USFL Week 4 scores: Breakers look to keep pace with Stallions as Gamblers vie for playoff spot in South

The New Orleans Breakers will have to keep pace with the Birmingham Stallions if they wish to win the USFL’s South Division, making Sunday’s matchup with the Houston Gamblers even more crucial. A win for the Breakers will keep New Orleans a game behind the Stallions — the league’s lone unbeaten team.

Houston, led by running back Mark Thompson, is looking to avenge a fourth quarter collapse against the Tampa Bay Bandits last week. Thompson entered Week 4 leading the USFL in rushing yards while Breakers’ wide receiver Johnnie Dixon led the league in receiving yards. This matchup features two of the best skill position players in the USFL.

A win by Houston puts the Gamblers in a three-way tie with New Orleans and Tampa Bay for the second and final playoff spot in the South division — so this game is big for them as well. This is the final game of the weekend in Week 4 of the USFL.

In Saturday’s games

Generals 21, Maulers 13: The New Jersey Generals (3-1) established themselves as the favorites in the North division, using an impressive quarterback performance from quarterbacks Luis Perez and D’Andre Johnson to beat the Pittsburgh Maulers. Perez went 11 of 14 for 102 yards while Johnson finished 9 of 10 for 98 yards and a touchdown in the victory.

Johnson, the league’s best running quarterback, was held to just 14 yards rushing. Darius Victor picked up the slack with 57 yards and a rushing touchdown while KaVontae Turpin also had 37 rushing yards and a score. New Jersey leads Philadelphia by one game in the North.

Stallions 16, Bandits 10: Birmingham remains the lone unbeaten team in the USFL, thanks to a dominant defensive performance in a victory over Tampa Bay. In a matchup between two of the league’s top teams, the Stallions defense held the Bandits to just 158 yards of offense — 36 in the second half.

Trailing 10-7 at halftime, two field goals by Brandon Aubrey in the third quarter were the only points the Stallions needed thanks to their dominant defense. The Stallions started slow in the game, but Alex McGough led Birmingham on a 17-play, 77-yard drive that took 9:04 off the clock to get them going in the second quarter. Birmingham took its first lead of the game thanks to McGough’s 1-yard touchdown run to put them up 7-3 with 1:21 left in the first half.

Tampa Bay’s lone touchdown was a Jordan Ta’amu pass to Rashard Davis for a 9-yard touchdown in the final minute of the first half that gave the Bandits a 10-7 lead. The five-play, 67-yard drive was the last gasp of offense for the Bandits.

USFL Week 2 scores, highlights: New Orleans Breakers dominate Tampa Bay Bandits to close out Week 2

The New Orleans Breakers established themselves as the early-season best team in the USFL on Sunday, as they defeated the Tampa Bay Bandits, 34-3. Quarterback Kyle Sloter completed 25 of 39 passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns, and virtually all of his offensive weapons had big days. Jordan Ellis rushed 21 times for 64 yards, and Jonathan Adams caught five passes for 92 yards.

The Breakers jumped out to an early lead and didn’t look back. The offense scored touchdowns on both of their first two possessions, and the defense forced three consecutive three-and-outs from the Bandits on their first three possessions. No. 2 overall pick Jordan Ta’amu was seen as one of the best quarterbacks in this spring league, but he struggled Sunday, completing just 8 of 18 passes for 62 yards and one interception. Brady White also got some run, and he completed 3 of 10 passes for 35 yards and one pick.

The Bandits are a much better team than what they showed in this shocking loss, but the real story is that this Breakers team looks loaded. Be sure to check out the USFL standings and season schedule as well. We’ve got all the latest news on our USFL page here.

USFL scores, updates: Live results, analysis as Stars and Breakers face off in Game 2 of Sunday tripleheader

The USFL has taken over the schedule on Easter Sunday as the Philadelphia Stars and New Orleans Breakers have kicked off the second game of the three-game tripleheader on opening weekend in Birmingham, Alabama. The Stars are quarterbacked by Brian Scott and the Breakers by Kyle Sloter.

This matchup isn’t for division bragging rights, even though both teams wanted to start the season off on a high note. New Orleans’ Davin Bellamy figures to be a difference-maker in this game, as he was the first edge rusher selected in the USFL Draft back in February. The Stars are expected to be one of the faster teams in the league, so there’s the potential for Philadelphia to put points on the board.

With the NFL readying for the 2022 draft in Las Vegas and football fans thirsty for a viable spring league, the USFL is hoping it can become a mainstay in the lives of those who crave the gridiron and don’t want an offseason from it. If that’s you, and it likely is, strap on your seatbelt — we’ve already seen a thriller in the Birmingham Stallions’ win in the season opener on Saturday night, and Sunday’s first game was also a thriller, as the Houston Gamblers narrowly held off a furious comeback by the Michigan Panthers, whose would-be TD on the final play was juggled incomplete in the end zone.

