Capitals beat Flyers 3-2 (OT)

The Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers entered Wednesday night’s action both looking to snap extended losing streaks. Only one could be washed away though.

Morgan Frost sent a weak shot on Darcy Kuemper that the Caps netminder popped up into the air and behind him to kick the scoring off. Marcus Johansson hit paydirt on his second try as he guided home an Alex Ovechkin shot on a power play to tie things up. Patrick Brown beat Kuemper with a soft tip try in front to give Philly their lead back.

Sonny Milano tied it late for the Caps. Alex Ovechkin overtime winner!

Capitals beat Flyers 3-2!

  • The Capitals have had a really rough time in opening periods of late and that continued in this one. In their last five games, they have been outscored 11-1 in the first period. They eventually turned things around, tied the game up, and probably had more of the positive momentum heading into the first intermission.
  • The goal that they gave up was just straight-up awful from their netminder. Darcy Kuemper cannot be doing that especially when the team in front of him is having trouble putting the puck in the net themselves. He did not look comfortable in net whatsoever to start the game.
  • Marcus Johansson kicked one in that got called back and then stole one from Alex Ovechkin by touching a puck that was already headed over the goal line. Just a really evil game from Mojo/Jojo. Fitting.
  • Another pretty weak one let in by Kuemper in the second and the Caps just cannot score right now. They had the puck for the majority of the period but were unable to find the last pass or shot. 11 to 2 in five-on-five scoring chances in the second frame but the team with only 2 was the only one able to get on the board.
  • Good to see Nicklas Backstrom in the booth on TNT. Happy birthday, Nicke! Get back as soon as you can, please.
  • What’s the final score of the US’s match against England on Friday going to be? I’m worried about it, folks. It’s either going to be like 4-1 England or 1-0 to the good guys. No in-between. Maybe Berhalter will play Gio Reyna as he should have on Monday.
  • Georgetown should not be allowed to play basketball the literal same day as Capitals games. The puck looked like a bouncy ball at some points. One of the bigger home-ice disadvantages in the league.
  • I thought TJ Oshie was excellent in his return. His fantastic play set up Sonny Milano’s tying goal in the third and he grabbed an assist on the first Washington goal as well.
  • John Tortorella apparently got kicked in the face by a horse recently. If that happened to me you wouldn’t see me for the next six months.
  • Number 790 for Alex Ovechkin. What a game-winning shift from him in overtime.
  • I know this was probably a more negative time in Caps fandom recently so I’m going to switch the narrative up a bit in the comment section. Name one obscure Caps player that you’re thankful for and why. I’ll try and highlight my favorite at some point.

Happy Thanksgiving! We’ll next see the Caps on Friday when the Calgary Flames come to town for their one visit this season.

Germany vs. Japan: German players cover mouths in protest against FIFA clampdown on free speech in ‘OneLove’ armband row

CNN
 —

It was a moment so brief that the thousands of fans inside the Khalifa International Stadium on Wednesday could easily have missed it.

But a moment, the time it took for the photographers amassed in front of Germany’s World Cup team to snap a picture, was all it needed for the four-time winners to send a message to soccer’s world governing body.

Germany’s starting 11 all posed with their right hands in front of their mouths, and within minutes, the image was circulating widely on social media.

And as Germany kicked off their World Cup campaign against Japan in Group E, the team’s social media feed confirmed that the gesture was designed as a protest to FIFA’s decision to ban the “OneLove” armband that many European captains had been hoping to wear in Qatar.

It was a game that produced another World Cup shock as Japan came from behind to win 2-1.

Before the tournament, captains from England, Wales, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany and Denmark had planned to wear the armbands at the World Cup – – which features a striped heart in different colors to represent all heritages, backgrounds, genders and sexual identities – before FIFA made it clear on Monday players would be yellow carded.

On Wednesday, the German Football Federation (DFB) released a series of tweets shortly after the game had kicked off indicating that FIFA had prevented them from using their voices to speak up at the World Cup for issues they felt passionate about, hence the protest.

“We wanted to use our captain’s armband to take a stand for values that we hold in the Germany national team: diversity and mutual respect,” the DFB said. “Together with other nations, we wanted our voice to be heard.

“It wasn’t about making a political statement – human rights are non-negotiable. That should be taken for granted, but it still isn’t the case. That’s why this message is so important to us.

“Denying us the armband is the same as denying us a voice,’ added the DFB. “We stand by our position.”

CNN has contacted FIFA for comment.

