Microsoft Not Changing Xbox Live Gold Pricing, Free-to-Play Games Unlocked

Microsoft has announced that it is reversing its decision and will not change Xbox Live Gold pricing. Furthermore, free-to-play games will no longer require an Xbox Live Gold membership to play on Xbox consoles.As detailed in an Xbox Wire post, this decision comes after an earlier announcement that it would be raising the prices of Xbox Live Gold, which would mean that $60 would have gotten you only six months instead of 12.Microsoft’s full statement is as follows;

“We messed up today and you were right to let us know. Connecting and playing with friends is a vital part of gaming and we failed to meet the expectations of players who count on it every day. As a result, we have decided not to change Xbox Live Gold pricing.

“We’re turning this moment into an opportunity to bring Xbox Live more in line with how we see the player at the center of their experience. Free-to-play games will truly be free and you will no longer need an Xbox Live Gold membership to play those games on Xbox. We are working hard to deliver this change as soon as possible in the coming months.

“If you are an Xbox Live Gold member already, you stay at your current price for renewal. New and existing members can continue to enjoy Xbox Live Gold for the same prices they pay today. In the US, $9.99 for 1-month, $24.99 for 3-months, $39.99 for 6-months and $59.99 for retail 12-months.”

The Best Games to Play on Xbox Series X|S

Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, took to Twitter to apologize for the “angst and emotion” the initial announcement caused and said that the company will learn from it for the future.

“Apologies for all the angst and emotion this caused today for our customers,” Spencer wrote. “As always, we appreciate the feedback. This is a good learning opportunity for us and we will learn from it.”

Prior to the reversal, we wrote an opinion piece about how this increase wasn’t a great look for Microsoft, especially during the middle of a pandemic. Fortunately, for many around the world, this is now all good news.

Microsoft backtracks on Xbox Live Gold price hike

Microsoft has reversed its controversial Xbox Live price increase. The company announced a price hike on Friday that would have doubled the cost of a yearly subscription to the service, which is required to play games online on Xbox consoles, to $120 for many users. Now, though, Microsoft says the price will stay the same.

Beyond that, Microsoft has decided to bring Xbox Live in line with Sony and Nintendo’s online services by dropping the subscription requirement for free-to-play games. Popular free-to-play titles like Fortnite are playable on PlayStation consoles and the Nintendo Switch without an online subscription, but you still need one for Xbox consoles; Microsoft says it’s “working hard to deliver this change as soon as possible in the coming months.”

Here’s Microsoft’s full statement, which was just delivered as an update to a blog post:

We messed up today and you were right to let us know. Connecting and playing with friends is a vital part of gaming and we failed to meet the expectations of players who count on it every day. As a result, we have decided not to change Xbox Live Gold pricing.

We’re turning this moment into an opportunity to bring Xbox Live more in line with how we see the player at the center of their experience. For free-to-play games, you will no longer need an Xbox Live Gold membership to play those games on Xbox. We are working hard to deliver this change as soon as possible in the coming months.

If you are an Xbox Live Gold member already, you stay at your current price for renewal. New and existing members can continue to enjoy Xbox Live Gold for the same prices they pay today. In the US, $9.99 for 1-month, $24.99 for 3-months, $39.99 for 6-months and $59.99 for retail 12-months.

Thank you.

Microsoft’s focus in recent years has been on Xbox Game Pass, which has an Ultimate tier that includes access to Xbox Live Gold. While Game Pass provides great value for many players, the Gold price increases came off as an attempt to nudge people into paying for the more expensive service.

It’s not surprising that the initial announcement was so poorly received, but Microsoft’s reversal is good news for Xbox Live Gold subscribers who aren’t interested in Xbox Game Pass, and even better news for people who only use Xbox Live Gold to play free-to-play games.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Leaker Reveals Why We Haven’t Seen One Highly-Requested DLC Character

A Super Smash Bros. Ultimate leaker has revealed why we haven’t seen one of the most highly-requested DLC characters come to the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite game. Ahead of every Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC character reveal, a few names start to make the rounds and trend on Twitter, such as Sora from Kingdom Hearts and Crash Bandicoot. Among these in-demand characters is Geno, one of the main characters in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.

Typically — unless your name is Waluigi — being a Nintendo character and in-demand is enough to get you in Super Smash Bros., but it hasn’t been enough for Geno. And according to the aforementioned leaker, there are a few reasons for this.

