Michael Barajas allegedly kidnapped, sexually assaulted woman for 3 weeks

A 36-year-old Michigan man with filed down teeth is in custody after police discovered he kidnapped a vulnerable woman, sexually assaulted her for three weeks and threatened to “rip out her throat” if she didn’t do what he told her to.

Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson on Wednesday revealed disturbing details of the case in a press conference that led to the arrest of Michael Barajas, 36, on Dec. 8. Swanson said Barajas had filed his teeth down to points and threatened to bite the victim and rip her throat out during the course of her three-week  imprisonment.

Swanson said the week of Thanksgiving a pregnant woman in her early 20s had been kicked out of her house. Barajas spotted the vulnerable woman walking on the street alone and pulled his car up. He offered her a warm shower, a bite to eat and a place to stay.

The victim accepted, not knowing that she would be repeatedly raped and trafficked for the following three weeks.

Once the pair arrived to a dilapidated home, Barajas allegedly locked her inside a room and tied her to a bed. Genesee officials said they found rope at the scene. The victims’ room had an exterior deadbolt and all the windows in the hone were screwed shut.

Barajas repeatedly sexually assaulted the pregnant woman, and had other people come over to sexually assault and traffic her, police said.

“This guy used the opportunity to not only sexually assault but have people come over and traffic her as she was tied forcibly to the bed while they assaulted her,” Swanson said.

Michael Barajas is charged with kidnapping a pregnant woman, raping and trafficking her.

Swanson said the woman attempted to escape the dead-bolted room three times.

The first time she ran out of an open door during an exchange, but Barajas and the other suspects chased her down, firing shots at her and dragging her back to the bedroom.

A second attempted escape also led to her recapture. On Dec. 8, the victim suffered a medical emergency related to her pregnancy and was seen by nurses who recognized that the woman was in serious need of help.

Swanson said during the entire time she was kept at the house, Barajas threatened to bite her with his sharp fangs.

“This guy is a monster,” Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson said.

“Barajas threatened that if she didn’t do everything that he told her to do, that he would bite her neck and rip out her throat,” Swanson said.

The sheriff held up a photo of Barajas and then showed his teeth, which appear to be filed to sharp points.

Swanson said Barajas groomed the woman by filling her need of shelter and even forced her to write a letter where she described Barajas as “her daddy.”

“This guy is a monster. If you look at the teeth that are filed down and the threats of ripping out a throat, I will say no more,” he said.

After the nurses alerted authorities to the woman’s need, police raided the home and arrested Barajas on multiple charges, including human trafficking, kidnapping, sexual assault, possession of methamphetamine and ecstasy and other charges.

Barajas is booked in jail on a $250,000 bond — $35,000 bond per charge — and is scheduled to be in court for a probable cause conference Dec. 22.

The sheriff says the investigation is still ongoing and authorities are asking for tips finding the other suspects. Anyone who knows something about the crime or any known associates of Barajas is being asked to call 911 or 810-257-3422.

Listen to the terrifying rumble of Earth’s magnetic field being assaulted by a solar storm

If you’re seeking something unsettling from space this October, an audio track of converted data released by the European Space Agency (ESA) provides a disturbing sonic representation of the Earth’s magnetic field under attack.

Earth’s magnetic field is generated by superheated, swirling liquid iron in the planet’s core and, crucially, keeps life on the surface safe from a barrage of cosmic radiation and charged particles. We can sometimes see these interactions as green-blue aurora near the poles, but it’s not usually something that can be heard.

However, a team from the Technical University of Denmark has made the invisible audible by gathering data from a trio of ESA satellites launched in 2013 to measure the Earth‘s magnetic signals and converting it to sound. The result is a somewhat unnerving representation of a rumbling magnetic field and a clash with particles from a solar flare.

The audio is available online, but it was designed to be experienced via a sound system consisting of over 30 loudspeakers dug into the ground at the Solbjerg Square in Copenhagen, Denmark.