Prior to countries announcing their captains would not wear the armband in Qatar, FIFA had brought forward its own “No Discrimination” campaign and said all 32 captains would have the opportunity to wear an armband linked to the campaign.

Germany fan Nick Boettcher told CNN that it was “sad” that FIFA had taken the stance to deny players the opportunity to wear the armband.

“FIFA is making a lot of questionable decisions and so it’s good that people speak up,” said Boettcher. “I’m very proud that they did that. People will talk about this for sure, and the attention will grow. The pressure on FIFA and Qatar is definitely increasing.”

England fan Samir Cordell told CNN inside that stadium that he was “over the moon” with the protest.

“Germany and the German fans should be proud,” he said. “I’m an England fan and I didn’t like seeing England not wearing the armband. I would have loved to see Harry Kane wear it and get the booking. I think it’s great, I think it’s fantastic. Hats off to them.”

A handful of the starting 11 for Germany, including Manuel Neuer, Thomas Müller and İlkay Gündoğan, wore rainbow flags on their boots.

Germany’s protest comes after both Kane and Wales’ Gareth Bale took to the field on Monday in their respective games without the “OneLove” rainbow armband. Germany captain Manuel Neuer also did not wear the armband on Wednesday.

While Neuer chose not to wear the armband, Germany’s interior minister Nancy Faeser was seen with it on her arm while in attendance for the team’s game against Japan.

In a tweet, Faeser posted a picture of herself with the armband while in the stands, in what appeared to be a show of solidarity with the national team.

Before the game, Faeser had criticized FIFA, slamming the threat of sanctions for wearing the armband.

“This is not alright, how federations are being put under pressure,” she said during a visit to a German FA event, according to Reuters.

“In today’s times it is incomprehensible that FIFA does not want people to openly stand for tolerance and against discrimination. It does not fit in our times and it is not appropriate towards people.”

In the buildup to the World Cup, Qatar – where sex between men is illegal and punishable by up to three years in prison in the country – has come under criticism for its stance on LGBTQ rights.

A report from Human Rights Watch, published last month, documented cases as recently as September of Qatari security forces arbitrarily arresting LGBT people and subjecting them to “ill-treatment in detention.”

However, the country has insisted that “everyone is welcome” at the tournament, adding in a statement to CNN this month that “our track record has shown that we have warmly welcomed all people regardless of background.”

And since the beginning of the tournament, some people attending World Cup matches in Qatar have said they have experienced difficulties when trying to enter stadiums wearing clothing in support of LGBTQ rights.

At the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium on Monday, ahead of the United States Men’s National Team’s (USMNT) match with Wales, US football journalist Grant Wahl and former Wales captain Laura McAllister both said they had been told to remove rainbow-colored items of clothing by security staff.

Red Sox Acquire Versatile Infielder In Trade With Pirates

The Boston Red Sox made their first real move of the offseason Wednesday by signing a relief pitcher, but they weren’t done there.

The Red Sox also pulled off a trade later in the day, acquiring infielder Hoy Park from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for 18-year-old left-handed pitcher Inmer Lobo. The 26-year-old Park was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Tuesday.

Park played in 23 games for the Pirates this past season, batting .216 (11-for-51) with two home runs and six RBIs. While obviously not displaying the most potent of bats, Park showcased his versatility as a defender by starting games at second base, third base and shortstop. Park also has experience playing in the outfield as he earned 12 starts on the grass over the past two seasons.

Park made his major league debut with the Yankees in 2021 before New York dealt him away as part of a mid-season trade that year to the Pirates for Clay Holmes.

Lobo, a 6-foot-1, 193-pound hurler from Venezuela, pitched for the Red Sox in the Dominican Summer League, posting a 2-0 record in five starts along with a 0.82 ERA. He also struck out 28 batters in 22 innings pitched.

Packers’ Aaron Rodgers confirms right thumb is broken

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Aaron Rodgers never felt the need to get into details about his right thumb injury for one reason: It was never going to keep the Green Bay Packers quarterback from playing.

That’s why it wasn’t until Wednesday when he finally — and reluctantly — confirmed that it was indeed broken.

“It doesn’t make a difference with me playing,” Rodgers said. “It doesn’t make a difference. You saw the tape on my thumb. Didn’t make a difference.”

Rodgers has been dealing with the injury since he was sacked by Giants linebacker Oshane Ximines on the final play of the Packers’ Oct. 9 game in London. Rodgers attempted a Hail Mary, but Ximines hit Rodgers’ throwing arm and forced a fumble. Immediately after the play, Rodgers came up flexing his right hand.

