IDF attacks in Gaza following riots, incendiary balloons – report

The IDF is attacking targets in the Gaza Strip, claim reports by Palestinian media. Blasts were heard in the region.

According to the reports, the IAF attacked a Hamas army post in Salah a-Din Hamas in the central region of the Gaza Strip using an unmanned aerial vehicle.

Some 11 Palestinian protesters have been injured in clashes with the IDF on Saturday night following riots at the Gaza border.

Palestinian media reported at about 8 PM Saturday that Gazan “Night Harassment Units” were gathering on its border with Israel at a point on the fence east of Gaza city. The riots reignited towards midnight.

Hundreds of rioters gathered at the border, burned tires and threw explosives. IDF forces deployed and in the area responded with riot control munitions and Ruger riot-control sniper rifles, according to the IDF Spokesperson Unit.

The troops were reinforced by special forces and tank units, it added.

At least 11 Palestinians were wounded as of midnight, some seriously, by IDF fire, according to Israeli and Palestinian sources.

Earlier on Saturday, a 12-year-old boy who was present at the violent riots on the border last Saturday died due to wounds he sustained during the violence.

“The period of calm [Israel] has experienced has passed, and it has to prepare for the sounds of our explosions. We will continue our popular movement until the complete lifting of the siege on the Gaza Strip,” the night units warned in a statement on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, two fires erupted in the settlements near the southern border in Israel as a result of incendiary balloons from the Strip. Incendiary balloons have been sent into Israel over the past several days, starting 10 fires on Tuesday after the IDF struck targets throughout Monday night.

The tensions remain high despite the easing of some restrictions on the Gaza Strip that came into effect on Wednesday, ahead of Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and US President Joe Biden’s meeting.