“The team used data from ESA’s Swarm satellites, as well as other sources, and used these magnetic signals to manipulate and control a sonic representation of the core field,” musician and project supporter Klaus Nielsen, said in a statement.

“The rumbling of Earth’s magnetic field is accompanied by a representation of a geomagnetic storm that resulted from a solar flare on Nov. 3, 2011, and indeed it sounds pretty scary,” Nielsen said.

The magnetic signals used include those passing through mantle, crust and oceans, as well as from the ionosphere and magnetosphere, so sounds suggestive of an earthquake are somewhat fitting.

Visitors to the square can listen to the data sonification project until Oct. 30.

USPS letter carrier sexually assaulted, robbed of postal truck on South Pulaski in Little Village, Chicago police say

CHICAGO (WLS) — A 28-year-old female USPS letter carrier was the target of a criminal sexual assault Saturday morning around 9:15 a.m. in the 2800 block of South Pulaski Road in Chicago’s Little Village Neighborhood, according to Chicago police.

The victim was getting into her postal vehicle when she found a man hiding inside, police said.

CPD issued a community alert that said the suspect pulled her by the hair and directed her to drive to a nearby parking lot. He then ordered the victim to the back of the van and remove her clothing. As he tried to escape through back of the van, the suspect beat her and removed some of her clothing, police said.

The victim eventually managed to escape with the suspect then driving off in her postal vehicle, police said. The abandoned truck was found a short time later in the 4500 block of West Marquette Road in West Lawn.

NYC pain management doctor allegedly assaulted woman

A Manhattan pain management doctor was the one inflicting the suffering when he allegedly assaulted a woman and tossed her cellphone out a 30th floor window, authorities said.

JeanJacques “Jack” Mbabuike, 38, was arrested Aug. 29, at a luxury building on Sixth Avenue and West 27th Street in Chelsea, according to the NYPD and a criminal complaint.

He was also charged that day with a November 2021 incident when he was accused of pushing a woman to the ground, documents show.

The victim in both instances was his girlfriend at the time and she was treated at a hospital for bruises after the latest alleged assault, according to a source familiar with the case.

Mbabuike was arraigned on Aug. 31 and released without bail. Criminal Court Judge Melissa Lewis granted a temporary order of protection for the victim, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office said.

An earlier case against Mbabuike was sealed, the office said.

He is due in court Friday.

Mbabuike, a graduate of the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, practices at NYC Pain MD in Lower Manhattan.

He did not immediately return a message left with the office. His lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The state Department of Health, which disciplines doctors, said it “takes the health and safety of patients very seriously, and takes appropriate action in instances of potential misconduct.” It would not comment further on any potential investigation.

Claim Tory Lanez Assaulted Singer August Alsina Being ‘Thoroughly Examined’ by L.A. Prosecutors – Rolling Stone

As Tory Lanez awaits trial on felony charges he allegedly shot at — and wounded — Megan Thee Stallion in her feet during an attack in Los Angeles two years ago, the rapper is now facing accusations he assaulted singer August Alsina in Chicago over the weekend.

Alsina’s allegations, shared online with multiple photos showing the Louisiana crooner’s bloody lip and other wounds, are now the subject of an out-of-state inquiry from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, which is prosecuting the firearm assault on Megan.

“We are aware of the allegations that the defendant attacked artist August Alsina and are investigating these claims. The allegations are serious and will be thoroughly examined,” the DA’s Office says in a statement to Rolling Stone.

It was Sunday that Alsina claimed in a series of graphic Instagram posts that Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, attacked him at the “Fall Back In Love Comedy & Music Jam” show held at the Arie Crown Theatre in Chicago Saturday night.

Alsina, 30, described Peterson as a hyperactive “leprechaun” who rushed him with eight “oversized” bodyguards to ask why the singer didn’t “dap him up,” meaning shake his hand. Alsina says he replied that he didn’t think the two were friends and that he’s been advised by his doctor to avoid shaking hands amid ongoing concerns with Covid and Monkeypox. (Video of Alsina leaving Peterson hanging made the rounds on social media.)