Rodgers was asked specifically on Oct. 26 if his thumb was broken. He replied at the time: “My thumb is hurt.”

Even when Pat McAfee asked Rodgers on Tuesday during his weekly appearance on McAfee’s show if the thumb was broken, Rodgers just said he had played with broken fingers before without elaborating on this injury specifically.

“I think I’ve had worse injuries I’ve played with,” Rodgers said Wednesday. “Definitely a challenge, but the days off helped. Feeling better this week.”

He was back at practice Wednesday after an extended break following the Packers’ loss to the Titans last Thursday, when Rodgers’ accuracy was perhaps at its worst. He missed throws at critical times in the second half to Allen Lazard and Sammy Watkins that he described as passes he’d complete 99 times out of 100. Still, he insisted the thumb injury had nothing to do with those misses.

“There’s one in every 100 that doesn’t come off the right way,” Rodgers said.

When asked whether he’s just saying that because he doesn’t want to sound like he’s using the thumb as an excuse, Rodgers said: “I think it’s the truth. My thumb was hurting a lot worse in the Dallas game, and I put the ball where I wanted to.”

Indeed, Rodgers had pinpoint accuracy just five days earlier in a win over the Cowboys. As a whole, however, Rodgers’ accuracy numbers have been down since the injury. He completed 69.7% of his passes with eight touchdowns and three interceptions in the first five games of the season with the Packers at 3-2. In the next six, of which the Packers have won only one, his completion rate dropped to 62% with 11 touchdowns and four interceptions.

However, Rodgers said he has had other injuries that have impacted his ability to throw more than this one.

“When I hurt my knee in ’18, you throw from the ground up, so that was definitely difficult on the footwork, plant leg,” Rodgers said. “When I broke my index finger in college, that was probably a slightly more important finger to deal with. I remember I was at practice and Coach Tedford said, ‘I don’t care what’s hurting, you’ve got one day off and if you miss another day of practice, you’re the backup again.’ So there was no choice.”

Unlike Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, who needed his fractured thumb surgically repaired earlier this season and missed five games, Rodgers said surgery was never considered and won’t be needed after the season unless something else happens.

“I don’t know what [Prescott] had, but it probably wasn’t,” Rodgers said when asked if his injury was as severe.

Rodgers and the Packers had five days off before they returned to the practice field on Wednesday to prepare for Sunday’s game at the Philadelphia Eagles.

“I hope it helped his thumb,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said. At 4-7, the Packers can ill afford many more — if any — losses and still have a chance to make the postseason. Some have likened this to the 2016 season, when the Packers were 4-6 and heading to Philadelphia when Rodgers said he thought they could “run the table.”

However, the Eagles team Rodgers & Co. faced six years ago was 5-5. This one is 9-1.

“I feel confident we’re going to go out and play well,” Rodgers said. “But I don’t think this is the last stand.”

Saleh insists Zach Wilson’s Jets career is ‘not over’ as he benches misfiring QB | New York Jets

Zach Wilson has gone from being the future of the New York Jets franchise to an underachieving benchwarmer.

Coach Robert Saleh announced the decision on Wednesday to sit Wilson and replace him with Mike White as the starting quarterback on Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

“Zach’s career here is not over,” Saleh said, adding that the plan is to have the second-year quarterback “reset” with the hope Wilson plays again this season. “This is not putting a nail in his coffin.”

Joe Flacco will serve as White’s backup, and Wilson will not be active against the Bears.

“We haven’t wavered in our belief that he’s going to be the future of this franchise,” Saleh said.

Saleh didn’t commit Monday to having Wilson under center this week after the second-year quarterback’s dismal performance in the Jets’ 10-3 loss to the Patriots in New England. The No 2 overall pick in the draft last year was 9 of 22 for a measly 77 yards with several wayward throws. The Jets managed just two total yards on seven possessions in the second half.

Many Jets fans wanted their team to draft Justin Fields instead of Wilson in 2021. Fields eventually fell to the Bears at No 11, and has been in impressive form this season, making plays in the rushing and passing game.

Saleh said he’ll evaluate the quarterback position on a day-to-day basis, and added the entire offense must be better.

“His decision-making has been fine, his practice habits and all that stuff have been fine,” Saleh said of Wilson. “But there are some basic fundamental things that have gotten really out of whack for him. This is just an opportunity for him to sit back, focus on those things, find a way to reconnect with all the different things we fell in love with during the draft process. And it’s something I feel he’s going to be able to do.”

