NASA Detects More Than 50 Methane ‘Super-Emitter’ Zones Around The World : ScienceAlert

NASA scientists, using a tool designed to study how dust affects climate, have identified more than 50 spots around the world emitting major levels of methane, a development that could help combat the potent greenhouse gas.

”Reining in methane emissions is key to limiting global warming,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said in a press release on Tuesday.

”This exciting new development will not only help researchers better pinpoint where methane leaks are coming from, but also provide insight on how they can be addressed – quickly.”

NASA said its Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation (EMIT) is designed to foster understanding of the effects of airborne dust on climate.

But EMIT, which was installed on the International Space Station in July and can focus on areas as small as a soccer field, has also shown the ability to detect the presence of methane.

NASA said more than 50 “super-emitters” of methane gas in Central Asia, the Middle East, and the southwestern United States have been identified so far. Most of them are connected to the fossil-fuel, waste or agriculture sectors.

Kate Calvin, NASA’s chief scientist and senior climate advisor, said EMIT’s “additional methane-detecting capability offers a remarkable opportunity to measure and monitor greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.”

”Exceeds our expectations”

Methane is responsible for roughly 30 percent of the global rise in temperatures to date.

While far less abundant in the atmosphere than CO2, it is about 28 times more powerful as a greenhouse gas on a century-long timescale. Over a 20-year time frame, it is 80 times more potent.

Methane lingers in the atmosphere for only a decade, compared to hundreds or thousands of years for CO2.

This means a sharp reduction in emissions could shave several tenths of a degree Celsius off of projected global warming by mid-century, helping keep alive the Paris Agreement goal of capping Earth’s average temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius, according to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

”EMIT will potentially find hundreds of super-emitters – some of them previously spotted through air-, space-, or ground-based measurement, and others that were unknown,” NASA said.

Andrew Thorpe, a research technologist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory leading the EMIT methane effort, said some of the methane plumes detected by EMIT are among the largest ever seen.

”What we’ve found in a just a short time already exceeds our expectations,” Thorpe said.

NASA said a methane plume about 2 miles (3.3 kilometers) long was detected southeast of Carlsbad, New Mexico, in the Permian Basin, one of the largest oilfields in the world.

It said 12 plumes from oil and gas infrastructure were identified in Turkmenistan, east of the Caspian Sea port city of Hazar.

A methane plume at least 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) long was detected south of Tehran from a major waste-processing complex, NASA said.

Nakia Creek Fire at 1,565 acres; evacuation zones shrink

Evacuation zones shrank Monday as firefighters worked to bring the Nakia Creek Fire back under control after it grew tenfold over the weekend to 1,565 acres.

As of Saturday morning, the fire was smoldering after burning 156 acres and getting progressively more contained by crews, according to Washington Department of Natural Resources spokeswoman Sharon Steriti.

That changed on Sunday, when hot, dry and windy weather gave new life to a fire.

“It was looking really good, and as you may also know, we had a red flag warning on Sunday,” Steriti said. “And the fire unfortunately got across the line during the evening (Saturday), and on Sunday morning, it was discovered that it was burning over the line. And then the east winds and weather came in, and kind of changed the story.”

Steriti was optimistic Monday afternoon that calmer, cooler weather would allow firefighters to get more of a handle on the fire. The high temperature for Camas is forecast to reach 77 degrees Tuesday, the National Weather Service shows.

“We’re not going to be getting those winds that we got over the weekend, so the conditions and weather are looking pretty good to make some really good advances in getting this fire under control,” she said Monday.

No structures have been destroyed and no one has been injured from the fire, she said. The fire was 5 percent contained Monday, according to the Department of Natural Resources.

Evacuation zones grew rapidly Sunday to include nearly 29,000 residences in the areas of Camas and Washougal under a Level 1 “Get Ready” warning. Estimates that night placed the fire at 2,000 acres until crews could get a better look at conditions Monday morning, according to Clark Regional Emergency Services Agency.

Clark County sheriff’s Sgt. Chris Skidmore said officials erred on the side of caution when setting evacuation zones. Sheriff’s office Search and Rescue crews knocked on about 600 doors Sunday to notify the residents they were under a Level 3 “Go Now” warning, Skidmore said.

But with more favorable weather Monday, authorities hoped to allow some to return home. About 2,500 people were still in warning zones, with 553 of under a Level 3 warning, according to CRESA.

