Watch an SUV-sized asteroid zoom by Earth in close shave flyby
Asteroid 2023 BU zipped past Earth Thursday night (Jan. 26) to the delight of amateur astronomers worldwide. For skywatchers without access to a telescope or those who had their view hampered by bad weather, luckily the Italy-based Virtual Telescope Project was there to observe the event and livestream the whole thing for free.
The Virtual Telescope is a robotic telescope operated by Italian amateur astronomer Gianluca Masi near Rome, Italy. As 2023 BU hurtled toward Earth, the telescope was able to track the rock through a gap in the clouds when it was about 13,670 miles (22,000 kilometers) from the closest point on Earth’s surface (about the altitude of the GPS navigation satellite constellation) and 22,990 miles (37,000 km) from the Virtual Telescope.
Masi, who shared an hour-long webcast of the observations on the Virtual Telescope website, wasn’t able to capture the closest approach as clouds rolled in, however. Nonetheless, the Virtual Telescope Project was able to get a good look at the car-sized rock, seen in time-lapse above.

The rock, discovered less than a week ago on Saturday (Jan. 21), passed above the southern tip of South America at 7:27 p.m. EST on Thursday Jan. 26 (0027 GMT on Jan. 27), at a distance of only 2,240 miles (3,600 km) at its closest point to Earth’s surface.
This close approach makes 2023 BU the fourth nearest asteroid ever observed from Earth, with the exception of five space rocks that were detected before diving into Earth’s atmosphere.
Only 11.5 to 28 feet wide (3.5 to 8.5 meters), 2023 BU posed no danger to the planet. If the trajectories of the two bodies had intersected, the asteroid would mostly have burned up in the atmosphere with only small fragments possibly falling to the ground as meteorites.
In the videos and images shared by Masi, the asteroid is seen as a small bright dot in the center of the frame, while the longer, brighter lines are the surrounding stars. In reality, of course, it was the asteroid that was moving with respect to Earth, traveling at a speed of 21,000 mph (33,800 km/h) with respect to Earth. As Masi’s computerized telescope tracked its positionthe rock appeared stationary in the images while rendering the stars as these moving streaks.
The gravitational kick that 2023 BU received during its encounter with Earth will alter the shape of its orbit around the sun. Previously, the space rock followed a rather circular orbit, completing one lap around the sun in 359 days. From now on, BU 2023 will travel through the inner solar system on a more elliptical path, venturing half way toward Mars at the farthest point of its orbit. This alteration will add 66 days to BU 2023’s orbital period.
The asteroid was discovered by famed Crimea-based astronomer and astrophotographer Gennadiy Borisov, the same man who in 2018 found the first interstellar comet, which now bears his name, Borisov.

