Erling Haaland: ‘It’s a decision for Erling,’ Borussia Dortmund CEO says of striker’s impending departure transfer

Multiple UK media outlets have reported that Manchester City will likely announce in the coming week that it has agreed a deal with Borussia Dortmund for the striker’s services.
Haaland’s brute force, blistering pace and devastating finishing ability have made him one of the most sought-after players in the world, meaning Dortmund has been resigned to losing its star player ever since signing him in 2020.

While many clubs would understandably be frustrated at constantly losing out to those higher in the pecking order, the inevitably of the transfers make them much easier to manage, Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke says.

“That’s the only way for us because when a player performs very well, we have to fight against the big, big, big clubs with the oligarchs and the Arabian states at their back,” Watzke tells CNN Senior Sport Analyst Darren Lewis.

“And this fight we cannot win, but we can win a fight over an 18-year-old player, like Jude Bellingham, because this player loves to play at Borussia Dortmund because we have always 80,000 spectators, it’s a very good atmosphere and the club knows how to manage young players.

“That’s our way and, okay, we have a good department who are scouting young players every day, but it’s also very important if you have the player here, you must develop him and I think that works … most of the time, it works.”

Watzke is under no illusions about where Dortmund stands in the hierarchy of modern football.

The club has nurtured — and then sold — many of Europe’s biggest and most expensive stars of recent years; Robert Lewandowski, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Jadon Sancho, Mario Götze, Mats Hummels, Ousmane Dembélé and Christian Pulisic are among the players to have worn the famous black and yellow shirts.

While Watzke understands that a high player turnover is part of the business, there is still a human being behind a transfer fee, and on certain occasions, waving goodbye is harder than others.

“Sometimes, it’s a little bit more emotional,” Watzke admits. “It was very emotional for me when Mats Hummels told me in 2016 that he will leave the club after I think seven or eight years because it was a long period and we had a very special relationship.

“But sometimes, players are at Borussia Dortmund for one, two, three years, and in this period, it’s not so deep with the emotions and it’s normal in football that players come, players go and if they want to go, OK.

“Sometimes, it’s a good deal; sometimes, it’s not so good. When we sold Ousmane Dembélé to Barcelona after a short period, it was a very good deal. When Robert Lewandowski left us without transfer fee, it was not a good deal, but that’s football.”

It would seem now that Haaland is next up to leave the club.

The 21-year-old has scored a remarkable 85 goals in 88 games since joining from RB Salzburg in 2020, breaking numerous Bundesliga and Champions League records along the way.

Manchester City looks set to meet Haaland’s reported release clause of €75 million ($79 million) — a veritable bargain given his talents and the current transfer fee climate — and beat a number of Europe’s biggest clubs to his signature, including Real Madrid, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain.

On the day of CNN’s interview with Watzke (April 26), the Dortmund CEO admitted he didn’t know whether Haaland would leave during the European summer transfer window. What he did know for sure, however, was if Haaland did leave, Dortmund will continue competing as it always has done.

“It’s a decision for Erling,” Watzke said. “Erling, you know, has an exit clause and he must decide if we wants to take this exit clause or not and he has time to give us his decision. When the time is ready, he will do it.

“But we [Dortmund] have played football for 113 years, and for 111 years, we played without Erling Haaland. We had Robert Lewandowski and then he left us in 2014, but we played football in ’15, ’16, ’17 until now.

“Then next came Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and then Erling Haaland and you can be sure if Erling takes a decision to leave us, we will find the next [player] 100% percent.”

Jadon Sancho: Manchester United agree transfer from Borussia Dortmund

What do I need to know?

Dortmund had a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ with Sancho and told the forward he would be allowed to leave this summer if a club meets his valuation.

The Athletic understands Manchester United have now met that price.

Sancho will undergo a medical ahead of his official unveiling as a Manchester United player.

The Athletic understands that Sancho, who is currently on international duty with England at Euro 2020, has already started the process of finding a house in the Manchester area.

How well has he done at Dortmund?

He has done incredibly well since moving to Dortmund from Manchester City in the summer of 2017.

He has scored 50 goals in 137 appearances for the German heavyweights, and helped them win the German Cup last season.

He also finished the 2020-21 season on a hot streak of 13 goals in his last 21 games.

Sancho has endured something of a frustrating summer, however, making just one six-minute substitute appearance for Gareth Southgate’s England in the three Euro 2020 group matches. He was meanwhile an unused substitute in the 2-0 win over Germany in the round of 16.

How long have United wanted to sign him?

Sancho is a long-term United target.