Some roads also reopened Monday, including Northeast 53rd Street to Northeast 292nd Avenue and Northeast Blair Road at Washougal River Road to state Highway 500. Closures remained, as of Monday evening, in the areas of Lessard, Ireland, Livingston Mountain, Boulder Creek and Winters. The L1000 and L1400 roads are also still closed.

Rumors of rampant looting in evacuated areas are not true, Skidmore said, and deputies have been patrolling neighborhoods and road closure areas.

Steriti noted this summer has been one of the driest on record and said it’s not normal to have a wildfire like this so late in the year.

Sunday’s extreme weather conditions also sparked new fires, including the Black Hole Fire near Chelatchie Prairie. Officials issued a Level 1 warning for the northeast corner of Clark County and the northwest corner of Skamania County.

There’s no indication any new fires nearby sparked from the Nakia Creek Fire, Steriti said.

School closures

The Washougal School District will operate school with regular bell times Tuesday, the district announced Monday afternoon. The district closed schools Monday due to the fire.

As of the updated evacuation map shared Monday morning, no schools within district boundaries remained within evacuation zones.

Two of the Washougal district’s schools, Cape Horn-Skye Elementary School and Canyon Creek Middle School, had been previously located in the Level 3 evacuation area and were closed by the fire chief Sunday. Gause Elementary School was open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to provide on-site meals, support and recreational activities.

Schools in the Camas School District will again be open Tuesday. The district has modified several of its bus routes in accordance to fire evacuation zones, according to a district spokesperson.

Bus No. 6 will be canceled. Bus No. 3, No. 7 , No. 15, No. 66 and No. 68 will all be running with limited service due to road closures. The district said it will continue to monitor evacuation zones and make further adjustments accordingly.

Evergreen Public Schools sent out a message to families Sunday evening to let them know they were monitoring the situation via the Clark Regional Emergency Service Agency’s website. Monday’s evacuation map showed, just a handful of areas in the Evergreen district remain within the Level 1 boundary: Union High School, Frontier Middle School and Pioneer Elementary School.

Mount Pleasant schools were closed Monday. There was no word, as of Monday afternoon, if they would reopen Tuesday.

Poor air quality

Air quality ranged between moderate and unhealthy Monday in parts of Clark County as a result of the wildfire smoke.

The Vancouver area is expected to be in the moderate to unhealthy for sensitive groups air quality range for the next few days, while areas closer to the fire, such as Battle Ground and Yacolt, are predicted to be in the unhealthy to hazardous level, according to Uri Papish, executive director of the Southwest Clean Air Agency.

The agency is extending its air quality advisory through Thursday when a stronger wind flow is expected to push the smoke east, according to Papish.

Papish recommends that people who may be more sensitive limit their time spent outdoors, limit strenuous activity and limit indoor air pollution by not burning candles or incense and keeping doors and windows closed.

If you are outside in areas with unhealthy for sensitive groups to hazardous air quality, Papish strongly recommends wearing a snug-fitting KN95 mask. Less-secure medical masks will not do much to help avoid inhaling particulate matter, according to Papish.

People at an increased risk for problems from decreased air quality include children, those over 65, people with heart and lung disease, people with respiratory infections, pregnant people and people who smoke, among others, according to a press release sent out by Clark County Public Health. The release did note that “even healthy people can have symptoms or health problems” when the air is smoky.

Some symptoms include: sore throat, headaches, burning eyes, coughing, shortness of breath and chest pain. If you are experiencing more severe symptoms, like shortness of breath or chest pain, the release urges individuals to seek medical attention.

“Check the air monitoring network,” Papish said. “Stay indoors and take measures to protect (your health).”

Surrogate mothers rescued from Ukrainian war zones as Russia-Ukraine battle continues

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

As the war between Russia and Ukraine nears its eighth week, Project DYNAMO is managing to continue with evacuation missions for groups of people who are most at risk.

Five surrogate mothers who are carrying children for American parents were among the 60 people the rescue organization recently evacuated. They’re currently staying in a “safe location” in Ukraine that has been code-named Club DYNAMO.

RUSSIA INVADES UKRAINE: LIVE UPDATES

“We’re just relieved these missions were successful and with all involved safely out of harm’s way,” said Bryan Stern, Project DYNAMO’s co-founder, in a statement.

