Production vehicle wheels are getting bigger. Indeed, as indicated by GM design chief Michael Simcoe back in 2019, 24-inch and 26-inch wheel sizing is just over the horizon. Now, it’s looking as though the upcoming 2024 Chevy Silverado EV will be the first modern production vehicle equipped with 24-inch wheels right from the factory.
General Motors unveiled the all-new 2024 Chevy Silverado EV in conjunction with the recent 2022 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), introducing a fresh all-electric variant of the popular pickup nameplate. In addition to the new battery-driven powertrain, the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV also offers huge 24-inch wheel , which are equipped as standard on the RST First Edition trim level. At the moment, there are no other modern passenger vehicles sold with 24-inch wheels.
As spotted during GM CEO Mary Barra’s keynote speech for CES 2022, the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV RST First Edition’s 24-inch wheels are wrapped in Michelin LT275/50R24 tires, the latter of which are current not on sale, but will launch in conjunction with the release of the new Silverado EV.
This underlines Simcoe’s assertion that “we’re headed toward 24- and 26-inch wheels.” The question is – when will we see 26-inchers offered?
As a reminder, the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV is based on a dedicated Ultium BEV platform, and is juiced by a 24-module Ultium battery pack that is integrated directly with the vehicle structure. Driving range maxes out at 400 miles on a full charge.
In the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV RST First Edition, motivation is provided by a dual-motor e4WD system producing 664 horsepower and 780 pound-feet of torque with the available Wide Open Watts Mode activated. General Motors is also offering the fleet-oriented WT trim level, which is rated at 510 horsepower and 615 pound-feet of torque.
