First Call: Kevin Colbert may be scouting QB prospect; ex-Steeler signs with Bengals; Dan Marino’s milestone

The Steelers may already be scouting a quarterback for next year’s draft. The Bengals have signed a former Steelers free agent. The Raiders Maxx Crosby raised eyebrows with his performance Monday night against the Baltimore Ravens.

And we celebrate a Pitt football legend’s birthday. All of this in today’s First Call.

Tar Heel town

Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert was at North Carolina’s football practice Tuesday.

We know that because Tar Heels coach Mack Brown tweeted out this photo with Colbert.

It’s not certain who Colbert was looking at, but it’s safe to assume that the Steelers were at least checking out Sam Howell.

He is perceived by some to be the best quarterback prospect in the NFL Draft next spring. But Howell has struggled a bit this season. He has been sacked eight times and thrown three interceptions over the first two games.

In just over two seasons at Chapel Hill, Howell has thrown 72 touchdowns and 17 picks while completing 64.3% of his passes.

With Ben Roethlisberger’s status up in the air and no clear-cut starter established for the long term after he leaves, many are wondering whether the Steelers will make a splash in the draft or in free agency this spring.

Back with Bengals?

The Cincinnati Bengals signed a former Steeler in advance of a Week 3 showdown between the AFC North rivals.

Safety Sean Davis’ first stint with Pittsburgh lasted from 2016-19. He was picked up by Washington in March 2020 but was let go in September. Then he re-signed with the Steelers and played out last year in Pittsburgh before signing with the Indianapolis Colts this spring.

He was released Aug. 31, then latched onto the team’s practice squad before becoming a free agent again Sept. 14. That’s when the Bengals decided to scoop him up.

Davis, a sixth-year player out of Maryland, has played in 65 career games and has 244 tackles, 2½ sacks, 21 passes defensed, five interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Cincinnati shifted safety Ricardo Allen to injured reserve because of hand and hamstring injuries suffered during the Week 1 win over Minnesota.

Raider rewards

The first AFC Defensive Player of the Week for 2021 wasn’t T.J. Watt or Cameron Heyward.

That’s despite a stellar performance by both Steelers in a win against the Buffalo Bills.

Instead, the honor went to Las Vegas Raider Maxx Crosby. The defensive end had six tackles and two sacks along with numerous other snaps that led to hurries and pressures of Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.

He dusted former Steelers tackle Alejandro Villanueva on numerous occasions.

But the Raiders also got some bad news. Fellow defensive lineman Gerald McCoy was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury. Damion Square is replacing him on the roster.

Big b-day for Dan

Legendary Pitt quarterback Dan Marino celebrated a birthday Wednesday — his 60th.

Wait, that’s impossible. If Marino is 60, then that makes me … old enough to have remarkable moments like this one where time is evaporating before my very eyes.

And that would make this highlight practically ancient.

But it still looks good, doesn’t it?

Notable PFF grades from Bengals’ preseason win vs Bucs

The Cincinnati Bengals kicked off their preseason slate with a solid performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The box score doesn’t look too pretty, but several players stood out for their individual performances.

For a more in-depth look at those performances, here are some Pro Football Focus grades that stood out from the game:

  • D’Ante Smith led the Bengals’ offensive line with an 84.8 pass-blocking grade. Smith had a very clean 16 snaps in pass protection with 11 coming as the second-team left guard, and five as the third-team left tackle. Michael Jordan was right behind Smith with a pass-blocking grade of 80. Jordan was only on the field for eight passing plays, but nevertheless, he produced a solid outing blocking for quarterback Brandon Allen.
  • In run blocking, Isaiah Prince churned out a 71.3 grade on a team-high 33 run-blocking snaps. Prince replaced Jonah Williams at left tackle with the second-team o-line and was noticeably solid in zone blocking.
  • Running behind Prince for most of the game was Jacques Patrick, who produced a 71.3 rushing grade. Patrick finished the game with 71 yards on just 15 carries. 58 of his 71 yards came after contact.
  • The offense’s leader in overall grade was none other than Trenton Irwin, who came away with a 79.7. Irwin notably hauled in a tough catch over the middle before being rocked by Buccaneers cornerback Cameron Kinley. He finished the contest with three receptions for 35 yards on five targets.
  • On defense, Joseph Ossai and Darius Hodge both finished with 89.6 defense grades, both were just behind D.J. Reader’s 90.2 from just four snaps. The rookie edge duo wrecked havoc for most of the game and accounted for most of Cincinnati’s pass-rushing production. With the way Ossai was playing, he may’ve surpassed Reader had he not gotten injured.
  • Jalen Davis came to play as the team’s backup slot cornerback. He had a coverage grade of 79.3 thanks in part to a couple pass breakups that led to the defense’s two interceptions. Joe Bachie made some plays in pass defense as well, finishing with a coverage grade 76 and a pass breakup of his own.
  • One of those interceptions landed in the hands of Trayvon Henderson, but the backup safety’s best work came as a tackler. He led the defense with an 82.4 tackling grade. Henderson’s four tackles tied for the team lead to go with his interception.

Latest On Bengals’ Draft Plans

Three quarterbacks will almost certainly go off the board to start this year’s draft, marking the first time in 22 years that will have taken place. The Falcons are undecided on whether they should acquire Matt Ryan‘s heir apparent at No. 4. This puts the Bengals in position to land perhaps this draft’s top non-quarterback.

Picking fifth without a quarterback need, the Bengals will have a bevy of high-end offensive prospects from which to choose. Considering the issues they have had on their offensive line in recent years, they have been linked to Oregon tackle Penei Sewell. Zac Taylor, player personnel director Duke Tobin and offensive line coach Frank Pollack were in Eugene, Ore., for Sewell’s pro day, Tyler Dragon of the Cincinnati Enquirer tweets. Pollack told attendees Sewell impressed him, Tony Pauline of ProFootballNetwork.com tweets.

Sewell would make sense as a player who could be a long-term starter opposite left tackle Jonah Williams, but Tobin said the Bengals can acquire a starter-caliber lineman on the draft’s second night. Cincinnati has starter grades on O-linemen projected to go in the second and third rounds, Tobin said during a podcast with Bengals announcer Dan Hoard (Twitter link). Tobin added that the addition of veteran tackle Riley Reiff gives the team a better O-line outlook than it had in 2020 (Twitter link via ESPN.com’s Ben Baby).

Needs exist on the interior of Cincinnati’s O-line, and Tobin said more additions will take place. But the veteran executive understandably is not giving off the vibe the team must add an impact blocker early.

The Bengals also do not want to trade too far down from No. 5; they might not be interested in moving down at all. A best-player-available pick may suit the Bengals, who have included Joe Burrow in their pre-draft process, Tobin more or less confirmed (via Baby, on Twitter). Burrow has stumped for a Ja’Marr Chase reunion, according to Albert Breer of SI.com. The Eagles may well expect this to be the direction the Bengals go, with Breer noting Philly believes there is a good chance Cincy drafts Chase at No. 5. Possessing a greater receiver need than the Bengals do, the Eagles traded down from from No. 6 to No. 12 late last month.

The Bengals did not re-sign either of the top-10 receiver picks on last year’s roster — A.J. Green and John Ross — but have invested a first- or second-round pick in a wideout in three of the past five drafts. Chase opted out of his junior season but exploded for 84 receptions, 1,780 yards and 20 touchdown catches during Burrow’s Heisman-winning 2019. He and Burrow played together at LSU for two seasons.