Speaking on Japanese forum 5ch, the anonymous leaker — who gained credibility by “leaking” Steve from Minecraft and Hero from Dragon Quest before they were announced — claimed that Nintendo is generally perplexed by the demand for the character.

Elaborating, the leaker claims Nintendo has heard fans loud and clear, but is confused because there appears to be an inconsequential amount of support for a remake of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars or follow-up. Of course, Nintendo’s temperature check may be incorrect, depending on who you ask, but it’s what the leaker says is a topic of discussion at Nintendo when it comes to putting Geno in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Continuing, Nintendo is apparently trepidatious about Nintendo characters becoming Smash characters, or in other words, characters known just for being in Smash. If this is true, it more or less means that we won’t see Geno added until Super Mario RPG is revived in a major war, which looks unlikely at this point.

That said, as always, take everything here with a grain of salt. Not only is nothing here official, but even if it’s all 100 percent true, it’s also all subject to change.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available via the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch only. For more coverage on the best-selling and critically-acclaimed platform fighter from 2018 — including all of the latest news, rumors, and leaks — click here or check out the relevant links below:

Vicarious Visions Reportedly Brought Into Blizzard to Work on Diablo 2 Remake

Following the news that Vicarious Visions has been merged into Blizzard Entertainment, a new report says that the studio was brought into Blizzard to work on on the Diablo franchise, including a planned remake of Diablo 2.As reported by Bloomberg, Vicarious Visions, the studio behind such games as Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, has been working with Blizzard since last year, even though the announcement of its merger was only made today, January 22.

Up until 2020, the Diablo 2 remake was set to be developed by Blizzard’s Team 1, which is located at its Irvine, California campus and was the go-to group for reworking classic games. Its latest title, Warcraft III: Reforged, was not received positively and currently has a 59 on review aggregate site Metacritic, which also happens to be Blizzard’s lowest score to date. IGN gave Warcraft III: Reforged a 7/10, saying it “is an uninspiring remaster, but Warcraft 3 itself is still a great game nearly two decades later.”

Internal documents reviewed by Bloomberg pin the game’s failures on “poor planning, miscommunication and a rushed release due to financial pressure from management, among other factors.” One example given was that, following the game’s reveal in November 2018, it began taking pre-orders for 2019 before letting most of the development team know of the release window.

Blizzard and Team 1 obviously didn’t want to make the same mistakes with the much-anticipated Diablo 2 remaster, and following a “postmortem,” Blizzard ended up pulling the remaster from the team and putting the division behind Diablo IV in charge. Vicarious Visions is also said to be working on this project, which is or was known as Diablo II: Resurrected.

In October 2020, Blizzard reorganized the entire division known as Team 1 and members of the team were given opportunities to interview for other positions within the company. Those who did not find a position were eventually let go, while others chose to leave for independent studios like Frost Giant Inc., and DreamHaven Inc., the latter of which was started by Blizzard co-founder and former CEO Mike Morhaime.

Every IGN Blizzard Game Review

Prior to Warcraft III: Reforged, Team 1 was responsible for both Heroes of the Storm and StarCraft 2. In 2018, Blizzard began scaling down development of Heroes of the Storm, and StarCraft 2 also recently ended content development.

For those still playing Warcraft III: Reforged or waiting for any updates, a spokesperson for the company said it is “still committed to updates in support of the community.”

A report in 2020 stated that the long rumored Diablo 2 remaster was scheduled to arrive in that same year, and it’s possible these development shifts and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to its internal delay.

Buy Apple Stock at Record Highs Before Q1 Earnings?

Apple AAPL stock helped the Nasdaq hit new highs this week and the company reached its own records on Friday heading into the release of its first quarter fiscal 2021 earnings results on Wednesday, January 27. Apple has now jumped nearly 30% since the end of October and analysts are high on its newest iPhone.

Continued Domination

Apple needs no introduction as it continues its steady expansion beyond iPhones into services and more. But despite its successful diversification, its flagship smartphones still play a vital role at the company and on Wall Street, and accounted for 50% of total revenue in fiscal 2020.

Luckily, Wall Street is high on its first 5G-capable iPhone that launched in October. The iPhone is available in four models at various price points. Apple priced its higher-end models roughly the same as last year’s iPhone 11, despite the new features and its 5G abilities. And Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty called the iPhone 12 “Apple’s most successful product launch in the last five years.”

