Cincinnati Bengals vs Kansas City Chiefs summary: score, stats, highlights | AFC Championship
The Kansas City Chiefs are headed to their third Super Bowl in the last four years after defeating the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship on Sunday night. Harrison Butker hit a game winning 45 yard field goal to seal the 23-20 win from Arrowhead Stadium.
Mahomes shakes off ankle injury
All of the talk coming into the Championship Round surrounded the status of Patrick Mahomes’ high ankle sprain he suffered last week against the Jacksonville Jaguars. From the first series, the Kansas City quarterback looked mobile, but maybe not as agile as we are used to seeing him on a weekly basis. There were a few moments of discomfort throughout the game for the KC QB, but when it counted the most Mahomes took care of buisness with his legs.
It was supposed to be a matchup between two high flying teams that have grown quite familiar with each other over the last few years. The Bengals have had the Chiefs numbers in recent history, but that wasn’t the case in the AFC Title game from Arrowhead.
The high octane shootout we all expected got off to a slow start as the KC defense pressured Cincy QB Joe Burrow from the first possession onwards. They had four first half sacks, and made it difficult for the Bengals gunslinger to feel comfortable in the pocket.
Slow start for high powered offenses
Despite the defensive dominance, Mahomes and the offense struggled to punch the ball in the end zone, settling for two field goals in their opening two possessions. Cincinnati added a field goal to the score board, and it wasn’t until late in the first half that the Chiefs found the end zone for the first time. On 4th and 1, the Chiefs decided to let Mahomes make a play on a roll out and he hit Travis Kelce for a 14 yard TD to take a 13-3 lead with under four minutes to go in the second quarter.
A late Evan McPherson field goal to close the half cut the lead to a touchdown, and Bengals offense finally turned on coming out of halftime. Burrow drove the Bengals down the field and hit Tee Higgins for a 27 yard TD to tie the game up at 13-13.
Kansas City would not take too long to respond. They punched back on the next possession as Mahomes led an 11 play, 77 yard drive that ended with a 19 yard dart over the middle to Marquez Valdes-Scantling for the go ahead touchdown. After forcing Cincy into a three and out, the Chiefs were driving down field again, but Mahomes made a rare mistake when the ball slipped out of his hands on a pass to the flat and the fumble was recovered by Sam Hubbard.
Six plays later the Bengals would tie up the game with a Samaje Perine TD run from two yards out in the early stages of the fourth quarter.
Butker with the game winner
Punts from the Chiefs and the second interception of Burrow’s nights the stage for Mahomes to steal the show late in the fourth quarter. With 30 seconds left on the clock, KC took over from their 47 yard line after a fantastic punt return from Skyy Moore. Joseph Ossai helped the Kansas City cause when Mahomes went scrambling on a 3rd and 4 from around midfield, picked up the first down, and then was hit late by the Bengals defender. The penalty moved the Chiefs into field goal position and Butker drilled the game winner from 45 yards out with three seconds on the clock.
Mahomes didn’t look perfect, but on a night where he couldn’t rely on his mobility in the pocket he still went for 326 yards and three TDs on 29/43 passing, while Burrow went 26/41 with 270 yards, a TD and threw two interceptions.
The Chiefs are back in the Super Bowl for the third time in four years and are set for a showdown in the desert against the Philadelphia Eagles from Glendale, Arizona in two weeks time.
Bengals’ Joseph Ossai laments penalty that led to Chiefs’ win
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Cincinnati Bengals players and coaches gave defensive end Joseph Ossai words of solace and comfort following a penalty that led to the Kansas City Chiefs’ game-winning field goal in the AFC Championship Game.
But in the moments after Sunday’s 23-20 loss, Ossai said it was extremely tough to process the sentiment. With reddened eyes and a soft tone, Ossai lamented his penalty in the closing seconds that put Kansas City in position for Harrison Butker’s 45-yard field goal on the penultimate play from scrimmage.
“I gotta learn from experience,” Ossai said, relaying the advice he received from Cincinnati defensive end Sam Hubbard. “I gotta know not to get close to that quarterback when he’s close to that sideline if it’s anything that could possibly cause a penalty in a dire situation like that. I gotta do better.”
