Avalanche vs. Golden Knights score: Live updates from Lake Tahoe NHL West division outdoor showdown

The COVID-19 pandemic has taught the sports world to expect the unexpected and that’s exactly what happened on Saturday. After one period of play between the Colorado Avalanche and Vegas Golden Knights at Lake Tahoe, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman joined the NBC broadcast and announced that the game was being postponed until midnight ET/9 p.m. PT on Saturday as a result of unsafe ice conditions.

The bright sun on the clear day simply caused too many issues throughout the first period earlier in the day. Several players and even a referee lost their footing on slushy ice. After the first period concluded, officials made an attempt to work with the ice and covered sections of it with tarps in an effort to keep the sun off of it.

During the first period of what began as Saturday’s game, the Avalanche opened the scoring with a goal from defenseman Samuel Girard thanks to a beautiful pass from Nathan MacKinnon. Check below for updates of the second period and more as the action happens.