Apple has also benefitted from stronger Mac and iPad sales during the remote work and school environment. And its wearables unit that includes its smartwatch and popular wireless headphones has also grown, up 25% last year to top its key services unit’s 16% expansion.

Apple now has revenue streams coming from its massive App store, subscription services such as Spotify SPOT competitor Apple Music, as well as its streaming TV service that hopes to one day compete against  Netflix NFLX and others. The company also has a news offering, video gaming, and more.

Apple’s paid subscriptions grew by more than 35 million sequentially to reach over 585 million paid subscriptions across its various services last quarter. And executives expected to reach a total of 600 million before the end of the 2020 calendar year.

Before moving on, it is also worth remembering that Apple is pushing harder to bring more of its chips in-house. The move is projected to help cut costs and improve battery life and performance, as it continues to close the loop, while diversifying. There are even reports that Apple is trying to enter the electric vehicle space.

There’s More

Apple’s ambitious plans can go even further given that it ended last quarter with about $80 billion in net cash. The company has been slowly reducing its cash position to try to reach “a net cash neutral position over time.” Last quarter, it returned around $22 billion to shareholders via dividends and buybacks—its dividend yield rests at 0.60% right now.

Apple also remains the world’s most valuable brand and its stock price has outpaced Microsoft MSFT and Amazon AMZN over the last five years, up 460%. More recently, its shares have climbed 75% in the last year and 22% in the past three months.

Apple trades at 7.1X forward 12-month sales. This marks only a slight premium to its industry and represents a solid discount to Microsoft’s 10.2X, as it has for years. And AAPL’s 4-for-1 stock split at the end of the summer made it more attainable and attractive to many investors.

Bottom Line

The pandemic forced Apple to push back the release of its next-generation iPhone to October and not late September. This will help slightly boost its Q1 fiscal 2021 sales, as it goes up against an easier-to-compare period.

Zacks estimates call for Apple’s adjusted first quarter earnings to climb over 11% to $1.39 a share, on nearly 12% strong revenue that would see it pull in over $100 billion in a single quarter for the first time ever, at $102.6 billion.

Apple’s fiscal 2021 revenue is then projected to jump 17%, with its adjusted earnings expected to come in 23% higher. And AAPL’s positive longer-term earnings revisions help it land a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) right now.

There are always risks to playing a stock for near term gains around earnings, especially when it has surged to new highs heading into earnings. That said, longer-term investors shouldn’t worry about trying to time Apple if they are optimistic about its counited success.

More Stock News: This Is Bigger than the iPhone!

It could become the mother of all technological revolutions. Apple sold a mere 1 billion iPhones in 10 years but a new breakthrough is expected to generate more than 27 billion devices in just 3 years, creating a $1.7 trillion market.

Zacks has just released a Special Report that spotlights this fast-emerging phenomenon and 6 tickers for taking advantage of it. If you don’t buy now, you may kick yourself in 2021.

Microsoft doubles Xbox Live Gold subscription to $120 per year

Microsoft is raising prices for Xbox Live Gold memberships in certain markets in an apparent effort to convert more users to its Xbox Game Pass Ulimate, and the gaming community is not receiving the news well.

Microsoft announced in a blog post Friday that, moving forward, new six-month Xbox Live Gold subscriptions will cost $59.99, while three-month plans will cost $29.99 and one-month plans will cost $10.99.

That means a full year of Xbox Live Gold will go for nearly $120, double the price Microsoft charged for the 12-month plans that it quietly got rid of last year.

“Periodically, we assess the value and pricing of our services to reflect changes in regional marketplaces and to continue to invest in the Xbox community; we’ll be making price adjustments for Xbox Live Gold in select markets,” the company said.

The pricing changes won’t affect existing Xbox Live Gold subscribers, however, as they’ll still be able to renew their current plans at the same price. Microsoft is also letting players who upgrade to its Xbox Game Pass Ultimate — which costs $14.99 per month, or roughly $180 per year — convert any remaining time on their Xbox Live Gold memberships to Xbox Game Pass Ulimate without an additional cost.

Microsoft also said that the new prices won’t kick in until 45 days after subscribers receive an email and message center notification alerting them to the increases.