Here’s a look at the scores so far as the Stars and Breakers are underway:

SATURDAY
Birmingham Stallions 28, New Jersey Generals 24
SUNDAY
Houston Gamblers 17, Michigan Panthers 12 (final)
New Orleans Breakers 9, Philadelphia Stars 0 (second quarter)

US Coronavirus: The CDC is tracking a recent uptick in Covid-19 cases. Its chief says spring breakers and eased restrictions concern her

“What concerns me is the footage of what’s happening in spring breakers, in people who are not continuing to implement prevention strategies while we get fully scaled up,” Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said during a White House Covid-19 briefing.

“We need to hang in there for just a little while longer because we can see a time in the next couple of months where we will have a lot more people vaccinated and we will really be able to blunt infection rates,” she added.

“If we choose to invest in prevention right now, we will ultimately come out of this pandemic faster and with fewer lives lost,” the CDC director said.

So while the US is getting closer to turning the corner, it’s not there yet. The country continues to add tens of thousands of new cases and hundreds of virus-related deaths every single day.

“When you are at that level, I don’t think you can declare victory and say you’ve turned the corner,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, said during the briefing. “You’ve got to continue to do what we’re doing: more vaccinations and continue to do public health measures until we actually do turn the corner.”

You asked, we answered: Your top questions about Covid-19 and vaccines

‘A jolt of hope for all of us’

The good news: Vaccinations are already making a difference.

More than a quarter of Americans have gotten at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, according to CDC data. About 14% of the US population is fully vaccinated.

The pace of vaccinations has doubled in less than two months, the CDC data shows, and now more than 70% of people 65 and older have received at least one shot.

That 65 and older population has also seen a larger decline in Covid-19 case rates, death rates and hospitalizations than any other age group and now account for a smaller share of total hospitalizations than they did a few months ago, according to an analysis of CDC data.

Track Covid-19 vaccinations in the US

In nursing homes, which were prioritized for vaccinations nationwide since the start of the rollouts, Covid-19 cases and deaths among residents are the lowest they’ve been since tracking began back in May, according to data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

Several recent studies also showed vaccines protected healthcare workers, Walensky and Fauci said during the Wednesday briefing.

“These findings should be a jolt of hope for all of us and to serve as a catalyst for everyone to roll up their sleeves when the vaccine is available,” Walensky said.

In total, vaccines have likely already saved at least 40,000 American lives so far, former CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden told CNN on Wednesday night.

“They’re remarkably effective, they’re remarkably safe,” Frieden said.

What could stand in the way of more vaccinations

As more states try to get more shots into arms faster, officials have unveiled timelines for expanded eligibility — and in many cases have set a date for when the vaccines will be open to anyone 16 and older.

Pfizer’s vaccine is the only one available for use by people who are 16 and older while the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are both authorized for people 18 and older.

Vaccine eligibility across the country

As eligibility opens up, some local officials worry that soon the challenge will be short demand, rather than short supply.

That could happen within the next four to six weeks, says Lori Tremmel Freeman, CEO of the National Association of County and City Health Officials.

“We will get to the point pretty quickly where we’re saying, ‘OK, now we’re into the really hard phase of this where we’re down to the population that is not so willing to get the vaccine,'” Freeman said.

It’s that last mile of “people that are hesitant” that will be challenging, she added. And other experts and officials have also expressed concern about that last stretch.

“The hesitancy is worrisome not just here, but all across the country, and I expect as a country we’ll get to 50% vaccination rate of the population. But we’re going to have a harder time getting from 50% to 70%,” Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson told CNN earlier this week.

“It’s about overcoming the skepticism, it is about education,” he said.

CNN’s Deidre McPhillips, Jacqueline Howard, Deanna Hackney contributed to this report.

Spring breakers arrested for allegedly drugging, raping woman who later died

Two North Carolina men in Miami over spring break were arrested for allegedly drugging and raping a 24-year-old woman who was found dead in her hotel room, authorities said Monday.

Evoire Collier, 21, and Dorian Taylor, 24, are also accused of stealing the unconscious woman’s credit cards and using them during their South Beach vacation, The Miami Herald reported.

Both men were caught on surveillance footage entering the Albion Hotel with the impaired victim, a Pennsylvania resident, at around 1 a.m. on Thursday, police said.

“[Taylor] was holding her from behind, holding her by the neck so she could stand,” Miami Beach Detective Luis Alsina testified during a bond hearing Monday, according to the Herald.

Police said each of the men had sex with the victim at the hotel and, at one point, Taylor allegedly forced himself on her as she appeared to be unconscious.

“The fact that the victim was under the influence of alcohol and narcotics, she could not have consented to sex with the defendants,” the police report states.

While their victim was passed out, the men snatched her credit cards, phone and cash and left her in the room “without any concern for her welfare or safety,” the report alleges.