Joe Burrow puts his stamp on the Bengals roster as the team makes moves in free agency

With the addition of edge rusher Trey Hendrickson, cornerbacks Mike Hilton and Chidobe Awuzie and Geno protégé Larry Ogunjobi at defensive tackle, the Bengals are poised to start two defensive starters from Taylor’s first game that opened the 2019 season in Seattle. The Fab Five all Zoomed with the Cincinnati media on a March Madness Friday. No question, they said, Burrow was a draw.

“Just seeing what they are building. Over these four years playing against these guys, I seen the type of players that they had and what they were building,” said Hilton, the former Steeler. “Once they brought in Joe (Burrow) to be the franchise guy, he showed me what he’s capable of and that definitely attracted me here. I’m excited to be here and get the train rolling.

With those players in the fold Thursday night and Reiff on his recruiting visit, Taylor adeptly got everyone together in an upstairs room at The Precinct, Ruby’s east side spot. Front and center of his recruiting effort was Burrow and he apparently had Reiff pretty much at hello.

“Just the way he conducts himself,” Reiff said. “Carries himself. Seems like a down-to-Earth Cincinnati-type guy. We just sat there crapped around a little bit. But really impressed with him. … Tough, Midwestern, blue-collar. Comes to work.”

Hilton, who played with Big Ben in Pittsburgh, also sensed Burrow’s big presence. All five of them got to see it when they passed through the rehab space and Hilton saw it at dinner.

“Man, just talking to him. Like I said he has an aura about him,” Hilton said. “He’s a young guy but he commands the room. He takes pride in being the leader of the team and just embraces the room.”

Reiff, 32, is the piece d’ resistance of the Bengals’ week-long free-agent effort spearheaded by director of pro scouting director Steven Radecivic.

The Bengals began the week looking for offensive linemen as well as edge rushers. They had one plan in which if the $15 million reduced salary cap drove down prices, they thought they’d have a chance to grab two edge rushers while also making a run at a guard.

But they also were prepared if the prices were at pre-pandemic levels and, like last year on the first day of free agency, when they quickly got off the linebackers, they adjusted to escalating numbers and went to another plan they had devised.

They knew they had to drop a big number on just one rusher and did when they inked Hendrickson on a club-record $60 million deal on the first night of free agency. Also that first day, they apparently had interest in the best guard on the market, Joe Thuney. But as the bidding skied beyond $50 million, they also knew Reiff was out there and they were noticing there were some good cornerbacks out there, too. They ended up getting two starters in Hilton and Awuzie for what many were paying for one cornerback.

Ogunjobi has been a thorn for the Bengals while playing in Cleveland and they had high marks on him. While they were filling the need for a three technique on Wednesday night, Radicevic was constantly on the phone getting Reiff in on a visit for Thursday.

“My agent reached out to me and was like, these guys are being pretty persistent,” Reiff said. “Would you like to go see what they are all about? I said, absolutely. Not being in this division we really didn’t have much crossover but once I got here I was super impressed with the guys, coaches and I’m excited.

“Tell you truth, if it didn’t work out. I just wanted to see the stadium. If it didn’t work out, I have played nine-10 years, usually you play in a lot of stadiums and I hadn’t played here. If all else went to fail at least I could say I have seen the stadium.”

Reiff was key. The Bengals wanted to give him more than a tour. They didn’t get Thuney, but they also knew they had a shot at Reiff, one of the NFL’s most consistent lineman since the Lions took him out of Iowa in the 2012 first round. A proven protector for Burrow had been a priority all along.

Bengals look to make moves in free agency

With many NFL teams strapped under a slashed salary cap and his team possessing financial flexibility, Bengals director of player personnel Duke Tobin said Monday his team hopes to get involved when free agency begins next week.

Although he called free agency “unpredictable,” and didn’t want to make any pronouncements about a process known to be more than mutable, Tobin also said, “We’re not going to sit on our hands,” as he made his first public comments of the offseason.

“The way we’ve managed our cap and coming into it the way that we are, I think we’ve got a certain advantage and we’re going to look to take advantage of that,” Tobin said in a Zoom call with Cincinnati media.