On third-and-4 at Cincinnati’s 47-yard line, Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes scrambled to his right to gain a first down. As Mahomes stepped out of bounds, Ossai shoved Mahomes from behind. The two tumbled to the ground on Cincinnati’s sideline, and Ossai was whistled for unnecessary roughness.
“I was just in full chase mode,” Ossai said. “I was trying to push him, maybe get him going backwards because I knew he was going for that sideline. I was trying to make him go backwards, get that clock running. I haven’t seen it yet. I don’t know how far out of bounds we were.”
The 15-yard penalty put Kansas City in position for the kick with :03 remaining. After winning 10 straight games — and having posted three consecutive victories against Kansas City — the Bengals were eliminated from the playoffs in a rematch of last year’s AFC Championship Game.
Ossai said he injured his left knee in the incident with Mahomes. He will get an MRI to determine what damage, if any, occurred.
He also said Bengals coach Zac Taylor was among those who offered encouragement after the game.
“He just told me to keep my head up,” Ossai said. “Told me there were a bunch of different plays we had to make, that it didn’t come down to that one, and we just gotta keep moving forward.”
There were several issues that plagued Cincinnati in its attempt to repeat as AFC champion and return to the Super Bowl.
As a team, the Bengals committed nine penalties for 71 yards. Quarterback Joe Burrow was sacked five times. Kansas City wide receiver Skyy Moore returned Drue Chrisman’s punt 29 yards, giving the home team the ball at its own 47-yard line with just 30 seconds left in the contest.
Bengals defensive tackle BJ Hill, who flanked Ossai as he answered questions from reporters in the locker room after the game, said he had no qualms with Ossai on that penalty.
“I don’t have [any] hard feelings about that play at all because I knew what his intention was: just to play hard,” Hill said.
Hill praised Ossai for his efforts in his first NFL season. The 22-year-old out of the University of Texas was drafted in the third round in 2021 but missed that entire campaign after he suffered a meniscus injury in the preseason. When Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson experienced a wrist issue toward the end of this regular season, Ossai’s usage increased.
Against Kansas City and Mahomes, Ossai registered a team-high two quarterback hits.
“You just build that young guy up and let him understand it’s going to come down to inches in this league,” Cincinnati defensive tackle DJ Reader said. “And he’ll be there to make a lot of plays.
“That play is going to find him again. Those roles are going to find him again as a player, and just be ready for it.”
Reader said he had no doubt about that.
“This pain is going to drive him to be great,” Reader said. “He’ll get there.”
Chiefs beat Bengals in AFC title game after another Burrow-Mahomes thriller | NFL
Patrick Mahomes scrambled for a first down on his badly sprained right ankle, then was shoved late out of bounds by Joseph Ossai, giving Harrison Butker a chance to kick a 45-yard field goal with just a few seconds remaining and give the Kansas City Chiefs a 23-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC title game on Sunday night.
The Chiefs finally beat the Bengals after three straight losses, including a three-point overtime defeat in last year’s title game, and will play the Philadelphia Eagles – coach Andy Reid’s old team – in their third Super Bowl in four years.
“I’ve watched them all year long, great quarterback, great entire team,” Mahomes said of the Eagles. “It’s going to be a great challenge for us, but I’m going to celebrate this one first. I don’t think we have any cigars, but we’ll be ready to go in the Super Bowl.”
Mahomes, who hurt his ankle against Jacksonville in the divisional round, threw for 326 yards and two touchdowns, even though he was missing three of his wide receivers to injuries by the end. Marquez Valdes-Scantling led the way with 116 yards and a touchdown, while Travis Kelce – bad back and all – had seven catches for 78 yards and a score.
Yet it was Mahomes on his injured right ankle, rather than with his strong right arm, who rescued the Chiefs.
“At some points in games, you’ve gotta just put it all on the line,” Mahomes said. “The defense gave us a couple chances to get in field goal range, we didn’t get there. The defense got another stop for us and I knew I was going to get there somehow. So I just put it all on the line and we got in field goal range, and we’re at Arrowhead now and we’re in.”
The Chiefs got a crucial sack from Chris Jones to force a punt with 39 seconds left, and return man Skyy Moore broke free for 29 yards on the return. On 3rd-and-4 at the Bengals 47, Mahomes eluded pressure and scrambled toward the Bengals sideline, barely picking up the first down before Ossai gave him a shove from behind.
