Startups spring from ashes of Big Tech purge

  • Mass tech layoffs spawn new wave of startups
  • Early-stage VC funding at around record levels
  • Echoes of dotcom crash that fueled Facebook, others

Jan 3 (Reuters) – Nic Szerman lost his job at Meta Platforms (META.O) in November, just two months after joining full-time, falling victim to a sweeping 13% reduction of its workforce as the advertising market cratered.

Days later he was back working, seeking investment for his own company Nulink, a blockchain-based payment company, and sent pitches to startup accelerator Y Combinator and Andreessen Horowitz’s cryptocurrency fund.

“As counterintuitive as it may sound, this layoff left me in a really good position,” the 24-year-old said. “Because I don’t have to pay back the sign-on bonus, I get four months of pay, and now I have time to focus on my own project.”

Szerman is part of a wave of would-be entrepreneurs who are emerging from the ashes of the mass job losses seen in Silicon Valley in the second half of 2022, according to venture capitalists.

U.S. tech giants including Meta, Microsoft (MSFT.O), Twitter and Snap (SNAP.N) have purged more than 150,000 staff, according to Layoff.fyi, which tracks technology job losses.

While overall venture capital (VC) financing fell 33% globally to about $483 billion in 2022, early-stage funding was robust, with $37.4 billion raised in so-called angel or seed rounds, in line with the record level seen in 2021, according to data from research firm PitchBook.

Day One Ventures, an early stage venture fund in San Francisco, launched a new initiative in November to fund startups founded by people who had been laid off from their tech jobs, touting the slogan “Funded, not Fired”.

The program aims to cut 20 checks for $100,000 by the end of 2022. Day One said it had received over 1,000 applications, most of them from people who were cut loose by Meta, Stripe and Twitter.

“We’re investing $2 million in 20 companies – if we just find one unicorn it almost returns the fund, which I think is a really unique opportunity for us as fund managers,” said Masha Bucher, co-founder at Day One Ventures.

“Looking at the last economic cycle, companies like Stripe, Airbnb, Dropbox have been created in crisis.”

HOT: GAMING AND AI

Also in November, multi-stage fund Index Ventures, which has bankrolled Facebook, Etsy and Skype, launched its second Origins fund, which will invest $300 million in early-stage startups.

Silicon Valley investor U.S. Venture Partners and Austrian VC firm Speedinvest have meanwhile earmarked a similar amount for newly founded companies.

Investors highlighted gaming and artificial intelligence among hot areas of interest.

“With advances in game design, new innovations like cloud gaming, and the emergence of social networking in this sphere, gaming has really transcended into mainstream culture,” said Sofia Dolfe, partner at Index Ventures.

“In every period of economic uncertainty, there is opportunity – to reset, re-prioritize and re-focus energy and resources.”

DOTCOM BUBBLE 2.0

Szerman said his project was rejected by Y Combinator, while he hasn’t heard back from Andreessen Horowitz yet, though he added that other early-stage venture capitalists had expressed interest.

“I told the investors we’ll chat in two or three months,” he added. “I’ll focus on scaling the system now.”

Some investors compared the 2022 downturn to the dotcom crash of the early 2000s, when dozens of overvalued startups went bust, flooding the market with talent and helping to spark a wave of new companies such as Facebook and YouTube.

“Many great companies have been created in relatively dark times,” said Harry Nelis, partner at investment firm Accel, who sees a new generation of risk takers emerge among the swathe of people left unemployed.

Some industry players say former Big Tech employees are uniquely placed to start their own companies, having seen first-hand how some of the biggest firms in the world operate, and enjoying ongoing access to their network of highly skilled colleagues.

One former Googler has sought to help others like him looking for life after technology giants. In 2015, Christopher Fong, who spent almost a decade working for the tech titan in California, launched Xoogler, a project designed to help former employees hoping to start their own companies. Since then, the group’s membership has since swelled to more than 11,000.

Fong told Reuters that experience in Big Tech firm gave founders a “strong brand that can be leveraged to meet investors, potential customers, and recruit team members”.

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Late “Star Trek” actress Nichelle Nichols’ ashes will boldly go where few have gone before when they are launched into space aboard a historic Enterprise Flight later this year.

Nichols, who was known for playing the iconic Lieutenant Nyota Uhura on all three seasons of the original show from 1966-1969, died on July 31. She was 89.

Launching later this year on board United Launch Alliance’s aptly named Vulcan rocket, Nichols will live long and prosper among the stars through Celestis Inc., the leader in memorial spaceflights.

Nichols’ remains will be joining late “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry, who died in 1991, and his deceased wife and “First Lady of ‘Star Trek’” Majel Barrett Roddenberry, who passed in 2008.

The cremated remains of late “Star Trek” actor James Doohan, who played Montgomery “Scotty” Scott and died in 2005, and visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull, who died in February, will also be included in the mission to mark the unique “Star Trek” reunion flight.