The singer shared more photos showing pink, fleshy wounds on the inside of his lip, near an elbow, and on a knee. He claims he was the victim of a “sneak attack” by Peterson, who then allegedly ran “back off into the building.”

Chicago Police confirmed to Rolling Stone that a 30-year-old man was allegedly “punched in the face” by another 30-year-old man at around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, listing a location that matches the theater.

“Detectives are investigating,” the department says, declining to name the victim. The department says offenders are identified by name only after they are charged or an arrest warrant has been issued.

Peterson’s criminal lawyer in Los Angeles did not immediately return Rolling Stone‘s request for comment.

Prosecutors on Megan’s case, meanwhile, had no problem jumping into the fray. They previously asked the judge hearing her felony assault case to revoke or raise the rapper’s bail amid allegations he violated protective orders.

Peterson, 30, had his bail hiked to $250,000 in September 2021 after a judge found he violated the stay-away order prohibiting him from coming within 100 yards of Megan or harassing her in any way. Prosecutors said he attended the Rolling Loud Festival in Miami in July 2021 and “attempted to rush the stage” while Megan was performing. Disguised in a costume, he also hopped onstage with DaBaby while Megan was still in the venue and her song “Cry Baby” was playing, prosecutors said in their bail motion obtained by Rolling Stone.

Peterson’s bail was increased again in April, to $350,000, after a judge found the “SKAT” rapper violated protective orders prohibiting him from harassing Megan or discussing discovery in the case with outside parties.

The start of Peterson’s criminal trial in Los Angeles was delayed again last week, with a judge setting a new return date of Nov. 28. Prosecutors say they expect jury selection to begin Dec. 5.

Ricardo Cruciani, Who Sexually Assaulted Patients, Found Dead at Rikers

A doctor found guilty last month of sexually assaulting patients was found dead at the Rikers Island jail complex Monday even though his lawyer had called for him to be put on suicide watch just minutes after he was convicted.

The doctor, Ricardo Cruciani, a 68-year-old neurologist, was found early Monday morning sitting in a shower area of the jail with a sheet around his neck, according to documents obtained by The New York Times. Shortly afterward, medical staff arrived to attend to him. He died about an hour after he was discovered, the documents show.

Mr. Cruciani is the 12th person to have died this year either while being held in the city’s jails or shortly after being released. His death came about two weeks after a jury found him guilty on 12 counts of predatory sexual assault, sexual abuse, rape and other crimes, stemming from his treatment of six patients that he saw around 2012.

In a statement, the commissioner of the New York City Department of Correction, Louis A. Molina, said he was “deeply saddened to learn of the passing of this person in custody.”

“We will conduct a preliminary internal review to determine the circumstances surrounding his death,” he said in the statement, which did not identify Mr. Cruciani. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones.”

The Department of Correction did not immediately respond to questions on the circumstances surrounding the death or whether Mr. Cruciani had been placed on suicide watch, as his lawyer and the judge presiding over his trial had requested.

“Ricardo’s attorneys and family are shocked and saddened beyond belief to have learned of his violent death while in city custody this morning,” Mr. Cruciani’s lawyer, Frederick Sosinsky, said in a statement.

Mr. Sosinsky said that after his request in the courtroom, the judge had directed the Department of Correction to place Mr. Cruciani in protective custody and under suicide watch, during which he would have been supervised around the clock, even while using the bathroom.

“Neither of these conditions were, to our knowledge, ever complied with,” Mr. Sosinky said. He called for an investigation into the circumstances of Mr. Cruciani’s death, including why the Department of Correction failed to follow the court’s orders.

Mr. Cruciani was being held in a general population dormitory of the Eric M. Taylor Center that was understaffed, according to an official familiar with events who was granted anonymity to speak on the matter without authorization.

A second official said that Mr. Cruciani had entered the shower area at 4:23 a.m. and was found unresponsive at 5:35 a.m. by the officer overseeing the housing area. Officers are expected to tour the area every 30 minutes, but it is unclear whether that happened, the official said.

