Angelina Jolie to Play Maria Callas in New Biopic from Pablo Larrain – The Hollywood Reporter

Jackie and Spencer director Pablo Larraín looks set to continue to focus his lens on some of the most famous women in modern history, and has found his next subject in soprano Maria Callas. The Chilean director has also tapped another, equally well-known, figure to play his lead in Angelina Jolie.

Maria, based on true accounts, will reportedly relive and reimagine the “tumultuous, beautiful and tragic story” of the life of one of the world’s greatest opera singers during her final days in 1970s Paris. The hugely influential, America-born Greek icon — once described as “the Bible of opera” by Leonard Bernstein — is also linked to another of Larraín’s films, having famously had a love affair with Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis, who later married Jackie Kennedy.

Written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, who reunites with Larraín following the director’s previous feature, Spencer, the film is produced by Juan de Dios Larraín for Fabula Pictures; Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment Pictures, a Fremantle Company; and Jonas Dornbach for Komlizen Film.

“I take very seriously the responsibility to Maria’s life and legacy. I will give all I can to meet the challenge,” said Jolie. “Pablo Larraín is a director I have long admired. To be allowed the chance to tell more of Maria’s story with him, and with a script by Steven Knight, is a dream.”

Added Larraín: “Having the chance to combine my two most deep and personal passions, cinema and opera, has been a long-awaited dream. To do this with Angelina, a supremely brave and curious artist, is a fascinating opportunity. A true gift.”

Jolie is currently in postproduction on her fifth film as a director, Without Blood, the first under a new three-year deal she signed with Fremantle. She is repped by WME and attorneys Robert Offer and Lindsey Strasberg at Sloane Offer.

Brad Pitt recalls taking up sculpting following bitter split from Angelina Jolie

Brad Pitt has recounted taking up sculpting in the aftermath of his contentious split from Angelina Jolie.

The actor, 58, who recently debuted his first-ever collection of sculpture at an art gallery in Finland, recalled bonding with artist Thomas Houseago back in 2016 over their ‘mutual misery’, several months after officially splitting from Angelina.

The duo were both grappling with heavy issues at the time, but Brad told the Financial Times their ‘mutual misery’ ultimately turned into a ‘flame of joy.’

‘Out of this misery came a flame of joy in my life’: Brad Pitt has recounted taking up sculpting in the aftermath of his contentious split from Angelina Jolie (pictured with Nick Cave, left, and Thomas Houseago, centre)

‘Our mutual misery became comic,’ Pitt, who met Houseago at a New Year’s Eve party in 2016, told the publication. ‘And out of this misery came a flame of joy in my life. I always wanted to be a sculptor; I’d always wanted to try it.’

After their meeting, Pitt found himself hanging out at Houseago’s art studio, where he was able to explore his new passion for artwork.

Pitt has joined forces with singer Nick Cave and Houseago for their joint exhibition, WE, which debuted last month at the Sara Hilden Art Museum in Finland.

‘We were thrown together in trauma and catastrophe,’ Houseago told the site, referring to their shared past struggles. Both Houseago and Pitt have grappled with alcohol in the past, while Cave suffered from a heroin addiction in the 1980s and also lost two of his sons in the past decade. Pitt, of course, is also still in the throes of an ugly legal battle with ex Angelina.

Speaking to Finnish broadcaster Yle last month at the opening, Brad said: ‘For Nick and I this is a new world and our first entry. It just feels right.

‘To me it’s about self-reflection. It’s about where I have gotten it wrong in my relationships, where have I misstepped, where am I complicit.

Sculpture: The Once Upon A Time in Hollywood star, who is largely ‘self-taught’, had nine entries in the exhibit

‘For me, it was born out of ownership of what I call a radical inventory of self, getting really brutally honest with me and taking account of those I may have hurt, moments I have just gotten wrong.’

Pitt did not elaborate on who he ‘may have hurt’, but his most noteable past relationships were his marriages to Angelina and Jennifer Aniston.

The actor was married to Aniston from 2000 to 2005 and then entered into a relationship with Jolie the same year.

Exhibit: The film star, 58, flew to the city of Tampere last month for his first-ever public exhibition at the Sara Hilden Art Museum where he was joined by singer Nick Cave and artist Thomas Houseago who also had works in the exhibit

The Mr. & Mrs. Smith co-stars married in 2014 and divorced in 2019 and share six children together; Maddox, 21, Pax, 18, Zahara, 17, Shiloh, 16, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 14.

