These AMD board partners have not released a Radeon RX 7900 GPU yet

Vastarmor and Dataland have still not shown their Radeon RX 7900 GPUs

MSI is not the only company sluggish to announce Radeon RX 7000 cards.

Vastarmor Radeon RX 6750XT Alloy

Dataland and Vastarmor, two Chinese graphics card makers have not released or even announced Radeon RX 7900 XT or RX 7900 XTX GPUs. That’s a month after these SKUs were introduced by AMD. Interestingly, both companies were part of the Radeon RX 6000 and RX 6×50 launches on day one.

Dataland, better known for its X-Serial GPU series, is commonly seen on ecommerce sites in China. These are heavily customized designs with some extra factory overclocking. The lack of Radeon RX 7900 GPU from Dataland means that the company did not even participate in making their own ‘semi-custom’ design with AMD MBA (Made by AMD) reference cooling but their own packaging. This was the case with last-gen GPUs:

Dataland Radeon RX 6800/6750XT

Vastarmor is a new GPU company that had only appeared 2 years ago. The company was heavily promoted by AMD at launch, immediately shown alongside big brands such as ASUS, MSI or Gigabyte. A month after Radeon RX 7900 launch, the RX 7900 GPUs from Vastarmor are nowhere to be seen. That’s despite AMD claiming otherwise not that old ago:

AMD Radeon RX 7900 Series graphics cards are expected to be available from AMD.com beginning December 13, 2022, and from leading board partners including ASRock, ASUS, Biostar, Gigabyte, MSI, PowerColor, Sapphire, Vastarmor, XFX and Yeston beginning mid-December. The AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX has an SEP of $999 USD, while the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT has an SEP of $899 USD.

— AMD PR, 11/03/2022

It should be noted that Vastarmor was even part of the Radeon RX 6950 XT launch, so high-end GPU is not a new concept for this company either.

Hopefully, we will hear more from both GPU makers on their plans for Radeon 7000 series. Both companies might simply be waiting for AMD to announce more affordable RDNA3 GPUs, which is unfortunately still not the case.

AMD Revealed 31 Vulnerabilities Within Its Processor Lines, Ryzen & EPYC CPUs Included

AMD revealed in the most recent January update that thirty-one new vulnerabilities were found in its processors, covering Ryzen and EPYC CPUs.

AMD hit with 31 new vulnerabilities to start 2023, affecting Ryzen & EPYC CPU lines

The company has created numerous mitigations to alleviate the exposed processors and has also disclosed a report from the company in cooperation with teams from three top companies — Apple, Google, and Oracle. The company also announced several AGESA variants listed in the update (AGESA code is found when building the system’s BIOS and UEFI code).

Due to the vulnerability’s nature, the AGESA changes have been delivered to OEMs, and any patching will depend on each vendor to release it as soon as possible. It would be wise for consumers to visit the vendor’s official website to find out if there is a new update waiting for download rather than waiting for the company to roll it out later.

AMD Processors vulnerable to this new attack include Ryzen models for desktops, HEDT, Pro, and mobile CPU series. There is a single vulnerability labeled as “high severity,” while two others are less extreme but still important to patch. All exposures are attacked through the BIOS and ASP bootloader (also known as the AMD Secure Processor bootloader).

AMD CPU series that are vulnerable are:

  • Ryzen 2000 (Pinnacle Ridge) series processors
  • Ryzen 2000 APUs
  • Ryzen 5000 APUs
  • AMD Threadripper 2000 HEDT and Pro server processor series
  • AMD Threadripper 3000 HEDT and Pro server processor series
  • Ryzen 2000 series mobile processors
  • Ryzen 3000 series mobile processors
  • Ryzen 5000 series mobile processors
  • Ryzen 6000 series mobile processors
  • Athlon 3000 series mobile processors

Twenty-eight AMD vulnerabilities have been discovered affecting EPYC processors, with four models labeled with a “high severity” by the company. The three of high severity can have arbitrary code that can be executed through attack vectors in numerous areas. Also, one of the three listed has an additional exploit that permits writing data to specific sections leading to data loss. Other research teams found another fifteen vulnerabilities with lower severity and nine with minor severity.