Mr. Cruciani’s death raises questions about why he was not under heightened supervision and draws new attention to problems at the Eric M. Taylor Center, which has become increasingly chaotic since it became a facility for processing new detainees last September, according to jail staff and advocates for prisoners.

Mr. Cruciani was scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 14, and could have been facing life in prison. He also faced federal charges in Manhattan and state charges for similar behavior in New Jersey.

During his trial in New York State Supreme Court, prosecutors said that Mr. Cruciani, who once had a reputation as a congenial and brilliant physician with a particular gift for treating chronic pain, had engaged in a pattern of untoward behavior with several women he treated.

At first, Mr. Cruciani would embrace his patients too tightly, or run his fingers through their hair, the prosecutors said. Eventually, his behavior would escalate and he would grope the women without permission, and force them to have intercourse or perform other sex acts. In lawsuits, some women accused him of having overprescribed pain medication that left them dependent on him.

Hillary Tullin, a former patient of Mr. Cruciani who said that he had assaulted her multiple times, said in an interview Monday that while she felt sorry for his children, she also felt “for all the victims who will never get a chance to confront him.”

“It finally dawned on him there was no way out,” she said. “The jurors believed what we said. It was real. He was going to jail for life.”

One of his other former patients, Terrie Phoenix, said: “I take comfort knowing he now faces another judge.”

Mr. Cruciani was first arrested in Pennsylvania in 2017, but after pleading guilty in a deal with Philadelphia prosecutors that required him to surrender his medical license, he was able to avoid jail time. The following year, he was criminally charged in Manhattan. His trial was delayed because of the pandemic, but began in late June of this year. After his conviction in July, he was sent to Rikers Island to await sentencing.

The jail complex, which is set to close by 2027, has been troubled for decades, but the coronavirus pandemic has worsened problems, as hundreds of correction officers have failed to show up for work. The lack of staffing has contributed to a cascade of issues, including the basic processing of new arrivals.

In the late summer of 2021, incarcerated people were held for weeks in intake cells, including in shower areas. After visiting the jail complex, then-Mayor Bill de Blasio said that one of his top priorities was speeding up the intake process. But that process appears to have slowed again — and a third of those who have died at city jails this year were being held at the Eric M. Taylor Center.

William K. Rashbaum, Roni Caryn Rabin and Troy Closson contributed reporting.

Ex-Mayor Rudy Giuliani Assaulted By Grocery Worker In Staten Island – Deadline

Controversial former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani was assaulted by a ShopRite worker Sunday while campaigning for his son’s gubernatorial bid in the city’s Staten Island borough. .

The 78-year-old Giuliani was slammed in the back by an unidentified ShopRite worker, according to the New York Post. The assault reportedly left him shaken, the report said.

“I was stunned,” eyewitness Rita Rugova-Johnson told The Post after the attack at the supermarket. “I was shoulder-to-shoulder with Rudy inside ShopRite,” Rugova-Johnson said. “We’re talking, and all of a sudden an employee came out of nowhere and open-handedly slapped him in the back and said, ‘Hey, what’s up, scumbag?’

The worker was arrested at the store. His charges and identity were not immediately available.

Giuliani was campaigning for his son, Andrew Giuliani, who is in a Republican primary race for governor.

A former attorney and adviser for President Donald Trump, Giuliani caused a stir earlier this year when he was unmasked as an exiting costumed contestant in Season 7 episode of Fox’s popular primetime series The Masked Singer. Judges Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke left the stage in protest of Giuliani’s appearance when his identity was revealed.

Giuliani was also subject to ridicule for his unwitting appearance in the 2020 film Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. He was lured into a hotel bedroom on the pretext of an interview by a conservative news outlet. The uncomfortable confrontation with actress Maria Bakalova appears to be heading toward a sexual encounter, but ends with Borat running into the room and shouting ““She’s 15. She’s too old for you.”

