MLB rumors: Yankees release 2 veterans from minor-league deals

After veteran infielder Derek Dietrich opted out of his Yankees minor-league deal, the team released a pair of veterans at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Right-handed eliever Nick Goody and catcher Robinson Chirinos each were let go from their contracts Sunday, the Railriders said in an email.

The Yankees didn’t call either player up to the majors this season.

They’ll hope to latch on to clubs that could give them quicker routes to the majors leagues.

Both Goody and Chirinos put up solid numbers at Triple-A.

Goody, who has six years of big-league experience, was 4-1 with a 2.86 ERA in 17 games. He had 31 strikeouts in 22 innings. Chirinos, a 37-year-old with nine years in the majors, was hitting .278 with three homers in 13 games. Chirinos broke his wrist in spring training and missed the start of the minor-league season.

Dietrich, an eight-year big leaguer, was hitting .215 in 36 games with the Railriders.

From the Yankees following Sunday night’s 4-2 win over the Mets:

The Yankees finished 2-4 on their rain-shortened six-game home stand…are still just 2-7 in their last nine games after winning seven of their previous nine games. Are 0-0-2 in two doubleheaders this season (split a doubleheader vs. Toronto on 5/27 at Yankee Stadium) and have won (two) or split (five) seven of their last nine doubleheaders since the start of 2020…are 4-0-3 in seven twin-bills vs. the Mets. Are 4-6 in Interleague play this season.
