Pelicans exploring JJ Redick trade: Sources

As Feb. 2 looms as the NBA’s deadline for teams to aggregate acquired players in a trade later, the New Orleans Pelicans have focused on the Philadelphia 76ers, Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics as potential trade destinations for JJ Redick, sources tell The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

Redick, whose family resides in Brooklyn, is believed to have a strong preference to return to the northeast area. No deal is imminent yet, sources said.

In the 76ers, Nets and Celtics, the Pelicans are targeting a championship contender for a trade home. All three teams have expressed interest, sources said. Redick is on a $13.1 million contract that expires at the end of the season.

Redick, 34, is averaging 7.9 points this season. He has been a “Did Not Play-Coach’s Decision” in the Pelicans’ past two games. New Orleans has two young, promising guards in Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Kira Lewis who are on the precipice of rotation spots in the crowded backcourt.

A 15-year NBA veteran, Redick has had a highly productive career, averaging 13 points and shooting 41.4 percent from 3-point range in 912 NBA games.

The Athletic reported on Tuesday that teams were placing calls on Redick and Lonzo Ball and that the Pelicans have shown openness to discussing both in potential packages.

The NBA has two upcoming dates relating to the March 25 trade deadline:

Feb. 2: The last day a player can be traded and still be aggregated in a multi-player transaction at the March 25 trade deadline.

Feb. 6: Most players who signed free-agent contracts in the offseason can begin to be traded.

This is a developing story. More to come.