Because of the large number of affected processors exploited, the company chose to disclose this recent vulnerability list that would typically be published in May and November each year and make sure that mitigations were prepared for release. Other vulnerabilities within AMD products include a variant of Hertzbleed, another that acts similarly to the Meltdown exploit, and one called “Take A Way.”

CVE Severity CVE Description
CVE‑2021‑26316 High Failure to validate the communication buffer and communication service in the BIOS may allow an attacker to tamper with the buffer resulting in potential SMM (System Management Mode) arbitrary code execution.
CVE‑2021‑26346 Medium Failure to validate the integer operand in ASP (AMD Secure Processor) bootloader may allow an attacker to introduce an integer overflow in the L2 directory table in SPI flash resulting in a potential denial of service.
CVE‑2021‑46795 Low A TOCTOU (time-of-check to time-of-use) vulnerability exists where an attacker may use a compromised BIOS to cause the TEE OS to read memory out of bounds that could potentially result in a denial of service.

Two Separate Eye Diseases May Contribute to Common Blinding Eye Condition AMD

Summary: Study demonstrates two different types of deposits in the retina that appear to contribute to age-related macular degeneration.

Source: Mount Sinai Hospital

Two separate eye diseases may contribute to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of blindness in the United States, according to a new study from New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai.

The research, published January 9 in Eye is the first to demonstrate that two different types of deposits in the retina may contribute to early AMD, which can progress to advanced AMD and blindness.

These two diseases could be diagnosed, studied, and treated separately with appropriate early intervention to prevent vision loss and other complications.

Age-related macular degeneration results from damage to the central area of the retina called the macula, which is responsible for reading and driving vision for driving Nearly 20 million Americans age 40 and older are living with some form of AMD, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

AMD in its early form is currently considered to be a single disease with cholesterol-containing deposits. These deposits are known as drusen and subretinal drusenoid deposits (SDDs).

Early AMD may progress to blindness in two advanced forms, commonly called wet and dry AMD. The advanced dry form is also called geographic atrophy (GA) by eye specialists.

“An amazing fact is that the retina can generate a fluorescent light, similar to that of a light fixture, but a million times dimmer.

“For the first time, we were able to measure this dim light, called autofluorescence (AF), with ultra-sensitive detectors to study advanced AMD.

“We found it was consistently twice as bright in the patients with SDDs as those with drusen when they reached advanced AMD, and came from a unique diseased layer,” explains lead author R. Theodore Smith, MD, Ph.D., Professor of Ophthalmology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

“Combined with our prior research, this provides conclusive evidence that two different disease processes in AMD are taking place, one with darker fluorescence and drusen, and one with brighter fluorescence and SDDs, and they need to be treated differently.”

Drusen formation can be slowed by appropriate vitamin supplements to prevent vision loss. Currently, there is no known treatment for SDDs, and they pose a greater threat of advanced AMD.

However, in a recent previous study, Dr. Smith and a team of Mount Sinai researchers found that patients with SDDs are likely to have heart damage from heart failure and heart attacks, or advanced heart valve disease, or strokes associated with carotid artery disease.

“We think the SDDs result from deficient blood flow to the eye caused by these vascular diseases. We therefore believe that patients with SDDs should be warned they may have life-threatening undetected heart conditions that should be evaluated and treated.

“Further research needs to be done in women and disadvantaged groups where neglected heart disease is a serious issue. Eye scans for SDDs and routine cholesterol blood tests could address this. Additionally, treating the cardiovascular condition and restoring the eye’s blood supply may also help the SDDs.”

This work should prompt retinal specialists to look for both drusen and SDDs with optical coherence tomography (OCT), a standard retinal imaging technique, to best counsel patients.

The new research measured the autofluorescence and evaluated OCT scans in 18 patients (32 eyes) with advanced AMD and geographic atrophy (GA). Because GA can happen in multiple regions of the retina, investigators analyzed 52 GA regions overall.

They also selected only patients who had OCT scans over the three previous years so they could determine whether the diseased regions started with drusen, SDDs, or both. 18 of these regions originated from drusen, 12 originated from SDDs, and 22 originated from mixtures of drusen and SDDs.

