week’s episode of the TLC series, Robyn opened up about her frustrations with Kody as he struggled to accept the end of his 26-year marriage to third wife Christine.

“There this heavy weight between us because we know that our family is just getting messed with like crazy,” Robyn, 44, said in a confessional. “It’s so crazy to just sit there and watch this big bomb going off in my family.”

Since Christine announced on Instagram that her spiritual marriage to Kody was over last November, Kody, 53, has resisted accepting the end of their polygamous relationship.

For Robyn, the shocking split and aftermath has taken a serious toll on everyone, including herself.

“Kody is now questioning me left and right about things that I thought he knew about me like he’s struggling to trust everybody around him.” Robyn told cameras.

“Yes, you are going through a divorce with Christine, but you still have marriages that you have to maintain. He’s still has us, and he still has marriages with us and he still has to fix them and figure them out and get over his anger enough to actually interact appropriately or he’s going to ruin every single one of them,” she said. “I’ve never struggled with Kody in my marriage as bad as I am right now. I’m at a loss.”

But Kody needed to move forward at his own pace.

“I’m going through a divorce,” Kody said in a confessional. “Just give me a little time to be sad and angry and process. I’ll get over it, I think.”

Before Christine decided to leave the family, Kody had built a life — and fathered 18 children — with her and his other wives Robyn, Meri and Janelle.

“There’s so much investment here in this family,” acknowledged Robyn. “You don’t just let that go.”

Speaking to Radio Times, she said: ‘For the last five years I’ve been playing an American character in Stranger Things and I found it really challenging being British in this, even though I am a Brit.

‘I had to learn how to speak again because I’m so used to speaking in an American accent.’

Ironically, Millie initially struggled to perfect an American accent, admitting she learnt by mimicking Miley Cyrus in Hannah Montana.

She told Jimmy Fallon in 2020: ‘I watched Bugsy Malone and Godfather when I was like eight and my parents were like, you know, watching all these movies with me and I was like ‘Yeah but Hannah Montana is like Oscar-nominating, like it’s so good.’

The 23-year-old son of Victoria and David Beckham spoke to People in August about what he loves to cook for wife Nicola Peltz, 27 – but baffled fans as he switched between American and Cockney accents while chatting.

The star, who was raised between London, Madrid and Los Angeles, said: ‘My favourite thing to cook a lot, she loves angel hair pasta with pink sauce.

He described himself as a ‘social chameleon’ and called his accent is ‘ever-changing’ depending on who he is around, before insisting he is normally ‘good at accents’.

Addressing his interview in an Instagram Live video, Liam joked: ‘I’m good at accents, I pride myself on them! I just wish sometimes I could do my own.

‘No I mean, what can I say about that really? It was quite funny.’

The former One Direction star admitted that he had told the presenter not to ask him any difficult questions because he ‘had a lot to drink’, as his friends could be heard laughing in the background.

Liam went on to say he has listened back to his interview and said he ‘stands by’ his comments – which were slammed as ‘rambling – adding: ‘I’m just sorry it came out in so many accents! I’m not even sure if it’s an accent I can do.’

He then said people only need to watch back his X Factor audition for proof of his ‘ever-changing’, where he claims you couldn’t even tell he was from Birmingham.

‘I didn’t know the Birmingham accent was going to become really cool because of Peaky Blinders, but I don’t sound like I’m from Birmingham really [in the audition],’ he said.   ‘But when my mum’s here, you bl**dy bet I do!’

Lots to talk about: Brooklyn and Liam posed up for a snap back in 2018

Liam called himself a ‘social chameleon’ because his accent changes depending on who he is with, saying his bizarre twang emerged because he was staying with people who had different accents.

He added: ‘That day – I’ll tell you the truth – I was staying in a house with two German people, three people from Texas, one person from Liverpool and me.

‘It sounded like one of those jokes people say where an Irishman and an Englishman walk into a pub!

The rise of TikTok voice: How Gen Z has adopted the ‘affected, theatrical drawl’ of the Mid-Atlantic accent because it suggests ‘power and status’

If you’ve started to notice that everyone on TikTok seems to sound the same, then you’re not wrong, after Gen Z brought back the Mid Atlantic accent popularised by old Hollywood before it started to dwindle in the 1960s.

Linguists and voice coaches have explained how the ‘TikTalk’ or ‘TikTok voice’ is really the mid-Atlantic accent which ‘denoted class, status and education during the era of ‘talkies’ (sound films) in the 1920s’.

Thanks to stars like Katharine Hepburn, the half-English and half-American drawl ‘became known as the ‘movie accent’ due to its prominence in Hollywood films, and has seen a resurgence in recent years among stars such as Harry Styles, Millie Bobby Brown and Gillian Anderson.

And it has now picked up steam on the social media app, with TikTok user @It’sMeJadeB recently posting a video which has since gained over 1.7 million views in which she commentsed ‘Who decided this is how we were going to talk on TikTok?’

Other users were quick to agree with her observation, with one declaring that they looked back on all their old videos only to discover they’d been imitating the accent all along.

Speaking to FEMAIL, linguists and voice coaches revealed how TikTok voice, aka TikTalk’ has become a specific register commonly used to narrate storytelling videos.

Speaking about the ‘TikTok voice’, expert linguists from the app Babbel commented: ‘The ‘TikTok voice’ is really the mid-Atlantic accent (also known as the trans-Altantic, American Theater Standard or American stage speech accent) was very popular in the northeastern United States, and was named for the middle of the Atlantic ocean, rather than the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S.’

‘The accent is so named because it’s supposed to sound like a cross between two accents from opposite sides of the Atlantic: British Received Pronunciation (BRP) and Standard American.’

‘Historically, the mid-Atlantic accent denoted class, status and education during the era of ‘talkies’ (sound films) in the 1920s, and became known as the ‘movie accent’ due to its prominence in Hollywood films.

‘Back then, this accent was a consciously taught, and learned, blend of BRP and the Standard American accent, and it became popular on the radio, in cinemas and theater: everyone from newsreel narrators to Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn are famous to this day for using this accent.

‘While it hasn’t been taught for decades (the ‘movie accent’ quickly fell out of style following the end of WWII), many people have picked up the accent in recent years – especially when producing content on social media and in particular Tik Tok.

‘Accents and dialects provide cultural shorthands to tap directly into popular stereotypes, and falling into a specific accent can help convey a common character type.

‘Because of its prominent role in American history and media, the mid-Atlantic accent can still be used to communicate wealth and education.’

Meanwhile they continued: ‘Whilst it can’t be said exactly why Gen Z are so eager to bring back the accent, we can theorize that they may be trying to tap into the status and power that come hand-in-hand with sounding mid-Atlantic.

‘Outside of this, it may just be that influencers are looking to stand out with a distinctive sound in an increasingly saturated market – or that they just find the accent fun to use!’

The accent was popularised by some of TikTok most popular users including @glamdemon2004, Audrey Peters and Sara Nahusenay.

And it’s not just American accounts adopting the accent, with London based @MaybeTasniu also adopting the twang.