Wilson has taken a lot of criticism this week not only for his play on the field, but how he handled his postgame news conference. When asked if he thought he and the offense let down the defense which sacked Mac Jones six times Wilson replied curtly: “No. No.”

It appeared to be a lack of accountability and rubbed some inside the Jets’ locker room the wrong way. Rookie wide receiver Garrett Wilson vented after the game, without using names, saying the offense had a “sorry” performance and “hopefully, this is a wakeup for some people in the facility.”

Saleh acknowledged there might have been “a little irritation,” but insisted Zach Wilson’s comments had no bearing on the decision.

On Wednesday, the quarterback said he regretted his comments at the weekend and had apologized to his teammates. He also said he understood the criticism that has come his way.

“It’s deserved,” Wilson said of the criticism. “The way that I handled the situation wasn’t right. I’ve got to be a better football player and then I’ve got to be a better leader for these guys. I have an opportunity to turn the page here as a player and a leader.”

Saleh’s lack of commitment on Monday to Wilson remaining the starter was the first time the Jets pivoted on their public support of the young QB. The main focus for the franchise this season has been Wilson’s continued development.

Wilson is 5-2 this season as the starter of the Jets, who are off to a surprising 6-4 start and in the middle of the playoff hunt. But he has struggled with consistency and not shown the progress expected of him. Wilson has just four touchdown passes and five interceptions in seven starts.

“I’ve got to do a better job for him,” offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur said. “I’ve got to do a better job for the offense.”

Flacco, who started the first three games while Wilson was sidelined with a knee injury, still leads the Jets with five TD throws despite not having played since 25 September. Flacco was dropped to No 3 behind White on the team’s depth chart a few weeks ago.

“He’s more than capable of getting it done,” LaFleur said of White.

White briefly became a bit of a folk hero for the Jets last season during a four-game stretch that included three starts and one that landed his jersey and a game ball in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Making his first NFL start against Cincinnati on 31 October 2021, in place of an injured Wilson, White completed 37 of 45 passes for 405 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions in a 34-31 victory.

White, a fifth-round pick by Dallas in 2018 out of Western Kentucky, joined Cam Newton (2011) as the only players since 1950 to pass for at least 400 yards in their first career start. White’s 37 completions were the most by a player in his first start.

He injured his right forearm early in his next start and was forced out of the Jets’ 45-30 loss at Indianapolis. White made the start in New York’s next game against Buffalo, but was intercepted four times in the 45-17 defeat. He hasn’t taken a snap in a regular-season game since.

Rangers trade Ryan Reaves to Wild: Why the forward is a good fit for Minnesota

The New York Rangers have traded forward Ryan Reaves to the Wild in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, Minnesota announced Tuesday. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Reaves has played in 12 games for the Rangers this season.
  • The Wild are having trouble generating offense and finding lineup fits amid an 8-8-2 start to the season.
  • While Reaves is not expected to provide a big offense boost, both he and general manager Bill Guerin agree the forward brings something the team needs, “energy” and “swagger.”
  • Guerin said Reaves will make his Wild debut Friday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Athletic’s instant analysis:

Backstory

Reaves has been a healthy scratch in eight of New York’s last nine games and the Rangers needed to start collecting cap space, so he was likely going to be waived if they couldn’t find a trade. He was well-liked in the dressing room, but there was just no room for him in the lineup. — Staple

Why Reaves is a good fit for Minnesota

As The Athletic has reported for two weeks, Guerin had been pursuing Reaves in order to bulk up the bottom six and start winning some board battles. Reaves is still one of the toughest — if not the toughest — man in hockey and the Wild are one of the most undersized, least physical teams in hockey. They’ve lost a lot of board battles this season and rank 24th in hits per 60 minutes at 21.29. Since entering the NHL in 2010-11, Reaves ranks third among active players in hits (2,645) and sixth in penalty minutes (992).

According to hockeyfights.com, Reaves has also gotten into 78 fights in his NHL career, including one with Marcus Foligno on the Wild’s opening night. — Russo

What they’re saying

“No GM’s ever traded for me because they needed goals or points. I bring energy, I bring physical play, I bring swagger. I look forward to bringing that in Minny. I’m excited. They had a good run last year, they’re a good team, just fell short,” Reaves told The Athletic.

Guerin told The Athletic that acquiring Reaves was “not for the fighting.” Instead, Guerin said the gritty forward was brought in for other attributes.