The team then measured the brightness of the fluorescent light coming from these regions with a very sensitive light meter. They found it was twice as bright in patients with SDDs when compared to those with drusen. Specifically, the brightness readings averaged 72 in SDD subjects and 36 in drusen subjects, with values in the mixed group falling in between.

“All these numbers translate into one basic fact—there are two different diseases in AMD, one with drusen and one with SDDs,” says Dr. Smith.

“The good news for patients and eye specialists is that in the clinic, we will not need advanced AF measurements to know which form of AMD the patient has. As our research showed, the two forms are associated with drusen and SDDs, and those deposits can be identified by standard retinal imaging. It therefore becomes important to diagnose which form of AMD the patient has for treatment and prevention of disease.”

“Two potentially distinct pathways to geographic atrophy in age-related macular degeneration characterized by quantitative fundus autofluorescence” by Wei Wei et al. Eye

Abstract

Two potentially distinct pathways to geographic atrophy in age-related macular degeneration characterized by quantitative fundus autofluorescence

Background/Aims

To demonstrate two distinct pathways to geographic atrophy (GA) that originate from soft drusen/ pigment epithelial detachments (PEDs) and subretinal drusenoid deposits (SDDs), respectively, and are characterized by their final quantitative autofluorescence (qAF) levels.

Methods

23 eyes of 18 patients with GA underwent spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and qAF imaging on the qAF-ready Heidelberg Spectralis. 52 GA Regions-of-interest (ROIs), or clusters of adjacent lesions, were selected, and the ROIs were divided into groups by the dominant iAMD precursors on prior serial tracked SD-OCT scans. Mean qAF values and structural SD-OCT findings of groups were compared.

Results

Group 1 lesions (soft drusen/PED precursors, 18/52) were isolated, with lower mean qAF (35.88 ± 12.75 units); group 3 lesions (SDD precursors, 12/52) were multilobular, with significantly higher mean qAF (71.62 ± 12.12 units, p < 0.05). Group 2 lesions, (mixed precursors, 22/52) had intermediate mean qAF (58.13 ± 67.92 units). Significantly greater prevalence of split RPE/ Bruch’s membrane complex in SDD-associated GA, suggesting basal laminar deposit (BLamD), than in drusen-associated lesions was the major structural difference.

Conclusion

Quantitative autofluorescence (qAF) of GA lesions may reflect two distinct pathogenic pathways and structural outcomes, originating from soft drusen/PED and subretinal drusenoid deposits (SDDs), with the final qAF values lower or higher, respectively. Basal laminar deposit specifically in and adjacent to SDD-associated lesions may account for their greater autofluorescence. The potential importance of this paradigm is that it could direct, simplify and facilitate research on geographic atrophy by dividing the disease into two components that may be studied separately.

AMD partner suspects a faulty batch of reference Radeon 7900 GPUs is affected by thermal issues

Please note that this post is tagged as a rumor.

There might be a fault batch of reference AMD Radeon 7900 GPUs

Igor Wallossek has provided a brief update to Der8auer findings.

As a reminder, Der8auer has recently posted a video focusing on AMD Radeon 7900 reference card thermal throttling related issues. Although he has not yet provided a full explanation, he claims that it is very likely that a faulty vapor chamber might be the main culprit behind GPU hot spot issues and as a result, thermal throttling.

Today Igor weighs in by sharing a note from a board partner. It is reported that the undisclosed OEM suspects at least one faulty batch of Radeon 7900 series might have left the factory. The possible issue being described is insufficient coolant added to the vapor chamber.

Possible explanation of Radeon 7900 thermal problem, Source: Igor’sLAB

Igor does not want to spoil the der8auer’s new findings, so what is important is that the YouTuber is to share a new video tomorrow which should provide us more information.

For those affected it is really too early to tell if these claims are even true. And even if there is a faulty batch of Radeon 7900 reference cards, it is not clear how many were made and where they were sent to yet.

