NFL AFC Championship injuries: Chiefs’ Travis Kelce (back) a game-time decision; Bengals down two OL again

Finally, we have established our final four for the 2022 NFL season, and now, it’s time to decide which teams will play in Super Bowl LVII. The San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs are entering what is Week 21 of the season, and all four teams are dealing with injuries. 

Below, we will break down the injury updates for conference championship Sunday. Who’s in? Who’s out? Who’s trending in the right direction? This is your one-stop shop for everything injury related in the NFL.

Cincinnati Bengals at Kansas City Chiefs (-1.5)

  • Chiefs: TE Travis Kelce (back), WR Justin Watson (illness), WR Mecole Hardman (pelvis) QUESTIONABLE
  • Bengals: G Alex Cappa (ankle), T Jonah Williams (knee) OUT

Everyone had eyes on Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes this week as he suffered a high ankle sprain in the win over the Jacksonville Jaguars Saturday. Despite that injury, head coach Andy Reid told reporters Friday that Mahomes will start Sunday and noted that “he’s moving around good.” Mahomes was a full participant in practice all week, and so were running back Jerick McKinnon (ankle) and linebacker Willie Gay Jr. (toe). With Mahomes starting, the Chiefs’ biggest injury concern involves Travis Kelce. The first-team All-Pro was added to the injury report after his back locked up Friday. Kelce is listed as a true game-time decision for Sunday’s game. Wide receivers Mecole Hardman (pelvis) and Justin Watson (illness) are also questionable.

Meanwhile, the Bengals added Hayden Hurst to the team’s injury report ahead of Sunday’s AFC title game rematch with the Chiefs. Hurst, who was not on the injury report Wednesday, was limited during Thursday’s practice with a calf injury. On Friday, Hurst declared he’ll be on the field when the Bengals face Kansas City on Sunday. Not all the injury news was good for Cincinnati, as starting offensive linemen Alex Cappa (ankle) and Jonah Williams (knee) were both ruled out for the second straight game. Cappa has been out since he injured his ankle against the Ravens in Week 18, while Williams missed last week’s game after he dislocated a kneecap during the Bengals’ playoff win over Baltimore. Jackson Carman and Max Scharping are once again expected to replace both players in the starting lineup.

Cincinnati has had five playoff wins in the last two years–that number is half of all the wins the Bengals have in franchise history. If the Bengals defeat the Chiefs this Sunday, they will become just the 9th team to make a repeat appearance to the Super Bowl the year after losing.

Kansas City Chiefs:

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-20 last Saturday to advance to their fifth straight AFC Championship game. Mahomes suffered a high ankle sprain in the first quarter but returned in the second half finishing 22-of-30 for 195 yards and two touchdowns, missing only 13 plays. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid praised the fifth-year-quarterbacks resiliency after the game.

“He’s a tough kid,” said Reid via Pete Sweeney of arrowheadpride.com. “He wanted to be in there. He wanted to be competing, and that’s a tribute to him and his competitiveness.

Kansas City fell 27-24 to the Bengals in this season’s Week 13 meeting and in last year’s AFC Championship game.

Patrick Mahomes says he’s ‘ready to go’ for AFC title game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — If there was ever a doubt about his availability for Sunday’s AFC Championship Game, Patrick Mahomes put an end to it.

“AFC championship week,” the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback said about Sunday’s conference title game against the Cincinnati Bengals. “Ready to go.”

Mahomes suffered a high ankle sprain in the first quarter of Saturday’s 27-20 divisional round playoff victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. He returned to the game in the second half.

Coach Andy Reid said he expected Mahomes to be a full practice participant Wednesday. Mahomes said the ankle has progressed since the game against the Jaguars.

“It’s doing good,” he said. “I’ve done a few days of treatment, a few days of rehab. Excited to get on the practice field and kind of test it out and see where I’m at. But it’s feeling good so far.

“I felt better than I thought I was going to be after the game. Moving on it during the game definitely hurt. But after the game, I was able to rest it and kind of ice it up and do different stuff like that. I felt in a little bit better position and obviously the next morning felt a little bit better, and then I’ve continued to get better throughout the week, so we’ll see how I feel today at practice.”

Mahomes’ style of play changed after he returned to the game against the Jaguars. He led the league in passes from outside the pocket in the regular season but made no such throws in the second half.

It was only his second half this season in which he made no throws outside the pocket. Mahomes said he anticipated he would have to work around the injury against the Bengals.

“I’ll have to find ways to be able to push off and be able to still make the throws the right way,” he said. “I’ll push it a little bit today and then the next day and then the next day again and see what I can do then. Not reaggravate the injury, obviously, but push it to see what I’ll be able to do on Sunday.”

