Walt Anderson on reversal of Hunter Henry touchdown: Ball touched ground and player lost control

With Thursday night’s game tied at 23, the Patriots had the ball at the Minnesota six. It was third and goal.

Tight end Hunter Henry caught the ball at the goal line and reached it across before hitting the ground. He lost possession of the ball and then finished the catch in the field of play.

The official near the action ruled that it was a touchdown. The question on replay review became whether Henry kept possession after hitting the ground. NFL senior V.P. of officiating Walt Anderson, who handles all replay-review questions, ruled that the ball struck the ground when Henry landed, making it an incomplete pass.

After the game, Patriots coach Bill Belichick told reporters, “Why don’t you guys go to them with your pool reporter and ask them about the play? Isn’t that what you do?”

Indeed it is. And indeed they did.

Here’s how Anderson explained the decision to pool reporter Mike Reiss of ESPN.com: “He was going to the ground, the ball ended up touching the ground and then he lost control of the ball in his hands.”

Why wasn’t Henry ruled to have possession before the ball hit the ground?

“Because as he’s going to the ground, he has to maintain control of the ball upon contacting the ground,” Anderson said. “The term that’s commonly used is ‘surviving the ground.’ A lot of people refer to that. So, as he’s going to the ground, he has the elements of two feet and control, but because he’s going to the ground, he has to maintain control of the ball when he does go to the ground.”

As Reiss pointed out to Anderson, Henry had two hands on the ball.

“Well, if he had maintained control of the ball with two hands, even if the ball were to touch the ground, if you don’t lose control of the ball after it touches the ground, that would still be a catch.”

The decision raises an interesting question as to the application of the “clear and obvious” standard. The ruling on the field was a catch for a touchdown. For replay review, here’s the proper question: Was the ruling on the field clearly and obviously wrong?

There are two separate components to the “clear and obvious” standard in this case. It was indeed clear and obvious that Henry lost possession when he landed and re-secured possession short of the end zone. That would have given New England the ball on the one-inch line, fourth and goal.

But was it clear and obvious that the ball struck the ground and moved sufficiently to make it not a catch at all?

Remember, reversals are supposed to happen only when it’s clear and obvious. Fifty drunks in a bar would have to agree, as it’s often described.

In this case, it seems clear and obvious that it wasn’t a touchdown. But it doesn’t seem clear and obvious that it wasn’t a catch; Henry’s hand was at all times under the ball. Thus, New England arguably should have had the ball just outside the Minnesota end zone, fourth and goal.

While it’s possible that the Patriots would have opted for the field goal and the 26-23 lead, the Patriots may have chosen to try to punch it in for a touchdown. If the process had been true to the “50 drunks in a bar” standard, the Patriots should have had that option.

Ole Miss’ Lane Kiffin says he expects to return as Rebels coach

Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin said he anticipates staying with the Rebels in 2023, even if Auburn offers him the chance to fill its head-coaching vacancy.

Kiffin was asked about his status after Thursday’s 24-22 home loss to Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl, Ole Miss’ third consecutive defeat to end the regular season. Kiffin, who is in his third year as Rebels coach, has been viewed as one of Auburn’s top candidates to replace Bryan Harsin, who was fired Oct. 31.

“Yes, I do,” Kiffin said Thursday when asked if he expects to return to Ole Miss next season.

Sources told ESPN’s Chris Low that Kiffin met Tuesday with Ole Miss players and told them he hasn’t accepted a job at any other school. WCBI-TV in Columbus, Mississippi, reported Monday that Kiffin planned to step down Friday and take the Auburn job. Kiffin denied the report.

Asked after Thursday’s loss about signing a new contract extension at Ole Miss, Kiffin noted that he had signed several with the school and has been more focused on the Mississippi State game. In December 2021, he received an enhanced contract with Ole Miss that increased his salary to $7.25 million this year.

If Kiffin indeed passes on Auburn, Liberty coach Hugh Freeze is likely to be pursued by the school. Freeze is 34-14 at Liberty after coaching Ole Miss from 2012 to 2017, and going 39-25.

Kiffin is 23-12 at Ole Miss and 18-7 the past two seasons.

Brazil’s Richarlison scores highlight reel goal in World Cup win

LUSAIL, Qatar — Just when you might sit there and start to wonder if the idea of Brazil exceeds the reality, if the anticipation of beautiful soccer often seems to fade to the sight of a grind, the Brazilians might remind you they’re always capable of something that’ll make your eyes just about pop out of your head.

That’s what happened Thursday night, when the goal of this nascent World Cup graced Lusail Stadium two days after the upset of the ages did likewise. Where on Tuesday there had been Saudi Arabia over Argentina, now there came the spectacle on 73 minutes in Brazil over Serbia. It cemented Brazil’s 2-0 opening win. It came from Richarlison, the 25-year-old who has been doing a lot of scoring lately. It made people gasp and maybe even holler involuntarily.