The new prices dramatically close the gap between the annual costs of Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions, a sign that Microsoft is likely trying to push more users to sign up for the latter.

The move drew fierce backlash from the gaming commmunity, which accused the company of being out of touch with the economic situation of many customers during the pandemic, as well as continuing to require them to pay for subscriptions even to play free-to-play games like “Fortnite” and “Call Of Duty: Warzone.”

“@Xbox have done this in the middle of a worldwide pandemic, where kids will be most affected, where finances are tight and online gaming is their main (sometimes only) way to play and communicate with friends. Let that sink in,” @swooper_d tweeted.

“Xbox also still remains the only platform you need a subscription to play free to play games, including Warzone,” gaming news site Charlie Intel tweeted.

Others also pointed to the stark pricing differences between Xbox and other online gaming platforms.

“I’m still in shock at how there is now a $100 Difference Between getting Nintendo Switch Online for a Year and Xbox Live Gold for a Year,” @JCretor tweeted.

Nintendo Switch Online memberships cost $19.99 and Playstation Plus memberships cost $59.99 for 12 months.

“We invest in our community by strengthening the digital safety of our players, enabling new ways to share, communicate and play with your friends, and delivering industry leading reliability across our network,” Microsoft said as part of its rationale for raising prices, while adding: “In many markets, the price of Xbox Live Gold has not changed for years and in some markets, it hasn’t changed for over 10 years.”

Microsoft Landed a Patent to Turn You Into a Chatbot

Photo: Stan Honda (Getty Images)

What if the most significant measure of your life’s labors has nothing to do with your lived experiences but merely your unintentional generation of a realistic digital clone of yourself, a specimen of ancient man for the amusement of people of the year 4500 long after you have departed this mortal coil? This is the least horrifying question raised by a recently-granted Microsoft patent for an individual-based chatbot.

First noticed by the Independent, The United States Patent and Trademark Office confirmed to Gizmodo via email that Microsoft is not yet permitted to make, use, or sell the technology, only to prevent others from doing so. The application for the patent was filed in 2017 but just approved last month.

Hypothetical Chatbot You (envisioned in detail here) would be trained on “social data,” which includes public posts, private messages, voice recordings, and video. It could take 2D or 3D form. It could be a “past or present entity”; a “friend, a relative, an acquaintance, [ah!] a celebrity, a fictional character, a historical figure,” and, ominously, “a random entity.” (The last one, we could guess, might be a talking version of the photorealistic machine-generated portrait library ThisPersonDoesNotExist.) The technology could allow you to record yourself at a “certain phase in life” to communicate with young you in the future.

I personally relish the fact that my chatbot would be useless thanks to my limited text vocabulary (“omg” “OMG” “OMG HAHAHAHA”), but the minds at Microsoft considered that. The chatbot can form opinions you don’t have and answer questions you’ve never been asked. Or, in Microsoft’s words, “one or more conversational data stores and/or APIs may be used to reply to user dialogue and / or questions for which the social data does not provide data.” Filler commentary might be guessed through crowdsourced data from people with aligned interests and opinions or demographic info like gender, education, marital status, and income level. It might imagine your take on an issue based on “crowd-based perceptions” of events. “Psychographic data” is on the list.

In summary, we’re looking at a Frankenstein’s monster of machine learning, reviving the dead through unchecked, highly-personal data harvesting.

“That is chilling,” Jennifer Rothman, University of Pennsylvania law professor and author of The Right of Publicity: Privacy Reimagined for a Public World told Gizmodo via email. If it’s any reassurance, such a project sounds like legal agony. She predicted that such technology could attract disputes around the right to privacy, the right to publicity, defamation, the false light tort, trademark infringement, copyright infringement, and false endorsement “to name only a few,” she said. (Arnold Schwarzenegger has charted the territory with this head.)

She went on:

It could also violate the biometric privacy laws in states, such as Illinois, that have them. Presuming that the collection and use of the data is authorized and people affirmatively opt in to the creation of a chatbot in their own image, the technology still raises concerns if such chatbots are not clearly demarcated as impersonators. One can also imagine a host of abuses of the technology similar to those we see with the use of deepfake technology—likely not what Microsoft would plan but nevertheless that can be anticipated. Convincing but unauthorized chatbots could create issues of national security if a chatbot, for example, is purportedly speaking for the President. And one can imagine that unauthorized celebrity chatbots might proliferate in ways that could be sexually or commercially exploitative.