The mothers and other individuals were evacuated from Ukrainian cities that are under attack, including Kharkiv, Dnipro, Kherson, Nickolaev and Kakhovka, according to a Project DYNAMO press release.

“As indiscriminate attacks injuring and killing scores of civilians are increasing, these rescues of civilians, including pregnant surrogates, are becoming even more imperative and more difficult given the dynamic threat environment,” he continued.

Project DYNAMO reports that its volunteer team members have conducted five successful rescue operations to remove Ukrainian surrogate mothers from dangerous war zones.

The organization has code-named these rescue operations AQUARIUS, which Project DYNAMO created after the success of its Gemini rescue mission in March, when three babies were evacuated from Kyiv.

At Club DYNAMO, rescued surrogate mothers are able to stay at the “secure lay-over location” or another safe site of their choosing.

Two of those rescued babies were premature twins named Lenny and Moishe, who were born via surrogate. That experience opened the eyes of many to the needs of Ukrainian surrogate mothers.

PREMATURE BABIES IN UKRAINE RESCUED VIA AMBULANCE ESCORT DURING KYIV SHELLING

Ukraine is a popular surrogacy destination for international parents. It’s a commercialized industry in the eastern European country; the costs of the alternative reproduction method are generally viewed as more affordable, FOX Business reported in mid-March.

So far, Project DYNAMO has rescued and reunited more than a dozen surrogate babies with their intended parents who live in the U.S., Canada and U.K.

The nonprofit rescue organization said that more than 100 surrogates have applied for evacuation assistance from combat zones, including Mariupol, the southern port city that made global headlines after a Russian airstrike destroyed a maternity and children’s hospital.

Project DYNAMO describes its team members as “humanitarians.” Many of them are “current and former members of the U.S. military.”

UKRAINE, A LEADING SURROGACY DESTINATION, IS CAUGHT AMID WAR: WHAT TO KNOW

The other evacuees whom Project DYNAMO rescued during its latest AQUARIUS rescue mission included 40 children and 15 adults. It reportedly took 30 hours for all the evacuees to be rescued from their locations.

The organization reported that it has rescued more than 400 people from “war-torn, contested and Russian occupied areas of Ukraine” — and it has “transported them safely to neighboring countries.”

It has been rescuing people in need since the start of the war, which began on Feb. 24, 2022.

U.S. VETERAN RESCUED FROM RUSSIAN-OCCUPIED TERRITORY IN UKRAINE: ‘WE DON’T LEAVE OUR PEOPLE BEHIND’

The nonprofit has received more than 15,000 evacuation requests from people around the world in relation to the Russia-Ukraine war, including the U.S., U.K, Canada, France, Romania, Nigeria, Mexico and Afghanistan.

Project DYNAMO is accepting evacuation request applications on projectdynamo.org, and it also recommends that people send evacuation requests to the U.S. State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).

The privately run and donor-funded rescue organization derives its name from “Operation Dynamo.”

That was the code name used during the Dunkirk evacuation operations of World War II in 1940.

Tackling ‘Freedom Convoy’ protests in Ottawa could involve ‘no-go zones,’ Canadian official says

Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino said the new measures, outlined Tuesday, would allow law enforcement to quell unrest in Ottawa’s downtown, where the protests against pandemic restrictions — which have also focused on Trudeau’s administration — have upended daily life.

The actions could include declaring “certain zones that are adjacent to critical infrastructure like borders, like our national symbols including legislatures, like war monuments … as a no-go zone,” the minister said at a news conference. The emergency declaration helps resolve questions about the authority to take such steps, he added, though it has been criticized as a threat to civil liberties.

Big rigs and other vehicles still jammed major thoroughfares in the city, with protesters buzzing around Parliament after the Emergencies Act, passed in 1988, was invoked in response to a crisis that has rippled across the country. In Ottawa, which has seen monuments such as the National War Memorial defaced, police said they made 18 arrests, launched dozens of investigations and issued more than 3,000 tickets.

Ottawa’s acting deputy police chief, Trish Ferguson, said the number of protesters downtown had fallen below 150, with fewer vehicles clogging the streets. Ferguson said police were waiting “for official details before operationalizing” the Emergencies Act.

The comments came after Ottawa Police Chief Peter Sloly resigned Tuesday over backlash to what was seen as a lax response from authorities to the demonstrations, now in their third week.