The flight is scheduled to travel between 150-300 million kilometers into deep space and beyond the Earth-Moon system.

On the mission, Nichols will also be joined by her son, Kyle Johnson, who will submit his DNA to allow him to take this journey with his mother.

“My only regret is that I cannot share this eternal tribute standing beside my mother at the launch,” Johnson said.

Fans are encouraged to submit their names and tributes to Nichols as part of a worldwide public memorial page at enterprise-flight.com, which can then be digitized and launched with her on the journey.

Through Celestis, 200 flight capsules containing cremated remains, messages and DNA samples from clients worldwide will also join the endless interplanetary space journey.

Nichols broke barriers for Black women in Hollywood and was an advocate for space flight programs as NASA’s recruiter-in-chief.

“Nichelle Nichols was a trailblazing actress, advocate, and dear friend to NASA. At a time when black women were seldom seen on screen, Nichelle’s portrayal as Nyota Uhura on Star Trek held a mirror up to America that strengthened civil rights. Nichelle’s advocacy transcended television and transformed NASA,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said in a release.

“After Apollo 11, Nichelle made it her mission to inspire women and people of color to join this agency, change the face of STEM and explore the cosmos. Nichelle’s mission is NASA’s mission. Today, as we work to send the first woman and first person of color to the Moon under Artemis, NASA is guided by the legacy of Nichelle Nichols.”

President Joe Biden released a statement shortly after her death last month, praising the actress for shattering stereotypes during a pivotal time in the Civil Rights movement.

“In Nichelle Nichols, our nation has lost a trailblazer of stage and screen who redefined what is possible for Black Americans and women,” he said.

He said she was from a “working-class family from Illinois” and that she honed her skills as an actor and singer in Chicago before she toured the country with Duke Ellington and gave “life to the words of James Baldwin.”

“During the height of the Civil Rights Movement, she shattered stereotypes to become the first Black woman to act in a major role on a primetime television show with her groundbreaking portrayal of Lt. Uhura in the original Star Trek,” Biden said. “With a defining dignity and authority, she helped tell a central story that reimagined scientific pursuits and discoveries. And she continued this legacy by going on to work with NASA to empower generations of Americans from every background to reach for the stars and beyond.”

Biden continued: “Our nation is forever indebted to inspiring artists like Nichelle Nichols, who show us a future where unity, dignity, and respect are cornerstones of every society.”

She earned accolades for breaking stereotypes for Black actresses, with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. personally encouraging her to stay with the TV series when she expressed doubts about continuing working on the program. She met him at a civil rights gathering in 1967, at a point when she had decided not to return for the show’s second season.

“He said, ‘You cannot do that,'” Nichols recalled. “You’ve changed the face of television forever, and therefore, you’ve changed the minds of people,” she said the civil rights leader told her during a meeting.

During the third season of “Star Trek,” Nichols and another series star, William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk, made TV history when they shared an interracial kiss.

She will not be alone on the mission as ashes and DNA from other departed Star Trek pioneers will join her including James Doohan (Scotty), Majel Barrett Roddenberry (Nurse Chapel), the TV series creator Gene Roddenberry, and visual-effects wiz Douglas Trumbull.

United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan Centaur mission is set to deliver a robotic lunar lander no earlier than December in order to scout for NASA’s future Artemis flights to the moon and will deliver the ashes and DNA samples deeper into the solar system after.

Her son Kyle Johnson is fully behind the project as he said: ‘I’m sure she would have much preferred to go on the shuttle but this is a pretty close second.’

The memorial mission is being organized by Houston-based company Celestis which is the first company to have successfully conducted memorial space flight missions.

Nichols passed away from natural causes on July 30 at the age of 89, as her son confirmed the news the next day.

Star Trek co-star William Shatner hailed his late costar Nichelle Nichols as a ‘beautiful woman’ whose iconic character Lieutenant Uhura helped ‘refine social issues’ across the globe.

Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk on the show, says he will ‘certainly miss’ his longtime friend.

The pair shared an iconic on-screen kiss in 1968, during season three of the original series, that has since been regarded as one of the first interracial kisses aired on TV.

The kiss occurred only one year after the Supreme Court legalized interracial marriage and, according to TV critics, ‘suggested that there was a future where these issues were not such a big deal.’

George Takei, who portrayed Hikaru Sulu across the original Star Trek series and films, also paid tribute to Nichols, calling her both ‘trailblazing’ and ‘incomparable.’

Star Trek actor William Shatner also paid tribute to the star praising her for ‘redefining social issues both here in the US & throughout the world’

‘I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Nichelle,’ Shatner tweeted Sunday.

‘She was a beautiful woman and played an admirable character that did so much for redefining social issues both here in the US & throughout the world.’

‘I will certainly miss her. Sending my love and condolences to her family.’

The two actors, along with the show, are credited with making a public statement about racism and civil rights with their 1968 on-screen kiss during the season three episode titled Plato’s Stepchildren.