United’s manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made it clear he wants new faces this summer after his side finished second in the Premier League, 12 points adrift of champions Manchester City.

Solskjaer has said: “If we want to take up the challenge with City, we need to strengthen our squad.”

Juventus-Porto and Borussia Dortmund-Sevilla odds, expert picks in UEFA Champions League

The first two Champions League quarterfinalists will be confirmed on Tuesday as Juventus host Porto and Sevilla travel to Borussia Dortmund for two ties separated by one-goal margins. Federico Chiesa’s late goal halved Juventus’ first-leg deficit in Porto and perhaps makes them favorites to reach the last eight for the fifth time in seven years. Borussia Dortmund will be expecting to join them after they overcame an early deficit to win 3-2 away to Sevilla, Erling Haaland further burgeoning his reputation on the European stage with an outstanding brace.

But how do our panel of experts predict Tuesday’s games will play out? Read on for their predictions and remember you can catch all the action on Paramount+.

Juventus vs. Porto

Time: Tuesday, 3 p.m. ET (Paramount+)
Juventus -225; Draw +340; Porto +650 (odds via William Hill Sportsbook)

Latest Odds:

Juventus
-1.5

Rongen’s take: Juve have won nine of their last 10 home games in all competitions (one draw), keeping clean sheets in six matches. With Alvaro Morata scoring a brace in their last win vs Lazio and Cristiano Ronaldo rested, I expect Juve to advance. Pick: Juventus 2, Porto 0 (Juventus advance 3-2 on aggregate)

Romano’s take: Juventus are betting everything on the Champions League and cannot miss this opportunity. The team will have Leonardo Bonucci, Juan Cuadrado and Alvaro Morata back. Pick: Juventus 2, Porto 0 (Juventus advance 3-2 on aggregate)

Echegaray’s take: Andrea Pirlo knows — as Serie A looks more and more likely to go to Inter — that the Champions League is his only saving grace this season. Losing in the round of 16 would be disastrous, especially for Cristiano Ronaldo and what it means to his future. I think Porto will struggle to maintain a focused Juve and Ronaldo, who didn’t play a full game in their win against Lazio this past weekend, will take advantage. Federico Chiesa will also score in this one. Pick: Juventus 2, Porto 0 (Juventus advance 3-2 on aggregate)

West’s take: At home, with the added boost of Giorgio Chiellini back in training and needing just one goal? I’m going with CR7 and Juventus. I don’t think it’ll be pretty, but I think the home side get the job done with a narrow win. Pick: Juventus 1, Porto 0 (Juventus advance 2-2 on away-goal tiebreaker)

Johnson’s take: The away goal in Portugal will be crucial for the Italians as they will get the job done at home and advance to the quarterfinals. Juve advance. Pick: Juventus 1, Porto 0 (Juventus advance 2-2 on away-goal tiebreaker)

Benge’s take: This really will not be easy at all for Juve, who signed Cristiano Ronaldo to get them across the line in the Champions League and have instead fallen way back into the chasing pack. Federico Chiesa was the first player other than CR7 to score a knockout goal for the Bianconeri in three years and if Ronaldo doesn’t come up big I’d be tempted to gravitate towards Porto. Still, he should have just about enough in the tank to lift an ordinary team to the last eight. Pick: Juventus 2, Porto 0 (3-2 aggregate)

Gonzalez’s take: After laying an egg in the first leg, Juventus rebound through Cristiano Ronaldo, who scores twice to see The Old Lady through. Pick: Juventus 2, Porto 0 (Juventus advance 3-2 on aggregate)

Herrera’s take: Porto delivered a first-leg upset going up two goals, but Juventus was able to cut into the lead in the winding minutes. Expect Juventus to be motivated by the loss with the home advantage in tow. Pick: Juventus 2, Porto 0 (Juventus advance 3-2 on aggregate)

Goodman’s take: Despite a poor performance from everybody from manager Andrea Pirlo to star Cristiano Ronaldo in the first leg, Juventus remain comfortably in the tie. Even an average performance should be more than enough to see them through this time around against a Porto side that’s from their vintage versions. Pick: Juventus 2, Porto 0 (Juventus advance 3-2 on aggregate)

Borussia Dortmund vs. Sevilla

Time: Tuesday, 3 p.m. ET (Paramount+)
Borussia Dortmund +111; Draw +270; Sevilla +225 (odds via William Hill Sportsbook)

Latest Odds:

Borussia Dortmund
-0.5

Rongen’s take: Dortmund are unbeaten in their last seven UCL home games (two draws) — that streak will continue. Pick: Borussia Dortmund 2, Sevilla 1 (Borussia Dortmund advance 5-3 on aggregate)