“He’s a biiiiigggg personality. He’s got a lot of energy. He’s got swagger. We’ve been missing that,” Guerin said. “The energy he brings is really good. And size. He’s gonna help us get our identity back.”

“Obviously a competitor and very tough. Also has been on a lot of experienced playoff teams. He knows the grind and can bring that energy,” Foligno said to The Athletic in a text message.

Jiri Prochazka out of UFC 282, vacates title; Magomed Ankalaev vs. Jan Blachowicz new main event

Jiri Prochazka’s rematch with Glover Teixeira will not take place at UFC 282 after Prochazka suffered “a shoulder injury that will require a significant rehabilitation period,” the UFC announced on Wednesday following an initial report from Yahoo! Sports.

As a result of the scratch, Prochazka has vacated the UFC light heavyweight title and the UFC has promoted a light heavyweight fight between ex-champ Jan Blachowicz and Magomed Ankaleav to the main event of the Dec. 10 pay-per-view, which takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The UFC is offering refunds to ticketholders of the original main event.

“Out of respect to the athletes and the division, Prochazka has elected to vacate his title and will compete for the belt as soon as he is medically cleared,” the UFC stated in a prepared release sent to MMA Fighting.

According to ESPN.com, the nature of the injury could possibly require up to one year of recovery time. A person close to Prochazka, who declined to be named publicly due to the sensitivity of the fighter’s situation, confirmed the injury was to the now ex-champ’s shoulder. The person said the injury will require surgery and added it “will be a long road back unfortunately.”

MMA Fighting was not immediately able to reach Teixeira for comment on the shakeup.

The reportedly former light heavyweight champ was set to make his first title defense in a rematch of a “Fight of the Year” candidate against ex-champ Teixeira, who lost via fifth-round submission in their first meeting, a back-and-forth slugfest in June at UFC 275.

The Blachowicz vs. Ankalaev matchup put the winner in prime position to vie for the title. Blachowicz, who ceded the belt to Teixeira in 2021, called out Prochazka immediately after the Czech fighter’s title win. But the new champ decided instead to run back his fight with Teixeira, wanting to correct what he felt was his worst career performance.

Below is the UFC’s full statement on Prochazka’s injury and the new UFC 282 main event:

UFC light heavyweight champion Jiri Prochazka has suffered a shoulder injury that will require a significant rehabilitation period. Out of respect to the athletes and the division, Prochazka has elected to vacate his title and will compete for the belt as soon as he is medically cleared.

As a result, the new UFC 282 main event will see former champion and No. 2 ranked Jan Blachowicz take on surging No. 3 ranked Magomed Ankalaev for the vacant, undisputed UFC light heavyweight championship.

A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt with legendary knockout power, Blachowicz has finished four of his last six wins in emphatic fashion and looks to recapture his lost crown with another signature victory. Ankalaev is currently riding the second-longest win streak in UFC light heavyweight history with nine victories, including five via finish, and plans to extend his streak by claiming his first UFC title.

Due to a change in the main event, refunds will be available at point of sale. UFC 282: BLACHOWICZ vs ANKALAEV takes place Saturday, December 10 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

MLB rumors: Aaron Judge meets with Giants, could get offer soon; Red Sox sign lefty reliever

The Thanksgiving holiday is upon us but that doesn’t mean hot stove activity will slow to a crawl. Plenty of signings and trades have been finalized during the long holiday weekend over the years and this offseason figures to be no different. Here are Wednesday’s hot stove rumors as you await Turkey Day.

Judge meets with Giants

Aaron Judge, the No. 1 available free agent, met with Giants representatives in San Francisco on Tuesday, including members of ownership, reports MLB Network’s Jon Morosi. Morosi anticipates a formal offer could come later this week and that Judge could sign by the end of the Winter Meetings in two weeks. To date Judge has only met with the Giants and, of course, the Yankees.

For what it’s worth, Giants outfielder Joc Pederson is doing his part to recruit the reigning AL MVP:

Let it be known the Giants will open the 2023 regular season in New York against the Yankees. Pretty good chance Judge will be at Yankee Stadium on Opening Day next season. Which uniform will he be wearing? We’ll find out soon enough.

Yankees looking for bullpen help

In addition to trying to retain Judge, the Yankees are also seeking bullpen help, GM Brian Cashman told NJ.com. “I’m looking to improve our bullpen, but yeah, I believe we have a closer. That doesn’t mean we can’t play on someone who is a quote-unquote closer because ultimately the more the merrier. You want as many high-leverage guys that you can collect as you possibly can,” Cashman said.

