Bears’ offensive coaches locked in on Alabama’s Mac Jones

The Chicago Bears have tackled the quarterback position this offseason with intent, but it hasn’t exactly panned out for them. They’ve been in discussions with teams trading or potentially trading quarterbacks, but nothing has come to fruition.

The most notable was Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, who Chicago pursued aggressively. They even reportedly offered three first-round picks, a third-round pick and two players for Wilson. But the Seahawks informed them that they weren’t trading Wilson at this time.

Instead, the Bears had to settle for signing veteran quarterback Andy Dalton to a one-year deal worth $10 million, which wasn’t exactly the home run fans were hoping for after the Wilson rumors.

Now, with the addition of Dalton, it feels like a guarantee that Chicago will be looking to add a rookie quarterback to the fold.

One of the quarterbacks that has drawn their eye — along with countless other teams — is Alabama’s Mac Jones, who drew a crowd at the university’s pro day. Among those in attendance was Bears offensive coordinator Bill Lazor, passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo and area scout Sam Summerville.

Unfortunately, there’s a good chance that Jones isn’t on the board when Chicago’s first pick comes around at No. 20. Which is why the Bears are reportedly doing their homework on Day 2 quarterbacks, given there are a plethora of needs that could be addressed.

Then again, don’t underestimate GM Ryan Pace’s conviction. When he sees his guy, he’ll do whatever it takes to land him. If that happens to be Jones, we could wind up seeing him in a Bears uniform.