The Once Upon A Time in Hollywood star, who is largely ‘self-taught’, had nine entries in the exhibit.

The original pieces included several under the umbrella title of ‘Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound to the House’ consisting of trapped bullets crystalized in platinum silicon.

Larger pieces included a coffin-sized bronzed box with hands, feet and faces breaking through in various angles, and a plaster wall sculpture called ‘Aiming At You I Saw Me But It Was Too Late This Time.’

No word on how much the various pieces are going for or if any has been sold.

The actor is scheduled to re-team with his Ocean’s 13 buddy George Clooney, 61 for the as yet Untitled George Clooney/Brad Pitt/Jon Watts project described on IMDB.com as a story of ‘two lone wolf fixers who are assigned to the same job.’

Brad Pitt responds to Angelina Jolie’s claim he ‘choked’ one of their children

Brad Pitt has responded to Angelina Jolie’s allegations that he “choked” one of their children.

On Tuesday (4 October), as part of an ongoing legal battle over the French winery the former couple once owned, Jolie filed a cross-complaint that contained new allegations of abuse against the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actor.

In the court filings, which were obtained by The New York Times, Jolie’s lawyers claimed the alleged altercation occurred onboard a private jet in 2016, where Jolie, 47, previously claimed the pair had a fight that led to their divorce.

The filings allege that Pitt “choked one of the children and struck another in the face” and “grabbed Jolie by the head and shook her.” Pitt, 58, is also accused of “pouring beer on Jolie and “beer and red wine on the children”.

In a new statement sent to CNN, Pitt’s representatives have refuted these claims, calling them “completely untrue”. The Independent has contacted Pitt for additional comment.

The documents also state that Jolie told FBI officials that Pitt “grabbed her by her head”, “shook her:, “pushed her into the bathroom wall”, and repeatedly punched the ceiling of the plane.

The records obtained by Rolling Stone and other outlets say the outburst occurred 90 minutes into the flight between France and Los Angeles on 14 September 2016.

In her statement, Jolie alleged that Pitt’s actions frightened their six children, who ranged from eight to 15 at the time.

The Maleficent star also claimed that Pitt consumed multiple alcoholic beverages during the flight. When the plane landed, she said it had sustained $25,000 (£22,000) worth of damage from spilt red wine.

No charges were filed following an investigation into the incident “due to several factors”, Rolling Stone reported.

In 2016, Pitt denied allegations he was abusive towards one of his children on the private jet.

Brad Pitt’s rep disputes details in Angelina Jolie’s latest allegations about 2016 airplane incident

CNN
 —

A countersuit filed Tuesday by actress Angelina Jolie against her ex-husband Brad Pitt includes more information about an alleged physical altercation between the former couple that took place on a plane in 2016.

In a statement to CNN, a representative for Pitt called the latest allegations “completely untrue.”

Jolie and Pitt are battling over Jolie’s sale of her stake in their joint French winery, Chateau Miraval. Jolie sold her half of the winery in 2021 to Tenute del Mondo, a subsidiary of Stoli Group, controlled by Russian oligarch Yuri Shefler.

Pitt sued Jolie in February, claiming that he and Jolie had an agreement that neither would sell without the other’s consent.

Jolie claims in her countersuit that there was never any such agreement and that she sold her portion of the winery in an effort to have “financial independence” from Pitt and to “have some form of peace and closure to this deeply painful and traumatic chapter of her and their children’s lives.”

In the court documents, obtained by CNN, Jolie also shares more details about an alleged incident on a private plane on September 14, 2016, five days before she filed for divorce.

In a section of Jolie’s counterclaim titled “Why Jolie separated from Pitt,” the document alleges that, before arriving to the airport, Pitt got into an argument with one of their six children, who at the time were between the ages of 8 and 15. The filing goes on to allege that on the plane Jolie asked Pitt “what was wrong?” and that Pitt went on to verbally attack her and then an hour and a half later “pulled” her into the bathroom, “grabbed Jolie by the head and shook her, and then grabbed her shoulders and shook her again before pushing her into the bathroom wall.”

The claim also alleges, “Pitt choked one of the children and struck another in the face. Some of the children pleaded with Pitt to stop. They were all frightened. Many were crying.”

In a statement provided to CNN on Tuesday, a representative for Pitt said: “(Jolie’s) story continues to evolve each time she tells it with new, unsubstantiated claims. Brad has accepted responsibility for what he did but will not for things he didn’t do. These new allegations are completely untrue.”