Romano’s take: Erling Haaland is dominating in the Champions League, and he’ll be the difference again. Sevilla will put their heart into it but BVB are in good form. Pick: Borussia Dortmund 2, Sevilla 1 (Borussia Dortmund advance 5-3 on aggregate)

Echegaray’s take: This is so hard to figure out and yes, I am going on a full limb here, and may possibly be wrong in so many ways. But I just think Sevilla — who are getting healthier — will want to amend a few things in this game and take advantage from some key injuries. This depends on Erling Haaland and his fitness, as well as Raphael Guerreiro, who is doubtful for this game. No Jadon Sancho too? I feel Sevilla will go all out. But I can already sense this one biting me in the ass. Pick: Borussia Dortmund 1, Sevilla 3 (Sevilla advance 5-4 on aggregate)

West’s take: This one’s incredibly tough to call. Both Dortmund and Sevilla suffered demoralizing losses over the weekend and it’s impossible to say which version of the sides will show up on Tuesday. I’m going to hang my hat on Erling Haaland and the added benefit of three away goals Dortmund managed in the first tie. Pick: Borussia Dortmund 2, Sevilla 1 (Borussia Dortmund advance 5-3 on aggregate)

Johnson’s take: The Spaniards are losing form at the worst possible time with the Copa del Rey now gone and the defense far from solid. The Germans have turned a corner recently and that will continue with a victory to reach the quarters. Dortmund go through. Pick: Borussia Dortmund 2, Sevilla 1 (Borussia Dortmund advance 5-3 on aggregate)

Benge’s take: Sevilla have wobbled quite significantly since that first-leg loss to Dortmund, who seemed to get their number with explosive counters led by Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland. Having the latter (Sancho is out with a thigh problem), Marco Reus and so many other attacking talents in the mix mean you have to assume Dortmund are going to get goals. As for Sevilla, I’m not sure they’ve kicked their addiction to making mediocre chances. Pick: Borussia Dortmund 2, Sevilla 1 (Borussia Dortmund advance 5-3 on aggregate)

Gonzalez’s take: Dortmund get some key players in time, put three past Sevilla again and advance without too much concern. Pick: Borussia Dortmund 3, Sevilla 1 (Borussia Dortmund advance 6-3 on aggregate)

Herrera’s take: A thrilling first leg between the sides is gonna set up an interesting second leg, but an in-form Erling Haaland will be the difference-maker in this one. Pick: Borussia Dortmund 3, Sevilla 1 (Borussia Dortmund advance 6-3 on aggregate)

Goodman’s take: Two teams that aren’t playing particularly well at the moment means that this match will be a balm to somebody no matter what happens. Dortmund are going to play an open style no matter what, but Sevilla probably don’t have the explosiveness to capitalize on Dortmund’s defensive vulnerability. Pick: Borussia Dortmund 2, Sevilla 1 (Borussia Dortmund advance 5-3 on aggregate)

Borussia Dortmund place Erling Haaland on ‘emergency sales list’

Erling Braut Haaland put another feather in his young cap yesterday against Sevilla, after scoring his 18th goal in just 13 Champions League appearances. Despite moving to Borussia Dortmund just twelve months ago, every major European club has him on their radar and will try to win the race for his signature as soon as possible. The 20-year-old has a €75m release clause which becomes active in 2022, but clubs like Chelsea are apparently willing to pay over-the-top to sign him before then.

Of course, BVB are expected to put up a fight for their crown jewel, but according to reports from BBC and German outlet WAZ (via Sport Witness), the Bundesliga side’s financial crisis could compel them to sell.

According to the reports, Dortmund have already lost €26m in matchday revenue and could lose up to another €75m if they miss out on Champions League qualification — they are currently just 6th in the league. In order to make up for these losses, BVB have drawn up a eight-man “emergency sales list” that includes Jadon Sancho, Axel Witsel, Manuel Akanji, Mahmoud Dahoud, Giovanni Reyna, Jude Bellingham, Raphael Guerreiro and Erling Haaland, however, the departures of the last four would be a last resort — though missing out on Europe would not be helpful in any sense.

The often Chelsea-linked Sancho is the most likely to depart, with BVB even reducing his asking price to €100m. However, if the financial situation further deteriorates, there will be further sales, and Haaland would certainly fetch another €100m or so.

Of course, this doesn’t make Chelsea the favorites for his signature by any means, but with the club in a healthy financial situation, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Blues make a concerted effort to sign the generational talent.