Canadian officials said they cleared more crossings on the border with the United States after reopening the Ambassador Bridge, the busiest land crossing and a key trade artery connecting Windsor, Ontario, to Detroit.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Alberta said four men were charged with conspiracy to commit murder near the Coutts border crossing, which they said was clear, with traffic “moving slowly.” A crossing in British Columbia was also announced as open, while authorities in Manitoba said they had reached a “resolution” with demonstrators cutting off the Emerson crossing and expected them to clear out Wednesday.

In Alberta, as a line of trucks left the blockade, plastered with Canadian flags and signs reading “END ALL MANDATES,” some protesters told local media they packed up because news of the weapons discovery conflicted with their message. “It’s too bad that we have to leave, but everybody did really their best,” protester Martina Van Hierden told Canada’s Global TV.

Under rules the government published Tuesday, authorities said they can ban public assemblies that “may reasonably be expected to lead to a breach of the peace” and “designate and secure protected places, including critical infrastructure,” which includes trade corridors and international border crossings.

The measures also allow officials to remove vehicles, equipment or structures that are part of a blockade “anywhere in Canada” and grant the power to “require any crowdfunding platform and payment processor” to report transactions to financial authorities.

FAA Says Detroit Metro Airport, 49 Other Airlines Getting Buffer Zones To Block 5G Signals – CBS Detroit

(CBS Detroit) — The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says the Detroit Metro Airport is one of 50 airports to have a temporary protection buffer zone from 5G cellular signals.

This comes as a number of airports report fears that 5G signals could interfere with flight controls.

The FAA says the buffer zones will minimize any potential interference and last for six months. The administration is working with airlines to determine exactly how instruments perform in this new environment.

AT&T and Verizon confirmed earlier this month they will hold off on activating 5G services near airports until Jan. 19, and that in the meantime, officials will continue working on adapting French-style restrictions on 5G to the United States.

In December, the FAA issued an urgent warning that it planned to ban pilots from using a key aircraft instrument amid concerns that 5G signals could interfere with the devices — a decision the agency said would likely lead to widespread flight delays and diversions.

In a statement, the FAA thanked the wireless carriers.

“Safety is the core of our mission and this guides all of our decisions,” the agency said. “We look forward to using the additional time and space to reduce flight disruptions associated with this 5G deployment.”

FAA Announces the 50 Airports That Will Have 5G Buffer Zones

Photo: John Lamparski/SOPA Images/LightRocket (Getty Images)

The Federal Aviation Administration on Friday published a list of the 50 U.S. airports that will have buffer zones, or areas where AT&T and Verizon have agreed to limit 5G signals for six months.

In a statement, the FAA said it worked with the aviation community to determine where the buffer zones would reduce the risk of disruptions, considering factors such as traffic volume, the number of low-visibility days, and geographic location. The agency said that many airports are not currently affected by AT&T and Verizon’s upcoming 5G deployment, a service the wireless companies will activate on Jan. 19 after various delays.

The buffer zones aim to reduce the potential interference of 5G antennas with airplane instruments, called radar altimeters, that tell pilots how far they are from the ground. They help pilots navigate and land planes during bad weather and prevent crashes.

Airports on the list include Dallas Love Field, a major passenger hub for Southwest Airlines, and Chicago O’Hare, which is a large hub for United Airlines and American Airlines. Facilities that serve as hubs for cargo and private jets, such as airports in Indianapolis, Northern New Jersey, and New York City, were also part of those selected.

In addition, the list includes airports in Austin, Nashville, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Seattle, and San Francisco, among many others.

The FAA’s announcement comes amid a temporary ceasefire between transportation regulators and aviation groups, who worry that 5G antennas near some airports could affect the accuracy of altimeters’ readings, and telecommunications regulators and wireless companies, who maintain that 5G technology will not pose safety issues.

On Monday, AT&T and Verizon agreed to pause their 5G rollout for two additional weeks at the request of federal agencies. The move was a rapid about-face from the wireless companies, which just a day earlier had fervently put their foot down and said that agreeing to the petition would have been “an irresponsible abdication of the operating control required to deploy world-class and globally competitive communications networks.”

AT&T and Verizon bought nearly all of the C-band radio spectrum auctioned by the Federal Communications Commission last year, spending a combined total of nearly $70 billion, to improve their 5G networks.

Over the next six months, which is how long AT&T and Verizon have agreed to keep the buffers in place around the 50 airports, the FAA will work with aerospace manufacturers and airlines to confirm whether planes can safely operate after the wireless companies’ 5G service is turned on.

