Birmingham man charged in deadly shooting outside Homewood restaurant

A Birmingham man has been charged in Friday’s deadly shooting outside a Homewood restaurant.

The victim was identified Sunday as 35-year-old Andres James Taylor Johnson, also of Birmingham. Homewood police obtained a murder warrant against 39-year-old Jerry Jewayne Jones.

Jones’ bond is set at $250,000.

The gunfire erupted at 11:53 a.m. at Seafood King Cajun Style restaurant on State Farm Parkway.

Homewood police Sgt. John Carr said Johnson was a patron of the restaurant and was with other people. Some kind of altercation took place in the parking lot, and the victim was shot one time in the chest.

Johnson was taken to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Police were given a description of the suspects’ vehicle, which was a Ryder box truck. Officers spotted the truck on West Valley Avenue, and a brief chase pursued.

The truck was stopped on Barber’s Court and West Valley Avenue. Two men were taken into custody.

Jones has been held in the Homewood City Jail and will now be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail. The second person detained Friday has been released without being charged.

A motive has not been disclosed.
