Cuyahoga County ranks third among U.S. counties for most COVID-19 cases per 100,000 population

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cuyahoga County has the third highest COVID-19 case rate per 100,000 population among U.S. counties, according to the New York Times coronavirus tracker. The data was updated on Monday.

Tompkins County, New York (272), and Pike County, Illinois (215), ranked above Cuyahoga County (180) for case rate per 100,000 population.

Cuyahoga County also ranks fourth among U.S. counties for highest daily average COVID-19 case rate, according to the tracker.

Only New York City (5,976), Cook County, Illinois (3,134), and Los Angeles County, California (2,405), have higher daily average case rates than Cuyahoga County (2,221).

Hospitalization rates remain very high in much of the Midwest and New England, according to news reports. Northeast Ohio has seen a surge in COVID-19 cases since mid-November that is filling up hospital beds and taxing healthcare resources.

The United States recently surpassed 800,000 coronavirus deaths, the most of any country. About 1,300 deaths continue to be reported each day. Ohio’s death toll stands at 28,028, as of Monday.

  • Tompkins County, New York: 272
  • Pike County, Illinois: 215
  • Cuyahoga County: 180
  • Winona County, Minnesota: 154
  • Clay County, Illinois: 138

Here are the top five U.S. counties for daily average COVID-19 cases:

  • New York City: 5,976 (New York City is considered the county seat of five counties: New York County (Manhattan), Kings County (Brooklyn), Bronx County (The Bronx), Richmond County (Staten Island), and Queens County (Queens).
  • Cook County, Illinois: 3,134
  • Los Angeles County, California: 2,405
  • Cuyahoga County: 2,221
  • Maricopa County, Arizona: 1,843
