A British man living in Singapore said he feared for his life when he was suddenly attacked by a pack of otters.

Graham George Spencer said he was entering the Singapore Botanic Gardens on Nov. 30 when a pack of about 20 otters began to chase him. The animals were reportedly startled by another man who was out on a run. The pack of otters proceeded to bite and scratch Spencer’s legs and buttocks numerous times.

“I actually thought I was going to die — they were going to kill me,” Spencer told The Straits Times.
Spencer was eventually able to get away after a friend came to his aid and helped chase off some of the otters. He took himself to a local hospital, where he received stitches, a tetanus shot and oral antibiotics.
Otters are commonplace in Singapore as pollution in waterways that once drove them away in the 1970s has since been cleaned up. Now, it is believed to be home to 10 families of otters, or about 90 total.
