Former halfpipe world champion Kyle Smaine killed in avalanche at age of 31 | Skiing

Kyle Smaine, a former halfpipe world champion skier, died in an avalanche in Japan on Sunday, his family have confirmed.

The 31-year-old, who won the halfpipe world title in 2015, had travelled to Japan from his home in Lake Tahoe, California, on a work trip where, according to an Instagram post, he was looking forward to the “unbelievable snow quality”.

On Sunday, he was among a group of Austrian and American skiers caught up in the avalanche on Nagano prefecture’s Mount Hakuba Norikura. Three of the skiers were eventually able to make their way down the mountain but Smaine and another man, who has yet to be identified, were later found dead according to local police. Japanese authorities had issued an avalanche warning for the area after heavy snow.

One of the American skiers, who was buried for 25 minutes before being dug out by rescuers, told Mountain Gazette: “We heard the crack. We realized: ‘It is a big one.’ We started running and then we got hit.”

The US embassy in Tokyo said it was “aware of the incident in Nagano prefecture and has been in touch with the relevant authorities to provide all appropriate assistance.”

Smaine had retired from international competition and his last high-profile event was in February 2018. Fellow athletes paid tribute to him on Sunday.

“We all did this for Kyle tonight,” two-time Olympic halfpipe skiing champion David Wise said on Sunday, after his X Games victory. “It’s a little bit of an emotional day for us. We lost a friend.”

Smaine’s wife, Jenna Dramise, wrote on Instagram that “tonight I hope to ride some pow or bikes with you in my dreams.”

Kyle Smaine reportedly among skiers killed in avalanche in Japan

Comment

Kyle Smaine, an American freestyle skier who was a halfpipe gold medalist at the 2015 world championships, was reportedly one of two men killed Sunday in an avalanche while backcountry skiing in Japan.

Smaine, a 31-year-old from South Lake Tahoe, Calif., was on a marketing trip for Ikon Pass and Nagano Tourism, according to the outdoor sports publication Mountain Gazette, and was in Japan for the “unbelievable snow quality,” he had written on Instagram. William Smaine, the skier’s father, confirmed that his son was one of the victims to NBC News.

A spokesperson from the State Department confirmed in an emailed statement that a U.S. citizen was killed but would not confirm that person’s identity, citing privacy concerns.

“The U.S. Department of State has no higher priority than the safety and security of U.S. citizens overseas,” the statement read. “We are aware of an avalanche in Nagano, Japan on January 29. We can confirm the death of a U.S. citizen in Nagano on January 30. Due to privacy considerations, we have no additional details at this time.”

A snowboarder was caught in an avalanche. He filmed his 300-foot slide.

A spokesperson at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo said it was “aware of the incident in Nagano Prefecture and has been in touch with the relevant authorities to provide all appropriate assistance.”

At least five skiers from the United States and Austria were caught in the avalanche on the eastern slope of Mount Hakuba Norikura, a Nagano Prefecture police spokesperson told Reuters. Three were able to escape the avalanche, but two skiers were found dead. Weather forced a search to be suspended, and their bodies were recovered Monday.

An avalanche warning had been issued for the area, with Japan dealing with widespread heavy snow and record cold. Backcountry skiing is popular among advanced skiers and snowboarders, lured by fresh, deep snow and the absence of crowds. “This,” Smaine had written on Instagram along with video of him skiing, “is what brings me back to Japan each winter.”

But even an experienced skier or snowboarder can trigger or be caught by a naturally occurring avalanche, which starts a race against the clock — and the odds — for rescue teams. Although most victims are buried by an average of only three feet of snow, the prospects for survival become increasingly unlikely after about 15 minutes, Dale Atkins, a past president of the American Avalanche Association and a former forecaster with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, told The Washington Post in 2021. When the avalanche stops, the snow compacts around victims, becoming almost like concrete.