Packers expected to consider trading Aaron Rodgers to AFC team in 2023 offseason, per report

Aaron Rodgers was admittedly unsure of his NFL future after the Packers’ 2022 season ended in Week 18. The star quarterback later emphasized that he’d be open to playing elsewhere if the right opportunity arose. And now, with just two weeks of playoff football left until the start of the offseason, Green Bay is expected to consider a trade of Rodgers, according to ESPN.

“It’s hard to imagine that he’s gonna retire and walk away and surrender $110 million in guaranteed money,” Adam Schefter said on “SportsCenter” Tuesday. “So that means he’s either back with Green Bay, or the team explores the idea of trading him. Now, Jordan Love is getting closer and closer to playing. … (So) yes, one of these scenarios that the Green Bay Packers are expected to explore this offseason is the idea … they could have to part ways with Aaron Rodgers in the form of a trade.”

“That doesn’t mean it will happen,” Schefter continued. “But if he wants that, and they’re on the same page, then it’s certainly realistic. … And if they do go ahead and trade him, it would be to the AFC.”

Rodgers is just one year removed from signing a three-year, $150M extension with the Packers. He also went out of his way in his first post-Week 18 remarks to highlight Green Bay as his preferred NFL home. But Love, who briefly replaced Rodgers due to injury this season, is already heading toward his fourth NFL season after the Packers moved up to make him their first-round draft pick in 2020. And the team could be looking to replenish its draft assets and salary cap space after a disappointing 9-8 finish in 2022.

Should Rodgers and the Packers look to part ways after 18 seasons together, a number of AFC teams would likely make a play for the four-time NFL MVP. The Jets, Raiders, Titans and Patriots stand out as logical suitors: New York is positioned for a playoff run but has a pledged need for QB help; Las Vegas is set to trade Derek Carr and last year acquired Rodgers’ top target Davante Adams; Tennessee could move on from Ryan Tannehill; New England is restructuring its offensive staff.

Patrick Mahomes suffers injury scare as Kansas City Chiefs reach AFC championship game

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-20 on Saturday to advance to the AFC championship game but there is now concern over the fitness of Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs’ star quarterback was brought down by Jaguars’ Arden Key and Corey Peters in the first quarter and replays showed Mahomes’ ankle getting caught awkwardly under Key as both men fell to the ground.

Mahomes instantly reached for his right ankle and was seen limping to the sidelines to speak to his team’s coaches before hobbling back onto the field.

“Obviously, I have a lot of adrenaline going right now, so we’ll see how it feels,” Mahomes told reporters.

“But I’ll hop right in the treatment tonight and try to do whatever I can to be as close to 100 percent by next week.

“Luckily for us, we played the early game on Saturday, so we get an extra almost half a day that I can let that ankle rest.”

Despite his injury, the 27-year-old stayed in the game for the rest of the first quarter but he was in obvious discomfort.

In the second quarter, with his ankle taped up, Mahomes appeared to get into a heated discussion with head coach Andy Reid and threw his jacket down as he headed to the locker room for evaluation.

Chad Henne took over at quarterback and went on to lead the Chiefs to a touchdown to take a 17-7 lead.

Despite the team listing him as questionable to return, Mahomes came back in the second half and led the team to the victory, ending the night with 195 yards passing and two touchdowns.

“I didn’t want to go get the X-Rays or whatever it was. I just wanted to continue to play,” Mahomes added, explaining his argument with Reid.

“I told them I’d do it at halftime but the coach, in the best interest of me, made me go back there and get that X-Ray before coming back into the game.

“For a while, I thought I could play through it but he said he would not put me back in ‘so might as well go get that X-Ray and if it’s negative or whatever I’ll put you back in.’

“I ran back there, got the X-Ray and was able to play and finish the game.”

The Chiefs have now reached the AFC Championship game for the fifth consecutive year but there are now doubts about Mahomes’ ability to play on January 29.

Their opponent will be either the Cincinnati Bengals or the Buffalo Bills, with both teams set to play later on Sunday.

“He’s a tough kid. He wanted to be in there,” Reid told reporters when asked about Mahomes, not committing to him playing next Sunday.

“He wanted to be competing and that’s a tribute to him and his competitiveness.

“However, you got to make sure he’s okay, physically okay, where he can protect himself and if he can’t then he can’t play.

“You have to go to the next guy. He’s a tough nut and, when I tell you he is competitive, he’s very very competitive.”

Elsewhere, the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the New York Giants 38-7 to advance to the team’s eighth NFC championship game in franchise history and the first since 2018.

The Eagles came out of the gates strong and finished even stronger.

Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts threw for 154 yards and two touchdowns while adding a rushing touchdown as well. Eagles running backs Miles Sanders and Kenneth Gainwell combined to rush for 202 yards.

The Eagles will face either the Dallas Cowboys or the San Francisco 49ers on January 29 for a place in the Super Bowl final on February 12.

2023 NFL playoff schedule, bracket: Dates, times, TV, streaming for every round of NFC and AFC postseason

Super Wild Card Weekend has lived up to its name and that’s because the opening round of the NFL playoffs has given us several super wild games so far. 

The Sunday action kicked off in Buffalo, where the Bills almost became one of the biggest upset victims in NFL history. The Bills, who were favored by 14 points, were able to escape with a 34-31 win that will allow them to advance to the divisional round for the third straight year. 

There was also a lot of drama on Saturday, and most that went down in Jacksonville during a game where the Jaguars came back from a 27-point deficit to stun the Chargers, 31-30. Trevor Lawrence threw four interceptions during a first half where the Jaguars fell behind 27-0, but he played nearly perfect football after that. The 27-point comeback was the third-largest in NFL postseason history. 

The 49ers also advanced on Saturday with a 41-23 win over the Seahawks. 

Although three games are now in the books for the wild-card round, there are still three more to go, so buckle up and get ready. 

With that in mind, here’s a look at the entire postseason schedule. (And don’t forget, there could be a neutral site AFC title game this year: If the Bills and Chiefs end up playing each other in the AFC Championship Game, then the game will be played in Atlanta.)

Super Wild Card Weekend

Saturday, Jan. 14

  • (2) 49ers 41-23 over (7) Seahawks. The 49ers got a brief scare from the Seahawks on a day where Seattle jumped put to a 17-16 halftime lead. But in the second half, San Francisco broke the game open with a dominating performance. Brock Purdy threw for 332 yards while also becoming the first rookie in NFL history to total four touchdowns in a playoff game. (Purdy finished with three passing touchdowns and one rushing score).
  • (4) Jaguars 31-30 over (5) Chargers. The Jaguars won this game by pulling off one of the biggest comebacks in NFL history. The Jags fell behind, 27-0, early in the game due in large part to four interceptions from Trevor Lawrence, but they rebounded to pull off the stunning win, thanks in large part to Lawrence, who threw four touchdown passes.  

Sunday, Jan. 15

  • (2) Bills 34-31 over (7) Dolphins. The Dolphins went into this game as the biggest underdog in the history of the wild-card round (+14) and despite those odds, they were still able to put a major scare into the Bills. In the end, the Bills were able to win this game thanks to Josh Allen (352 passing yards, three touchdowns) and a defense that came up with multiple big plays, including two turnovers, four sacks and a fourth-down stop that iced the game with just 2:30 left to play. 
  • (6) Giants at (3) Vikings (-3), 4:30 p.m. ET (Fox, stream on fuboTV). These two played one of the wildest games of the season on Christmas Eve in a matchup that wasn’t decided until Greg Joseph hit a 61-yard field goal on the final play. This will be Minnesota’s first home playoff game since the Minneapolis Miracle in January 2018.
  • (6) Ravens at (3) Bengals (-8), 8:15 p.m. ET (NBC, stream on fuboTV). It’s not clear if Lamar Jackson (knee) is going to play on Sunday, but even if he does, it will mark his first action in six weeks if he’s on the field. Jackson did lead the Ravens to a 19-17 win over the Bengals back in Week 5, but the Bengals got their revenge with a 27-16 win in Week 18 to get a split of the season series.

Monday, Jan. 16

  • (5) Cowboys at (4) Buccaneers (+2.5), 8:15 p.m. ET (ABC/ESPN, stream on fuboTV). If the Cowboys are going to advance to the divisional round, they’re going to have to do something they’ve never done: Beat Tom Brady. The Cowboys are 0-7 all time against the Buccaneers QB and that includes a Week 1 loss where Tampa Bay topped Dallas 19-3.

Divisional Round

Saturday, Jan. 21 and Sunday, Jan. 22

NFC

  • Giants/Buccaneers/Cowboys at (1) Eagles
  • Vikings/Buccaneers/Cowboys at (2) 49ers

If the Giants beat the Vikings on Sunday, they’ll play the Eagles, which will leave the 49ers hosting the winner of Cowboys-Buccaneers. If the Vikings win, they’ll play the 49ers while the Eagles will host the winner of Cowboys- Buccaneers. Which ever team hosts the winner of Cowboys-Buccaneers will definitely be playing on Sunday, Jan. 22. 

AFC

  • Jaguars/Ravens at (1) Chiefs
  • Jaguars/Bengals at (2) Bills

If the Bengals beat the Ravens, then Cincinnati will travel to Buffalo in the divisional round and Jacksonville will head to Kansas City. On the other hand, if the Ravens win, then Baltimore will travel to Kansas City and Jacksonville will head to Buffalo. 