It wreaked a stadium noise that carried the unmistakable sound of wonder and sustained itself longer than most such noises do. It sent Tite, the longtime Brazil manager, into a lovable frenzy as he went up to group-hug his staff, saying later, “Sometimes feelings can’t be explained.” And it lent the postgame concourses the kind of lingering buzz one cannot attain from the nonalcoholic beer they serve in these stadiums here.

“I think it was a beautiful goal,” Richarlison said of his bicycle whirl from amid the box. He mentioned previous and similar goals with the Fluminense club in Brazil and Everton in England and said: “Today I had the opportunity to make an acrobatic goal that was very, very nice, I think one of the nicest in my career. It was a very tough match for us, so I think it was one of the best goals I ever scored.”

He has scored 88 in club play, 19 in international play and two of those 19 on Thursday night, so it’s a mass of goals to assess. “As our professor, Tite, says, ‘You are smelling goal,’ ” Richarlison said. “And that’s what happens.” It brought reward to those who had traveled to the stadium in anticipation of beauty while filling the spotless new metro cars and shiny new metro stations with that old, reliable, electric yellow.

What they saw and surely assessed on the way home in Portuguese and a heap of other languages even managed to overshadow something hard to overshadow. Neymar, Brazil’s most recognizable figure, nowadays 30 and Paris-based, took a bummer of an ankle injury in the second half, played 11 more minutes before his manager realized it, earned his manager’s praise for his pain tolerance and became the subject of a news conference appearance by a team doctor, who said it’s too early to tell much.

“We are confident that Neymar will continue playing,” Tite said. “He will continue playing in the World Cup.” If so, he could help steer Brazil’s bid for a first World Cup title in a yawning 20 years, as well as pursue the record for Brazil goals held by Pele at 77, with Neymar at 75. If not, well, other stars do exist with electric skill in electric yellow, and both goals Thursday did go on merry treks through Vinicius Junior to Richarlison.

That one happened at 62 minutes, when Vinicius Junior, the 22-year-old marvel of energy and precision and Real Madrid employment, corralled a ball of which Neymar had lost track on the left edge of the box and banged it suddenly to the goal, where keeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic sprawled to save it before Richarlison poked it in easily.

That made it 1-0, and that wasn’t what people will carry in the memory banks.

The unforgettable one came 11 minutes later, and it hinged upon Vinicius Junior’s creation yet again. He operated from the left wing, of course, and this time he slid a seeing-eye ball through a tight corridor of human obstacles. It found its way through to Richarlison amid the box, and then came the whoa.

Richarlison fielded it with his left foot and ticked it airborne. Then he whirled around, twirled his body and bicycled it right-footed. It seared maybe not even an inch over the left shoulder of Serbian defender Milos Velijkovic, as Richarlison’s flying, flailing boot nearly nudged Velijkovic’s head. It kept its screaming line and hurried in just inside the left post, with Milinkovic-Savic as helpless in his late lurch as would have been any of the 8 billion earthlings. For the second time in a brief spell, the entire Brazilian team massed in the corner for a heaving celebration.

“It goes up,” Tite said of the ball, “and he reschedules all his plan,” and what adept plan-reschedulers they are.

The starriest of the World Cup star teams, Brazil, finally had debuted at this 22nd men’s World Cup, the 22nd for which Brazil has qualified. It had become the last of the bigwigs to start in this World Cup of the odd positioning on the calendar. Its fans from around the world, abundant times abundant, had arrived with their singsong loudness in the usual outpouring of can’t-wait. With a few Serbians in red and blue mixed in, they had emptied out toward Lusail Stadium, the futuristic structure that by night kind of resembles a lit-up soap dish.

They saw Brazil, the tournament favorite sort of by default, slog around some with a more-than-capable Serbia through a first half without many wows. “During the break,” said Tite, the 61-year-old who has managed Brazil since 2016, “I needed to tell my players to calm down, because first we need to have a [lightness] that we needed to pass the ball.”

He said, “We needed to lower the adrenaline.”

They made tweaks in positioning, and soon, said assistant Cleber Xavier, “We continued to expand the speed, expand the movements and create opportunity,” whereupon they created wonder.

Group G had left the starting gate with the Brazilians tied with the Swiss at three points, and Richarlison declared “a wonderful night” with “a beautiful victory” so that “now we have another six games to reach our goal,” but first he would check on Neymar back at the hotel. Serbia, which had won its group in qualifying, “was always a lot of pressure” in the match, Tite said, “so it did require a lot from us.” All of it made a primo start toward Brazil’s bid to hike its record total of five World Cup titles to six, and reminded in one gasping swoop that the reality of Brazil at times does measure up to the idea.