Although it was not romantic in nature – as aliens forced the pair to lock lips – the kiss would help change attitudes about what was allowed to shown on television.

Robert Thompson, a television and pop culture professor at Syracuse University, told NBC News in 2018, 50 years after the kiss debuted, that the kiss aired with almost no comment at the time.

‘It neither got the backlash one might have expected nor did it open the doors for lots more shows to do this,’ he said, but noting it did ultimately contribute to change.

‘The shot heard around the world started the American Revolution. The kiss heard around the world eventually did … but not immediately,’ he explained.

Nichols became one of the nation’s first Black women to star in a primetime show after being cast in 1966 as Nyota Uhura on Star Trek.

Like Shatner, costar Takei noted how her work on the show was groundbreaking.

‘I shall have more to say about the trailblazing, incomparable Nichelle Nichols, who shared the bridge with us as Lt. Uhura of the USS Enterprise, and who passed today at age 89,’ Takei wrote.

‘For today, my heart is heavy, my eyes shining like the stars you now rest among, my dearest friend.’

Actress Celia Rose Gooding credited Nichols for ‘making room for so many of us.’

‘She was the reminder that not only can we reach the stars, but our influence is essential to their survival. Forget shaking the table, she built it!’ Gooding tweeted.

Star Trek: Voyager star Kate Mulgrew called Nichols a ‘trailblazer who navigated a very challenging trail with grit, grace and a gorgeous fire we are not likely to see again.’

Tributes to Nichols came flooding in after her son, Kyle Johnson, announced his mother’s death on her official Facebook page.

‘I regret to inform you that a great light in the firmament no longer shines for us as it has for so many years,’ Johnson posted Sunday.

‘Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration.

‘Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all.

‘I, and the rest of our family, would appreciate your patience and forbearance as we grieve her loss until we can recover sufficiently to speak further. Her services will be for family members and the closest of her friends and we request that her and our privacy be respected.’

Kyle signed off on the tribute with the iconic Star Trek slogan, ‘Live long and prosper.’

Nichols became one of the nation’s first Black women to star in a primetime show after being cast in 1966 as Nyota Uhura on Star Trek

Nichols entered showbusiness at age 16 and sang with legendary Duke Ellington before later switching to acting.

Her break-the-mold tendencies expanded beyond the screen and into space science. She volunteered with NASA from 1977 to 2015 to promote diversity in the recruiting of women and minority astronauts. The initiative led to the recruitment of Dr. Sally Ride, the nation’s first women astronaut.

As an actress, Nichols played a key role in inspiring Black children to enter showbusiness, and reportedly earned the praise of Martin Luther King Jr. Following her 70-episode run with the Star Trek series, she continued to star in box office sequels and lesser-known films.

Nichols’ contribution to the film industry earned her a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1992. She also received a life career award from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films in 2016, becoming the first woman to be bestowed with the honor.

In 2018, Nichols’ son Kyle Johnson announced that she had been diagnosed with dementia, which spurred a conservatorship battle between him, her former manager Gilbert Bell and her friend Angelique Fawcette.

According to an August 2021 piece in the Los Angeles Times, Johnson filed for a conservatorship saying that Bell had lived in a guest home in Nichols’ Woodland Hills, California home for nearly 10 years, and in 2017, had transferred ownership of the home into his name as as power of attorney, an arrangement which was subsequently overturned.

Fawcette had also applied to become the conservator saying that Nichols would be best served spending her final years at her Southern California home, as she had lived in New Mexico with Johnson and his wife. According to property records, the home was sold last year to a construction company for $2.22 million.

Green Bay Packers’ Aaron Jones loses necklace containing late father’s ashes during 4-TD performance

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Aaron Jones had something special planned for his first game at Lambeau Field since his father’s death in April.

The Green Bay Packers running back came out for Monday night’s home opener against the Detroit Lions wearing a necklace that contained Alvin Jones Sr.’s ashes in a football-shaped medallion.

Along the way to his four-touchdown game in the Packers’ 35-17 victory, Jones lost the necklace. He thinks it came off during his second-quarter touchdown catch — the second of three receiving touchdowns to go along with a rushing score — and despite a thorough search after the game, it has not been found.

“If there was any place to lose it, that’s where my dad would’ve wanted me to lose it,” Jones said, referring to the end zone. “So I know he’s smiling.”

Jones always made a point to find his father in the stands before the game. On Monday, there were 15 family members in the stands, including Jones’ mother and his brother, Alvin Jr. (a linebacker who spent time with the Packers during the offseason on an extended tryout).

“I’m used to turning around and seeing my dad in the stands and just smiling to know everything is OK,” Aaron Jones said. “So when I was seeing them, I was good.”

Alvin Jones Sr. died of COVID-19 complications at age 56. When asked what he would’ve said to his father after a game like Monday’s, Aaron Jones replied: “Just go home and tell him: I did it, Dad.”