The NFL will announce the divisional round schedule at some point during the wild-card round.

Bills vs. Dolphins score: Live updates, stats, highlights, analysis as AFC East rivals clash in wild-card game

The Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills have one half of their Super Wild Card Weekend matchup in the books. At the break, Josh Allen’s club finds itself ahead, 20-17, but this AFC East showdown may be a bit closer than those may have expected.  

Both of these teams were a little tight to start as the Bills turned the ball over on downs on their opening possession and the Dolphins went three-and-out, but Buffalo quickly settled in after that and went on a 17-0 run. Allen completed a 52-yard pass to Stefon Diggs that would set up a 6-yard touchdown reception by Dawson Knox to start the scoring on the day, and a 12-yard run by James Cook on the following possession complemented a Dean Marlowe interception off rookie Skylar Thompson midway through the first quarter. 

However, after that run by Buffalo, the Dolphins put together a 17-0 run of their own to tie the game right before the half. The bulk of those points came courtesy of two interceptions that Miami was able to force off Josh Allen. After a ball bounced off Cole Beasley and landed into the arms of Jevon Holland, Thompson was able to connect with Mike Gesicki for a touchdown that helped tie the game along with a Tyreek Hill two-point conversion. 

As we’ve seen with this Bills offense before, however, you can’t leave it any time. After Miami tied the game with 33 second left in the half, Buffalo marched 54 yards down the field and retook the lead, thanks to a Tyler Bass field goal. 

Can the Dolphins rally in the second half and pull off the biggest upset of the weekend or will the Bills hang on to advance to the divisional round? We’re about to find out. Chargers vs. Jaguars score: Live updates, game stats, highlights, analysis from AFC wild-card showdown

The Los Angeles Chargers and Jacksonville Jaguars are battling from TIAA Bank Stadium, as the first day of Super Wild Card Weekend wraps up. It’s been all Chargers so far, as Brandon Staley’s squad secured a 27-7 halftime lead. 

Trevor Lawrence had about as rough of a first half as one could have. On his first 16 passing attempts, the Jaguars quarterback completed four to his teammates, and four to the Chargers. The former No. 1 overall pick was intercepted four times in the first half — three being recorded by Asante Samuel Jr. Lawrence became the fifth quarterback to throw three interceptions in a playoff quarter since 1991, but he was the first to do it in a first quarter. 

Lawrence did lead a seven-play, 47-yard drive that was capped with an Evan Engram touchdown right before the halftime break, but there is plenty of work to do in the second half.

NFL picks possible neutral site location for possible AFC Championship game following Bills-Bengals cancellation

The NFL has announced Atlanta as the host city for the AFC Championship game should the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs meet in the conference title game.

Previously, the NFL owners approved the unprecedented post-season plan to host a game at a neutral site following the cancellation of the Bills’ game against the Cincinnati Bengals on January 2.

The game was initially suspended and then postponed after Damar Hamlin collapsed, suffering a cardiac arrest.

The post-season scenario was put in place due to the Bills having played one less game than the Chiefs and not having a fair opportunity to secure the No. 1 seed in the AFC.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta will host the game should the two teams meet.

“We are heartened by the continued improvement and progress of Damar Hamlin in his recovery, and Damar and his family remain top of mind for the entire NFL community,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell stated Thursday.

“We are also grateful to Arthur Blank and the Atlanta Falcons for agreeing to host the AFC Championship Game in Atlanta should the Bills and Chiefs advance. We thank both of those clubs for their assistance in the planning process.”

The NFL said Thursday that the league had designated Atlanta as a possible host site for displaced postseason games prior to the start of the season.

The NFL noted that Atlanta “is almost equidistant from both potential participating teams’ cities.”

NFL selects Atlanta for potential Bills-Chiefs AFC Championship

If an AFC Championship between the Bills and Chiefs had been held in Buffalo or Kansas City, it would have been played outdoors, with weather a factor.

Now? Not.

The NFL has selected Atlanta — yes, Atlanta — as the neutral site for a conference championship game between the Bills and Chiefs, if both qualify.

Weather won’t be a factor. And the game won’t be played on grass, the preferred surface of the NFL’s players.

But it could be conducive to a pinball machine of scoring, with offenses unimpeded by cold or wind or rain or snow.

There’s another factor to consider. By picking one of the various Super Bowl host cities for the AFC Championship, the NFL could be viewing this as a test run for possibly making future conference championships neutral-site games.

Regardless, this one should have been outside. In the elements.

At least the hot dogs and beer will be cheap.