Rare green comet not seen since the Stone Age will zoom overhead tonight. Here’s how to watch.
On Feb. 1, a comet called C/2022 E3 (ZTF) will pass by Earth for the first time in 50,000 years, meaning the last time it cruised by our planet, Homo sapiens were still sharing the planet with Neanderthals. And according to calculations from astronomers, the comet will never come back.
But you don’t have to wait until February to see the comet; there are a few ways to spot it before its closest approach, starting today.
On Thursday (Jan. 12), the comet will be at perihelion, its closest point to the sun. When comets pass close to the sun, their ice sublimates — meaning it turns into a gas, skipping the liquid phase. This sublimation creates a temporary atmosphere, called a coma, that glows from our point of view.
Starting in the predawn hours of Jan. 12, the comet could be visible near the northern sky constellation Corona Borealis and then will move westward as time goes on, according to Live Science’s sister site Space.com. If viewing conditions aren’t ideal in your area, you can tune in to a livestream provided by the Virtual Telescope Project, which will start Jan. 12 at 11 p.m. ET.
On the nights of Jan. 26 and 27, the comet may be visible just east of the Little Dipper’s bowl. Experts expect the comet to be visible to the naked eye by the third week of January. By Feb. 1, when the comet makes its closest approach to Earth, at 28 million miles (45 million kilometers) away, it will be near the constellation Camelopardalis. A few days later, on Feb. 5 and 6, the comet will pass to the west of the star Capella and then enter the constellation Auriga.
Unfortunately, there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to see the comet. If you live in an area with high light pollution, the comet will be much too faint to see with the naked eye. Even in areas with less light pollution, the closer the comet comes to Earth, the more its light will seem to diffuse over a larger area. Your best bet may be to seek an area with dark, clear skies and avoid using telescopes and binoculars, according to Space.com; your eyes should be just fine.
Comet C/2022 E3 was discovered by Frank Masci and Bryce Bolin in March 2022. The astronomers spotted the comet using the Zwicky Transient Facility at the Palomar Observatory in Southern California. At the time of its discovery, the comet was within the orbit of Jupiter, nearly 400 million miles (643 million km) from the sun.
Samsung Galaxy S24 could get improved camera zoom performance
While we’re still waiting for the Galaxy S23 to go official, rumors about Samsung’s 2024 flagship smartphone have already started circulating. As always, we can expect Samsung to improve the camera performance of its high-end phones, and the same is true for the Galaxy S24.
Samsung phones already offer the best camera zoom performance in the industry, with the Galaxy S23 Ultra being the current champ. According to tipster Ice Universe, the Galaxy S24 Ultra will reportedly feature an even better telephoto camera sensor and improved zoom mechanism. However, there’s no clarity on what the new zoom solution actually is.
LG Innotek recently unveiled a new telephoto camera lens mechanism that offers a continuous zoom range from 4x to 9x. It means that you can capture images sharp images at all zoom levels, starting from 4x and ending at 9x, similar to dedicated digital or DSLR cameras. If Samsung can bring such a zoom camera on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, it could be incredible.

The compact and ultra-light Creative Live Cam Sync V2 likely won’t be your go-to solution for high-quality streaming or recording, but it’s a good budget all-in-one buy at $30. For that low price, you still get a camera that shoots at a perfectly competent 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second (fps) and with a 77-degree field of view.
In natural light, it picks up detail fine and autofocuses smoothly. We found its picture quality to look best when using natural light coming in from the side. In these conditions, the camera gave dimension to faces and avoided a washed-out look. That said, it would be helpful to have image controls in Creative’s app, for example, to fine-tune the white balance and tint since skin tones lean to green.
You can mount the Live Cam Sync V2 directly on your monitor—or attach it to a stand or tripod if you have one—and plug it in using the supplied USB 2.0 cable. Like most of our picks, it doesn’t require downloading any software, so you can use it instantly.
If you’re a Windows user, Creative’s companion app lets you change a few extra settings—though these all apply to audio, not video quality. For example, you can enable VoiceDetect, which automatically mutes and unmutes your mic during a call. You can also manually change your voice and environmental noise level or leave the camera to auto-adjust them.
The camera has a subtle white light to show when it’s in use and a basic privacy cover that doesn’t detach. The webcam has a built-in microphone; its recording quality is acceptable for calls, although the audio was slightly hollow-sounding even in a small, carpeted room. Still, it’s good enough if you need an all-in-one webcam for work or personal calls.

“Next-generation” Super Res Zoom on the Pixel 7 Pro pushes the 48-megapixel telephoto camera to DSLR-level heights, and Google has shared three sets of samples outside of the keynote.
The main Manhattan sample of One World Trade Center starts 0.5x with the second picture below at 1x. It goes all the way to 30x where you can see the fine detail of the antenna spire. Starting at 20x, the Pixel 7 Pro uses a new machine learning upscaler that’s powered by the Tensor G2. Before that, 15x and up uses Zoom Stabilization so that you can “take handheld photos without a tripod.”

These are some of the last frontiers of smartphone photography, where phones haven’t been able to truly replicate the quality of a DSLR.
In choosing what camera features to work on, Pixel Camera product manager lead said in Google’s new podcast that it looks at why people are “willing to lug around a 15-pound camera, $10,000 dedicated camera” and work on bringing that functionality to smartphones. Google Research has been involved in Super Res Zoom since 2018 with the feature being a combination of hardware, software, and machine learning.