FAA details 50 airports that will have 5G buffer zones

The Federal Aviation Administration on Friday disclosed a list of 50 U.S. airports that will have buffer zones when wireless carriers turn on new 5G C-band service on Jan. 19. (George Frey, Reuters)

Estimated read time: 2-3 minutes

WASHINGTON — The Federal Aviation Administration on Friday disclosed a list of 50 U.S. airports that will have buffer zones when wireless carriers turn on new 5G C-band service on Jan. 19.

AT&T and Verizon on Monday agreed to buffer zones around 50 airports to reduce the risk of disruption from potential interference to sensitive airplane instruments like altimeters. They also agreed to delay deployment for two weeks, averting an aviation safety standoff.

The list includes airports in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Detroit, Dallas, Philadelphia, Seattle and Miami. Salt Lake City is not on the list.

The FAA said it does not “not necessarily” mean that low-visibility flights cannot occur at airports that are not among the 50.

AT&T and Verizon, which won nearly all of the C-Band spectrum in an $80-billion auction last year, declined comment.

On Thursday, the FAA renewed warnings that despite the agreement 5G wireless service could still disrupt flights, saying “even with the temporary buffer around 50 airports, 5G deployment will increase the risk of disruption during low visibility” including “flight cancellations, diverted flights, and delays during periods of low visibility.”

Some major airports such as Denver, Atlanta and Ronald Reagan Washington National are not on the list because 5G is not yet being deployed, while others are not on the list because “5G towers are far enough away that a natural buffer exists.”

Other airports not listed do not currently have the ability to allow low-visibility landings, the FAA said. It said the delay would allow it to evaluate ways to minimize disruptions, and also gives companies more time to prepare.

“If there’s the possibility of a risk to the flying public, we are obligated to pause the activity, until we can prove it is safe,” the FAA said.

ACI-NA President and CEO Kevin Burke, who heads the association representing U.S. and Canadian airports, said on Friday the FAA list “is largely irrelevant because the entire aviation system is about to be adversely impacted by this poorly planned and coordinated expansion of 5G service in and around airports.” He said the “so-called fix will create winners and losers within the airport community, and the entire aviation system will suffer under the terms of this deal.”

Airlines for America, a trade group representing U.S. passenger and cargo carriers, said it appreciated the “FAA’s efforts to implement mitigations for airports that may be most impacted by disruptions generated by the deployment of new 5G service.”

Mysterious Anomalies Deep Within Our Planet May Have Lingered Since Earth’s Creation

Chemical leftovers from the very earliest days of our planet could still be present near Earth’s core, according to new research, and the discovery could improve our understanding of plate tectonics phenomena happening today.

The team behind the study compares these leftovers to clumps of flour at the bottom of a bowl of batter – elements that haven’t been properly mixed over the course of billions of years, which show up as anomalies on seismic wave readings.

We know that seismic waves slow to a crawl near the core of the Earth, going through what are known as ultra-low velocity zones (ULVZs). The big question is what are these zones made out of – and scientists now think they might have found the answer.

“This finding changes our view on the origin and dynamics of ultra-low velocity zones,” says seismologist Surya Pachhai from the Australian National University.

“We found that this type of ultra-low velocity zone can be explained by chemical heterogeneities created at the very beginning of the Earth’s history and that they are still not well mixed after 4.5 billion years of mantle convection.”

The way that seismic waves echo through Earth’s mantle and crust give us clues about their composition, but measuring down through around 2,900 kilometers or 1,800 miles of rock isn’t easy. To address that, the scientists used a reverse-engineering approach, running hundreds of thousands of computer simulations, using a process known as Bayesian inversion.

By comparing these models to actual readings taken from underneath the Coral Sea between Australia and New Zealand, the team was able to narrow down the possibilities of what the ULVZs just above the liquid metal outer core could be made of.

The researchers suggest that the ULVZs could be partly made of iron oxide – we know it as rust, but it acts as a metal deep in the mantle. It also now looks likely that this section of our planet is made up of several sublayers, something which hasn’t been suspected for these zones before.

This layering could well have been caused by a planetary object the size of Mars smashing into the early Earth. The event is thought to have thrown up debris that formed the Moon, and it’s also likely to have created an ocean of magma, made up of rock, gases, and crystals, which could have sunk down to its current position over billions of years.

