Home Improvement’s Zachery Ty Bryan guilty in domestic violence case

CLOSE

Actor Zachery Ty Bryan, who played Tim Allen’s oldest son Brad Taylor on “Home Improvement” in the ’90s, pleaded guilty Tuesday to two Class A misdemeanor counts stemming from a domestic violence case.

The charges were menacing and assault in the fourth degree constituting domestic violence. Lane County (Oregon) District Attorney Patricia Perlow told USA TODAY that Bryan was sentenced to three years of bench probation with multiple conditions, including partaking in a batterer intervention program and having no contact with the victim.

Six other charges related to an October incident – harassment, coercion, strangulation, interference with making a report and second counts of menacing and assault in the fourth degree – were dismissed.

“While Mr. Bryan was charged with additional crimes, including two class C felonies, it is in the interest of closure for the victim and in recognition of the backlog of cases we have due to COVID restrictions that make me believe this resolution is in the interest of justice,” Perlow added.

USA TODAY has reached out to Bryan’s attorney for further comment. The actor has not yet spoken publicly on the incident.

In October, the Eugene Police Department said officers were dispatched to an apartment after a reported physical dispute. They found Bryan, 39, sitting outside and his girlfriend, 27, at a neighboring apartment.

Bryan reportedly assaulted the victim, impeded her breathing, and took her phone away when she tried to call 911, police said. The victim declined medical assistance. Bryan was booked into Lane County jail shortly after.

Bryan appeared on the longrunning hit ABC series from 1991 to 1999. Since then, he has had guest roles on “Burn Notice,” “Veronica Mars,” “Buffy The Vampire Slayer,” “Smallville” and the NBC “Knight Rider” reboot, appeared in “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift” and produced the Maggie Gyllenhaal movie “The Kindergarten Teacher.”

Most recently, he has served as a producer on several drama films and documentaries, and has made several appearances over the last few years on morning show “Fox and Friends.”

He has four children with real estate agent Carly Matros, whom he married in 2007.