Psychologist testifies actor Johnny Depp assaulted ex-wife Amber Heard

Actor Amber Heard suffered post-traumatic stress disorder from violence she suffered at the hands of her ex-husband Johnny Depp, including multiple acts of sexual assault, a psychologist testified Tuesday.

The sexual assaults included being forced to perform oral sex and having Depp penetrate her with a liquor bottle, the psychologist, Dawn Hughes, told jurors at Depp’s libel trial against Heard. Depp accuses Heard of falsely claiming in a newspaper op-ed piece that she was a victim of domestic violence.

Hughes’ testimony contradicts that of a psychologist hired by Depp’s lawyers, who said Heard was faking her symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and suffered from borderline and histrionic personality disorders. Hughes disputed that Heard suffers from any personality disorder.

Hughes was the first witness to take the stand on Heard’s behalf after Depp’s lawyers rested their case Tuesday morning.

Hughes said there is corroboration of many of the instances of abuse, including apologies and admissions made by Depp to Heard and admissions he made to friends in text messages about his bad behavior when he drinks. In some cases, Heard told her therapists about the abuse contemporaneously, Hughes said.

Depp has said he never physically attacked Heard, and that she was the aggressor who routinely hit him and threw things at him through the course of their relationship.

Hughes, in her testimony, said Heard acknowledged that she did at times push and shove Depp, call him names and insult his parenting.

But Hughes said there’s a difference in the violence when a smaller person strikes at a larger person, and that Depp’s violence was intimidating and threatened her safety, but Heard’s violence did not have the same effect on Depp.

“That’s just physics; that’s just proportional force,” she said.

Much of the violence, Hughes said, stemmed from Depp’s obsessive jealousy. He insisted she avoid nude scenes, if she worked at all, and accused her of affairs with actors Billy Bob Thornton and James Franco. If she did work on a film, Depp would call the director and others on set and say he “had eyes” there who would report to him if she fraternized improperly, Hughes said.

And Heard, who identifies as bisexual according to treatment notes introduced at trial, also faced scrutiny in her interactions with women. Hughes said Depp on one occasion manually penetrated Heard in anger after witnessing Heard’s interactions with a woman.

“Amber got accused of women hitting her, and she got accused of men hitting on her,” Hughes said.

Heard blinked back tears, and her lips and chin quivered at times as Hughes described the abuse.

Hughes said she based her testimony on 29 hours of interviews with Heard, as well as interviews with her therapists and a review of court documents.

Earlier Tuesday, Depp’s lawyers rested their case, and a judge rejected a motion from Heard’s lawyers to dismiss the case. Heard’s lawyers argued that Depp had failed to make his case as a matter of law and that no reasonable jury could find in his favor.

But the judge, Penney Azcarate, said the standard for dismissing a case at this point in the trial is exceedingly high, and that the case should be allowed to move forward if Depp has provided even a “scintilla” of evidence backing up his claims.

Depp and his lead lawyer, Benjamin Chew, patted each other on the back after the judge ruled the case can proceed.

Chew argued that the jury has a wealth of evidence to conclude that Heard falsely accused Depp of abuse. In fact, he said, the evidence shows that “Ms. Heard physically abused him. She’s the abuser.”

Heard’s lawyer, J. Benjamin Rottenborn, said the evidence is clear over the last three weeks of testimony that Heard’s allegations of abuse are truthful.

“We haven’t gotten to put on our case yet,” he said. “This is all evidence that has come in while plaintiff controls the playing field.”

Depp is suing Heard for $50 million in Fairfax County Circuit Court after Heard wrote a December 2018 op-ed piece in The Washington Post describing herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse.” The article never mentions Depp by name, but Depp’s lawyers say he was defamed nevertheless because it’s a clear reference to abuse allegations Heard levied in 2016, in the midst of the couple’s divorce proceedings.

The judge on Tuesday did say she’s reserving judgment on whether the article’s headline in online editions should be part of the libel lawsuit because she said the evidence is unclear at this point whether Heard wrote the headline or is responsible for it. The online headline reads, “I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change.”

Hughes will be cross-examined Wednesday, and Heard is expected to take the stand Wednesday as well.