“The physical properties of ultra-low velocity zones are linked to their origin, which in turn provides important information about the thermal and chemical status, evolution and dynamics of Earth’s lowermost mantle – an essential part of mantle convection that drives plate tectonics,” says Pachhai.

Seismic waves are known to slow by up to a half in ULVZs, with corresponding density going up by a third. It has been suggested that these are partially melted areas of the mantle, providing magma for volcanic hot spots on the surface (such as Iceland).

However, not all of the high-density zones match up with places of frequent volcanic activity, which suggests something else is going on. That inspired the research team to take a closer look – revealing the surprising layers that make up these ULVZs, with the help of computer modeling.

The mantle and the ULVZs at the bottom of it can drive the movement of tectonic plates close to the surface, which means the new research doesn’t just teach us more about the birth of the Earth, but also more about how it’s behaving today.

“Of all of the features we know about in the deep mantle, ultra-low velocity zones represent what are probably the most extreme,” says geologist Michael Thorne from the University of Utah.

“Indeed, these are some of the most extreme features found anywhere in the planet.”

The research has been published in Nature Geoscience.

Dow Jones Futures: These Sectors Lead Market Rotation; Tesla Falls; 3 Stocks In Buy Zones

Dow Jones futures tilted lower late Tuesday, along with S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq futures. The stock market rally continued its move away from techs, and toward energy and financials on Tuesday. Tesla stock fell but held key support while other megacaps such as Apple (AAPL) barely budged.

X

In overnight trade, HPQ stock and Pure Storage (PSTG) signaled breakouts on earnings, but there were big earnings losers too.

After several weeks of a broad-based rally, the stock market has returned to sector rotation. It’s a trickier environment for investors, especially for new buys.

Software continues to get hammered. Asana (ASAN) and Digital Ocean (DOCN) extended Monday’s big sell-offs, while Snowflake (SNOW) skidded to its 50-day line.

Tesla (TSLA) fell hard but pared losses. Other megacaps were little changed. Microsoft (MSFT) fell, slightly, for a second straight session. Google parent Alphabet (GOOGL) and Nvidia (NVDA) also edged lower. But Apple stock and Amazon.com (AMZN) edged higher.

On the upside, energy stocks were strong Tuesday as crude oil prices rose despite President Joe Biden releasing strategic oil reserves to the market, with Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) among the shale names flashing buy signals. Financials rose again as Treasury yields continued to climb.

Key Earnings

In after-hours earnings news, PC maker HP Inc. (HPQ) and PSTG stock surged 7.5 and 16%, respectively, on earnings. HPQ stock and Pure Storage gapped out of bases overnight. But Autodesk (ADSK), Nordstrom (JWN) and Gap (GPS) sold off 15%, 23% and 16% in extended trade.

Retailers were big earnings movers in Tuesday’s session, with Best Buy (BBY) and Dick’s Sporting Goods (DKS) plunging on earnings while Dollar Tree (DLTR) extended its recent run.

Tesla stock, Microsoft, Nvidia, Google and Snowflake are on IBD Leaderboard. Apple stock and Pioneer Natural Resources are on SwingTrader. Microsoft and Google are IBD Long-Term Leaders. Tesla, Google and Nvidia stock are on the IBD 50. Pioneer was IBD Stock Of The Day.

Dow Jones Futures Today

Dow Jones futures tilted lower vs. fair value. S&P 500 futures fell 0.1% and Nasdaq 100 futures dipped.

Remember that overnight action in Dow futures and elsewhere doesn’t necessarily translate into actual trading in the next regular stock market session. The past few days have showed relatively quiet action in Dow futures that didn’t foreshadow the regular session divergence.

Stock Market Rally

The stock market rally once again started off with modest moves in the major indexes, followed by significant divergence. However, that divergence narrowed a little bit.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.55% in Tuesday’s stock market trading. The S&P 500 index climbed 0.2%. The Nasdaq composite fell 0.5%, though that was well off session lows. The big-cap Nasdaq 100 also lost about 0.5%. The small-cap Russell 2000 dipped 0.1%.

The 10-year Treasury yield rose four basis points to 1.67%, after jumping nine basis points on Monday. Crude oil futures climbed 2.3% to $78.50 a barrel.