Rothman noted that while we have lifelike puppets (deepfakes, for example) this patent is the first she’s seen that combines such tech with data harvested through social media. There are some ways that Microsoft might mitigate concerns with varying degrees of realism and clear disclaimers. Embodiment as Clippy the paperclip, she said, might help.

It’s unclear what level of consent would be required to compile enough data for even the lumpiest digital waxwork, and Microsoft did not share potential user agreement guidelines. But additional likely laws governing data collection (the California Consumer Privacy Act, the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation) might throw a wrench in chatbot creations. On the other hand, Clearview AI, which notoriously provides facial recognition software to law enforcement and private companies, is currently litigating its right to monetize its repository of billions of avatars scraped from public social media profiles without users’ consent.

Lori Andrews, an attorney who has helped inform guidelines for the use of biotechnologies, imagined an army of rogue evil twins. “If I were running for office, the chatbot could say something racist as if it were me and dash my prospects for election,” she said. “The chatbot could gain access to various financial accounts or reset my passwords (based on information conglomerated such as a pet’s name or mother’s maiden name which are often accessible from social media). A person could be misled or even harmed if their therapist took a two-week vacation, but a chatbot mimicking the therapist continued to provide and bill for services without the patient’s knowledge of the switch.”

Hopefully, this future never comes to pass, and Microsoft has offered some recognition that the technology is creepy. When asked for comment, a spokesperson directed Gizmodo to a tweet from Tim O’Brien, General Manager of AI Programs at Microsoft. “I’m looking into this – appln date (Apr. 2017) predates the AI ethics reviews we do today (I sit on the panel), and I’m not aware of any plan to build/ship (and yes, it’s disturbing).”

The Best New Features in Edge Chromium 88

The latest update for Edge Chromium, version 88, is finally rolling out. This version adds many new features to the Windows and macOS versions of the browser, like new password security tools, an updated look, and several quality-of-life enhancements. It’s a lot, so we’ll go over everything new in Edge 88 and show you how to use it.

Password generator and security monitor

Headlining Edge 88’s update notes are two big password features. First is a randomized password generator that auto-creates passwords whenever you create a new account or update an existing password. Edge saves the password and auto-fills it for you so you don’t have to memorize it.

The other new password tool is automated data breach monitoring. Edge cross-references any saved login information with the latest data breaches and will warn you if it believes any of your accounts are compromised.

Screenshot: Brendan Hesse

Both features require you to sign into Edge with a Microsoft account and turn on Password Syncing under Settings > Profile > Sync > Passwords. To enable the password generator:

  1. Go to Settings > Profile > Passwords.
  2. Turn on “Offer to save passwords” and “Suggest strong passwords.”

Now whenever you input a new password, Edge will offer to create it for you. The password monitoring is automatic and applies to any logins saved in Edge. You can find these under Settings > Profile > Passwords > Saved Passwords.

Sleeping tabs

Users can now set inactive tabs to “go to sleep” after a set time. Edge stops checking sleeping tabs in the background, which frees up your PC’s memory and CPU to be used elsewhere. According to Bleeping Computer, this cuts down an inactive tab’s memory usage by 32% on average, and CPU use by about 37%.

Users will see a popup notification suggesting they turn on sleeping tabs to reduce Edge’s resource use, but you can configure the setting in Settings > System > Save resources. You can choose how long a tab needs to be inactive before going to sleep, or set specific websites to never go to sleep.

Sidebar search

You can now search the web without opening a new tab or leaving the page you’re on. Simply highlight a word, then right-click > Search. A sidebar will open with search results.

New looks

Edge 88 also changes the browser’s appearance, including new “Fluent Design” interface icons that match Microsoft’s other products, and over 24 new browser themes you can use to personalize Edge’s look.

Screenshot: Brendan Hesse

Each theme has its own color scheme and wallpaper. The wallpaper selections include artwork from Microsoft’s first-party video game properties like Halo, Forza, Sea of Thieves, and more; Wonder Woman 1984; and a few original designs. You can preview and install them from the new Edge add-ons page.