AMD Radeon Graphics Cards Offer Better Performance In Windows 11 Vs Linux 6.2

This year has seen multiple updates to the Linux operating system from AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA when it comes to covering graphics cards in the open-source kernel or improvements in processing power, as well as video codecs, leaks of new technology, and more. That being said, the most recent tests conducted by the Linux Hardware editor and reviewer of the website Phoronix — as well as an entrepreneur, Linux software engineer, and analyst — Michael Larabel, shed light on the AMD Radeon Gaming performance in Windows 11 and Ubuntu Linux environments.

Windows 11 OS Offers Best Graphics Performance For AMD Radeon GPUs Vs Linux 6.2

Larabel used several games available on PC and Linux operating systems. The games were chosen by titles that worked exceptionally well on Steam Play in Linux compared to the Windows 11 experience. In the coming days, Larabel plans to place Intel and NVIDIA under similar tests to find out what performs better, especially entering a new year. Today’s focus is on AMD.

The game titles handpicked by Larabel were:

The Phoronix editor also chose three benchmarks for the tests. The first test handles better in Vulkan and OpenGL, while the second and third from UNIGINE are better equipped for OpenGL.

Yesterday, we reported that the Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics cards were going through isolated but growing issues with overheating and losing performance because of the temperature spikes. It will be interesting to see if this will affect performance. Larabel utilized the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT and the Radeon RX 7900 XTX GPUs for this testing.

The Windows operating system used for testing is Windows 11 Pro Edition, which he mentions was updated with the current drivers available. In contrast, the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT driver used is the Adrenalin 22.11.2 Recommended WHQL driver, and the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTDX used Adrenalin 22.12.2. The difference between the two drivers is that the 22.11.2 Recommended driver offers the latest updates for Navi 2 GPUs, while the 22.12.2 driver offers the latest RDNA 3 drivers.

AMD Radeon graphics cards deliver the best GPU performance on Windows 11, but Linux still comes out in 2nd place. (Image Credits: Phoronix)

With Linux, in Ubuntu 22.10, Larabel used Linux 6.2-rc1 alongside Mesa 23.0-devel, offering the best support for RDNA 2 and 3 architectures. The processor utilized for the testing is Intel’s i9-13900K CPU with 32GB DDR5-6000 memory on an ASUS PRIME Z790-P WIFI mobo and Solidigm’s P44 PRO 2 TB NVMe solid state drive.

Hitman 3 showed higher gains with Windows 11 Pro and the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX, whereas the AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT led close to the same performance on Steam Play in Linux and the standard Windows operating system (Windows was seven frames per second faster). The same is said for both frame time and resolution while stressing the game in a 4K environment.

Left 4 Dead 2 was the opposite, with the OpenGL rendering showing a better FPS on both graphics cards from AMD than in Windows 11 Pro. However, Portal 2 jumped back into Windows with both graphics cards, but Linux was a close competition on the newest GPU from AMD. Quake II RTX, especially having NVIDIA-centric ray tracing, was almost identical in Windows and Linux, with ray tracing activated showing the most similarities with it deactivated. Linux did pull slightly ahead of both graphics card tests in the game for the RADV ray tracing driver, which shows the amount of work placed into the compatibility and performance of the driver over the last year. But, once again, in 4K resolution tests, Windows 11 Pro outshined Ubuntu. Strange Brigade also favored Windows 11 Pro over Ubuntu Linux and X-Plane 12.

GravityMark 1.72 benchmarking allowed for the Ubuntu Linux graphics to outshine Windows 11 Pro most of the time, thanks to the RadeonSI Gallium3D driver and Vulkan driver support, including 4K resolution settings. Larabel notes that the UNIGINE Heaven benchmark is slowly becoming outdated but remains relatively faithful to OpenGL native benchmarking. Windows 11 did show the most considerable improvement on the Heaven benchmark tests but flipped in the Superposition benchmarks, only gaining a slight lead over Windows.

Next for the Phoronix editor will be Intel Arc Graphics and NVIDIA’s newer RTX 40 series GPUs in the coming days. You can check all benchmark results on his Phoronix website, and you can check out his other projects on his professional portfolio site, MichaelLarabel.com.