The closer Cashman is referring to is All-Star Clay Holmes, who struggled in August and September and missed the end of the regular season with a shoulder injury. He returned in October and was lights out, though he was used carefully. This is New York’s bullpen at the moment:

King could be ready in time for spring training and, if he is, it likely pushes Abreu off the roster or Schmidt to Triple-A. The Yankees have a steady high-leverage group — Holmes, Loáisiga, and Peralta were all great in October — but there’s no such thing as too many quality relievers. With King’s status uncertain and Effross set to miss 2023, looking for more bullpen help is sensible.

Rangers a serious suitor for Rodón

The Rangers are a major player for free agent lefty Carlos Rodón, reports MLB.com. Texas has already added Jake Odorizzi and retained Martín Pérez this offseason, though they’re expected to pursue a top of the rotation starter as well, and Rodón is one of the best available. Our R.J. Anderson ranked the southpaw the No. 8 available free agent this offseason.

At the moment, Odorizzi and Pérez are penciled into the rotation alongside Jon Gray and likely Dane Dunning. Internal candidates for the No. 5 spot include Glenn Otto, Cole Ragans, and maybe Spencer Howard. Clearly, there is room for improvement there. The Rangers want to sign a frontline starter to help them contend and also push the kids down a peg on the depth chart.

Red Sox sign Rodríguez

The Red Sox have signed lefty reliever Joely Rodríguez to a one-year contract with a club option, the team announced Wednesday. He will earn $1.5 million in 2023 with a $500,000 buyout of a $4.25 million option, according to The Athletic. The 31-year-old southpaw was slightly more effective against righties (.625 OPS) than lefties (.645 OPS) this season. Rodríguez and Josh Taylor, who did not pitch in the big leagues due to injury in 2022, figure to be manager Alex Cora’s two lefty relievers next season.

Spain 7-0 Costa Rica summary: score, goals, highlights | Qatar World Cup 2022

Luis Enrique: We were exceptional but we still have room for improvement

Spain head coach Luis Enrique was understandably delighted with his team’s display and was full of praise for debutant Alejandro Balde, goalscorer Marco Asensio and Rodri, who played in an unfamiliar central defensive role:

“When things work out exactly as you’d hoped, it’s an amazing feeling. We were exceptional in our control of the ball and at stopping them from causing us problems.”

“Our objective in every single game is to dominate the game and to do that, you have to have the ball. We want our opponents to find it hard to play against us and get frustrated. Our pressing was so good today too. But we still have room for improvement.

“We know that Rodri has the skillset to play in central defence. He’s a complete player, which makes his very versatile. I’m lucky to have so many players that can play different roles and make a big contribution.”

“I don’t like playing with the same team in every game. We’re not here to just play with 11 players. I don’t think I’ve ever named an unchanged team.”

“We want to have lots of positivity around the team, which is great but tomorrow we’ll start thinking about the Germany game. We’re not going to win every game by such a big margin.”

“It was the perfect moment to give Balde his debut. It was good to give Alba, and Busquets too, a rest. We’ve not had much time to work with Balde but he was flying.”

Asensio was incredible. He’s full of confidence, his all-round play was fantastic. He’s a top player.”

Croatia vs. Morocco, Germany vs. Japan, Spain vs. Costa Rica, Belgium vs. Canada

Groups E and F get underway on Wednesday as Spain, Germany and Belgium play their first matches of the tournament. Spain and Germany were heavy favorites to advance out of Group E, but the Germans didn’t do their part early Wednesday, losing to Japan in stunning fashion. Belgium, meanwhile, takes on Canada in the Canadians’ first World Cup game since 1986.

Spain vs. Costa Rica

11 a.m. ET Wednesday, Fox

This is a game that’s going to be played primarily in Costa Rica’s half of the field and it’s not an exaggeration to say that Spain could have 75% of the possession. It’s going to be all about how Spain breaks down a Costa Rica team that will be content to put all 11 outfield players behind the ball and hit on the counter and on set pieces whenever possible. Under 2.5 goals at +115 feels worth it.

Belgium vs. Canada

2 p.m. ET Wednesday, Fox

Belgium will be without Romelu Lukaku after he was ruled out for the start of the tournament. But there’s still plenty of midfield and attacking talent in the side and Belgium has the best player in the tournament in Kevin De Bruyne. It won’t be surprising if Canada gets a result here, but we’ll take the favorites.