Other new features

Finally, there’s a selection of smaller tweaks, some of which were only available on certain platforms but are now standard for all desktop versions of Edge:

To download the version 88 update, open Edge and go to Settings > About Microsoft Edge. The download will automatically start if it’s available, though Microsoft says it may take up to two weeks for some users to receive it.

How desperate are you for GPUs, CPUs, consoles? Newegg tests with new lottery

Aurich Lawson / Getty Images

Over the past 12 months, electronics retailers have been under increased fire and scrutiny for mishandling how they sell brand-new consoles and high-end PC components. This week, online retailer Newegg has moved forward with a peculiar new system for selling high-demand, low-supply electronics: the Newegg Shuffle. (Or, as the site’s metadata calls it, the Newegg Popular Product Lottery Queue.)

If you catch this article early enough on Friday, January 22, consider this a drop-everything suggestion to rush to the site by 5 pm ET and place a product-purchase request. Really: Do that right now if you’re interested in recent AMD CPUs, Nvidia GPUs, or the all-digital PlayStation 5. It’s free to try. We’ll wait.

OK, so that process might have been a bit confusing. What’s going on with the Newegg Shuffle?

Shuffling into a forced bundle? Not necessarily, but likely

The Newegg Shuffle buzz began earlier this week when savvy shoppers noticed a limited-time lottery event under the same name in messages sent to a limited pool of Newegg customers. It advertised a variety of CPUs and graphics cards, and the lead-in page included a sales pitch: Pick what you want to buy, sign into your established Newegg customer profile, and submit a request. Do this by a certain time, and within a few hours, you’d get notified if your account was selected to purchase any of the products you picked. (Meaning, you could try to sign up for every listing, or just one, without the choices apparently changing your odds of being randomly selected.)

The problems with that early test, however, came in the form of furious customers sharing images of what the shopping interface actually looked like. After clicking on the listing for a shiny new AMD processor or an Nvidia RTX 3080 graphics card, you’d be shown the real shopping option: a forced bundle. Every single option appeared to require purchasing a brand new motherboard, even if you didn’t need one. That was particularly egregious in the case of Nvidia’s graphics cards, which are compatible with the common PCI-e 3.0 standard and thus don’t necessitate a new motherboard for interested PC gamers.

When pressed by PC Mag about this anti-consumer, forced-bundle promotion, Newegg clarified that its Shuffle feature was still in “beta.” The promotion would cut down on forced bundles once it rolled out to all customers. Friday’s Newegg Shuffle launch has confirmed this—but a few forced bundles remain.

Both of today’s available AMD CPUs, the Ryzen 5 5600X and Ryzen 7 5800X, can be purchased as standalone options. They’re additionally listed with bundles, however, and that means you essentially have a better shot at purchasing them from Newegg if you’re willing to attach a motherboard purchase to the CPU. The same goes for one of the promotion’s GPUs, an ASUS flavor of the RTX 3070, which can either be purchased a la carte or with a bundled ASUS motherboard.

Three other GPUs appear in the promotion; two of them can only be purchased a la carte, and one, the ASUS RTX 3080, can only be purchased with a bundled ASUS motherboard (for a whopping combined price of $1,179.98).

And the all-digital PlayStation 5 on offer can only be purchased as part of a bundle, adding a staggering $160 to its normal $399 price with an extra controller (sure), a 1080p webcam (meh), and a media remote (ugh). Them’s some serious GameStop vibes, and not in a good way.

Microsoft taking leadership in the space

The worst part about Newegg Shuffle is that it’s arguably the best system currently on the market for interested PC parts shoppers. Otherwise, your best bet is following in-the-know Twitter accounts and online-shopping guides to learn exactly when high-end computer components and consoles are in stock—since retailers seem completely disinterested in, you know, letting us pre-order these things and enter a purchase queue.

The sole exception in this madness seems to be Xbox Series X/S. Microsoft has developed a somewhat scalper-proof purchasing system in the form of Xbox All Access. Combine a monthly subscription price with a dedicated Xbox account (and associated mailing address), and you can get your hands on a shiny new Xbox. Such systems are a pain for scalpers to transfer account ownership with. (As a bonus, buying a Series X/S this way may save you money compared to buying the hardware and attached subscription rates at retail prices.)

Until we see more retailers embrace customer-verification systems, purchase limits, and anti-scalper efforts, we’re likely going to see more funky “lottery” systems like Newegg’s, complete with predatory bundle-enticement offers.