The Patriots and Vikings have one half of football in the books as these two clubs cap off the NFL’s Thanksgiving Day triple-header. At the break, the teams were knotted at 16 apiece. 

After being held to field goals in Week 11, both of these offenses wasted no time getting the end zone to begin this game. Minnesota needed just eight plays to travel 80 yards to score a touchdown on the opening drive of the game. Then, New England matched that score with one of their own as Mac Jones connected with Nelson Agholor for a 34-yard score. 

From there, these offenses traded field goals before Kirk Cousins connected with T.J. Hockenson for a touchdown just before halftime. With around 90-seconds left, the Patriots were able to knot the game with a last-second field goal.

National Dog Show: French Bulldog wins top prize

Who’s a good boy? This year, it’s Winston.

Winston the French Bulldog won Best in Show, the top spot, at this year’s 21st Annual National Dog Show presented by Purina. Winston is the first French Bulldog to ever win the competition’s top prize.

“They have cornered the market on energy, enthusiasm and just pure spunk,” show host John O’Hurley said of Winston and his handler, Perry Payson.

Winston beat out hundreds of dogs to win Thursday’s prize. The Kennel Club of Philadelphia’s dog show airs every Thanksgiving following the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and is the most-watched dog show in the country. The dogs sometimes train for years in an effort to win the national title.

Last year, Claire – a Scottish Deerhound – made history as the first dog to win the top title two years in a row.

Every year, the dogs compete against other dogs in their breed to determine the best in breed. Then, all those winners compete against each other at the group stage – Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding. The seven very best dogs in their group then compete to win best in show.

This year is the first to feature the Mudi and Russian Toy, two newly recognized breeds.

But this isn’t Winston’s first bout with fame: He also competed in the Westminster Dog show earlier this year.

Iranian soccer player Voria Ghafouri arrested amid World Cup scrutiny

A prominent Iranian soccer player was arrested Thursday on charges that included destroying the reputation of the country’s national team, which is competing in the World Cup, state-linked Iranian media outlets reported Thursday.

The player, Voria Ghafouri, is a former member of Iran’s national squad and a frequent critic of the government. His arrest occurred at a moment in which Iranian soccer players are under close scrutiny for their statements about a nationwide uprising in Iran that has continued for months.

Iran’s World Cup team silently nods to protests at home

Iran’s national team, during a match against England on Monday, declined to sing during the playing of the country’s national anthem, in what was widely seen as a silent acknowledgment of the protests. Iran’s national broadcaster showed select images of spectators cheering for Iran during the match but not the political signs carried by some.

Protest in Iran began in September after a young Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, died in police custody. The uprising against Iran’s clerical leadership has spread across the country and sparked a fierce and deadly crackdown, including in ethnic Kurdish areas, where human rights groups say dozens of people have been killed in recent days.

The U.N. Human Rights Council in a vote on Thursday launched an investigation into alleged rights violations in Iran’s response to the protest movement. “Today’s session leaves no doubt that the HRC’s membership recognizes the gravity of the situation in Iran, and the fact-finding mission established today will help ensure that those engaged in the ongoing violent suppression of Iranian people are identified and their actions documented,” U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.

Rights groups say Iran is escalating crackdown in Kurdish areas

Ghafouri, who is Kurdish, has criticized government officials on social media in the past, and recently posted messages on Twitter condemning the killing of Kurds. Iranian news reports did not specify the reasons for his arrest but said the charges included “spreading propaganda against” the Islamic republic.

He has been called up to play several times over the last decade on the national team, and played for several Iranian club teams including Foolad Khuzestan, his current squad. ISNA, a semiofficial news agency, reported Thursday that Hamidreza Garshasbi, the CEO of the team, had resigned, and said the reason for the his resignation had not yet been announced.

Even before the start of the World Cup, some Iranians had called for FIFA, soccer’s global governing body, to ban the national team, known as Team Melli, as a sign of support for the protests. Others argued that Iran attending the World Cup was a boon to the uprising: a high-profile event that provided players and spectators an opportunity to voice dissent, with international media watching.

Iran is set to play Wales on Friday.

Cowboys vs. Giants score: Live updates, game stats, highlights, analysis for NFC East bout on Thanksgiving

Sandwiched between two other Thanksgiving games is our Texas-sized matchup between the Cowboys and Giants. This is a rematch of what was a highly competitive Week 3 matchup that saw Dallas prevail after Trevon Diggs clinched the Cowboys’ 23-16 win with a late interception. 

Both teams enter Thursday’s game with playoff aspirations. Dallas (7-3) is currently the fifth-seeded team in the NFC standings, while New York (7-3) would face the 49ers in the wild-card round if the playoffs started today. Both teams are trying to stay within striking distance of the one-loss Eagles for first place in the NFC East division. 