The penalty flags flew, the ball moved 15 yards closer and Butker’s kick was good.
“We’re not going to make it about one play. There was plenty of plays we left on the field today that could have put us in a better position,” Bengals coach Zac Taylor said. “The character of this football team, that’s never going to change. We’ve got the right people in the locker room, the right men leading this team and this organization.”
Joe Burrow, who was sacked five times and wobbly by the end, finished with 270 yards passing to go with a touchdown and two interceptions for the Bengals. Tee Higgins had six catches for 83 yards and the score.
The Chiefs were able to do early what the Buffalo Bills could not in last week’s divisional round: They ran roughshod over an ailing Bengals offensive line missing two starters to injury with another bothered by a sore knee.
Burrow was sacked three times in the first quarter alone and the Bengals offense did not gain a single yard.
Mahomes, whose ankle had been the subject of speculation all week, led Kansas City to a field goal on their opening possession. And when the Chiefs got the ball back, Mahomes did it again, but only after Kadarius Toney failed to pull in a nifty throw for a would-be touchdown – the incompletion was upheld upon review.
Cincinnati finally moved the ball in the second quarter, but they also had to settle for Evan McPherson’s chip-shot field goal.
The Chiefs finally reached the end zone late in the second quarter, moving briskly downfield behind a couple of nice grabs by Valdes-Scantling. The Bengals held on 3rd-and-1 at their 14-yard line, but the Chiefs went for it and Mahomes hit Kelce loosely covered by Jessie Bates III for the touchdown.
The Bengals drove 90 yards in the closing minutes, but only added a field goal to get within 13-6 at the break.
But their offense was just hitting its stride – and another classic was brewing.
After the Chiefs went three-and-out to start the second half, Burrow led the Bengals downfield, bolting through a yawning hole in the defense for a third-down conversion before hitting Higgins from 27 yards out to knot the game 13-13.
Mahomes, suddenly down three wide receivers to injuries and beginning to limp, gamely pressed on. He answered Burrow with a touchdown drive of his own, capped by a third-down throw to Valdes-Scantling to regain the lead.
The Chiefs had a chance to gain some breathing room later in the third quarter, but Mahomes somehow lost control of the ball before he could throw a pass and the Bengals pounced on the fumble. Six plays later – including an audacious fourth-down throw from Burrow to Ja’Marr Chase – Samaje Perine ran into the end zone to tie it at 20.
Burrow gave the Chiefs a chance when his deep throw to Higgins on third down was batted into the air and picked by rookie cornerback Josh Williams. Mahomes managed to move the Chiefs past midfield, but two runs went nowhere and his third-down throw to Jerick McKinnon was well short, forcing them to punt in Bengals territory.
The Chiefs defense held, though, giving Mahomes and their offense one more try. It was a chance they would take.

Everyone had eyes on Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes this week as he suffered a high ankle sprain in the win over the Jacksonville Jaguars Saturday. Despite that injury, head coach Andy Reid told reporters Friday that Mahomes will start Sunday and noted that “he’s moving around good.” Mahomes was a full participant in practice all week, and so were running back Jerick McKinnon (ankle) and linebacker Willie Gay Jr. (toe). With Mahomes starting, the Chiefs’ biggest injury concern involves Travis Kelce. The first-team All-Pro was added to the injury report after his back locked up Friday. Kelce was listed as a true game-time decision for Sunday’s game, but he’s active and will play. Wide receivers Mecole Hardman (pelvis) and Justin Watson (illness) are also questionable.
Meanwhile, the Bengals added Hayden Hurst to the team’s injury report ahead of Sunday’s AFC title game rematch with the Chiefs. Hurst, who was not on the injury report Wednesday, was limited during Thursday’s practice with a calf injury. On Friday, Hurst declared he’ll be on the field when the Bengals face Kansas City on Sunday. Not all the injury news was good for Cincinnati, as starting offensive linemen Alex Cappa (ankle) and Jonah Williams (knee) were both ruled out for the second straight game. Cappa has been out since he injured his ankle against the Ravens in Week 18, while Williams missed last week’s game after he dislocated a kneecap during the Bengals’ playoff win over Baltimore. Jackson Carman and Max Scharping are once again expected to replace both players in the starting lineup.