First responders discovered the woman “semi nude” and dead in the room’s bed later Thursday.

Cops were able to track down Collier — who fit the description of one of the men in the surveillance footage — on Saturday in an area that’s recently been packed with partying spring breakers.

He allegedly confessed that he and his pal had met the woman at a local restaurant and that Taylor gave her a “green pill,” the police report said.

Collier told police he believed the drug was Percocet, a powerful pain reliever, Alsina testified in court.

He allegedly said “that he went along with [Taylor] as they planned to have sex with the victim,” the report said.

Both men, who are from Greensboro, were booked into a Miami-Dade jail on Sunday.

Charges against them include burglary with battery, sexual battery, petty theft and the fraudulent use of a credit card.

Investigators are still trying to determine the victim’s cause of death and whether it was due to an overdose from the pill supplied by the men. If that’s the case, the two could also potentially face manslaughter or murder charges, the Herald reported.

Their arrests come as local authorities grapple with crowds of unruly spring breakers who have flocked to the party city, recently even instituting an 8 p.m. curfew to crack down on the rowdy reveling.

Miami Beach police have made over 1,000 arrests since February and at least five officers have been hurt on the job, the Herald reported.

In court Monday, prosecutor Ayana Harris argued Collier and Taylor should be held in jail pending trial, noting they could face more serious charges and are possible flight risks as “both are from out of state.”

Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy Glazer agreed and expressed alarm about the allegations.

“He couldn’t even pick up the phone to call police or 911 after they did whatever it is they did to her,” Glazer said.

Both Collier and Taylor have been appointed public defenders and are set to be arraigned in about three weeks.

Miami Beach extends curfew to deal with unruly spring breakers

“It feels in some ways like our city is a tinder right now,” Gelber said on CNN’s “New Day.” “It’s not just about not wearing masks and physical distancing. It’s also some of the folks coming are coming with bad intentions, so there’s been brawls and even gunplay.

“When you have these levels of crowds, you can’t really manage unless you have enormous policing, and all of that mix creates a lot of peril and a lot of concern.”

On Saturday night, police fired pepper balls in an attempt to break up throngs of mostly maskless partiers on the city’s main thoroughfares.

The Miami Beach City Commission met Sunday night and declared an 8 p.m. curfew would remain for the city’s entertainment district Thursdays through Sundays until at least March 30.

Bridges and causeways will be closed those days from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Local residents, hotel guests and employees are exempted from those rules.

City Manager Raul Aguila will have the option to extend it for two more weeklong increments through April 13.

“The goal here is to really contain the overwhelming crowd of visitors, and the potential for violence disruption and damage to property, whether intentional or not,” Aguila said.

Gelber said he hoped an extension would not be necessary, but “it’s necessary now because it’s unacceptable what we’re seeing and we can’t allow our police, our residents, and, frankly, our visitors also to be in any kind of danger.”

The crowds became so large that police from nearby agencies came in to lend assistance. Gelber said somebody fired a shot into the air Friday night.

The previous weekend, about 100 people were arrested and two officers were injured following unruly crowds, police said.

When asked who he blamed for the influx of spring breakers, Gelber said Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ opening up of the state economy didn’t help.

The state has thrown open its doors to tourists after a year of coronavirus lockdowns and restrictions around the country.

“Right now, we’re being asked to take all people who are coming,” Gelber said on “New Day.” “The governor has said everything is open, come on down.

“The problem is we’re still in the midst of a pandemic. It’s certainly not in our rearview mirror yet by any means and it certainly is not in my county, in my city. So that’s a challenge. … We have sort of a triple threat of too many crowds, too many people acting out and a pandemic. And those three together create a very challenging moment.”

CNN’s Melissa Alonso, Theresa Waldrop and Hollie Silverman contributed to this report.

150 spring breakers arrested amid party chaos in Miami Beach

About 150 people were arrested in Miami Beach over the weekend as throngs of unruly spring breakers descended on the city.

Friday marked the wildest day in the party hotspot as about 120 people were arrested and two police officers were injured during clashes with the revelers, Local 10 News reported.

“It is really a difficult situation,” Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber said of the weekend debauchery.

“A lot of people are coming here and they are coming here with the wrong intentions,” he said, according to another report from the outlet.

The city is under a midnight curfew amid the pandemic.

The officers who were injured had been attempting to make an arrest when they were attacked, authorities said.

“The crowd ended up turning on those officers who were there,” Miami Beach police spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez said, according to the report.

The gatherings on Friday led police in some areas to deploy pepper balls to disperse the crowds.

On Saturday, 30 more people were arrested.

Gelber, the mayor, warned would-be spring breakers that more arrests will be made if they continue to disobey laws.

“If you are coming here because you think anything goes, you’re going to have a terrible time. We are going to arrest you,” he said.