Among the best ETFs, the Innovator IBD 50 ETF (FFTY) sank 1.6%, while the Innovator IBD Breakout Opportunities ETF (BOUT) dipped 0.3%.  The iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) sank 1.6%. Microsoft stock is a major IGV component. The VanEck Vectors Semiconductor ETF (SMH) retreated 0.7%. Nvidia stock is a key SMH holding.

Reflecting more-speculative story stocks, ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK) gave up 2.3%, hitting a fresh six-month low. ARK Genomics ETF (ARKG) slid 1.3%%, another 52-week low. Tesla stock is still the top holding across ARK Invest’s ETFs, but ARK funds have been paring TSLA holdings in recent months.

SPDR S&P Metals & Mining ETF (XME) rose 0.3% and Global X U.S. Infrastructure Development ETF (PAVE) climbed 0.4%. U.S. Global Jets ETF (JETS) fell 0.45%. SPDR S&P Homebuilders ETF (XHB) dipped 0.1%. The Energy Select SPDR ETF (XLE) rallied 3.1%, with PXD stock a top 10 holding. The Financial Select SPDR ETF (XLF) climbed 1.6%.

Market Rally Analysis

This is still a confirmed stock market rally. The major indexes are not that far from all-time highs.

Still, the broad-based market uptrend that took hold in October and early November is become trickier to handle. After Monday’s downside reversal from record highs, the Nasdaq fell again Tuesday but closed above its 21-day line after fighting support near its Nov. 10 low. The small-cap Russell 2000 found support at its 50-day line. The Dow Jones rose slightly for a second straight session, but is still below its 21-day line.

The stock market rally’s rotation out of growth isn’t especially surprising. At Monday’s record high, the Nasdaq 100 was more than 8% above its 50-day line, signaling a strong risk of a pullback. And that’s what happened. Megacaps either slashed gains, such as Tesla and Apple stock, or reversed lower, like Nvidia stock. Meanwhile, many hot software stocks such as Asana, SNOW stock and related high-value names such as Airbnb (ABNB) and DoorDash (DASH) tumbled.

Selling continued Tuesday in software names. SNOW stock found support at its 50-day line, but a two-day 12% tumble is not the way you want to see growth names pull back.

Tesla stock fell 4%, but bounced off its 21-day line. Other megacaps were little changed but are no longer masking underlying weakness in growth and the broader market rally.

The FFTY ETF, which plunged below its 50-day line on Monday, is testing its 200-day line. Keep in mind that the FFTY, like growth stocks overall, fell last week even as Apple stock and other megacaps surged higher.

The IGV ETF skidded through its 50-day line Tuesday, even with MSFT stock still far above that key level. And while highflying growth stocks are struggling, beaten-down high-value stocks such as ARK-owned Roku (ROKU) and Teladoc (TDOC) haven’t had any immunity to the selling.

Retail stocks were definitely hit or miss, with big positive and negative moves on earnings before and after Tuesday’s session.

On the upside, energy stocks and banks are rallying with crude oil prices and Treasury yields. Some are flashing early entries or other buy signals. Steel stocks largely held their ground after Monday’s big move.

Time The Market With IBD’s ETF Market Strategy

What To Do Now

When meme stocks were dominating attention earlier in the year, IBD would ask: What’s your edge in trading those names? Now with sector rotation back in force, what exactly is your edge in the current market environment?

Will the market rally regain broad-based strength, or will the major indexes all fall? Is the sector rotation into commodity plays and financials going to last, or will growth quickly rebound?

In the here and now, many growth stocks look severely damaged, while others are fighting for key support.

Some huge winners like Nvidia stock are holding up relatively well, but how long can the megacaps withstand a broad growth sell-off?

Investors should have reduced exposure over the past couple of days. Much of that likely came from selling losers and taking partial or total gains in winners that were selling off hard. But investors simply may have wanted to reduce exposure in an uncertain environment, holding on to long-term winners.

While cutting back on growth, investors could be making buys in energy stocks such as PXD or bank stocks or ETFs. But investors may want to treat any such buys as swing trades, taking at least partial profits at, say, a 5% gain and cutting losses very quickly. Why? Because with sector rotation back in play, energy and financial stocks could easily sell off quickly if oil prices and Treasury yields fall back again.

The upcoming Thanksgiving holiday will likely keep volume low on Wednesday and especially in Friday’s half-day session, so it’ll be harder to judge the action in leading stocks and the major indexes until next week.