Fans will be treated to a star-studded matchup befitting a Thanksgiving Day game. The big matchup to watch today will be Daniel Jones and the Giants’ offense against the Cowboys’ top-ranked scoring defense. Jones will certainly lean on running back Saquon Barkley, who is just 47 yards from his third 1,000-yard rushing season and first since 2019. Jones will try to avoid throwing in the direction of Diggs and Defensive Player of the Year candidate Micah Parsons.

World Cup 2022 highlights: Richarlison, Brazil top Serbia, 2-0

The 2022 FIFA World Cup continued Thursday with Brazil shutting out Serbia, 2-0, at Lusail Stadium in Qatar. Richarlison’s fancy footwork earned Brazil three points in Group G and extended its World Cup winning streak.

Earlier, Portugal narrowly outlasted Ghana, 3-2, to pick up three points in Group H. Elsewhere, Switzerland earned three points in Group G after defeating Cameroon, 1-0, while Uruguay and South Korea battled to a scoreless draw in the day’s second match. Both squads grabbed one points in Group H for their efforts.

Setting the stage

Group G was back at the forefront Thursday, as the No. 1 team in the world took the field. Entering Thursday’s match, Brazil was 73-18-18 all-time in the World Cup and had more tournament appearances than any nation (22), including this year.

The Seleção have arguably the most talented roster in the tournament this year, headlined by Paris Saint-Germain superstar Neymar, who is one of FOX Bet’s favorites to win this year’s Golden Boot.

On the other side, Serbia entered Thursday’s match 18-20-8 all-time in the World Cup (including participation as Yugoslavia). It was the team’s 13th tournament appearance and second straight.

Lakers’ Patrick Beverley suspended 3 games for shoving incident

Los Angeles Lakers guard Patrick Beverley has been suspended three games for “forcefully shoving” Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton when the big man wasn’t looking and causing him to fall to the court in L.A.’s game against the Suns on Tuesday, the NBA announced on Thursday.

In the league’s statement, attributed to executive vice president and head of basketball operations Joe Dumars, the suspension was explained as being “based in part on Beverley’s history of unsportsmanlike acts.”

The suspension is without pay and will cost Beverley $268,965 in salary, per ESPN’s front-office insider Bobby Marks.

Beverley will miss the Lakers’ back-to-back road games against the San Antonio Spurs on Friday and Saturday and also their home game Monday against the Indiana Pacers.

Beverley was assessed a technical foul and ejected for charging into Ayton after Ayton was standing over Lakers swingman Austin Reaves, while Reaves was on the floor following a flagrant foul by Suns guard Devin Booker. The sequence occurred with 3:55 remaining in the fourth quarter of the Lakers’ 115-105 loss in Phoenix.

Following the game, Beverley said he was “for sure” concerned that the league would discipline him for his actions and added that he would accept the punishment that was meted out.

“Very unprofessional by myself. Definitely could have reacted in a different way,” he said. “So, yeah, I’m a big boy. I’ll take my lumps however they come.”

However, shortly before the suspension was announced on Thanksgiving afternoon, Beverley tweeted with a different tone.

Prior to Tuesday’s incident, in the 2021 Western Conference finals and with the Suns on the verge of beating the L.A. Clippers for a trip to the championship round, Beverley — then with the Clips — pushed Suns guard Chris Paul in the back.

Beverley is averaging 4.1 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 14 starts for the Lakers. He is shooting career lows from the field (26.6%) and the 3-point line (23.8%).

Portugal vs. Ghana World Cup final score: Cristiano Ronaldo becomes first man to score in five tourneys in win

Two days after mutually agreeing to leave his club in the midst of the World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo made history with a penalty kick conversion in Portugal’s 3-1 win over Ghana. The 37-year-old calmly slotted his penalty past Ghanian keeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi’s right side to give the Portuguese a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute. In the process, he became the first man to score in five different World Cups and joined elite company with Marta of Brazil and Christine Sinclair of Canada as the only players to ever reach that feat.

Ghana managed to equalize few minutes later with captain Andre Ayew, but it didn’t last long. Joao Felix and Rafael Leao scored two goals immediately after the Ghanaian equalizer, which seemed to put an end to the game. Ghana didn’t give up and scored again with Osman Bukari. Portugal keeper Diogo Costa nearly had the blunder of the tournament when he lost the ball in a display that lacked awareness, but he got away with it as Ghana failed to capitalize in the closing moments.

The match ended 3-2 and Portugal are now leading Group H (complete standings) after South Korea and Uruguay drew in their first match. Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates will be back on Monday for Matchday 2, when they will face Uruguay at 2 p.m. ET while Ghana will play against South Korea at 8 a.m. ET (complete schedule).