Tony Hudgell: Abused boy’s father in prison attack after inmates assaulted him with ‘cans of tuna’

An abusive father who tortured his own child so badly his legs had to be amputated could now be due compensation after he was battered by two fellow prison inmates.

Anthony Smith, 51, had 12 teeth knocked out after his attackers hit him with socks filled with cans of tuna during a two-hour savaging

Anthony Smith, 51, who is serving a 10-year sentence for child cruelty at HMP Swaleside in Kent, had 12 teeth knocked out after his attackers hit him with socks filled with cans of tuna during a two-hour savaging.

Smith, who abused little Tony Hudgell alongside his partner Jody Simpson, was tied up and assaulted with the homemade weapons by Michael Stewart, 31, and Nathan Odgers, 36.

The pair struck Smith repeatedly with their improvised weapons and tied him to his cell bed after he collected his breakfast.

Child abuser Smith could be in line for a taxpayer-funded payout as he was the victim of an attack while a prisoner. He could claim for both physical injuries and mental trauma inflicted.

During the attack the inmates shouted that Smith should lose his legs and threatened to ‘chop off his legs’ – a reference to the appalling violence he inflicted on his son.

Tony was just four months old when he was subjected to vile abuse at the couple’s flat in Maidstone, Kent, in 2014.

The youngster, now seven, lost both legs as a result of the injuries and his campaigning with adopted mother Paula led to a recent law change, dubbed Tony’s Law, could see abusers jailed for life.

Tony, pictured above in 2020, was just four months old when he was subjected to vile abuse at the couple’s flat in Maidstone, Kent

The youngester, now seven, lost both legs as a result of the injuries and his campaigning with adopted mother Paula led to a recent law change, dubbed Tony’s Law, could see abusers jailed for life

Stewart and Odgers reportedly told Smith to go along with their hostage plan staged in protest at being at the notorious category B jail dubbed ‘Stabside’ in the hope of being moved jails.

Both defendants later claimed Smith volunteered but he denied this.

A wardrobe was pushed across the door and the observation panel blocked with toilet paper as the pair demanded to speak to a governor.

Initially Stewart and Odgers did not know of Smith’s notorious crimes until another inmate shouted out who he was.

Stewart – who was serving 10 years for serious violence – and Nathan Odgers – who is serving 10-and-a-half years for a sting of armed robberies – then barricaded themselves in after tying Smith to the bed.

A prisoner was heard to shout: ‘He should have his legs chopped off.’

Smith was left needing hospital treatment for multiple teeth fractures and bruising after the brutal assault left the tuna tins ‘heavily dented’.

The two-hour ordeal happened in August 2018 – just six months after Smith and Simpson were jailed over their abuse – but it would take another 19 months before the CPS would authorise charges.

A judge at Maidstone Crown Court today said the delay was ‘extraordinary and unconscionable’ and cut their sentences by a year.

Stewart, who had links to Bedford, was given an extended jail term of eight years and five months and father-of-four Odgers, from Hastings, East Sussex, received an extended sentence of nine years and six months.

Tony was admitted to the Evelina London Children’s in Southwark, south east London, in 2015

In December 2021 Tony met with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge during their festive carol concert at Westminster Abbey

Both men admitted charges of false imprisonment and assault causing actual bodily harm.

Judge Jeremy Donne QC told the court Smith needed 12 teeth replaced – although the pair were not responsible for all of the injuries.

He said he accepted the motive for the attack was not revenge but a desire to move to a different jail.

He ordered Stewart to serve an immediate jail term of three years and eight months and Odgers four years and six months.

The judge then ruled the two will also have to serve another five years on licence when they are released after serving two-thirds of the jail terms.

Little Tony’s suffering at the hands of his parents caused national outrage as his injuries were so horrific, including a hip dislocation and head trauma, the youngster had to have surgery to amputate both legs at the knee.

He has since learnt to walk on prosthetic legs and during lockdown raised over £1.2 million for the NHS and the hospital that saved his life.