CNN previously reported some of these details from a heavily redacted FBI report in August.

Pitt was not arrested or charged in connection with the incident after the FBI completed an investigation in 2016.

“In response to allegations made following a flight within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States which landed in Los Angeles carrying Mr. Brad Pitt and his children, the FBI has conducted a review of the circumstances and will not pursue further investigation. No charges have been filed in this matter,” FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said in a statement to CNN at the time.

“All parties have had this information for nearly six years and was used in previous legal proceedings. There is nothing new here and serves no purpose other than being a media stunt meant to inflict pain,” a source close to Pitt said of the August report.

CNN has reached out to representatives for Jolie regarding the most recent court filing, which states that during the plane incident, Pitt allegedly “lunged at his own child and Jolie grabbed him from behind to stop him. To get Jolie off his back, Pitt threw himself backwards into the airplane’s seats injuring Jolie’s back and elbow.”

The court documents also claim that the children “rushed in and all bravely tried to protect each other” and that Jolie and the children “sat still and silent under blankets. Nobody dared to go to the bathroom.”

For this reason, the legal documents state, Jolie and her six children have not been able to return to Chateau Miraval due to the “pain Pitt inflicted on the family that day.”

Many of the details in Jolie’s countersuit echo those made in a countersuit filed last month by Nouvel LLC, Jolie’s former company.

In his earlier claim, Pitt had alleged that Jolie “did nothing to drive (the) growth” of the business, which he turned into a “multimillion dollar international success story.”

In its countersuit, Nouvel disputed this, saying “Pitt refused to grant Jolie or Nouvel equal access to Chateau Miraval’s records or an equal voice over management,” effectively “holding the most significant part of her net worth hostage.”

Jolie’s countersuit adds that “like other couples,” the two “divided their responsibilities and generally split costs.”

“Jolie made her career as an actor and director secondary to her primary responsibility of raising the children. She also oversaw the day-to-day running of the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, to which she not only contributed substantial amounts of time but also substantial amounts of cash (over twice what Pitt contributed),” the document states. “Pitt continued with his Hollywood career and took primary responsibility for renovating the chateau.”

She also claims that she repeatedly tried to sell her stake in the winery to Pitt, as recently as last year and that Pitt was going to buy her portion for $54.5 million in February but that Pitt “demanded” she sign a broad non-disparagement clause “that would prohibit Jolie from discussing outside of court any of Pitt’s personal conduct toward her or the family,” inherently including the allegations of abuse from the 2016 incident.

Jolie claims that she refused to sign this clause and called it “an abusive and controlling deal-breaker.”

The counterclaim asks the court to declare Jolie’s sale of her stake final so that the actress can “move on from the winery and chateau.”

Angelina Jolie’s Court Filing Claims Brad Pitt Abuse Toward Her & Kids – SheKnows

It’s hard to believe that six years after Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s split, their divorce is still playing out in court. While they have been officially declared single, their child custody case and the battle over their French winery, Chateau Miraval, continue to plague them. The latest details emerging from their battle give fans an insider view of how horrific the 2016 plane ride that led to their split actually was.

Jolie filed a cross-complaint on Tuesday against her ex as a part of their winery case with her lawyers alleging that Pitt asked her to sign “a nondisclosure agreement that would have contractually prohibited her from speaking outside of court about Pitt’s physical and emotional abuse of her and their children” before he would agree to buy her shares of the vineyard, according to documents obtained by The New York Times. While that seems unfair, it’s the new information that she released with this filing that is absolutely jaw-dropping and horrific.

While the details about Pitt pouring beer on Jolie emerged as a part of her case against the FBI, it’s the additional parts that add more context to the scary altercation. The 47-year-old mother of six claims that “Pitt choked one of the children and struck another in the face” and also “grabbed Jolie by the head and shook her.” This is the first time it has been publicly revealed that Pitt may have struck one or more of their children on that plane in 2016. While the FBI agent on the case recommended that charges be filed against Pitt for domestic violence, it was the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles who declined to pursue the case.

Jolie eventually sold her shares of Chateau Miraval to a Russian oligarch, which did not please Pitt very much. That’s why they are in this legal battle and both sides are using every tactic they have to win the case. The disagreement may be about business, but it’s the personal details that are showing the marriage was not as glamorous as their red-carpet status led fans to believe.