Grant Gunderson, a Mountain Gazette photographer, and Adam Ü, a professional skier from Glacier, Wash., also were on the trip, and Ü told the Mountain Gazette that Smaine and the other deceased skier, who has not been identified, were transitioning their backcountry gear into uphill mode when the avalanche occurred.

“It was the last run of the last day of our trip,” Ü told the publication.

As news of the tragedy swept through the freestyle skiing community, there were several remembrances on social media. Joss Christensen, a Park City, Utah, freestyle skier, replied to Smaine’s most recent video: “Wish we had more time to ski these past few years. Thanks for always being such a positive energy Kyle.”

The U.S. Free Ski Team wrote on Instagram that it had lost “an incredible person, friend, skier and teammate to the mountains,” describing Smaine as “a fierce competitor but an even better person and friend.”

Travis Ganong, an Olympian and freestyle skier, wrote that he was “heartbroken to hear of the passing of my friend. … He loved skiing more than anyone I knew. You will be missed.”

Mio Inuma reported from Tokyo.

Two missing skiers presumed dead after Nagano avalanche

Two men were presumed dead Monday in a backcountry accident near a ski resort in Nagano Prefecture, police said, a day after the pair were caught in an avalanche.

Nagano Prefectural Police confirmed the two men had been found in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest, a term commonly used in Japan before a death can be officially confirmed by a doctor.

Authorities said they were unable to immediately confirm the nationalities of the men, who are believed to be foreign citizens.

Julian Sands missing: Avalanche risk as air search resumed for missing actor

Julian Sands: Who is the Hollywood British actor missing in California?

Ground crews are still unable to continue their search efforts for missing actor Julian Sands, due to the risk of avalanches in the area.

Mr Sands, 65, was reported missing during a hiking trip in the Baldy Bowl area of the San Gabriel mountains on Friday, as searches by local authorities continue by “helicopter and drones when weather permits”.

“The air search is being resumed, but we have not been able to resume a ground search yet due to icy conditions and a threat of avalanches,” Gloria Huerta, Public Information Officer for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department told the BBC on Friday.

She said there was still “no time set” for when they would begin again.

In other news, the phone belonging to Mr Sands appears to show he was on the move heading into a mountainous area in southern California on the day he was reported missing.

The search has been ramped up of late as officials use mobile phone forensics to help pinpoint the location of the actor.

The last known pictures of Sands mountaineering

The family of Julian Sands have shared with The Independent the last known images of him mountaineering.

Poignant photographs that he sent to his grandson Billy in September show him looking relaxed and happy while climbing the 14,783ft Weisshorn mountain in the Swiss Alps.

The Weisshorn, a three-ridged pyramid-shaped mountain about 15 miles from the Matterhorn, is described by climbing experts as “more serious” than its famous neighbour. “One of the most difficult 4,000m peaks, the Weisshorn is a long and serious climb by any route,” according to Alpine Guides.

Sands is a wild Byronesque romantic, says friend

A friend of Julian Sands has described him as “wild” and “a Byronesque romantic”.

“Julian is wild and never contained by rules or boundaries. He is a Byronesque romantic and an adventurer who is drawn to the extremes of nature, relishing the freedom of mountains which he conquers all over the world,” they told The Independent.

“He is deeply inspired by the Romantic poets and his performances of their work are spellbinding and come from a passionate love of literature.

“He is a friend bound by Homeric qualities of loyalty and living life to the full. He takes no prisoners and yet is as gentle and generous and sensitive as the poets he so admired.”

Mount Baldy conditions ‘extremely dangerous’ since Sands went missing

The conditions on Mount Baldy, where rescuers are searching for Julian Sands, are “adverse and extremely dangerous” and are not favourable even for highly experienced hikers, police warned this week.

“Due to the high winds, the snow has turned to ice making hiking extremely dangerous,” San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said on Friday.

“Sheriff’s Search and Rescue efforts are often hampered by poor weather along with dangerous avalanche conditions. The recent storms that brought the snow and ice conditions are not favorable for hikers, even those that feel they have a high level of experience.”
