NFL rumors: Eagles talked Carson Wentz trade with 2 teams, report says

Trade buzz regarding Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz is quickly building. But it’s getting hard to know what to believe.

Ben Albright, an NFL reporter for KOA Radio in Denver, says the “Niners and (surprise) Texans have made calls that I’m aware of. Lot of ‘offers’ getting leaked, which usually means the team shopping a player is still fishing. … Basically 2 or 3 teams in it, but not at Eagles’ price point. Leaks on ‘compensation’ coming from the Philly side, because they’re trying to get teams involved and drive the price up. Couple other teams called to inquire about price, but made no offer.”

But at the same time, the Houston Chronicle’s John McClain says the Texans, who are shopping quarterback Deshaun Watson, aren’t a likely trade candidate with the Eagles.

They don’t call teams. Teams call them. And they’ve told everybody they’re not trading Watson. Doesn’t mean they won’t do it eventually. I guarantee you, if they did, it would not be for Carson Wentz and the Eagles. And they’ve said it publicly, they’ve said it privately that they are not trading Watson. And so anybody that says they’ve called the Eagles, not true. If they traded him, it would be [to] the Jets. So no, they have not contacted anyone about trading Watson.”

As for the Wentz rumors, the two teams most closely linked to the Eagles are the Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears.

The Colts could be the frontrunner for Wentz, since they have a ton of cap space, need a QB after Philip Rivers’ retirement and have a pair of Wentz’s former teachers on staff: head coach Frank Reich and wide receivers coach Mike Groh.

But the Bears make sense as a possible destination for Wentz as well. Chicago remains interested in moving on from QB Mitch Trubisky. The Bears also have Nick Foles at quarterback, who could be an interesting toss-in as part of a Wentz trade. Plus, on Monday, the Bears promoted former Wentz confidant John DeFilippo to pass game coordinator.
