Everything Marcus Freeman Said After Notre Dame Defeated North Carolina

“I think if you don’t look at those tough situations and say, ‘We’re going to be better because of it,’ you have to use it as a positive situation. And that’s what I challenged the group with, somehow, some way, that Ohio State game has to make us better. Same thing with the loss to Marshall. And for each person it could be different.

“For me, it’s, again, how do you learn from motivating a team to play the number two team in the country the following week to make sure that there’s no drop off, right? And then to be able to evaluate. It shouldn’t take a loss to be able to say, ‘Okay, we’re going to evaluate everything we’re doing our program with a critical eye.’ And so, I’m the number one person that has to learn from those first three weeks, right, even from a win last week, and even from this week.

“So, we have to look at those tough losses as somehow, some way being a positive, and continue to grow and continue to get better. And that’s what I keep saying, we can’t only just focus on the outcome of the game. And we know that’s how we’re judged, right? Wins and losses. We get that. But sometimes that can mask the reality of your team getting better. And that’s what we’ve got to do, continue to focus on what it takes to get better as a football team.”
